• using core data with web services

  Hi. i am a noob in xcode. I am developing an iphone app where i need to send and receive data from a web service. And i need to store them temporarily in my app. i dont want to use sqlite. so i was wondering if i should use core data for this purpose. I read some articles but i still dont have a clear picture of how to do it, coz i have used core data only with sqlite. I want to do the following things : Will receive table data from a web service. Have to perform certain calculations on those fields. Will send the data back in xml format to the server. How do i convert the xml data into int, date or any other data type? and how do i store it in managed data objects? Can anyone please help me with this??? thnx for your time.

• Why can't my main class see the array in my calender class

  This is a homework problem. I'm already 5 days late and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.. this is my 1st semester in Java and my first post on this site Here is the assignment.. Create a class called Calendar. The class should contain a variable called events that is a String array. The array should be created to hold 5 elements. Use a constant value to specify the array size. Do not hard code the array size. Initialize the array in the class constructor so that each element contains the string “ – No event planned – “. The class should contain a method called CreateEvent. This method should accept a String argument that contains a one-word user event and an integer argument that represents the day of the week. Monday should be represented by the number 1 and Friday should be represented by the number 5. Populate the events array with the event info passed into the method. Although the user will input one-word events, each event string should prepend the following string to each event: event_dayAppoinment: (where event_day is the day of the week) For example, if the user enters 1 and “doctor” , the first array element should read: Monday Appointment: doctor If the user enters 2 and “PTA” , the second array element should read: Tuesday Appointment: PTA Write a driver program (in a separate class) that creates and calls your Calendar class. Then use a loop to gather user input. Ask for the day (as an integer) and then ask for the event (as a one word string). Pass the integer and string to the Calendar object’s CreateEvent method. The user should be able enter 0 – 5 events. If the user enters -1, the loop should exit and your application should print out all the events in a tabular format. Your program should not allow the user to enter invalid values for the day of the week. Any input other than 1 – 5 or -1 for the day of the week would be considered invalid. Notes: When obtaining an integer from the user, you will need to use the nextInt() method on your Scanner object. When obtaining a string from a user, you will need to use the next() method on your Scanner object.   Is RDF still used widely for content syndication? Specifically, I know only of Slashdot as a large scale website syndicating content in that format (say versus RSS). Understandably this might seem vague to answer so more specifically: Can anyone list any larger sites similar in scale to Amazon or CNN using it? Any web based publishing platforms (Wordpress, Joomla, etc...) that generate syndication feeds with this xml vocabulary. Any other more quantifiable evidence that it is used for syndication online. I understand that RDF may be a parent specification but in this case I'm talking about sites that syndicate content using <rdf as a root element and heavily leveraging elements from the RDF namespace: http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#

• ICalendar parser in PHP that supports timezones

  I am looking for a PHP class that can parse an ICalendar (ICS) file and correctly handle timezones. I already created an ICS parser myself but it can only handle timezones known to PHP (like 'Europe/Paris'). Unfortunately, ICS file generated by Evolution (default calendar software of Ubuntu) does not use default timezone IDs. It exports events with its a specific timezone ID exporting also the full definition of the timezone: daylight saving dates, recurrence rule and all the hard stuff to understand about timezones. This is too much for me. Since it was only a small utility for my girlfriend, I won't have time to investigate further the ICalendar specification and create a full blown ICalendar parser myself. So is there any known implementation in PHP of ICalendar file format that can parse timezones definitions?

  What is a best practice for storing user messages in a configuration file and then retrieving them for certain events throughout an application? • XSLT: How to escape square brackets in Urls

  I have a set of records from Solr where field[@name='url'] can have the following format: http://url/blabla/blabla.aspx?sv=[keyword%20keyword,%201] My understanding is that the square brackets denote an array syntax and I would like to use XSLT to remove the square brackets from all Urls. The reason for this is that I am using an Open URL resolver, which does not currently handle well those characters. The best option would be to strip the square brackets from all URLs before such resources are mediated by the Open URL resolver. There are cases where I have multiple occurrences of square brackets per Url. Can you please help me with this? Thanks for your help, I.

  Does anyone have an XML style sheet that'll convert wiki-like markup to HTML? Or is that a bad idea? I only found one style sheet that'll convert HTML to wiki-like markup, view-source:http://mozile.mozdev.org/0.8/demos/html2wiki.xsl . Or is this a bad idea? Basically, instead of following strict rules with my XML tags to format my content, I thought it'd be best to have something like this: <content> \## This is my heading </content> That way I'm free to display my content however I feel without having to modify my style sheet. Any ideas?

