• How to gain admin privileges on D-Link router if my isp is not allowing me to do so?

  So I switched to new ISP yesterday, they gave me a D-Link router, can't use my old router. I want to change the wireless password, went to 192.168.1.1, I can login with the the username and password user user, but not as admin. On the catalog it says that the default username and password are admin admin, tried that didn't work. Tried admin and no pass, tried many combinations, none worked. I asked some other users and they said that the isp is blocking the users from logging in as admins, and blocking the reset button, and said that there's a hack where you do something like: cmd telnet "router ip" and do something like dumpcfg. Could you please give a better explanation on how to gain admin privileges on your own router if your isp is not letting you do so by default?

• Web developing- Strange happenings

  As I'm teaching myself PHP and MySQL during break, I'm experimenting coding in a Ubuntu virtual machine where Apache, MySQL and PHP have been installed and configured to a shared folder. I'm not a big fan of Kompozer because the source code layout is a PIA, so I've started checking out gPHPEdit. However, since using it, I've come across two issues: when I edit the .html and .php files, sometimes the file extension will change to .html~ and .php~, becoming invisible to the browser. The only solution is to switch to Windows, right click and rename the file extension. In Ubuntu Firefox, when I click on my prpject's Submit button for in a practice form, a dialog box pops up asking what Firefox should do with the .php file, rather than simply displaying it in the browser. When I do this in Windows Chrome & Firefox, it goes right to the response page. I'm not sure if this behavior is limited to gPHPEdit/Kompozer, but I've never noticed this happening in Dreamweaver. Any solutions? EDIT The behavior in Point 1 occurs both when Dreamweaver is open in Windows accessing the same files and when it is not. I changed the extension filename of welcome.php, added a comment in gPHPEdit, and the file changed to welcome.php~ upon saving.

• Configuring a Genius GW-7200 Access Point

  I came across an access point we had a few years ago. I'm now trying to get it set up to work on our network. here are a couple of pictures: http://twitpic.com/194u06/full http://twitpic.com/194u0v/full I have plugged this into our network via the network port on the back. I set up a DHCP reservation, based on the MAC address on the back of the access point, however I cannot ping it, nor access the web interface. I've held down the reset button for 10 seconds, to see if that would do anything. Google doesn't come up with anything on the matter :-(

• Winamp jump dialog

  In the most recent build of Winamp, either the Jump dialog has been ruined or there's some hidden "advanced" setting that i'm missing. The Jump dialog used to have a few options, like "Jump to file and play" "Jump to file without playing" "Queue file to start playing next, after this song finishes" But now it only shows (CANCEL) as the only button, and you can press enter on a file to start play. What happened to the JUMP & QUEUE feature? I want to jump to a file, but QUEUE it to be played next, not play it immediately.

• Can't add to panel nor delete panel

  Hello everybody! I cannot add any applet to any (top or bottom) panel, cannot delete any panel nor create a new panel. When I right-click on the panel the only options available are: Properties, Help or About panels. [I cannot post an image because of spam prevention, so I'll do my best] I can see when I right-click (bold means clickable): Add to panel Properties Delete this panel New panel Help About Panels Trying to solve this I did what is usually suggested: gconftool-2 –-recursive-unset /apps/panel # might be optional rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel pkill gnome-panel but I only got a nice empty panel (no Applications Places System, no clock, no shutdown button...) to which I couldn't add any applet, so I decided to take the default profiles in .gconf and .gconfd from a live CD and overwrite mines. Now we are back to the beginning. I also have tried to lock completely the panel (with both gconf-editor and pessulus) and later unlock it completely but it didn't work. • Remote reboot over ssh does not restart

  I would like to remotely reboot my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server via ssh. I do sudo reboot and I loose connection and the server connection does not reappear. It does not ping. When I go the the physical computer with a screen attached I see a black screen and hear that the server is still on. I do a hard power off (press power on button for a few seconds) and the server halts. After I press power on the server boots with no problem. As far as I remember the remote reboot has previously worked on that server. I wonder if sudo reboot & will help? I suppose I could also try sudo shutdown -r and see if that does any difference. I have listed an excerpt of /etc/log/syslog below. The last thing it records is the stopping of the logging. • Where is the Flash in Chrome?

