• How can I assign actions to all my mouse buttons?

  I have a mouse with lots of buttons, but it's not a mainstream make like Logitech. For Windows, I have a driver that lets me assign actions like close-window (Ctrl+W) or next-tab (Ctrl+Tab), but I don't have a Linux driver. Since Linux is so flexible, I thought perhaps there is a general way to do this, regardless of brand? Update: Based on input from Cyrex, I installed and ran sudo apt-get install btnx which found several but not all mouse buttons. Found: left, right, wheel, wheelclick, thumb fwd, thumb back. Not found: wheel left, wheel right, thumb middle button. Vendor ID is 0x04d9, Model ID is 0xa015.

• Dynamic MMap ran out of room when trying to sudo apt-get anything

  I was having an error in Update Manager that asks me to do a partial upgrade and it fails. Now I can't sudo apt-get install anything. I tried to fix it, and now I can't sudo apt-get anything. Every time, I get this output: Reading package lists... Error! E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room. Please increase the size of APT::Cache-Limit. Current value: 25165824. (man 5 apt.conf) E: Error occurred while processing libuptimed0 (NewVersion1) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid_universe_binary-i386_Packages W: Unable to munmap E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. I have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it, and I fear that if I try something that probably doesn't work that it will make my problem worse. (Just for reference I am currently running 10.04 (Lucid) on my machine.)

  I'm using hidden forms, to collects some statistics. Will it have any penalty from search engines ? Update 1: I'm collecting some statistics, based on user interaction with my website. For example, POST requests will be sent to server, when: user stops a playing video user has watched a video till it's end etc. Using form_remote_for in Rails, i'm just rendering the form and keep it invisible. The reason on doing that - is to utilize authencity tokens, and just have less to code. Via JavaScript i'm only filling some hidden fields up and initiating form submission.

• Do web crawlers/spiders index azure web sites?

  For somebody who wants their web site to be as discoverable as possible (and who doesn't?), are Microsoft's Azure web sites (azurewebsites.net) a feasible domain to host sites? I have a site that is both on an azurewebsites.net and hosted under a completely different name by discountasp.net Both of these sites are exactly the same, except for the URL; whenever I update the code, I republish the site to/in both places. So obviosuly, they both have the same H1 and H2 elements. Searching for the value/content in my H1 tag, I find my .com site listed #3 on google and #2 on both Bing and Yahoo; OTOH, my azurewebsites.net site doesn't show up on the first page at all, in any of them. This makes me wonder if azurewebsites.net should only be used for Web API hosting and such-like, not for generic/commercial "public" sites. Are my conclusions valid?

• Periodic clicking sound from PC speaker

  After an update some months ago, my laptop has begun making a low, repeated clicking sound every few seconds. It is not being generated through the regular sound system, as altering the volume and even muting the sound does not make any difference. My regular audio works fine, by the way, so I am guessing this is some sort of PC speaker, since I cannot hear the click when I listen through regular headphones. Strangely, when I open the sound settings dialog the click magically disappears. I don't need to change any settings; if I simply leave the dialog open in the background then the problem disappears. Any ideas what this could be? • Google's process for publishing/modifying pages [closed]

  I'm assuming that a group of people at Google have control of certain sections of google.com, but how does Google make sure that employees don't accidentally or intentionally sabotage the website? Does Google use Adobe Contribute or some similar product for sharing/publishing the website. Do employees use WebDAV, FTP, SFTP, or SSH to publish the site. Since Google has hundreds of thousands of servers it probably takes some time for its servers to update. Do they transmit the new copy of the website to all servers before publishing at once? This question does not apply to Google editing a database and having a page reflect the database's changes. It applies to employees editing the source code and/ or back end of the site.

