Oracle Database Stored Procedure can be called from EJB business layer to perform complex DB specific operations. This approach will avoid overhead from frequent network hits which could impact end-user result. DB Stored Procedure can be invoked from EJB Session Bean business logic using org.eclipse.persistence.queries.StoredProcedureCall API. Using this approach requires more coding to handle the Session and Arguments of the Stored Procedure, thereby increasing effort on maintenance. EJB 3.0 introduces @NamedStoredProcedureQuery Injection to call Database Stored Procedure as NamedQueries. Where can I learn about managing domain names for my websites? [closed]

[I originally asked this question on serverfault.com, where it was closed as 'out of scope.' Hopefully it is appropriate for this forum] I am a developer who doesn't understand how to effectively manage Internet domain names. Say I registered a name with namecheap and host a website on linode. Now what is an a-record? What is a name server and do I host it with namecheap of linode? Why would I pay amazon when others are free? Does any of this matter in terms of website latency or reliability? I feel like a script kiddy, copying and pasting others' and hoping it works. Is there a book or other resource that explains all this? I know amazon is full of books about DNS, but afaik they are about setting up DNA servers for local networks, not the Internet. p.s. To emphasize, I'm asking for books or long write-ups which explain this to technically competent people, who just haven't had to think about the role of commercial registrars, name servers, commercial hosts, commercial websites and how all parts play together on the real internet (not local networks).

What is the right way to use gnome-shell integrated chat?

Please bear with me as I am still figuring out how to use gnome-shell. My question concerns how to use the integrated chat correctly. I have the following questions: 1) When people chat with me, it pops up as a notification on the hidden bar at the bottom of the screen, and then that chat stays there so I can access it later. How do I initiate a chat in this manner, without opening an empathy window? What I have been doing is Hitting super key Typing in the person's name, which brings up contacts Initiate the chat using empathy Immediately close the chat window When the person responds, it comes through as a notification. I then proceed to interact with the chat this way. 2) What is the keyboard shortcut for bringing up the notifications bar? Ideally, I would like to have the following experience Use some keyboard shortcut to bring up notifications Begin typing the name of the notification that I wish to investigate, and have the matching work in a fuzzy manner, much like Ido mode's buffer switching matching in Emacs When then right name is matched, I hit enter and then bring up the chat with that person as that popup notification. Are these behaviours supported? If not, I would be happy to work on implementing them. I am an experienced programmer, but not familiar with gnome-shell. If someone would point me in the right direction in terms of if this behaviour is supported, or where in the gnome-shell framework would I add to to get this behaviour, I would really appreciate it. Should this code/logic be included in Business Objects class or a separate class?

I have created a small application which has a three tier architecture and I have business object classes to represent entities such as User, Orders, UserType etc. In these classes I have methods that are executed when the Constuctor method of, for example, User is called. These methods perform calculations and generate details that setup data for attributes that are part of each User object. Here is the structure for the project in Visual Studio: Here is some code from the business object class User.cs: Public Class User { public string Name { get; set; } public int RandomNumber { get; set; } etc public User { Name = GetName(); RandomNumber = GetRandomNumber(); } public string GetName() { .... return name; } public int GetRandomNumber() { ... return randomNumber; } } Should this logic be included in the Business Object classes or should it be included in a Utilities class of some kind? Or in the business rules?

Are super methods in JavaScript limited to functional inheritance, as per Crockford's book?

In Douglas Crockford's "JavaScript: The Good Parts", he walks through three types of inheritance: classical, prototypal, and functional. In the part on functional inheritance he writes: "The functional pattern also gives us a way to deal with super methods." He then goes on to implement a method named "superior" on all Objects. However, in the way he uses the superior method, it just looks like he is copying the method on the super object for later use: // crockford's code: var coolcat = function(spec) { var that = cat(spec), super_get_name = that.superior('get_name'); that.get_name = function (n) { return 'like ' + super_get_name() + ' baby'; }; return that; }; The original get_name method is copied to super_get_name. I don't get what's so special about functional inheritance that makes this possible. Can't you do this with classical or prototypal inheritance? Change AccountName/LoginName for a SharePoint User (SPUser)