  I installed Google Chrome. This is the first thing I did after installing Ubuntu. I went into firefox, and went to chrome.google.com, and hit the button. I don't like package managers, and avoid the command line like the pox. Then, I started using Google Chrome. I went to Kongregate, and clicked on a game. It told me I didn't have flash. A few different websites told me the same. I assumed that they must have been wrong. I hit the link to Adobe, to install Flash, and it reassured me; of course, Google Chrome includes Flash. I checked my version - Chrome 5.0.375.126. Of course, I just downloaded it. I scoured the internet for solutions. None worked. Many seemed to involve re-enabling Flash, or something like that. But insofar as I can tell, there is no Flash anywhere in my Chrome. I feel like I bought a Reese's cup, and found solid chocolate. I checked in the Chrome plugin manager, and everything. A few solutions told me to copy some garbage into my command line and hit enter (as almost all solutions to problems on linux entail). I did it, reluctantly, and it did nothing. I thought Flash was supposed to come with Chrome. But it didn't. Sooooo... What gives? • Announcing: Great Improvements to Windows Azure Web Sites

  I’m excited to announce some great improvements to the Windows Azure Web Sites capability we first introduced earlier this summer.  Today’s improvements include: a new low-cost shared mode scaling option, support for custom domains with shared and reserved mode web-sites using both CNAME and A-Records (the later enabling naked domains), continuous deployment support using both CodePlex and GitHub, and FastCGI extensibility.  All of these improvements are now live in production and available to start using immediately. New “Shared” Scaling Tier Windows Azure allows you to deploy and host up to 10 web-sites in a free, shared/multi-tenant hosting environment. You can start out developing and testing web sites at no cost using this free shared mode, and it supports the ability to run web sites that serve up to 165MB/day of content (5GB/month).  All of the capabilities we introduced in June with this free tier remain the same with today’s update. Starting with today’s release, you can now elastically scale up your web-site beyond this capability using a new low-cost “shared” option (which we are introducing today) as well as using a “reserved instance” option (which we’ve supported since June).  Scaling to either of these modes is easy.  Simply click on the “scale” tab of your web-site within the Windows Azure Portal, choose the scaling option you want to use with it, and then click the “save” button.  Changes take only seconds to apply and do not require any code to be changed, nor the app to be redeployed: Below are some more details on the new “shared” option, as well as the existing “reserved” option: Shared Mode With today’s release we are introducing a new low-cost “shared” scaling mode for Windows Azure Web Sites.  A web-site running in shared mode is deployed in a shared/multi-tenant hosting environment.  Unlike the free tier, though, a web-site in shared mode has no quotas/upper-limit around the amount of bandwidth it can serve.  The first 5 GB/month of bandwidth you serve with a shared web-site is free, and then you pay the standard “pay as you go” Windows Azure outbound bandwidth rate for outbound bandwidth above 5 GB. A web-site running in shared mode also now supports the ability to map multiple custom DNS domain names, using both CNAMEs and A-records, to it.  The new A-record support we are introducing with today’s release provides the ability for you to support “naked domains” with your web-sites (e.g. http://microsoft.com in addition to http://www.microsoft.com).  We will also in the future enable SNI based SSL as a built-in feature with shared mode web-sites (this functionality isn’t supported with today’s release – but will be coming later this year to both the shared and reserved tiers). You pay for a shared mode web-site using the standard “pay as you go” model that we support with other features of Windows Azure (meaning no up-front costs, and you pay only for the hours that the feature is enabled).  A web-site running in shared mode costs only 1.3 cents/hr during the preview (so on average $9.36/month). Reserved Instance Mode In addition to running sites in shared mode, we also support scaling them to run within a reserved instance mode.  When running in reserved instance mode your sites are guaranteed to run isolated within your own Small, Medium or Large VM (meaning no other customers run within it).  You can run any number of web-sites within a VM, and there are no quotas on CPU or memory limits. You can run your sites using either a single reserved instance VM, or scale up to have multiple instances of them (e.g. 2 medium sized VMs, etc).  Scaling up or down is easy – just select the “reserved” instance VM within the “scale” tab of the Windows Azure Portal, choose the VM size you want, the number of instances of it you want to run, and then click save.  Changes take effect in seconds: Unlike shared mode, there is no per-site cost when running in reserved mode.  Instead you pay only for the reserved instance VMs you use – and you can run any number of web-sites you want within them at no extra cost (e.g. you could run a single site within a reserved instance VM or 100 web-sites within it for the same cost).  Reserved instance VMs start at 8 cents/hr for a small reserved VM.  Elastic Scale-up/down Windows Azure Web Sites allows you to scale-up or down your capacity within seconds.  