• Synchronizing local and remote cache in distributed caching

  With a distributed cache, a subset of the cache is kept locally while the rest is held remotely. In a get operation, if the entry is not available locally, the remote cache will be used and and the entry is added to local cache. In a put operation, both the local cache and remote cache are updated. Other nodes in the cluster also need to be notified to invalidate their local cache as well. What's a simplest way to achieve this if you implemented it yourself, assuming that nodes are not aware of each other. Edit My current implementation goes like this: Each cache entry contains a time stamp. Put operation will update local cache and remote cache Get operation will try local cache then remote cache A background thread on each node will check remote cache periodically for each entry in local cache. If the timestamp on remote is newer overwrite the local. If entry is not found in remote, delete it from local.

• Keeping up with upstream changes while adding small fixes or even major changes

  Often I need to apply some small fixes (to make them run on my environment) or even change some parts of the software (to tailor it to my needs) to software from outside. However this obviously creates problem with updating said software, even when it changes nothing related to my fix. It would be easier when the software provided integration for some kind of plugins but more often than not it doesn't. What would be an ideal workflow regarding that? Most of the projects are git repos I pulled from outside. How should I apply my changes so that I can update painlessly? You can assume that external changes are much more often and larger than my own ones, so reviewing each one of them won't be a solution.

• Drawing an animation over an already drawn screen

  I am working on a XNA WP7 card game whose basic prototype is complete. In game screen, 6 cards are displayed at a time (3 for each of the two players say 1,2 and 3). If player A attacks one of player B's card then I want to show an animation over player B's card i.e the victim card(say a claw scratch for e.g.) My question is how do I approach with the animation system so that I can draw an animation over a card upon certain events e.g. dead, fire, claw attack etc. I have an attack function which detects which type of card is attacking which type of card. Depending on the type of attacker card I want to display the animation on the victim card. Can I call animation classes function for different animations in the attack function itself without actually having to call separate draw and update functions. If so, how? Also how do I play sound at the same time when the animation is going on?

• apt-get not working

  Everything I try with apt-get fails. I am installing Ubuntu server for the first time. It is version 12.04 LTS. When I run: apt-get update I get failed to fetch http://gb.whatever goes here...... If I run apt-get install install build-essential I get "unable to locate package build-essential" I have looked at the sources.list but do not know what should and shouldn't be in there. • HP 510 laptop doesn't suspend when I close the lid

  I have an HP 510 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. I have all the correct settings for suspending when the lid is closed, as far as I can tell, so I think it's a problem with detecting the event. The way it "should" be detected, from what I can see, is a little hardware switch that is pushed when the lid closes. This switch manually puts off the backlight, and sends the suspend signal. All I can think is that the signal isn't being properly interpreted. Can anyone suggest a fix? Update: I tested whether the button was actually working based on the suggestion by josinalvo, and I found that in the directory /proc/acpi/button/lid/ there is no LID directory. There is, however, a C1CF folder, and in it is a state file. When using the this file instead of ID, I discovered that, no, when I close the lid, the state does not change.

• How do Tortoise svn handle concurrent file updation

  I don't know much about Tortoise SVN, but have been using it for a while :) I understand that it is capable of managing concurrent users on same file, but how does it do that? I am working on a file that another user is using concurrently and he committed couple of times before me, Now my files doesnt have the changes he made. Every time i end up in such a situation I gets a conflict and I am stuck. So is there something else I should do instead of just committing and causing conflict. Is it safe to do a update first and then commit ? Will I lose my local changes in this case? Please dont beat me up if this is somthing basic, A link to some tutorial will be useful in that case :)

Some posts on the web do claim it, but without providing any evidence.   Once in a while I need to install a new Ubuntu (I used it both for desktop and servers) and I always forget a couple of libraries I should have installed before compiling, meaning I have to recompile, and it's getting annoying. So now I want to make a complete list of all library packages to install before compiling Python (and preferably how optional they are). Off the top of my head I can remember these: build-essential (obviously) libz-dev (also pretty common and essential) libreadline-dev (or the Python prompt is crap) But I know there are many more.   Sometimes I find myself in situations when the part of code that I am writing is (or seems to be) so self-evident that its name would be basically repeated as a comment: class Example { /// <summary> /// The location of the update. /// </summary> public Uri UpdateLocation { get; set; }; } (C# example, but please refer to the question as language-agnostic). A comment like that is useless; what am I doing wrong? Is it the choice of the name that is wrong? How could I comment parts like this better? Should I just skip the comment for things like this?

