    When calculating the load factor of a hashtable with an open-addressing array implementation I am using: numberOfKeysInArray/sizeOfArray however it occurred to me that since deleted entries must be marked as such (to distinguish them from empty spaces), it might make sense to include these in the number of keys. My thinking is that as far as estimating the average number of probes to find an entry, deleted entries should count towards the load factor, but as far as inserting a new key they should not. Which is the proper calculation: including deleted keys or not?

    I've written a CMS which uses the PHP function json_encode to send some data back via an Ajax Request. Unfortunately, I'm trying to load it onto a server which is running PHP version 5.1, the json_encode PHP function is not available on versions of PHP before 5.2.0. Does anyone know of a way to encode a PH array as JSON without using the inbuilt json_encode function?

  • How to remove a node based on contents of a subnode and then convert to CSV with headers intact

    I'm downloading a 10MB zipped XML file with wget, unzipping it to 40MB, trying to weed out test and expired entries (if the text of a certain node is "This is a test opportunity. Please DO NOT apply!" or if is in the past), and then convert to CSV. However, I get this error: PHP Notice: Array to string conversion in /home/morris/projects/grantsgov/xml2csv.php on line 46 I get Array errors because some entries in the XML file have more than one occurrence of a node (different text contents). The test entries are still present.     I was just wondering which would be cheaper, using a try catch block for index out of bounds or checking the length of a multi dimensional array and comparing values? I have a feeling it's the length, since I can store the length in a variable and then just do if's which are relatively cheap. I'm just not sure how expensive try-catch is. Thanks!

  • Unique element ID, even if element doesn't have one

    I'm writing a GreaseMonkey script where I'm iterating through a bunch of elements. For each element, I need a string ID that I can use to reference that element later. The element itself doesn't have an id attribute, and I can't modify the original document to give it one (although I can make DOM changes in my script). I can't store the references in my script because when I need them, the GreaseMonkey script itself will have gone out of scope. Is there some way to get at an "internal" ID that the browser uses, for example? A Firefox-only solution is fine; a cross-browser solution that could be applied in other scenarios would be awesome. Edit: If the GreaseMonkey script is out of scope, how are you referencing the elements later? They GreaseMonkey script is adding events to DOM objects. I can't store the references in an array or some other similar mechanism because when the event fires, the array will be gone because the GreaseMonkey script will have gone out of scope. So the event needs some way to know about the element reference that the script had when the event was attached. And the element in question is not the one to which it is attached. Can't you just use a custom property on the element? Yes, but the problem is on the lookup. I'd have to resort to iterating through all the elements looking for the one that has that custom property set to the desired id. That would work, sure, but in large documents it could be very time consuming. I'm looking for something where the browser can do the lookup grunt work. Wait, can you or can you not modify the document? I can't modify the source document, but I can make DOM changes in the script. I'll clarify in the question. Can you not use closures? Closuses did turn out to work, although I initially thought they wouldn't. See my later post. It sounds like the answer to the question: "Is there some internal browser ID I could use?" is "No."

    Is it possible to create a PHP function that takes a variable number of parameters all of them by reference? It doesn't help me a function that receives by reference an array of values nor a function that takes its arguments wrapped in an object because I'm working on function composition and argument binding. Don't think about call-time pass-by-reference either. That thing shouldn't even exist.