This allows you to deploy a site using the shared mode option to begin with, and then dynamically scale up to the reserved mode option only when you need to – without you having to change any code or redeploy your application. If your site traffic starts to drop off, you can scale back down the number of reserved instances you are using, or scale down to the shared mode tier – all within seconds and without having to change code, redeploy, or adjust DNS mappings.  You can also use the “Dashboard” view within the Windows Azure Portal to easily monitor your site’s load in real-time (it shows not only requests/sec and bandwidth but also stats like CPU and memory usage). Because of Windows Azure’s “pay as you go” pricing model, you only pay for the compute capacity you use in a given hour.  So if your site is running most of the month in shared mode (at 1.3 cents/hr), but there is a weekend when it gets really popular and you decide to scale it up into reserved mode to have it run in your own dedicated VM (at 8 cents/hr), you only have to pay the additional pennies/hr for the hours it is running in the reserved mode.  There is no upfront cost you need to pay to enable this, and once you scale back down to shared mode you return to the 1.3 cents/hr rate.  This makes it super flexible and cost effective. Improved Custom Domain Support Web sites running in either “shared” or “reserved” mode support the ability to associate custom host names to them (e.g. www.mysitename.com).  You can associate multiple custom domains to each Windows Azure Web Site.  With today’s release we are introducing support for A-Records (a big ask by many users). With the A-Record support, you can now associate ‘naked’ domains to your Windows Azure Web Sites – meaning instead of having to use www.mysitename.com you can instead just have mysitename.com (with no sub-name prefix).  Because you can map multiple domains to a single site, you can optionally enable both a www and naked domain for a site (and then use a URL rewrite rule/redirect to avoid SEO problems). We’ve also enhanced the UI for managing custom domains within the Windows Azure Portal as part of today’s release.  Clicking the “Manage Domains” button in the tray at the bottom of the portal now brings up custom UI that makes it easy to manage/configure them: As part of this update we’ve also made it significantly smoother/easier to validate ownership of custom domains, and made it easier to switch existing sites/domains to Windows Azure Web Sites with no downtime. Continuous Deployment Support with Git and CodePlex or GitHub One of the more popular features we released earlier this summer was support for publishing web sites directly to Windows Azure using source control systems like TFS and Git.  This provides a really powerful way to manage your application deployments using source control.  It is really easy to enable this from a website’s dashboard page: The TFS option we shipped earlier this summer provides a very rich continuous deployment solution that enables you to automate builds and run unit tests every time you check in your web-site, and then if they are successful automatically publish to Azure. With today’s release we are expanding our Git support to also enable continuous deployment scenarios and integrate with projects hosted on CodePlex and GitHub.  This support is enabled with all web-sites (including those using the “free” scaling mode). Starting today, when you choose the “Set up Git publishing” link on a website’s “Dashboard” page you’ll see two additional options show up when Git based publishing is enabled for the web-site: You can click on either the “Deploy from my CodePlex project” link or “Deploy from my GitHub project” link to walkthrough a simple workflow to configure a connection between your website and a source repository you host on CodePlex or GitHub.  Once this connection is established, CodePlex or GitHub will automatically notify Windows Azure every time a checkin occurs.  This will then cause Windows Azure to pull the source and compile/deploy the new version of your app automatically.  The below two videos walkthrough how easy this is to enable this workflow and deploy both an initial app and then make a change to it: Enabling Continuous Deployment with Windows Azure Websites and CodePlex (2 minutes) Enabling Continuous Deployment with Windows Azure Websites and GitHub (2 minutes) This approach enables a really clean continuous deployment workflow, and makes it much easier to support a team development environment using Git: Note: today’s release supports establishing connections with public GitHub/CodePlex repositories.  Support for private repositories will be enabled in a few weeks. Support for multiple branches Previously, we only supported deploying from the git ‘master’ branch.  Often, though, developers want to deploy from alternate branches (e.g. a staging or future branch). This is now a supported scenario – both with standalone git based projects, as well as ones linked to CodePlex or GitHub.  This enables a variety of useful scenarios.  For example, you can now have two web-sites - a “live” and “staging” version – both linked to the same repository on CodePlex or GitHub.  You can configure one of the web-sites to always pull whatever is in the master branch, and the other to pull what is in the staging branch.  This enables a really clean way to enable final testing of your site before it goes live. This 1 minute video demonstrates how to configure which branch to use with a web-site. • Manage Sending 2010 Documents to the Web with Office Upload Center

