  Hi, I'm in a confusion. For our course (1 year ago) I used Stallings. I read it. It was fine. But I don't own any operating system's book. I want to buy a book on operating systems. • How can I efficiently group a large list of URLs by their host name in Perl?

  I have text file that contains over one million URLs. I have to process this file in order to assign URLs to groups, based on host address: { 'http://www.ex1.com' = ['http://www.ex1.com/...', 'http://www.ex1.com/...', ...], 'http://www.ex2.com' = ['http://www.ex2.com/...', 'http://www.ex2.com/...', ...] } My current basic solution takes about 600 MB of RAM to do this (size of file is about 300 MB). Could you provide some more efficient ways? My current solution simply reads line by line, extracts host address by regex and puts the url into a hash. • dynamic array pointer to binary file

  Hi guys, Know this might be rather basic, but I been trying to figure out how to one after create a dynamic array such as double* data = new double[size]; be used as a source of data to be kept in to a binary file such as ofstream fs("data.bin",ios:binary"); fs.write(reinterpret_cast<const char *> (data),size*sizeof(double)); When I finish writing, I attempt to read the file through double* data = new double[size]; ifstream fs("data.bin",ios:binary"); fs.read(reinterpret_cast<char*> (data),size*sizeof(double)); However I seem to encounter a run time error when reading the data. Do you guys have any advice how i should attempt to write a dynamic array using pointers passed from other methods to be stored in binary files?

• Is there a Java API for creating a XHTML document?

  I want to provide a simple XHTML representation of each of the resources in a REST web service. At the moment i'm using a StringBuilder to generate these which is both tedious and error prone. I don't see these changing after I publish the service but the process of coding each is a bit painful. Is there a XHTML document writer api? Should I just use an XML writer? Which one? Should I just roll my own basic HTML document class - doctype is the same each time, i just need to set the title, metatags and body content, most of which (but not all content) is already in HTML for the GETs. Or should I just use StringBuilder and stop whining? ;) Thanks.

• Subsetting a data frame in a function using another data frame as parameter

  I would like to submit a data frame to a function and use it to subset another data frame. This is the basic data frame: foo <- data.frame(var1= c('1', '1', '1', '2', '2', '3'), var2=c('A', 'A', 'B', 'B', 'C', 'C')) I use the following function to find out the frequencies of var2 for specified values of var1. foobar <- function(x, y, z){ a <- subset(x, (x$var1 == y)) b <- subset(a, (a$var2 == z)) n=nrow(b) return(n) } Examples: foobar(foo, 1, "A") # returns 2 foobar(foo, 1, "B") # returns 1 foobar(foo, 3, "C") # returns 1 This works. But now I want to submit a data frame of values to foobar. Instead of the above examples, I would like to submit df to foobar and get the same results as above (2, 1, 1) df <- data.frame(var1=c('1','1','3'), var2=c("A", "B", "C")) When I change foobar to accept two arguments like foobar(foo, df) and use y[, c(var1)] and y[, c(var2)] instead of the two parameters x and y it still doesn't work. Which way is there to do this?

• Memory management in Qt?

  I'm quite new to Qt and am wondering on some basic stuff with memory management and the life of objects. When do I need to delete / destroy my objects? Is any of this handled automatically? In the example below, which of the objects I create do I need to delete? What happens to the instance variable myOtherClass when myClass is destroyed? What happens if I don't delete / destroy my objects at all, will that be a problem to memory? in MyClass.h: class MyClass { public: MyClass(); ~MyClass(); MyOtherClass *myOtherClass; }; in MyClass.cpp: MyClass::MyClass() { myOtherClass = new MyOtherClass(); MyOtherClass myOtherClass2; QString myString = "Hello"; } As you can see this is quite newbie-easy stuff but where can I learn about this in an easy way? I want to store the basic and detailed information about registered users in a specially created database table (not in aspnet_users table). I want to validate email first and then prevent next registration step for the user whose email address already exists in the database. At the last registration step I want to present summary form. All previous input and select fields should be duplicated in this form with "disabled" attribute. Please tell me how to adjust CreateUserWizard ASP.NET Control and web.config file to these needs?

• Getting started with Express - Error: Cannot find module './routes'

  I am just getting started in the world of Node.JS, and I tried using the command line "express" command to install a basic application (with jade support) Now, I was playing around with it a bit to see how it works and I am coming across a strange error: In the /routes directory there is a file called index which contains exports.index = function(req, res){ res.render('index', { title: "Express" }); }; that, as you all know, renders the index page. Well, all I did was renaming that file from index.js to router.js, so that I can easily refer to it as I would like to have more than just an index page. The renaming doesn't work, I get the error Error: Cannot find module './routes' Which is weird, as I though that var express = require('express'), routes = require('./routes'); would require ALL the files in the directory. There must be something small there I'm missing, and please bare with me as I am pretty new to this. Thanks in advance.