Consider the following: We have an account named MYDOMAIN\eholz. This accounts Active Directory Login Name changes to MYDOMAIN\eburrell Now this user was a active user in a Sharepoint 2010 team Site, and had a userProfile using the Account name MYDOMAIN\eholz. Since the AD LoginName changed to eburrell hence we need to update the Sharepoint User (SPUser object) as well update the userprofile to reflect the new account name. To update the Sharepoint User LoginName we can run the following stsadm command on the Server: STSADM –o migrateuser –oldlogin MYDOMAIN\eholz –newlogin MYDOMAIN\eburrell –ignoresidhistory However to update the Sharepoint 2010 UserProfile, i first tried running a Incremental/Full Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service… this did not work. To enable me to update the AccountName field (which is a read only field) of the UserProfile, I had to first delete the User Profile for MYDOMAIN\eholz and then run a FULL Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service which synchronizes the Sharepoint User Profiles with the AD profiles. Update: if you just run the STSADM –o migrateuser command… the profile also gets updated automatically. so all you need is to run the stsadm –o migrate user command and you dont need to delete and recreate the User Profile

Storing large array of tiles, but allowing easy access to data

I've been thinking about this for a while. I have a 2D tile bases platformer in XNA with a large array of tile data, I've been running into memory problems with large maps. (I will add chunks soon!) Currently, Each tile contains an Item along with other properties like how its rotated, if it has forground / background, etc. An Item is static and has properties like the name, tooltip, type of item, how much light it emits, the collision it does to player, etc. Examples: public class Item { public static List<Item> Items; public Collision blockCollisionType; public string nameOfItem; public bool someOtherVariable,etc,etc public static Item Air public static Item Stone; public static Item Dirt; static Item() { Items = new List<Item>() { (Stone = new Item() { nameOfItem = "Stone", blockCollisionType = Collision.Solid, }), (Air = new Item() { nameOfItem = "Air", blockCollisionType = Collision.Passable, }), }; } } Would be an Item, The array of Tiles would contain a Tile for each point, public class Tile { public Item item; //What type it is public bool onBackground; public int someOtherVariables,etc,etc } Now, Most would probably use an enum, or a form of ID to identify blocks. Well my system is really nice just to find out about an item. I can simply do tiles[x,y].item.Name To get the name for example. I realized my Item property of the tile is over 1000 Bytes! Wow! What I'm looking for is a way to use an ID (Int or byte depending on how many items) instead of an Item but still have a method for retreiving data about the type of item a tile contains.

ADF Logging In Deployed Apps

Harking back to my series on using the ADF logger and the related ADF Insider Video, I've had a couple of queries this week about using the logger from Enterprise Manager (EM). I've alluded in those previous materials to how EM can be used but it's evident that folks need a little help. So in this article, I'll quickly look at how you can switch logging on from the EM console for an application and how you can view the output. Before we start I'm assuming that you have EM up and running, in my case I have a small test install of Fusion Middleware Patchset 5 with an ADF application deployed to a managed server. Step 1 - Select your Application In the EM navigator select the app you're interested in: At this point you can actually bring up the context ( right mouse click) menu to jump to the logging, but let's do it another way. Step 2 - Open the Application Deployment Menu At the top of the screen, underneath the application name, you'll find a drop down menu which will take you to the options to view log messages and configure logging, thus: Step 3 - Set your Logging Levels Just like the log configuration within JDeveloper, we can set up transient or permanent (not recommended!) loggers here. In this case I've filtered the class list down to just oracle.demo, and set the log level to config. You can now go away and do stuff in the app to generate log entries. Step 4 - View the Output Again from the Application Deployment menu we can jump to the log viewer screen and, as I have here, start to filter down the logging output to the stuff you're interested in. In this case I've filtered by module name. You'll notice here that you can again look at related log messages. Importantly, you'll also see the name of the log file that holds this message, so it you'd rather analyse the log in more detail offline, through the ODL log analyser in JDeveloper, then you can see which log to download.

Is it a good practice to create a list of definitions for all symbols and words in a programming language?

After arriving at this point in Learning Python The Hard Way I am wondering if this is a good practice to create a list of symbols and define what they do as noted in bold below, for every programming language. This seems reasonable, and might be very useful to have when jumping between programming languages? Is this something that programmers do or is it just a waste of effort? Exercise 22: What Do You Know So Far? There won't be any code in this exercise or the next one, so there's no WYSS or Extra Credit either. In fact, this exercise is like one giant Extra Credit. I'm going to have you do a form of review what you have learned so far. First, go back through every exercise you have done so far and write down every word and symbol (another name for 'character') that you have used. Make sure your list of symbols is complete. Next to each word or symbol, write its name and what it does. If you can't find a name for a symbol in this book, then look for it online. If you do not know what a word or symbol does, then go read about it again and try using it in some code. You may run into a few things you just can't find out or know, so just keep those on the list and be ready to look them up when you find them. Once you have your list, spend a few days rewriting the list and double checking that it's correct. This may get boring but push through and really nail it down. Once you have memorized the list and what they do, then you should step it up by writing out tables of symbols, their names, and what they do from memory. When you hit some you can't recall from memory, go back and memorize them again.