  One of the main new features being touted in Office 2010 is the ability to upload documents to the Web for sharing and collaboration. Today we look at using Office Upload Center to help manage your uploaded documents. Microsoft Office Upload Center  When you upload an Office 2010 document to the web, a handy tool to manage them is the Office Upload Center. It’s a way to see what is being uploaded or what might have failed to reach the servers. It lets you know if a document failed to upload for some reason. In this case it looks like the incorrect credentials were entered when signing into Windows Live. Click on the Resolve button to get a list of actions you can take to get things corrected.   You can access the Upload Center from the icon which appears on the System Tray when uploading documents. Right-click the icon to control notifications, pause uploads, and access its settings. In the Settings section you can choose how Upload Center displays notifications, select the number of days to keep files in Cache, and delete currently cached files. If you find yourself uploading several documents to the web during the day, the Office Upload Center is a nice feature for managing them. • Boot failure after update and system crash 11.10

  I'm using: Dell XPS M1330 laptop, Ubuntu 11.10 32bits, single boot (only Linux OS), Virtualbox (with Windows XP on virtual machine). System crashed while working with a very heavy image on GIMP (and Virtualbox was on). During the same session, I made an automatic system update, but don't know what was exactly updated. After the crash the system doesn't boot. Always freezes on terminal screen but at different stages, ""Starting CUPS printing spooler/server", "Checking battery state", "mountall: plymouth command failed", etc. Sometimes indicates [failed] in some of the processes and sometimes they're all [ok]. Did a Boot info summary with boot-repair and gave me this report http://paste.ubuntu.com/1050743/ This is not a new install, have been using it for almost 6 months...though since last month it couldn't halt..it started shutting down and stopped at black screen with fan on and on/off light still on (I used to finish the shutdown process by forcing halt with a long-press of the power button). I don't know if these has anything to do with the boot failure. Is there anyway I can solve this issue (the boot failure) or make some sort of system check to find out what is the cause of the problem?   I hate it, when sites decide for me, which links should open in a new window, and which in the same. The back-button doesn't work. Good thing is, firefox has the option browser.link.open_newwindow. If I set this to 1, all links with target=blank open in the same window, as it should be. But now also clicks in external programs (like the email-client or newsreader) on links open this in the same window, destroying the already opened website. How can I configure firefox to open links in a website always in the same window, but in external programs opened URLs always in a new one?