• Drupal: Multiple Stylesheets

  I'm currently creating a custom Drupal theme for my company and I'm having trouble getting multiple stylesheets to load. I followed the instructions on this page by adding stylesheets to the .info file in the format: stylesheets[all][] = style.css stylesheets[all][] = name2.css etc... However, when I load the page nothing changes and when I view source, it consistently lists style.css but seems to ignore the others. Am I misunderstood in the process of adding additional stylesheets? What could I be doing incorrectly? Thanks for any help!

• OpenCV to use in memory buffers or file pointers

  The two functions in openCV cvLoadImage and cvSaveImage accept file path's as arguments. For example, when saving a image it's cvSaveImage("/tmp/output.jpg", dstIpl) and it writes on the disk. Is there any way to feed this a buffer already in memory? So instead of a disk write, the output image will be in memory. I would also like to know this for both cvSaveImage and cvLoadImage (read and write to memory buffers). Thanks! My goal is to store the Encoded (jpeg) version of the file in Memory. Same goes to cvLoadImage, I want to load a jpeg that's in memory in to the IplImage format.

• pyplot: really slow creating heatmaps

  I have a loop that executes the body about 200 times. In each loop iteration, it does a sophisticated calculation, and then as debugging, I wish to produce a heatmap of a NxM matrix. But, generating this heatmap is unbearably slow and significantly slow downs an already slow algorithm. My code is along the lines: import numpy import matplotlib.pyplot as plt for i in range(200): matrix = complex_calculation() plt.set_cmap("gray") plt.imshow(matrix) plt.savefig("frame{0}.png".format(i)) The matrix, from numpy, is not huge --- 300 x 600 of doubles. Even if I do not save the figure and instead update an on-screen plot, it's even slower. Surely I must be abusing pyplot. (Matlab can do this, no problem.) How do I speed this up?

• A web framework where AJAX was not an after thought

  AJAX is a pain in the ass because it essentially means you'll have to write two sets of similarish code: one for browsers with JavaScript enabled and those without. Not only this, but you have to connect JavaScript events to hook into your models and display the results. And if all that weren't bad enough, you need to send an address change with the request, otherwise the user won't be able to "click back" correctly (if confused look at what happens to the address bar when you click links in GMail). We're searching for something that had the foresight and design goals with all these concerns in mind. Performance and security are also obvious major concerns. We love config-based systems as well, where you don't have to write a lot of code you just drop it into an easily read config format. It's like asking for the holy grail right?

  So i am doing a research on how can i infer knowledge from reports (not with a specific format), but after pre processing, i should have some kind of formatted data. A fairly basic inference would be: "Retailer has X stock." and "X is sellable." - "Retailer sells X" the knowledge i focus is retail domain oriented, and if possible i should improve its efficiency with each iteration. Is this scifi(some of my friends think it is)? The related stuff i find online are "expert systems" that find anomalies, fuzzy inference systems and some rants about "easy knowledge".   My open source Android application has internationalization done the Android way, with strings.xml files. The community has many people from many countries, and they are willing to contribute/improve translations using a collaborative website. There is Launchpad but it only supports the gettext format so we would have to use scripts, not very convenient. There is Crowdin but somehow this website seems dead, nearly no projects, and the download links do not work. Actually we started using Crowdin but all download links fail to give any strings.xml file back, see here. What website is convenient for translating open source Android applications?

  Hi guys, I am currently writing a web application intended for US users that asks them to input their ZIP code and I just found out about the ZIP+4 code. Since I am not from the US and getting a user's correct ZIP code is important, I have no idea which format I should use. Could anyone (preferably from the US) please clarify what's the deal with the +4 digits and how important are they ? Is it safe to use only the plain 5-digit ZIP ? Thank you in advance !

• XSLT good choice for web framework?

  I've always thought of XML (and SGML before that) data as the devil's format. I'm of the old database and flat files school. Nonetheless, we are developing a commercially-available web product who's framework is based off of translating/transforming XML data in chains. As we're interviewing for positions as well talking to potential customers, they love the concept of what it will do but are weary of supporting XSLT long-term. One person even called it the proverbial "dead." Dead like COBOL, Unix, and C or dead like Apple Business BASIC? Anyway, I'm curious if building a web framework on XSLT is really not cutting edge enough (oddly) for companies. Are there inherent XSLT implementation problems that make this venture something worth reconsidering?

