• Avoid apt-get update while installing softwares on ubuntu, possible?

  I want to install a 27KB lens( reddit-lens: here ) & this "apt-get update" is going to download 20MBs(!) of data for the same. I want to avoid this update bcoz i am on a limited bandwidth connection. I also tried to install .deb file(27KB) for this lens but it says "dependancy is not satisfiable gir1.2-unity-3.0". I went on to http://www.pkgs.org to get that package & there is no version available for ubuntu 12.04. What should I do? Can i install softwares without updating cache? Is that update necessary? Also installation of some softwares requires updating cache while others dont, why?

• How can I repair a ttf-umefont installation

  I have Ubuntu 13.04 and I started to upgrade to 13.10. Upgrading started well, files were sucessfully downloaded but a crash message appeared: <type ´exceptions.SystemError´> (E: The package ttf-umefont needs to be reinstalled, but I can´t find an archive for it) I looked for some info in fórums then I tried to update by terminal and with apt-get -f update. nothing changed; then, I triued to delete the ttf-umefont file, and nothing changed. Now, I can´t update anything because this error message. Could anyone help me?

  When I try to update my Ubuntu 10.04 installation to 10.10 I get the following error. Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: Trying to install blacklisted version 'blcr-dkms_0.8.2-13' This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report. None of the three applies to me (I think). Now I found that this also affects someone else: https://bugs.launchpad.net/update-manager/+bug/657662 Is there here someone who knows what could be wrong? Or a workaround so that I can install Maverick Meerkat?

• How to reinstall many removed packages at once?

  I used sudo apt-get remove python command and accidently removed a bunch of packages that were required. I logged in via command line and installed ubuntu-desktop again but there are other packages that are missing, and I'm looking for a way to easily reinstall those removed packages. Since there's the log at software-center I wanted to ask what the easiest way might be to roll back changes or extract the removed packages list from the software center... note: I typed sudo apt-get install .... .... ... ... for about two dozen of those removed programs in that list, but when I pressed enter it didn't install any of them because some package names couldn't be found. The programs were removed at the same date.

• AppHarbor - Azure Done Right AKA Heroku for .NET

  Easy and Instant deployments and instant scale for .NET? Awhile back a few of us were looking at Ruby Gems as the answer to package management for .NET. The gems platform supported the concept of DLLs as packages although some changes would have needed to happen to have long term use for the entire community. From that we formed a partnership with some folks at Microsoft to make v2 into something that would meet wider adoption across the community, which people now call NuGet. So now we have the concept of package management. What comes next? Heroku Instant deployments and instant scaling. Stupid simple API. This is Heroku. It doesn’t sound like much, but when you think of how fast you can go from an idea to having someone else tinker with it, you can start to see its power. In literally seconds you can be looking at your rails application deployed and online. Then when you are ready to scale, you can do that. This is power. Some may call this “cloud-computing” or PaaS (Platform as a Service). I first ran into Heroku back in July when I met Nick of RubyGems.org. At the time there was no alternative in the .NET-o-sphere. I don’t count Windows Azure, mostly because it is not simple and I don’t believe there is a free version. Heroku itself would not lend itself well to .NET due to the nature of platforms and each language’s specific needs (solution stack).  So I tucked the idea in the back of my head and moved on. AppHarbor Enters The Scene I’m not sure when I first heard about AppHarbor as a possible .NET version of Heroku. It may have been in November, but I didn’t actually try it until January. I was instantly hooked. AppHarbor is awesome! It still has a ways to go to be considered Heroku for .NET, but it already has a growing community. I created a video series (at the bottom of this post) that really highlights how fast you can get a product onto the web and really shows the power and simplicity of AppHarbor. Deploying is as simple as a git/hg push to appharbor. From there they build your code, run any unit tests you have and deploy it if everything succeeds. The screen on the right shows a simple and elegant UI to getting things done. The folks at AppHarbor graciously gave me a limited number of invites to hand out. • "Unable to install initrd-tools" error during installation.