• Unpredictable MBP wake from sleep in Windows 7 Boot Camp

  I have a Macbook Pro with Windows 7 installed in Boot Camp. I have serious problems with waking from sleep and not sure why. I have the default Balanced power plan selected. Many times when I close the laptop and leave it for more than just a few minutes, when I open it back up, it does not awake immediately. I often end up having to press the power button just to get it to wake up. Sometimes this causes it to wake up in Windows mode, sometimes it reboots completely, sometimes the battery has been drained and Windows has to restart (and gives me the Windows did not shut down properly message). Is this a common problem with Boot Camp? Can I fix it?

• How to structure an application that combines WCF and WPF

  I'm in the process of learning how to use WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) to allow a client/server desktop application to communicate. The application's UI will be implemented using WPF, and we will probably use SQL Server for our database. What I'm struggling with, is understanding how to structure such an application. From what I've read, there are three components of a WCF application (which in the examples I've seen have existed as separate projects): A WCF service A WCF service host A WCF service client My question then, is - should these projects solely implement the functionality of sending/receiving data from the client/server? Would it make better sense this way? Would it make sense to create a separate WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) project to implement the UI for the application? And so, when I need to send/receive data from the client/server, I could simply invoke the operations provided in the WCF projects that I have created? For anyone who has built similar applications previously, perhaps you could explain what worked best for you in terms of structuring your application? For example, if I create a user registration page. When the user clicks the 'Register' button, the client application will need to send the data to the server. In this case, could I just invoke the methods provided in the WCF projects to send the data? Also, what data structures worked best for you when sending/receiving data? My initial thought is sending/receiving XML containing the data. Is this an option that is easy to implement? I realise that answers to this question may well be a matter of opinion - unless there are specific best practices that I'm not aware of. Thank you

  I have been researching a lot about this and I cannot seem to find any useful information about this topic, what so ever. I have now been using Ubuntu in one week, and have gotten pretty confident with almost everything. Except keyboard layout and shortcuts. If you know a tutorial or a documents explaining keyboard shortcuts in Ubuntu or linux in general, can you please list it? I use a Mac Book Pro with a Norwegian keyboard, and I have several questions about this: Is there a program for having a consise list of absolutely all keyboard shortcuts, and be able to change them? How do I use my fn keys? (fn button doesnt do the job for some reason) How can I use my alt+letter-key-or-number-key or alt+shift+letter-key-or-number-key to get fancy characters. (Like I do on Mac OS X) How can I swap cmd and ctrl key system wide? Also I really want to be oriented around this subject, since this is the only thing holding me back on Ubuntu, so if there exists some in-depth material on this, it would be great.   I've seen programs like Synergy before which allow a keyboard and mouse to be used across multiple systems. Unfortunately Synergy treats both systems like they are the same thing (when you move the mouse too far to the right it jumps to the other computer, along with keyboard input). I only have 1 monitor so what I need to do here is have a quick way to view my other desktop that is easy to manage. Remote desktop is difficult because you have to take it out of fullscreen, then minimize it and then re-maximize it when you want to use it again. If there were a single button I could hit to switch to the other computer that would be optimal. Both computers are on the same lan.

• How are events in games handled?

  In may games that I have played, I have seen events being triggered, such as when you walk into a certain land area while holding a specific object, it will trigger a special creature to spawn. I was wondering, how do games deal with events such as this? Not in a specific game, but in general among games. The first thought I had was that each place has a hard-coded set of events that it will call when something happens there. However, that would be too inefficient to maintain, as when something new is added, that would require modification of every part of the game that would potentially cause the event to be called. Next up, I had the idea of maybe how GUI programming works. In all of the GUI programming I've done, you create a component and a callback function, or a listener. Then, when the user interacts when the button, the callback function is called, allowing you to do something with it. So, I was thinking that in terms of a game, when a land area gets loaded the game loops over a list of all events, creating instances of them and calling public methods to bind them to the current scene. The events themselves then handle what scene it is, and if it is a scene that pertains to the event, will call the public method of the scene to bind the event to an action. Then, when the action takes place, the scene would call all events that are bound to that action. However, I'm sure that's not how games would operate either, as that would require a lot of creating of events all the time. So how to video games handle events, are either of those methods correct, or is it something completely different?