  Compiling is easy but when using java to run the programs, it gives Exception found. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 without internet connections. Also, installed Oracle JDK7 and JRE7. Also did the update-alternatives command on java, javac and javaws. Changed the machine java in /etc/profiles. PATH is pointing to oracle java folder. I did many searches on Google about this topic but each time jdk and jre version are different. Also check version of jdk and jre using java -version and javac - version. Both of them are the same. The system also contains OpenJdk6 and OpenJdk7. So, how do I remove these errors?

• Does dist-upgrade require PPA software to be uninstalled first?

  Hi all, I'm still running Ubuntu 10.04 with quite a few PPAs. Amongst the PPAs there is Guiodic (Guido Iodice) Lucid quasi-rolling :) PPA which brings most recent versions of many programs to my desktop. My steps: sudo update-manager -d click on upgrade on the appearing window wait for the magic to happen: prepare to upgrade and setting new software channels during 'calculating the changes' I will get the following error message in the panel An error occurred, please run Package Manager form the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: ' Error: Marking the upgrade (E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolver generated breaks, this may be caused by help packages.)'This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies When I check Synaptic/apt-get I can't find any errors or hint toward broken packages Could this error be because of many PPA versions being newer than 10.04 original versions?

• C# inherit from a class in a different DLL

  I need to make an application that needs to be highly modular and that can easily be expanded with new functionality. I've thought up a design where I have a main window and a list of actions that are implemented using a strategy pattern. I'd like to implement the base classes/interfaces in a DLL and have the option of loading actions from DLL's which are loaded dynamically when the application starts. This way the main window can initiate actions without having to recompile or redistribute a new version. I just have to (re)distribute new DLL's which I can update dynamically at runtime. This should enable very easy modular updating from a central online source. The 'action' DLL's all inherit their structure from the code defined in the the DLL which defines the main strategy pattern structure and it's abstract factory. I'd like to know if C# /.Net will allow such a construction. I'd also like to know whether this construction has any major problems in terms of design.

• Why use string.Empty over "" when assigning to a string object

  I've been running StyleCop over my code and one of the recommendations SA1122 is to use string.Empty rather than "" when assigning an empty string to a value. My question is why is this considered best practice. Or, is this considered best practice? I assume there is no compiler difference between the two statements so I can only think that it's a readability thing? • Is it possible to allow the user to access the 'Volumes' without asking the Administrator's password?

  Am the administrator of my Ubuntu system. Recently I added a new user account. But when ever the user tries to access or open the 'Volumes'(Drives where movies, songs and other files are stored) it asks for the Administrator's password. I created the user account to my other family members and I don't want to tell them my password. So is it possible to allow them to access the Volumes without asking Administrator's password ?   Had this problem earlier: Crash after update to 11.10, from 11.04; ran the solution and had everything updated and upgraded. • horizontal line across screen at startup

  I recently ran an upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 and was using Nvidia current tested drivers and all seemed ok at first. Then suddenly every time I started the computer and shutdown, the graphical plymouth logo changed to text.The only changes I made to try to correct this issue were; sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-current nvidia-settings sudo apt-get --purge autoremove sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current and this made no change at all to the display. Then I read somewhere that Nouveau drivers may be the answer, so I installed them to use instead, and hey presto, the shutdown screen displays the Plymouth splash. However with startup, I get a stable purple screen, for a while, and than a thick black horizontal line appears, really ugly-looking, and then the loging screen appears to be ok. Can I correct the login screen same as the shutdown screen?