  Was trying to install Ubuntu from a CD on a machine which already has windows on it, choose the option of "Resize IDE1 master (hda) and use freed space" during the "Install the base system" step. After that i get the error: Unable to install initrd-tools. An error was returned while trying to install the initrd-tools package into the target system. Check /target/var/log/bootstrap.log for details. The problem is one one hand i cannot proceed with the complete installation and on other hand if i remove the CD, am not able to boot windows as it says No bootable device. Would highly appreciate for any recommendations.

• Cannot install Android 2.3 libs dies to missing ia32-libs-multiarch

  I need to get my box up to par or android development, but cannot get ia32-libs to install for the life of me. Can anyone help? The error Android's tool gave me was Stopping ADB server failed (code -1) and after a bit of investigation I found that I needed to install the ia32-libs which from my understanding is a pain. • What's the best platform for blogging about coding ?

  I'm toying with starting an occasional blog for posting odd bits of coding related stuff (mainly C++, probably). Are there any platforms which can be recommended as providing exceptionally good support (e.g syntax highlighting) for posting snippets of code ? (Or any to avoid because posting mono-spaced font blocks of text is a pain). Outcome: I accepted Josh K's answer because what I actually ended up doing was realizing I was more interested in articles than a blog style, getting back into LaTeX (after almost 20 years away from it), using the "listings" package for code, and pushing the HTML/PDF results to my ISP's static-hosting pages. (HTML generated using tex4ht). Kudos to the answers mentioning Wordpress, Tumblr and Jekyll; I spent some time looking into all of them.

• Loading XML file containing leading zeros with SSIS preserving the zeros

  Visiting the MSDN SQL Server Integration Services Forum oftentimes I could see that people would pop up asking this question: “why I am not able to load an element from an XML file that contains zeros so the leading/trailing zeros would remain intact?”. I started to suspect that such a trivial and often-required operation perhaps is being misunderstood by the developer community. I would also like to add that the whole state of affairs surrounding the XML today is probably also going to be increasingly affected by a motion of people who dislike XML in general and many aspects of it as XSD and XSLT invoke a negative reaction at best. Nevertheless, XML is in wide use today and its importance as a bridge between diverse systems is ever increasing. Therefore, I deiced to write up an example of loading an arbitrary XML file that contains leading zeros in one of its elements using SSIS so the leading zeros would be preserved keeping in mind the goal on simplicity into a table in SQL Server database. To start off bring up your BIDS (running as admin) and add a new Data Flow Task (DFT). This DFT will serve as container to adding our XML processing elements (besides, the XML Source is not available anywhere else other than from within the DFT). Double-click your DFT and drag and drop the XMS Source component from the Tool Box’s Data Flow Sources. Now, let the fun begin! Being inspired by the upcoming Christmas I created a simple XML file with one set of data that contains an imaginary SSN number of Rudolph containing several leading zeros like 0000003. This file can be viewed here. To configure the XML Source of course it is quite intuitive to point it to our XML file, next what the XML source needs is either an embedded schema (XSD) or it can generate one for us. In lack of the one I opted to auto-generate it for me and I ended up with an XSD that looked like: <?xml version="1.0"?> <xs:schema attributeFormDefault="unqualified" elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <xs:element name="XMasEvent"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element minOccurs="0" name="CaseInfo"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element minOccurs="0" name="ID" type="xs:unsignedByte" /> <xs:element minOccurs="0" name="CreatedDate" type="xs:unsignedInt" /> <xs:element minOccurs="0" name="LastName" type="xs:string" /> <xs:element minOccurs="0" name="FirstName" type="xs:string" /> <xs:element minOccurs="0" name="SSN" type="xs:unsignedByte" /> <!-- Becomes string -- > <xs:element minOccurs="0" name="DOB" type="xs:unsignedInt" /> <xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Event" type="xs:string" /> <xs:element minOccurs="0" name="ClosedDate" /> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:schema> As an aside on the XML file: if your XML file does not contain the outer node (<XMasEvent>) then you may end up in a situation where you see just one field in the output. Now please note that the SSN element’s data type was chosen to be of unsignedByte (and this is for a reason). The reason is stemming from the fact all our figures in the element are digits, this is good, but this is not exactly what we need, because if we will attempt to load the data with this XSD then we are going to either get errors on the destination or most typically lose the leading zeros. So the next intuitive choice is to change the data type to string. Besides, if a SSIS package was already created based on this XSD and the data type change was done thereafter, one should re-set the metadata by right-clicking the XML Source and choosing “Advanced Editor” in which there is a refresh button at the bottom left which will do the trick. So far so good, we are ready to load our XML file, well actually yes, and no, in my experience typically some data conversion may be required. So depending on your data destination you may need to tweak the data types targeted. Let’s add a Data Conversion Task to our DFT. Your package should look like: To make the story short I only will cover the SSN field, so in my data source the target SQL Table has it as nchar(10) and we chose string in our XSD (yes, this is a big difference), under such circumstances the SSIS will complain. So will go and manipulate on the data type of SSN by making it Unicode String (DT_WSTR), World String per se. The conversion should look like: The peek at the Metadata: We are almost there, now all we need is to configure the destination. For simplicity I chose SQL Server Destination. The mapping is a breeze, F5 and I am able to insert my data into SQL Server now! Checking the zeros – they are all intact!

