• Tutorials for an experienced C# user to learn C++

  Are there any good resources for learning C++ that a C# user could use, which don't require knowledge of C? I have quite a good knowledge of C# via courses in my University's game development program (in a 300 level course right now) but now I need to use C++ for a project. I would use a beginner tutorial but they are so hard for me to follow and learn the basic syntax because they start so slowly. I found a few of tutorials for switching from C++ to C#, but none in the other direction. I do have a little bit of Objective C practice from iPhone programming as well.

• How do I secure password parameters in RESTful web service URIs?

  i'm a newbie to server-side programming, so please forgive me if this gets messy. i've been contracted to create a web service to allow authenticated users to access a database. users have to enter a login and password. been reading and reading about REST vs SOAP, and i thought i'd settled on a RESTful design when i came across this statement: "Data that needs to be secure should not be sent as parameters in URIs." this seems like a major demerit against a RESTful approach. i'm aware that with https the password would be encrypted to prevent man-in-the-middle interception, but that leaves the server logs and client history as possible exposure points. is there a RESTful solution out there for this problem, or do i need to go SOAPy? any advice appreciated.

• Do most web 'programmers' (not designers) use WYSIWYG editors or hand code their HTML?

  When I started programming web pages, it became immediately obvious that the WYSIWYG editors sucked. The HTML output was difficult to maintain, did things in ways you may not have agreed with, completely messed up existing pages if opened, couldn't handle code in the page, and was polluted with dead or irrelevant code like <font ...></font>. At that time, I didn't know a single programmer with more than 6 months experience who didn't hand code their HTML. Even now, most of the developers I know hand code their HTML. But, I also realize this was a decade ago, WYSIWYG editors have improved, and I may be seriously underproductive hand coding my HTML. Do you, as a web programmer, use WYSIWYG editors for your HTML? PS-I'm kind of thinking we can just vote either YES or NO, and put comments below.

  I have compared gcc assembler output of do{ //some code }while(0); with do{ //some code break; }while(1); The output is equal, with or without optimization but.. It's always that way? No experiment can prove theories, they can only show they are wrong And because (I hope) programming is not an experimental science, and results can be predicted (at least simple things) I want to be sure next time I reeplace a break;}while(1); for the clearer (and less risky) while(0); Thank you for reading

Any recommendations for getting bootstrapped? To clarify -- I don't need an "into to programming" book. E.g., what's a variable, flow control, etc. I understand the concepts of OO having implemented them, etc. I'm looking for the best way to get to the specifics of C++.

• dll runtime error(C/C++/GCC/MSVC)

  After two days fighting, I make the dll(compiled in GCC/G++) link correctly in MSVC, but while debuging, I got the runtime error, is say that: Runtime Error! Program: my_exe.exe This application has required the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. I have test something in that way: compiled a dll in mingw/gcc, link and debug in MSVC, it works correctly ,but while I implement it in my large project, I got the runtime error. And I tested the dll in mingw/GCC, it works correctly, it says that the runtime error does not come from programming error,it comes from the dll imcompatible between different platform. Does anyone can hele me? Thanks, forgive my poor English.

• [MAC] Using a proxy for NSURLConnection

  Is there any way to get the content of a webfile (namely a .html Document) using a proxy, which is not defined in the system settings? I know that NSURLConnection is the right way to download a web file into a variable and not into a file (for which we should use NSURLDownload), but I don't find an way to use a proxy for it. Are there some inofficial APIs, Librarys or Classes or such I could use for what I want to do? I'm not that pro in Mac Programming, so im searching for something more or less simple to do for me plz. • Open two new tabs using Javascript

  I have this situation: There are a login page with a login form (form action is $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']). When user login, it will check what application the user can access and open all the application that available for that user in new tab. If user can access application (for example) 'Docs' and 'Sites', it will open 2 tabs. I Open new tab using window.open('app1.html','_newhtml');, some people say that it only works in Firefox. It's OK, no big deal for me. The problem is, It only open 1 tab, although I write it 2 times window.open('app1.html','_newhtml'); window.open('app2.html','_newhtml'); How can I open 2 tabs? are there any hacks from server side or client side programming?

Seeing I'm not too bad at what I do I've never really worried about where my next job's going to come from, but the more I look around me the younger software developers seem to get. Although I feel I'm now at the top of my programming game, I have some management experience and I'm now wondering if I should make a fully-fledged leap from development to ensure future career security. I know ageism has traditionally be linked with the IT industry, but given modern employment law makes discrimination illegal, is ageism still a real problem for software developers? • Is there a program devleopment environment similar to visual studios?

  I'm getting really tired of working against click-once and I'm wondering if there's a better alternative. I'm looking for a programming environment that preferably does not depend on the .net framework. I'm not sure how much .net does for me exactly (though I have some idea) but I'd like to make my programs as independent of downloading a microsoft or other framework. I often think of professional programs like itunes, gimp or firefox that don't require someone to have a .net framwork. I'd also like to have these programs work on windows mac and linux. Any suggestions?

• How does compiling circular dependencies work?