• Where does form processing logic belong in a MVC web application?

  In a web-based application that uses the Model-View-Controller design pattern, the logic relating to processing form submissions seems to belong somewhere in between the Model layer and the Controller layer. This is especially true in the case of a complex form (i.e. where form processing goes well beyond simple CRUD operations). What's the best way to conceptualize this? Are forms simply a kind of glue between models and controllers? Or does form logic belong squarely in the M or C camp? EDIT: I understand the basic flow of information in an MVC application (see chills42's answer for a summary). My question is where the form processing logic belongs - in the controller, in the model, or somewhere else?

• Create WPF TextBox that accepts only numbers

  I would like to create a TextBox that only accepts numeric values, in a specific range. What is the best way to implement such TextBox? I thought about deriving TextBox and to override the validation and coercion of the TextProperty. However, I am not sure how to do this, and I understand that deriving WPF control is generally not recommended. Edit: What I needed was a very basic textbox that filters out all key presses which are not digits. The easiest way to achieve it is to handle the TextBox.PreviewTextInput event: private void textBox_PreviewTextInput(object sender, TextCompositionEventArgs e) { int result; if (!validateStringAsNumber(e.Text,out result,false)) { e.Handled = true; } } (validateStringAsNumber is my function that primarily use Int.TryParse) Some of the suggested solutions are probably better, but for the simple functionality I needed this solution is the easiest and quickest to implement while sufficient for my needs.

When inserting a row that should fail the test, the row is inserted anyway. The structure: CREATE TABLE user ( id INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, uname VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL, fname VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, lname VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, mail VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (id), CHECK (LENGTH(fname) > 3) ); The insert statement: INSERT INTO user VALUES (null, 'user', 'Fname', 'Lname', '[email protected]'); I'm pretty sure I'm missing something basic here.

  Hi, I am trying to get my head round some basic erlang functionality and I could do with some comments on the following. I have the following erlang code that takes a list of tuples and returns a list minus an element if a key is found: delete(Key, Database) -> remove(Database, Key, []). remove([], Key, Acc) -> Acc; remove([H|T], Key, Acc) -> if element(1, H) /= Key -> [H| remove(T, Key, Acc)]; true -> remove(T, Key, Acc) end. Is this a good way of doing this? The if statement seems incorrect. Also is my use of the accumulator Acc making this tail recursive? Cheers Paul

• Vbscript - Compare and copy files from folder if newer than destination files

  Hi, I'm trying to design this script that's supposed to be used as a part of a logon script for alot of users. And this script is basically supposed to take a source folder and destination folder as basically just make sure that the destination folder has the exact same content as the source folder. But only copy if the datemodified stamp of the source file is newer than the destination file. I have been thinking out this basic pseudo code, just trying to make sure this is valid and solid basically. I'm not quite sure how it can be done, but I could probably spend all day figuring it out. But the people here are generally so amazingly smart that with your help it would take alot less time :)

  I need some suggestions for how to implement a very basic mechanism that logs what multiple users are doing in an application. When another feature is running I then need to change the application, to restrict functionality. Use Case Example User can normaly edit unpaid records. If the application then runs a Payrun process (Long), I need to then change parts of the application to restrict functionality for a short period of time (eg. Make existing unpaid records readonly). Any suggestions on how I can do this in a .net application?

  I have a basic Silverlight 4 project called "MySLApp" which has the associated MySLApp.Web project. (names changed for simplicity) It compiles down into these files (in the silverlight project): AppManifest.xaml MySLApp.dll MySLApp.xap MySLAppTestPage.html And the Web project builds into: Bin\MySLApp.Web.dll ClientBin\MySLApp.xap What I also have in my Web project is a .ASHX file that serves up a generated image, which my Silverlight application calls out to as the URL of an image: var uri = new Uri(@"http://localhost:1122/ImageServer.ashx", UriKind.Absolute); var bi = new BitmapImage(uri); TagImage.Source = bi; My big question boils down to this: How do I deploy my app to my IIS server? • NSOutlineView with Drag and Drop