When i search for kubuntu-desktop in synaptic then the download file shows nearly 4MB but i clearly remember the actual size was near 100 mb. Just for information both are already installed in my laptop. So the question is - How to download the actuall 100 mb KUbuNTU-DESKTOP so that i can just, without any hesitation install it in offline computer which is using ubuntu 12.04. Same for the GNOME 3. Please help me out !

• Installing chrome gives an error: "dependency is not satisfiable"

  I just installed ubuntu on my laptop, everything works fine, but I'd like to use chrome instead of firefox. I downloaded the .deb file from the chrome website, and when I open it, the install buton inside the software center is inactive (I can't click it) and it's telling me dependency is not satisfiable: libcurl3 I did a search for libcurl3 in the Software Center, the three results I'm getting are already installed. Any ideas how to fix this? I also tried installing chromium-browser, but that's not working out neither. • The death of Kodak digital

  Months ago Kodak announced that it was discontinuing its digital video to focus on “significant opportunities for profitable growth”.  Three years ago I picked up the little Kodak Zi6 (pronounced Zix) for the kids for Christmas.  It is an HD pocket video camera with a nice 3” LCD all built into a something a bit longer than an deck of cards.  It is low tech and great!  The kids have had a ball with it, and for around $100 it was perfect.  It comes with 2 AA rechargeable batteries and the recharger.  You can add an SD card, but don’t need to, and the USB is not a cable but a pop-out dongle so everything is right in the one package.  Too many companies look for the next big thing and fail to see the stuff that is good enough, and right in front of their eyes.

  I'm completely new to Ubuntu I downloaded and unpacked a tar.gz package, after extraction, it is said in its documentation : "type ./configure --disable-gts" But when i run this command alone it tells me "Permission Denied" error. Then i tried to use "sh ./configure --disable-gts" insted, but this time i faced this error: configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs. If you meant to cross compile, use `--host'. How can i overcome these two problems? (I mean permission and compile error) I'm just a rookie and i need urgent help. Thanx

Les deux programmes seraient même liés, puisque le navigateur serait intégré à l'OS. De plus, comme ce système à venir devrait logiquement être recentré sur le Cloud Computing et optimisé pour les tablettes (voir les news précédentes), il semble logique à certains de dire que IE10 sera tactile. I cannot find any binary downloads, but cannot build the package, because I have no other linux PC. What can I do? //EDIT: The reason why I want to do this during setup is that I want to setup an LTSP server. I only found guides that assume one has Internet connection - but I have not. What can I do?

• Why fork a library for your own application?