  I've made the example in Java but I think (not tested) that it works in other (all?) languages. You have 2 files. First, M.java: public class MType { XType x; MType() {x = null;} } Second, another file (in the same directory), XType.java: public class XType { MType m; public XType(MType m) {this.m = m;} } Ok it's bad programming, but if you run javac XType it compiles: compiles even MType because XType needs it. But ... MType needs XType ... how does that work? How does the compiler know what is happening? Probably this is a stupid question, but I would like to know how the compiler (javac or any other compilers you know) manages that situation, not how to avoid it. I'm asking because i'm writing a precompiler and I would like to manage that situation.

• Which is the future of web development: HTML5 or Silverlight(or other RIA framework)?

  My colleagues have a heated debate on what is the future of web development. One side is supporting HTML5 and the other is supporting Silverlight. There is no conclusion of the debate yet. In my humble opinion as a programmer, HTML5 will not improve programming productivity, while Silverlight will. In my understanding, programmers still need to program in JavaScript to take advantage of HTML5. For Silverlight, we can use C# which is static-type language. A lot of coding defects can be found in compilation time. For HTML5, different browsers might still have different behavior even though there is spec. For Silverlight, generally what works in IE will work the same way in other browsers. Just my thoughts. Any idea on how to choose future direction of web development?

  Prety long question; How can I do the following in C#: Open a webpage (Prefferably not visible) Check whether the page redirects to a different page (Site is down, 404, etc.) Check if the title is not equal to a said string Then seperately, (They need to click a confirm button) open their browser, and go to the adress of the first (It'll be the only one) hyperlink on the site. I literally have been looking on google for ages and haven't found anything similar to what I need.   Hi! I am a beginner in the process of designing and coding a project, I already have all the ideas on my head, but I have a problem impeding me of continuing this project. I feel the code is ugly and unreadable and I cannot continue it this way. The project is a programming language I have on my mind, and it has small graphics capabilities. Even being beginner, I want to code it using DirectX because everybody wants it. And I want to code it entirely, not depend on any wrapper libraries like SDL. I did a refactoring of the DirectX module and it exposed all the weaks. There is Direct3D code everywhere, but the code itself does very little! I would start building a project like this using DirectX or I should use just GDI and the Multimedia API of Windows? This is a good progress for a beginner?

• Design patter for extending Android's activities?

  While programming on Android, I end up writing a parent activity which is extended by several others. A bit like ListActivity. My parent activity extends Activity. if I intend to use a Map or a List, I can't use my parent activity as superclass - the child activity can only extend one activity obviously. As such I end up writing my parent activities with the same logic for Activity, ListActivity, MapActivity and so forth. What am I looking for is some sort of trait functionality/design pattern which would help in this case. Any suggestions?

• Library for Dataflow in C

  How can I do dataflow (pipes and filters, stream processing, flow based) in C? And not with UNIX pipes. I recently came across stream.py. Streams are iterables with a pipelining mechanism to enable data-flow programming and easy parallelization. The idea is to take the output of a function that turns an iterable into another iterable and plug that as the input of another such function. While you can already do this using function composition, this package provides an elegant notation for it by overloading the operator. I would like to duplicate a simple version of this kind of functionality in C. I particularly like the overloading of the operator to avoid function composition mess. Wikipedia points to this hint from a Usenet post in 1990. Why C? Because I would like to be able to do this on microcontrollers and in C extensions for other high level languages (Max, Pd*, Python). * (ironic given that Max and Pd were written, in C, specifically for this purpose – I'm looking for something barebones)

  Hey guys, I am new to android programming and i am trying to make an app that will interface with a website i have. It is a movie website with all of its information stored in SQL database. I know how to write the requests and queries in .asp but dont know how to get information from the database in my app. I want the user to be able to enter a movie title, and through a couple of stored procedures that are in my SQL database, return the info on that movie(actor, budget, genre....). I would like to have little info stored on the device, have all of the queries being sent to my SQL server and just have the info being returned. • Ignoring (serious) errors to keep the program alive?

  One of the main things I wanted to achieve in my experimental programming language was: When errors occur (Syntax, Name, Type, etc.) keep the program running, no matter how serious or devastating it is. I know that this is probably very bad, but I just wanted something that doesn't kill itself on every error - I find it interesting what happens when a serious error occurs but the program continues. Does this "paradigm" have a name? I mean expect for How bad is it to do the above? Are there programs in use out there that just follow: "Hey, this is a fatal, unexpected error - but you know what? I don't care!"?

• How to assign the value of document.cookie to your browser cookies?

  I'm a developer (and therefore a tester) of a website. Our site accepts any JavaScript or HTML from an user but I haven't been successful in explaining the danger of it, as obvious as it is. So I would like to prove it by logging in as my boss to prove to him that there is definitely a real danger here. I think this will put down any of his arguments and let us move onto filtering content like this. (note this question is not about filtering, or other suggestions on JavaScript tricks) I already know how to steal the value of the document.cookie variable with AJAX and a PHP file, but once you have that string of name=value;name=value;..., how do you apply it to your own browser? This is programming related because I am asking about tools which will help me debug my web program.