• Reading Windows ACLs from Java

  From within a Java program, I want to be able to list out the Windows users and groups who have permission to read a given file. Obviously Java has no built-in ability to read the Windows ACL information out, so I'm looking for other solutions. Are there any third party libraries available which can provide direct access to the ACL information for a Windows file? Failing that, maybe running cacls and capturing and then processing the output would be a reasonable temporary solution - Is the output format of cacls thoroughly documented anywhere, and is it likely to change between versions of Windows?

• MQ EOL Data conversion

  we are sending data trough MQ from a z/OS/CICS system to an AS400. Original encoding of the message is CCSID 500 with a MQSTR Format. The client application is getting the message with the CONVERT option and CCSID 819. Data is almost converted correctly except for the end of line caracter. Any idea? The z/OS is sending 0D (CR) as end of line caracter. If they had 0D+0A (CR+LF), CCSID automatically change from 500 to 437, and the end of line still ain't right on the client side.

  I have plenty of experience with Eclipse, and now I'm trying out Visual Studio 2010. I find its formatting somewhat counter-intuitive. Here are some things I'm trying to figure out: Is there a way to select all text and format/indent it properly, like SHIFT+A SHIFT+I in Eclipse? Why is it that when I type a line like if (n == 0) {, as soon as I type the opening brace, the text cursor is moved to the beginning of the line? Is this some productivity speedup I'm failing to see? When I hit ENTER after the aforementioned line, I'd like the closing brace to be put in place automatically for me. How can I do this? I've looked for hotkey documentation, and it's helped a bit, but this still feels clunky to me.

• Why use MySQL over flatfiles?

  A friend and I were debating about whether he should use MySQL or a flatfile database for his website's backend. I told him to go with MySQL because it was structured, held records well, and was consistent. He on the other hand said that he would rather go for speed. Reading files is a lot quicker than connecting to MySQL and it made me wonder whether he was right. For example, why not just create a folder for each table, like so: users/ groups/ posts/, within the folders have the files named by ID (1, 2, 3) and then for the data use a format like so: username: John\npassword: e2fc714c4727ee9395f324cd2e7f331f\nemail: [email protected]? In other words, what are the advantages of MySQL over flatfiles?

• How can I copy a file from VMS to Windows and back again?

  I am trying to copy C source files from a vms alpha to a windows machine to allow easier editing of the code. (VMS editor is just a text editor and it would be nice to have syntax highlighting etc) I can copy this across using Exceed FTP and this handles the issue of duplicate filenames with version suffix that vms has: File.c;1 File.c;2 Flle.c;3 But when I open a file I've transferred, all the line breaks have been lost and the entire file is just one line. Can anyone recommend a solution to this or offer any hints? Thanks in advance ps. I need to be able to copy the files back to vms and still maintain format.

• Tools and ways to generate HTML help for built-in help system (QtHelp)?

  Hello, I'm in the progress of implementing a built-in help system based on QtHelp into my application. Since QtHelp is based on Qt's help collection files, I need to produce a set of HTML pages. Since I won't be writing the documentation alone (a few of my colleagues will write, too), I am looking for the best way to produce these files. We are internally using a Wiki, and I know that the documentation should be written in some kind of markup language instead of giving all authors a WYSIWYG HTML editor. So my question is, are there tools out there which help with the process of generating documentation that can be exported as a set of HTML files, and possibly, as PDFs, too?. Thanks in advance! Update: I'm already using Doxygen for C++ documentation generation. But I'm not exactly looking for an API-Documentation generator, but something like LaTeX, which allows you to format the documentation contents like a markup document (much like a Wiki).

• SQL: Find difference between dates with grouping

  I have a problem that seems similar to this fellow - I just want to display the data slightly differently. I'm pretty terrible with SQL so can't modify it to suit, but perhaps someone else can. My table looks similar to this (date format is dd/mm/yyyy): ID User Date_start Role 1 Andy 01/04/2010 A 2 Andy 10/04/2010 B 3 Andy 20/04/2010 A 4 John 02/05/2010 A I want to show the total number of days that anyone was in a certain role. Users stay in the role until there is another entry into the table. Users can only be in one role at a time. So the summary data would look like this (assuming that the date is 04/05/2010): A: 26 days B: 10 days Thanks for any help :)

• cleaned_data() doesn't have some of the entered data

  I have a simple form for a user to enter in Name (CharField), Age(IntegerField), and Sex(ChoiceField). However the data that is taken from the Sex choice field is not showing up in my cleaned_data(). Using a debugger, I can clearly see that the data is being received in the correct format but as soon as I do form.cleaned_data() all sign of my choice field data is gone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