  Why should a programmer ever fork a library for inclusion in a widely used application? I ask this question because I was reading an article about why Chromium isn't packaged for many Linux distros like Fedora. Apparently its largely due to the fact that Google has forked a number of libraries, modified them, and included them in Chromium. This has driven up the complexity of packaging releases. There are a number of reasons why this can be a bad thing, but how strong a case can you actually make for doing so in a large widely used application such as Chromium? • Would installing debugging symbols help for reporting bugs?

  I'm running a beta version of Ubuntu (12.10) and I've been reporting crashes through apport's automated system. I've glanced at the stacktraces for a couple of the issues and noticed a lot of what look like hex addresses and these: "No symbol table info available." I was wondering if installing the debugging symbols packages from synaptic would provide better information to package maintainers when I report bugs. In other words, would the stacktrace be more useful if I installed those packages? If so, would installing those packages make any (noticeable) performances differences (will my computer run slower)?   I'm trying to setup github-pages on my Ubuntu laptop, and following the guide provided by Github I have to install the bundler package; giving the command ~$ gem install bundler returns me this error. ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::Exception) Unable to require openssl, install OpenSSL and rebuild ruby (preferred) or use non-HTTPS sources Then I have installed OpenSSL, launched the command to update software and stuff and tried again to install bundler, but the error kept showing. How can I fix this? Is there any specific command to rebuild ruby making it aware about the fact that openSSL is now installed?

• Trying to detect collision between two polygons using Separating Axis Theorem

  The only collision experience i've had was with simple rectangles, i wanted to find something that would allow me to define polygonal areas for collision and have been trying to make sense of SAT using these two links Though i'm a bit iffy with the math for the most part i feel like i understand the theory! Except my implementation somewhere down the line must be off as: (excuse the hideous font) As mentioned above i have defined a CollisionPolygon class where most of my theory is implemented and then have a helper class called Vect which was meant to be for Vectors but has also been used to contain a vertex given that both just have two float values. I've tried stepping through the function and inspecting the values to solve things but given so many axes and vectors and new math to work out as i go i'm struggling to find the erroneous calculation(s) and would really appreciate any help.   I am a php mysql developer ... just an (below) average. and i am interested in the way television and radio are broadcasted over internet live. i want to know how it works and and what are its requirements (which package of which programming language offers the best). i must admit that i am a complete layman but i expect it do by next half month or year or so. And please clarify me Websites are stored in servers. From my desktop, i want to broadcast some video, then i need to connect to webserver(to upstream the video). Is there an application to do that (or do i have to code that or embed in my web application and which programming language would be suitable(does python support that))? and i also need a script to handle the upstreamed video or audio(can i do that with php)?

• Few GUI problems with minimal install

  I installed a minimal Ubuntu with a complete functional GUI, but facing a few problems. nm-applet's icon won't show in the notification area, but I can connect to wired internet fine. I am not able to configure my wireless or VPN this way. gksu's authentication screen is different from the usual graphical authentication - the screen turns gray as usual, but there are more options like save password for this session or keyring. And most importantly, it won't accept my password no matter what. And lastly, Gwibber seems to install no matter what, but there's not a single package in my knowledge that I installed has anything related to Gwibber. I would welcome any help regarding these three issues. I did not mention what packages I installed, because the list is long, but I will do so if anyone requests. Thank you in advance!

  I'm currently runing Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. I want to upgrade to 10.04.02, but whenever I use the Update manager to do this, it fails with the error "An upgrade from 'jaunty' to 'lucid' is not supported with this tool". I also tried to run sudo do-release-upgrade -d, but it fails with the same error message: Checking for a new ubuntu release Done Upgrade tool signature Done Upgrade tool Done downloading extracting 'lucid.tar.gz' authenticate 'lucid.tar.gz' against 'lucid.tar.gz.gpg' tar: Removing leading `/' from member names Reading cache Checking package manager Can not upgrade An upgrade from 'jaunty' to 'lucid' is not supported with this tool.
