• Website downloader library

  I need to put a little project together for myself, and I need some functionality to download a page for offline viewing. Is there a library that will download a given page and its embedded images, and edit the img tags to reflect the local locations of the images. I know there are a lot of website downloaders out there, but I cant find something that i can use directly in my code. I have some basic scripts done in python, so Python is very welcome. but pretty much any language will do.

• Any way to get read timeouts with Java NIO/selectors?

  I'm converting a Java server application which used blocking IO and thread-per-client to NIO and a single IO thread (probably a thread pool after I get the basic implementation done). The one thing I am having an issue with is disconnecting clients after they have been idle for a period. I had previously been using SO_TIMEOUT and blocking reads. However, with selector-based IO, reads don't block... I was hoping that I'd be able to set a timeout and be able to select on read timeout, with something like SelectionKey.isReadTimeout(), but nothing like that seems to exist. The current best solution I have come up with is to have a Timer with a TimerTask which keeps track of the keys which are waiting on read, and then canceling them and re-scheduling them on each read. Is there a better solution?

  In my experience, .net is 2 to 3 times slower than native code. (I implemented L-BFGS for multivariate optimization). I have traced the ads on stackoverflow to http://www.centerspace.net/products/ the speed is really amazing, the speed is close to native code. How can they do that? They said that: Q. Is NMath "pure" .NET? A. The answer depends somewhat on your definition of "pure .NET". NMath is written in C#, plus a small Managed C++ layer. For better performance of basic linear algebra operations, however, NMath does rely on the native Intel Math Kernel Library (included with NMath). But there are no COM components, no DLLs--just .NET assemblies. Also, all memory allocated in the Managed C++ layer and used by native code is allocated from the managed heap. Can someone explain more to me? Thanks!

  How can I implement grep of Unix in Perl? I tried to use Perl's built-in grep. Here is the code which is not working: $pattern = @ARGV[0]; $file= @ARGV[1]; open($fp,$file); @arr = <$fp>; @lines = grep $pattern, @arr; close($fp); print @lines; And by the way, i am trying only basic grep functionality not full featured and secondly i don't want to do string parsing myself. • What is the best way to manage one's session variables?

  In my .NET web app, I keep basic user info in a user session object. I also usually keep a director class in the session; which is basically just has info about whatever thing it being worked on on that screen (like a customer id). I am trying to keep from adding a ton of sessions. I also want to make sure at any given time ONLY the sessions that are necessary are in memory. This means I need an effective way of managing my session variables. Any suggestions?

• Is it feasible to write a Firefox plugin to make use of ActiveX control on Windows?

  I use an ActiveX control called TAPIEx enabling TAPI phone system integration using MS Access 2000 (+Visual Basic). I want to turn this Access database into a web app with the clients running Firefox (all on internal network). Since Firefox doesnt support ActiveX is it feasible for me to write a Firefox plugin that in turn utilizes the ActiveX control? With regard to how plugins work - Would I be able to call 'functions' of the plugin from page script (eg dial call specifying phone number, check if calls in process)? Would adding these functions to the Firefox right click menu 'globally' inside Firefox be easier? Hope you guys can help. Note I'm not a fulltime programmer; I just need to know how steep the learning curve will be or even if my idea is possible! • Conditionals in Antlr String Templates

  We are using Antlr StringTemplates to give control over how a Entity's Name is output. The basic Stringtemplate is $FirstName$ $Initial$ $LastName$, $Suffix$, $Degree$ I want to add some smarts to that template so that the commas are only output when necessary i.e. The first comma is only output when there is a Suffix or Degree and the second commas is only output if there is a suffix. I tried the following template string bit it does not work.   I am working on a basic shell interpreter to familiarize myself with Rust. • Is there a way to pause a CABasicAnimation?

  I have a basic spinning animation of the iPhone. Is there any way that I can "pause" the animation so that the position of the view will be maintained? I guess one way of doing this would be to cause the animation to "complete" instead of calling "remove" on it, how would I do that? • How many cron jobs are too many?

  I have a couple of cron jobs for basic maintenance which aren't very resource-intensive. I also have custom task scheduling (which is just calling a .php file and passing information via GET, ie: cronjob.php?param1=param ...). These can add up pretty quickly. These just call system commands and run external programs (Nmap is one of them). They usually don't take long either. Anyway, can anyone tell me, roughly what point is too many? I know it's hard to say since it depends on what job is being run and how often, but at what point does the crontab program start "struggling"? Anyone have any idea? Thanks.

  Hello, I am aware that there is a native implementation of loop device system on osx, the hdiutil/hdix driver. But due to a number of reasons i need to roll out my own custom loop driver. Since hdix is closed-source can anyone give some starting pointers, links, advises, etc. on the subject? I had expirience implementing loop drivers on linux and windows but i don't really have a clue where to start from on osx. The basic functionality i need to implement is the same: given any file on disk, simulate a virtual block device interface for it. I also would like my loop driver to use all the native partition filter stacking available for real and hdix virtual block devices on osx.

• OOP Design Question - Where/When do you Validate properties?

