  • Beginner question: What is binding?

    - by JDelage
Hi, I was trying to understand the difference between early and late binding, and in the process realized that the concept of binding is nebulous to me. I think I understand that it relates to the way data-as-a-word-of-memory is linked to type-as-a-set-of-language-features but I am not sure those are the right concepts. Also, how does understanding this deeply help people become better programmers? Please note: This question is not "what is late v. early binding" or "what are the trade-offs between the 2". Those already exist here. Thanks, JDelage

  • What is your favourite cleverly written functional code?

    - by sdcvvc
What are your favourite short, mind-blowing snippets in functional languages? My two favourite ones are (Haskell): powerset = filterM (const [True, False]) foldl f v xs = foldr (\x g a -> g (f a x)) id xs v -- from Hutton's tutorial (I tagged the question as Haskell, but examples in all languages - including non-FP ones - are welcome as long as they are in functional spirit.)

  • php functions new php developers should be aware of

    - by John
Can people suggest a list of common or popular php functions that new/junior programmers should be aware of so that they don't "re-invent-the-wheel" so to speak? For example, I've seen a lot of new coders try to write their own date parsing functions when a combination of date(), strtotime() and time() can do everything their looking for. Any other ones you guys want to add to this list? Thanks

  • Should you remove all warnings in your Verilog or VHDL design? Why or why not?

    - by Brian Carlton
In (regular) software I have worked at companies where the gcc option -Wall is used to show all warnings. Then they need to be dealt with. With non-trivial FPGA/ASIC design in Verilog or VHDL there are often many many warnings. Should I worry about all of them? Do you have any specific techniques to suggest? My flow is mainly for FPGAs (Altera and Xilinx in particular), but I assume the same rules would apply to ASIC design, possibly more so due to the inability to change the design after it is built.

  • Polymorphic Behavior in VB6

    - by Tom Tresansky
I recently noticed the CallByName keyword in VB6. Since this takes a object, procedure name, "call type" and arguments array, can this be used to "fake" some types of polymorphic behavior? I can make 2 classes, class A and B, each with the same method Foo, and do: Dim list As New Collection Dim instanceA As New ClassA Dim instanceB As New ClassB Dim current As Object Call list.Add(instanceA) Call list.Add(instanceB) For Each current in list Call CallByName(current, "methodName", vbMethod) Next Anyone done this before? Problems? Horrible idea or genius idea? Implications? Unintended consequences?

  • Question on Addressing Modes in PDP-11 Assembler

    - by lego69
I have small question about pdp-11(simulator), I have this command (it begins from the address 1000) add 2500, #2500 and this initial list: register/address - initial value pc 1000 sp 600 2500 3000 and I want to know how this small snippet exactly runs, in my booklet I found that: firstly it reads inforamtion from the address 1000, inside this address we have value 066727, after we read number from the address 1002, AND VALUE MUST BE 2500(because of add 2500, #2500), but in my booklet I have 1474 without any explanations why, I know that I have here relative addressing mode, but why 1474 inside the address 1002 and not 2500, thanks in advance for any help

  • vb.net array for slideshow button

    - by StealthRT
Hey all, i am in the middle of trying to figure out how to go about doing this... I have a form that i call like so: call frmSlideShow.showWhat(1,4,8,9,11,22) Each of the numbers represents a different image slide (slide1.png, slide4.png, etc..). The problem i am having is trying to create a "previous" and "next" button to flip through them all. Trying to figure out what number the user is on and going from there and seeing what numbers are still left from the list above that was sent, etc. If anyone has an idea how i would go about doing that then that would be awesome! :) David

  • How to detect internet connectivity using java program

    - by Sunil Kumar Sahoo
How to write a java program which will tell me whether I have internet access or not. I donot want to ping or create connection with some external url because if that server will be down then my program will not work. I want reliable way to detect which will tell me 100% guarantee that whether I have internet connection or not irrespective of my Operating System. I want the program for the computers who are directly connected to internet. I have tried with the below program URL url = new URL("http://www.xyz.com/"); URLConnection conn = url.openConnection(); conn.connect(); I want something more appropriate than this program Thanks Sunil Kumar Sahoo

