  This is my first blog post for new year 2011 and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the readers for making my blog very successful and accepting me a community member. As year 2010 has lots of up down in IT filed it was recession period and now we almost recovered from it. Personally year 2010 has been very successful to me as I have been awarded as Microsoft Most Valuable Professional for visual C#. And It was one of the greatest achievement of my life. I would like to take this opportunity to thanks Microsoft for this and thanks all friends specially Jacob Sebastian who has given me guidance any time I required it. I have been also awarded dzone most valuable blogger this year and it was a nice surprise from dzone. I would like thanks dzone for this. Once again I am wishing you happy new year and may this year will bring success to all of you. One more thing I have found that I have met lots of people who is quite intelligent and exceptional developers and IT professionals but they are not blogging their stuff.   I copied a Windows XP VM that I've been using on my Mac (VMWare Fusion)to a Windows 7 machine that has VMWare 7 installed. I was quite pleased when it started up and appeared to work, but when I actually tried to use it, I noticed it runs very slowly. Unusably so. It takes about 10 minutes, for example, for a Visual Studio 2010 project to open (with VS 2010 running in the VM). Is this supposed to work? Is there any way to fix this VM to get it to run well under Windows VMWare Player?

• Real world pitfalls of introducing F# into a large codebase and engineering team

  I'm CTO of a software firm with a large existing codebase (all C#) and a sizable engineering team. I can see how certain parts of the code would be far easier to write in F#, resulting in faster development time, fewer bugs, easier parallel implementations, etc., basically overall productivity gains for my team. However, I can also see several productivity pitfalls of introducing F#, namely: 1) Everyone has to learn F#, and it's not as trivial as switching from, say, Java to C#. Team members that have not learned F# will be unable to work on F# parts of the codebase. 2) The pool of hireable F# programmers, as of now (Dec 2010) is non-existent. Search various software engineer resume databases for "F#", way less than 1% of resumes contain the keyword. 3) Community support as of now (Dec 2010) is less available. You can google almost any problem in C# and find someone that has already dealt with it, not so with F#. Third party tool support (NUnit, Resharper etc) is also sketchy. I realize that this is a bit Catch-22, i.e. if people like me don't use F# then the community and tools will never materialize, etc. But, I've got a company to run, and I can be cutting edge but not bleeding edge. Any other pitfalls I'm not considering? Or anyone care to rebut the pitfalls I've mentioned? I think this is an important discussion and would love to hear your counter-arguments in this public forum that may do a lot to increase F# adoption by industry. Thanks.

  Do you have event dates that you need to make note of while browsing in Internet Explorer? Adding those events to your Live Calendar is easy to do with the Add Events to Windows Live Calendar accelerator. Adding Events to your Live Calendar To add the accelerator click on Add to Internet Explorer and then confirm the installation when the secondary window appears. For our example we chose the “estimated” availability date of Microsoft Office 2010 to the public. At the bottom of the pre-order page we found the date we were looking for. To add an event highlight the desired text (will become event description) and select the Add an Event to Windows Live Calendar listing in the context menu. A new tab will be opened where you can add any relevant details or make final tweaks to the description before saving the event. Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz with 8 GB RAM and integrated graphics (Mac Book Pro 13") Core i7 @ 2.6 GHz with 4 GB RAM and 512 MB dedicated graphics (Mac Book Pro 15") I plan to run Windows x64 in the VM with SQL Server 2008, Visual Studio 2010, and SharePoint 2010. I am planning to run VMWare Fusion v3. I also didn't know if a dedicated graphics card makes a difference when using a Virtual Machine. Thank you.

  An advantage of SharePoint 2010 over SharePoint 2007 is, we can programatically change the URL of System Application Pages. For Example, It was not very easy to change the URL of AccessDenied.aspx page in SharePoint 2007 but in SharePoint 2010 we can easily change the URL with just few lines of code. For this purpose we have two methods available: GetMappedPage UpdateMappedPage: returns true if the custom application page is successfully mapped; otherwise, false. You can override following pages. • Fixing some Visual Studio RC install issues

  The Visual Studio RC has shown some install issues in some cases, particularly for those who upgrades from VS 11 Beta.  I have listed the fixes known now below, and will update if there are more issues.  Note that a repair will not fix the issue, and a Windows restore and subsequent reinstall may not fix it either.  The system seems to remember too much. That was the case for me, at least.  The fixes below however, cures these issues. 1. The Team Explorer Build node doesn’t work You get an error saying System.TypeLoadException like this: To solve this do as follows: 1. Open a command prompt as administrator 2. Go to your program files directory for VS 2012 and down to  the extension folder like:   C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\CommonExtensions\Microsoft\TeamFoundation\Team Explorer 3. Run “gacutil –if Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Controls.dll     2. The SQL Editor gives loading error When you start up VS 2012 RC you get a loading error message.  The same happens if you try to go from the menu to  SQL/Transact-SQL Editor/New Query.    To solve this do as follows: 1. Open Control Panel/Programs and Features 2. Locate the “Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data-Tier App Framework     (Note , you might find up to 4 such instances) The ones with version numbers ending in 55 is from the SQL 2012 RC, the ones ending in 60 is from the SQL 2012 RTM.  There are two of each, one for x32 and one for x64.  Which is which no one knows. 3. Right click each of them, and select Repair. (It would be nice if someone with this issue tries only the latest RTM ones, and see if that clears the error, and comment back to this post. I am out of non-functioning VS’s )   3.  Errors referring to some extension You get errors referring to some extension that can’t be loaded, or can’t be found.  Check the activity log (see below), and verify there.  If you see yellow collision warnings there, the fix here should solve those too. To solve these:    1. Open a Visual Studio 2012 command prompt 2.  Run:   devenv /resetsettings     How to check for errors using the log Do as follows to get to the activity log for Visual studio 2012 RC 1. Open a Visual Studio 2012 command prompt 2. Run:   devenv /log This starts up Visual Studio.  3. Go to %appdata%/Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0 4. Double click the file named ActivityLog.xml.  It will start up in your browser, and be formatted using the xslt in the same directory. 5.  Look for items marked in red.  Example for Issue 1 :

• Basic OpenVPN setup not working

  I am attempting to connect 2 win7 (x64+ x32) computers (there will be 4 in total) using OpenVPN. Right now they are on the same network but the intention is to be able to access the client remotely regardless of its location. The Problem I am having is I am unable to ping or tracert between the two computers. They seem to be on different subnets even though I have the mask set to 255.255.255.0. The server ends up as 10.8.0.1 255.255.255.252 and the client 10.8.0.6 255.255.255.252. And a third ends up as 10.8.0.10. I don't know if this a Windows 7 problem or something I have wrong in my config. • Proxy Error 502 "Reason: Error reading from remote server" with Apache 2.2.3 (Debian) mod_proxy and Jetty 6.1.18

  Apache is receiving requests at port :80 and proxying them to Jetty at port :8080 The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server The proxy server could not handle the request GET /. My dilemma: Everything works fine normally (fast requests, few seconds or few tens of seconds long requests are processed ok). Problems occur when request processing takes long (few minutes?). If I issue request instead directly to Jetty at port :8080 the request is processed OK. So problem is likely to sit somewhere between Apache and Jetty where I am using mod_proxy. How to solve this? I have already tried some "tricks" related to KeepAlive settings, without luck.