  I have read a few books on OOP DDD/PoEAA/Gang of Four and none of them seem to cover the topic of validation - it seems to be always assumed that data is valid. I gather from the answers to this post (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1651964/oop-design-question-validating-properties) that a client should only attempt to set a valid property value on a domain object. Do you have a 'validator method' alongside every getter and setter? isValidName() setName() getName() I seem to be missing some key basic knowledge about OOP data validation - can you point me to a book that covers this topic in detail? - ie. covering different types of validation / invariants/ handling feedback / to use Exceptions or not etc

• TFS Build Configuration Vs Test Manager

  Hi, I have been tasked with setting up TFS 2010 for my company. After setting up TFS and configuring the basics (New collection, project, adding solution to souce control), i thought i would try out some unit testing with it. I configured the Build Controller and Agent for my solution and added in some basic unit tests. These ran ok and did exactly what i would expect (i broke the build then ran the Build Definition, and it showed me where the errors were). My question is, what advantages (apart from the "Black box call stack logger") does Test Manager have over the TFS builds? Is it worth the extra effort of setting that up and configuring it? Only knowing the basics of what Test Manager is, that may be a very naive question to ask, and i appoligise if it is. Thanks

• Text editing best practices (with tags, etc.)

  Hi there, I want to create a text field with some text, that is styled with tags. Think of MS Word, some ext is bold, some is a headline, etc. The tags that style the text are not visible to the user, he just sees the text in bold. How do I preserve these tags? I mean when I backspace over the closing bold-tag, for example, how do I preserve that and prevent that the rest of the text is now bold until the end? I guess this is a pretty basic question for experiences programmers. Are there any algorithms or best practices? This problem surely has been solved before, any pointers? (If this is of any concern, I develop for the iPhone OS and the text field will be a UITextView, but my question is more general I guess.) Thanks in advance!

  Hello all: I'm an iPhone developer, but new to web development. I've done some basic HTML websites and made one in iWeb as well. I'm trying to branch out to actual mobile development now, so I checked out Dashcode. Anyway, I'm trying to put a Call Button, Mail Button, and Map Button in horizontal alignment.   I'm new to Ruby, and have been working my way through Mr Neighborly's Humble Little Ruby Guide. There have been a few typos in the code examples along the way, but I've always managed to work out what's wrong and subsequently fix it - until now! This is really basic, but I can't get the following example to work on Mac OS X (Snow Leopard): gone = "Got gone fool!" puts "Original: " + gone gone.delete!("o", "r-v") puts "deleted: " + gone Output I'm expecting is: Original: Got gone fool! deleted: G gne fl! Output I actually get is: Original: Got gone fool! deleted: Got gone fool! The delete! method doesn't seem to have had any effect. Can anyone shed any light on what's going wrong here? :-\

• How to find all Classes implemeting IDisposable?

  I am working on a large project, and one of my tasks is to remove possible memory leaks. In my code, I have noticed several IDisposable items not being disposed of, and have fixed that. However, that leads me to a more basic question, how do I find all classes used in my project that implement IDisposable? (Not custom created classes by normal Library classes). I have already found one less-than-obvious class that implements IDisposable ( DataTable implements MarshalByValueComponent, which inherits IDisposable). Right now, I am manually checking any suspected classes by using MSDN, but isn't there some way through which I can automate this process?

  Hey all, I know that this error has been discussed elsewhere on the web, and this may seem like a stupid question, but I've got a very strange situation on my hands here. I'm running on Snow Leopard, with fully updated ruby and rails gems. I created a new rails project (ruby new testing), then navigated into that folder (cd ~/testing), and tried to create a basic scaffolding (ruby script/generate scaffold newtest name:string), and I got this error back: "ruby: No such file or directory -- script/generate (LoadError)" I have searched google thoroughly and tried to implement every solution that I could, but nothing has been working. I don't understand why I have this error or how to fix it. Can anyone help me, please?

  Basic problem statement: I have a very good reason for doing some pointer fanciness in an app where I need to pass a decimal by reference. So I have a class which stores many a decimal, so let's say is has a property as such: @property (nonatomic) double myDecimalValue; I want to pass it by reference to some other class. [someOtherObject sendMyDecimalByReference:&myDecimalValue]; But, a problem emerges! The way that actually has to be written (because it's a property) is [someOtherObject sendMyDecimalByReference:&decimalOrigin.myDecimalValue]; This fails to compile in objective-c I get around it by writing the following - (double *) myDecimalValueRef; [someOtherObject sendMyDecimalByReference:[decimalOrigin myDecimalValue]]; Except I have dozens of these decimals and I don't want to write that stupid wrapper function for every value. Is there a shorthand way to do this in Objective-C using just the Getter functions? Let's just assume I have a great reason for not using NSNumber. Thanks!

• HTML Form Upload PDF with other form contents using PHP

  I have a HTML form with fields such as name, address, notes, etc. I also have a field to upload a PDF. The uploaded PDF get's stored on the file system. How can I accomplish this if possibly the PDF files are larger than 2 MBs? Also, for some reason, the uploading of the PDF (< 2 MBs) works fine in Chrome, but not in IE. In IE, the upload doesn't even begin, but in Chrome, it completes fine.