  • Problem with connection to MS SQL Server database using SSMS

    - by Charles
I have a database on line with Godaddy (who uses SQL Server 2005). They provide basic management tools, but tell you that for more advanced tools you can connect directly using SSMS. I followed their instructions to ensure my online database will accept remote connections, and can apparently log in using SSMS with success (after giving my hostname and access data). However: When attempting to expand the "Databases" folder tree, I get the following error: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server& LinkId=20476 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. • How can we receive a volume attaching notification

    - by Benjamin
When a volume is attached to file system, on Windows, the Window explorer detects the volume and refreshes automatically. I wonder the technique. How do an program(include device driver) get the notification? -Of course, it doesn’t mean a polling. I want to get an event(or a message). I would like to get the notification when a network volume(like SMB) is attached. Thanks in advance.

  • Yet another Haskell vs. Scala question

    - by Travis Brown
I've been using Haskell for several months, and I love it—it's gradually become my tool of choice for everything from one-off file renaming scripts to larger XML processing programs. I'm definitely still a beginner, but I'm starting to feel comfortable with the language and the basics of the theory behind it. I'm a lowly graduate student in the humanities, so I'm not under a lot of institutional or administrative pressure to use specific tools for my work. It would be convenient for me in many ways, however, to switch to Scala (or Clojure). Most of the NLP and machine learning libraries that I work with on a daily basis (and that I've written in the past) are Java-based, and the primary project I'm working for uses a Java application server. I've been mostly disappointed by my initial interactions with Scala. Many aspects of the syntax (partial application, for example) still feel clunky to me compared to Haskell, and I miss libraries like Parsec and HXT and QuickCheck. I'm familiar with the advantages of the JVM platform, so practical questions like this one don't really help me. What I'm looking for is a motivational argument for moving to Scala. What does it do (that Haskell doesn't) that's really cool? What makes it fun or challenging or life-changing? Why should I get excited about writing it?

  • How can I generate the Rowland prime sequence idiomatically in J?

    - by Gregory Higley
    If you're not familiar with the Rowland prime sequence, you can find out about it here. I've created an ugly, procedural monadic verb in J to generate the first n terms in this sequence, as follows: rowland =: monad define result =. 0 $ 0 t =. 1 $ 7 while. (# result) < y do. a =. {: t n =. 1 + # t t =. t , a + n +. a d =. | -/ _2 {. t if. d > 1 do. result =. ~. result , d end. end. result ) This works perfectly, and it indeed generates the first n terms in the sequence. (By n terms, I mean the first n distinct primes.) Here is the output of rowland 20: 5 3 11 23 47 101 7 13 233 467 941 1889 3779 7559 15131 53 30323 60647 121403 242807 My question is, how can I write this in more idiomatic J? I don't have a clue, although I did write the following function to find the differences between each successive number in a list of numbers, which is one of the required steps. Here it is, although it too could probably be refactored by a more experienced J programmer than I: diffs =: monad : '}: (|@({.-2&{.) , $:@}.) ^: (1 < #) y'

  • Adding a new target type to msbuild: How do I refer to the itemname in the task rules?

    - by jmucchiello
I'm trying to add a task to build the COM proxy DLL after building the main DLL. So I created the following in a .target file: <Target Name="ProxyDLL" Inputs="$(IntDir)%(WHATGOESHERE)_i.c;$(IntDir)dlldata.c" Outputs="$(OutDir)%(WHATGOESHERE)ps.dll" AfterTargets="Link"> <CL Sources="$(IntDir)%(WHATGOESHERE)_i.c;$(IntDir)dlldata.c" /> </Target> And reference it from the .vcxproj file as <ItemGroup> <ProxyDLL Include="FTAccountant" /> </ItemGroup> So the FTAccountant.DLL file is created through the normal build process and then when attempts to compile the proxy stubs it creates these command lines: cl /c dir\_i.c dir\dlldata.c And of course it can't find _i.c. The first attempt, I put %(Filename) in the WHATGOESHERE space and I got this error: C:\ActivePay\Build\Proxy DLL.targets(6,3): error MSB4095: The item metadata %(Filename) is being referenced without an item name. Specify the item name by using %(itemname.Filename). So I changed it to %(itemname.Filename) and that is an empty string. How to get the value specified in the task's Include attribute and use it within the task?