  I read the other post here on Outlineviews and DND, but I can't get my program to work. At the bottom of this post is a link to a zip of my project. Its very basic with only an outlineview and button. I want it to receive text files being dropped on it, but something is wrong with my code or connections. I tried following Apple's example code of their NSOutline Drag and Drop, but I'm missing something. 1 difference is my program is a document based program and their example isn't. I set the File's Owner to receive delegate actions, since that's where my code to handle drag and drop is, as well as a button action.   Hi all, hopefully this is a basic question about make pattern rules: I want to use a wildcard more than once in a prerequisite for a rule, i.e. in my Makefile I have data/%P1.m: $(PROJHOME)/data/%/ISCAN/%P1.RAW @echo " Writing temporary matlab file for $*" # do something data/%P2.m: $(PROJHOME)/data/%/ISCAN/AGP2.RAW @echo " Writing temporary matlab file for $*" # do something In this example, I try to invoke make when the wildcard % is AG. Both files $(PROJHOME)/data/AG/ISCAN/AGP1.RAW and $(PROJHOME)/data/AG/ISCAN/AGP2.RAW exist. I attempt the following make commands and get this output: [jshen@iLab10 gender-diffs]$ make data/AGP1.m make: *** No rule to make target `data/AGP1.m'. Stop. [jshen@iLab10 gender-diffs]$ make data/AGP2.m Writing temporary matlab file for AG, part 2...   I've been reading up on query plans and how to minimise duplicate plans being created by SQL Server for the same basic query. For example, if I understand correctly, sending both these query strings will result in 2 different query plans: "SELECT FirstName FROM Members WHERE LastName = 'Lee'" "SELECT FirstName FROM Members WHERE LastName = 'MacGhilleseatheanaich'" Using a stored procedure avoids this, as the query plan is the same, and "LastName" is passed as a variable, eg: CREATE PROCEDURE sp_myStoredProcedure @LastName varchar(100) AS SELECT FirstName FROM Members WHERE LastName = @LastName Go Now, my question is whether the same applies to the Command object (eg. SQLClient.SQLCommand in ADO.NET). The reason I ask is that string parameters don't have a defined max length, as in the code above. Take the following code: MyCmd.CommandText = "SELECT FirstName FROM Members WHERE LastName = @LastName" MyCmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@LastName", "Lee") Then later: MyCmd.Parameters.Clear() MyCmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@LastName", "MacGhilleseatheanaich") Since @LastName hasn't been declared to SQL Server as having a defined maximum length, will SQL Server create a new query plan for every different value when I execute the command this way?

• Recovering the deleted data from Android SD Card ?

  I am trying to make an Android application which would try to recover deleted content from the SD Card. How feasible it is ? I have following method in mind: 1) Since, the files are not actually deleted, can I access the file system to see files which has been marked to be overwritten. 2) Or will I have do header/footer file carving ? Is it possible from the application layer of android ? I am concerned about files stored on contiguous sectors and not the fragmented once. I want to do a basic file retrieval. • XSLT: Is there a way to "inherit" canned functionality?

  i am once again having to cobble together a bit of XSLT into order to turn generated XML into (rather than simply generating HTML). i'm having huge deja-vu this time again. i'm once again having to solve again basic problems, e.g.: how to convert characters into valid html entity references how to preserve whitespace/carriage returns when converting to html how to convert to HTML as opposed to xhtml how to convert dates from xml format into presentable format how to tear apart strings with substring This is all stuff that i've solved many times before. But every time i come back to XSLT i have to start from scratch, re-inventing the wheel every time. If it were a programming language i would have a library of canned functions and procedures i can call. i would have subroutines to perform the commonly repeated tasks. i would inherit from a base class that already implements the ugly boilerplate stuff. Is there any way in XSLT to grow, expand and improve the ecosystem with canned code?

  I'm very curious about old programming languages, especially COBOL, and as Wikipedia couldn't really tell me much about this topic, I decided to ask it here: Was COBOL the first programming language really being used in financial, stock and banking systems? Where exactly was COBOL used? Was it used more frequently than Fortran or BASIC, for example? I don't know if you lived at that time, but how did people react to the rising COBOL? Did they expect it to be the future? When has COBOL actually stopped being used to create new, big systems? Are you sure that there are still important legacy apps written in COBOL out there? I can't believe that somehow.

• How to sort in-place using the merge sort algorithm?

  I know the question is too open. All I want is someone to tell me how to convert a normal merge sort into an in-place merge sort (or a merge sort with constant extra space overhead). All I can find (on the net) is pages saying "it is too complex" or "out of scope of this text". "The only known ways to merge in-place (without any extra space) are too complex to be reduced to practical program." (from here) Even if it is too complex, can somebody outline the basic concept of how to make the merge sort in-place?