VPNs - The ins and outs of IPSec & VPNs in general [on hold]

I have to decided to mess around with VPNs on my home router, to access a couple of servers in the back room of my house, however, I went into this thinking happy thoughts and easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy... Now I feel like doing drugs, as if maybe that will help me understand the myriad of terms which come with this nifty little tool. Basically, I do understand WHAT a VPN is, but I have no idea how to set one up. I have a Cisco router ( will supply more info if needed ), and would prefer to use IPSec for this ordeal. I'd like to have the following terms explained ( and yes, I have used the famous Google to help, close but no cigar ) : "Local Secure Group", "Remote Secure Group", "Remote Secure Gateway", how different types of "Keys" work ( again, I know the basics ), and for the "Add VPN Config" screen on the connecting device: "Server, does it have to be an address, or just an IP?", "Account; is this the tunnel name?", I am going to assume 'Password' means the Key, "Group Name; or is THIS the tunnel name?", and "Secret; I halfish know what this is..." I would really appreciate any contribution made, no matter how small, even if it includes a redirect. I just want to learn. Thanks in advance! Magus

designing solution to dynamically load class

Background Information I have a web app that allows end users to connect to ssh-enabled devices and manipulate them. Right now, i only support one version of firmware. The logic is something like this: user clicks on a button to run some command on device. web application looks up the class name containing the correct ssh interface for the device, using the device's model name. (because the number of hardware models is so small, i have a list that's hardcoded in my web app) web app creates a new ssh object using the class loaded in step 2. ssh command is run and session closed. command results displayed on web page. This all works fine. Now the end user wants me to be able to support multiple versions of firmware. But the catch is, they don't want to have to document the firmware version anywhere becuase the amount of overhead this will create in maintaining the system database. In other words, I can't look up the firmware version based on the device. The good news is that it sounds like at most, I'll have to support two different versions of firmware per device. One option is to name the the classes like this: deviceX.1.php deviceX.2.php deviceY.1.php deviceY.2.php where "X" and "Y" represent the model names, and 1 and 2 represent the firmware versions. When a user runs a command, I will first try it with one of the class files, if it fails, i can try with the second. I think always try the newer version of firmware first... so let's say in the above example, I would load deviceX.2.php before deviceX.1.php. This will work, but it's not very efficient. But I can't think of another way around this. Any suggestions?

Overlapping text on top menu in Unity 12.04

So I'm new to Linux but am basically blown away by Ubuntu 12.04 and could definitely see this becoming my main desktop over time One small annoyance for me is a tendency for the global menu on the top bar to partially over-write the text description of the active window in the top panel. e.g. I focus on the "Ubuntu Software Centre" window which writes out that label in the leftmost corner of the top menu bar. If I then move the cursor up to the top menu bar to access the "file menu", this will partially overwrite the window name leaving just "Ubuntu" visible. This is a little slice of ugliness I don't want to see every day! Much easier on the eye for me would be to display the active window name at the centre of the top panel, using some of that free space and then have the global menu stay where it is, just to the right of the app launcher. I've found a solution to disable the global menu but I would prefer to keep it and instead move (or disable) the active window name in the top panel. Any way to do this?

Calling a WCF service from another WCF service

Hi ! I have a WCF service hosted on a windows service on my Server1. It also has IIS on this machine. I call the service from a web app and it works fine. But within this service, I have to call another WCF sevice (also hosted on a windows service) located on Server2. The security credentials are set to "Message" and "Username". I have an error like "SOAP protcol negociation failed". It's a problem with my server certificate public key that doesn't seem to be recognise. However, if I call the service on the Server2 from Server1 in a console app, it works fine. WPF Customized TabControl

I have to develop a customized tab control and decided to create it with WPF/XAML, because I planned to learn it anyway. It should look like this when it's finished: I made good progress so far, but there are two issues left: Only the first/last tab item should have a rounded upper-left/bottom-left corner. Is it possible to modify the style of these items, similar to the way I did with the selected tab item? The selected tab item should not have a border on its right side. I tried to accomplish this with z-index and overlapping, but the results were rather disappointing. Is there any other way to do this? If I remove the import and the reference to "xsd:schema" respectively then the binding compiler generates successfully the classes. SWFupload adding extra extension?

Hi Everyone, I've been struggling with this for a half day and can't seem to figure out why SWFupload is adding an extra extension to my uploads?