  • Simple C# USING statement for folder

    - by salvationishere
I am developing a VS 2008 web application in C#. I am trying to include a namespace that is stored in one of my folders. So instead of: using ADONET_namespace it is stored in "Admins" folder. How do I modify this aspx.cs file to include Admins/ADONET_namespace? Currently I get following error from aspx.cs file: The type or namespace name 'ADONET_namespace' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

  • .Net assembly references being lost as soon as project is compiled

    - by Truegilly
I have a windows service project, one of many C# projects in a solution file. I add a reference to my "Data_objects" class library for my windows service. this is added to the references no problem. all the classes become available and I can begin to code. As soon a I compile the windows service it says "The type or namespace name 'Data_Objects' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)" yet in the solution explorer the reference is fine, no yellow exclamation mark. I have to remove and add it again for it to pick it up, but then as soon as I compile it loses it. This reference works fine in my two other web application projects. what the hell is going on !! Truegilly Update there are no naming conflicts the only bit of code I have is a using statement - eg using Data_Objects.DataContext; also this only happens with a windows service project, i just created a new web app project and it works fine.

  • What is the best algorithm for this array-comparison problem?

    - by mark
What is the most efficient for speed algorithm to solve the following problem? Given 6 arrays, D1,D2,D3,D4,D5 and D6 each containing 6 numbers like: D1[0] = number D2[0] = number ...... D6[0] = number D1[1] = another number D2[1] = another number .... ..... .... ...... .... D1[5] = yet another number .... ...... .... Given a second array ST1, containing 1 number: ST1[0] = 6 Given a third array ans, containing 6 numbers: ans[0] = 3, ans[1] = 4, ans[2] = 5, ......ans[5] = 8 Using as index for the arrays D1,D2,D3,D4,D5 and D6, the number that goes from 0, to the number stored in ST1[0] minus one, in this example 6, so from 0 to 6-1, compare each res array against each D array My algorithm so far is: I tried to keep everything unlooped as much as possible. • Advanced tasks using Web.Config transformation

    - by dcadenas
Does anyone know if there is a way to "transform" specific sections of values instead of replacing the whole value or an attribute? For example, I've got several appSettings entries that specify the Urls for different webservices. These entries are slightly different in the dev environment than the production environment. Some are less trivial than others <!-- DEV ENTRY --> <appSettings> <add key="serviceName1_WebsService_Url" value="http://wsServiceName1.dev.domain.com/v1.2.3.4/entryPoint.asmx" /> <add key="serviceName2_WebsService_Url" value="http://ma1-lab.lab1.domain.com/v1.2.3.4/entryPoint.asmx" /> </appSettings> <!-- PROD ENTRY --> <appSettings> <add key="serviceName1_WebsService_Url" value="http://wsServiceName1.prod.domain.com/v1.2.3.4/entryPoint.asmx" /> <add key="serviceName2_WebsService_Url" value="http://ws.ServiceName2.domain.com/v1.2.3.4/entryPoint.asmx" /> </appSettings> So far, I know I can do something like this in the Web.Release.Config: <add xdt:Locator="Match(key)" xdt:Transform="SetAttributes(value)" key="serviceName1_WebsService_Url" value="http://wsServiceName1.prod.domain.com/v1.2.3.4/entryPoint.asmx" /> <add xdt:Locator="Match(key)" xdt:Transform="SetAttributes(value)" key="serviceName2_WebsService_Url" value="http://ws.ServiceName2.domain.com/v1.2.3.4/entryPoint.asmx" /> However, everytime the Version for that webservice is updated, I would have to update the Web.Release.Config as well, which defeats the purpose of simplfying my web.config updates. I know I could also split that URL into different sections and update them independently, but I rather have it all in one key. I've looked through the available web.config Transforms but nothings seems to be geared towars what I am trying to accomplish. These are the websites I am using as a reference: Vishal Joshi's blog, MSDN Help, and Channel9 video Any help would be much appreciated! -D