  I have an Aruba wireless system that is currently in use but there is no documentation from the previous person in charge. I have no manuals or login information for the wireless controllers and APs. I checked the Aruba website and you need to register to access the support information but registration isn't instant and takes several days. I've waited for quite a while now and have tried googling and checking the Aruba forums but have found no indication of a manual. What I really need is the ability to reset the controller and APs so I can access the device with the default username and password. There is no reset button on this device so I have no idea how you go about resetting the controller and APs. Hm it seems I can't create a new tag as a new user. If possible can someone add an "Aruba" tag?

• Libgdx Box2d createfixture crashes vm intermittently

  I have a hard to debug problem. I have a Box2D game which creates a wheeled vehicle. I want the vehicle body to reflect when it goes from moving left to moving right. to do this i set a flag in a changelistener on a button and then in update method i destroy and recreate the body facing the other way. it works fine most of the time but if i flip the vehicle several times quickly JVM crashes. no errors nothing in log. i added system.out.prints and the errors occur in the routine that instantiates the new body and before anything gets deleted/removed so i don't think the UI is trying to access null pointers. and if it was it should throw an error. M the crash seems to be at createFixture statements. but the work most of the first time. I tried debugging but the error doesn't happen much when the flips are slow. in any case createFixture drops fairly quickly into jni. Is this a Box2D bug? Is GC the issue? From Mission Control I see the GC is collecting on a period of ooh maybe 5s and flipping slower than that mostly works. how do i debug this? i am win7 64bit with 64bit at and jdk7 64bit. libgdx-0.9.9 and sometimes libgdx-nightly-20140215.

• Windows 8 + Ubuntu dualboot problem - ubuntu does not load after windows updates

  I have installed Windows 8 64-bit and Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit in dualboot with EFI mode. Everything worked great. I could run Ubuntu or Windows without any problems. Only one little issue was that Windows locked NTFS partitions when I shut it down. When I clicked on restart button in Windows and started Ubuntu, partitions mounted successfully. But today ... I opened windows and downloaded all available updates. When I wanted to come back to Ubuntu I noticed that grub did not count down seconds to automatic start. After choosing Ubuntu option manually, the OS did not load. Just black screen with white underscore in the upper left corner. Windows is accessible always without such issues. Last time I solved it by reinstalling ubuntu but I dont want to do it each time windows downloads some updates. Have you ever meet such problem, or do you know how to solve it? EDIT Ubuntu boots, but it won't start. It ends on loading screen.

• Recover from a corrupted couchbase install

  We have a couchbase installation on a Windows 2008 R2 server that got corrupted (this was from before my tenure, now I want to clean it up). There is no add-remove entry in the Programs and Features list. There is no active service in services.msc. However, something still thinks Couchbase is installed. Shy of wiping the box (we aren't quite to "redeploy test environment servers at the push of a button" altho I'm working on it), how can I ensure that all remnants of couchbase installs prior are now gone? I believe the previous install was in the Couchbase 2.x range, but it may have been 1.7+ Running the installer again gives "Installer needs to update registry value in order to upgrade from the previous version. Please run installer again to continue."

• Graphics card failure, anything I could try...

  My gaming PC has decided to die, it's not the first time but usually a quick ATX reset brings it back to life. Today it didn't. I disconnect all unessasary devices so I've only got the case button / LED cables, GPU, CPU, RAM and power connected, the computer still didn't turn on. I've not got a speaker on my motherboard so found a spare one I have for testing and when the machine starts up I get one long beep and two short beeps from my Award BIOS, which apparently means a video card error. I change it with the GPU from another machine and all works well. Q: So I have a faulty graphics card (an nVidia 8800GT OC), is there anything I can try to resurect it?