  • posmax: like argmax but gives the position(s) of the element x for which f[x] is maximal

    - by dreeves
Mathematica has a built-in function ArgMax for functions over infinite domains, based on the standard mathematical definition. The analog for finite domains is a handy utility function. Given a function and a list (call it the domain of the function), return the element(s) of the list that maximize the function. Here's an example of finite argmax in action: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/471029/canonicalize-nfl-team-names/472213#472213 And here's my implementation of it (along with argmin for good measure): (* argmax[f, domain] returns the element of domain for which f of that element is maximal -- breaks ties in favor of first occurrence. *) SetAttributes[{argmax, argmin}, HoldFirst]; argmax[f_, dom_List] := Fold[If[f[#1]>=f[#2], #1, #2]&, First[dom], Rest[dom]] argmin[f_, dom_List] := argmax[-f[#]&, dom] First, is that the most efficient way to implement argmax? What if you want the list of all maximal elements instead of just the first one? Second, how about the related function posmax that, instead of returning the maximal element(s), returns the position(s) of the maximal elements?

  • Registry corrupted for testing?

    - by Emile
Hi. Forgive my ignorance. I'm a lowly LAMP stack developer and this is my first post for "c++". We had an Internet Explorer add-on commissioned but then lost support. Allegedly each version has to be have been tested "on a fresh computer since old add-ons could have cause registry errors." I'm not familiar with IE add-on development (or c++ dev). Is this common? Can't one simply reverse registry errors? How to continue testing iterations on one machine? Thanks!

  • How to iterate over modifed std::map values?

    - by Frank
I have an std::map, and I would like to define an iterator that returns modified values. Typically, a std::map<int,double>::iterator iterates over std::pair<int,double>, and I would like the same behavior, just the double value is multiplied by a constant. I tried it with boost::transform_iterator, but it doesn't compile: #include <map> #include <boost/iterator/transform_iterator.hpp> #include <boost/functional.hpp> typedef std::map<int,double> Map; Map m; m[100] = 2.24; typedef boost::binder2nd< std::multiplies<double> > Function; typedef boost::transform_iterator<Function, Map::value_type*> MultiplyIter; MultiplyIter begin = boost::make_transform_iterator(m.begin(), Function(std::multiplies<double>(), 4)); // now want to similarly create an end iterator // and then iterate over the modified map The error is: error: conversion from 'boost ::transform_iterator< boost::binder2nd<multiplies<double> >, gen_map<int, double>::iterator , boost::use_default, boost::use_default >' to non-scalar type 'boost::transform_iterator< boost::binder2nd<multiplies<double> >, pair<const int, double> * , boost::use_default, boost::use_default >' requested What is gen_map and do I really need it? I adapted the transform_iterator tutorial code from here to write this code ...

  • Best second language to learn for a native english speaking programmer?

    - by Tom Dignan
I have always wanted to learn a foreign language, but I would like to pick one that can also help me the most in my career. I'm in the US, so it is not necessary for me to learn a second language to influence my career success, however I think knowing one and speaking it fluently could potentially put me in a more interesting career than if I did not. I would like to be able to travel the world, especially if I could have a reason to go one place or another. Which leads me to my question: What is the best second language to learn for a native English speaking programmer? (Especially from the US) Some ideas that come to mind for me are Mandarin, German, Japanese, French... I am looking for experienced opinions though! Thanks.
