• Help: Best way to do a TV-out in 7300GT Nvidia video card?

  I'm planning to recycle my old PC and build a Media Center using an open-source (C#) software called MediaPortal. My old PC has a GeForce 7300GT with a TV-out plug built-in. When I tested it last night, it wouldn't detect my JVC tv (CRT) using the current drivers. I even purchased a new copper-based TV-Out to RCA cable. I searched all 3 AV channels. The video card has 3 output ports: 2 DVI & 1 s-video. I used the s-video with a S-Video to RCA out cable. I swapped between PAL & NTSC So what I did was I downloaded the first version of an Nvidia driver for 7 series cards, but still even with the old console, it couldn't detect the TV. I'm running out of viable ideas. Anyone here had the same problem and fixed it? Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you!

• Converting videos to AVI with AVIDemux for compatibility

  I am trying to convert a couple of short videos to AVI (XviD) using AVIDemux. I find that while the resulting videos play fine in VLC, they do not play in an XviD DVD player (nor presumably Xbox 360, PS3, etc.). In fact, they do not even show in Windows Explorer (that is, Explorer cannot read their metadata or display thumbnails). I tried using all three of the AVI Muxer Output Format options, but none worked. Does anyone know what settings to use to produce compatible AVIs with AVIDemux? (I found an old thread where someone complained about AVIs not working on Xbox, but that was a few years ago from an older version.)

• cygwin GNU make .net program piping inconsistent behavior

  This question may sound like a superuser question but I feel there is something related to programming. Anyway, my computer had a fresh installation of Win 7 64 and cygwin recently. Now I observed some problem with pipe handling in gnu make file. The following is the Makefile I use to reproduce the issue: all: fsutil | cat my-dotnet-console.exe | cat The problem is: for the first command line, the piping works every time but for the second command line, the piping barely works - I got no result for the second command for most cases, regardless of the environment (cmd or bash) in which the make file is invoked. However, if I copy paste the second command line into cmd (or bash), the pipe works every time. The following is my .net program: static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine(new string('a', 40)); Console.Out.Flush(); } The make version is 3.82.90 but the same problem was observed in a previous version (because of the windows path handling problem in 3.82.9, I replaced make.exe with a previous version). I don't know the exact cygwin version I have installed but the current version on cygwin.com is 1.7.11-1. Currently, my work around is to redirect the output to a temporary file but it would be great if I can avoid the temporary file. Thanks

• With dnsmasq as the DNS server, 'dig' and 'ping' succeed while 'nslookup' fails

  I installed dnsmasq on a machine of mine (It's a Kubuntu 12.04 LTS), backed only by /etc/hosts (no connection to the Internet until later). Now, if I dig mymachine, I get 192.168.0.1, but if I try to nslookup mymachine, I get: >> connection timed out; no servers could be reached Tried also nslookup mymachine.mynicedomain.org - didn't work either. pinging (Edit:) succeeds. This happens both on the server machine itself and on other machines on the network. How can I the DNS lookups to work? What problem is preventing nslookup from succeeding?   How do i restart a shell session from within SSH when it looks something like this: anton@ubuntu:~$ c: command not found anton@ubuntu:~$ lib anton@ubuntu:~$ this is working, but its messed up anton@ubuntu:~$ I can execute commands, but as i input them nothing shows on the console, but as soon as i press enter the command executes and the output comes (without line-endings, as shown above) exec bash bash --login clear nothing really works, restarting the SSH session however works. Temporary solution is to start a screen session and every time the interface freezes you simply do Ctrl+a-c to start a new session and close the old one..

• how do I make my Dualshock 3 gamepad work in Ubuntu 14.04?

  When my desktop computer was running Ubuntu 12.04, my PS3 controllers would work with USB. I didn't need to do any special setup. I could just plug it in before I start SuperTuxKart and it would recognize it. I can also do this on my laptop (still running 12.04). Since I gave my desktop a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04, the controller would never work. I have played with some installed software that I found when looking for information. • Crawling a Content Folio

  Content Folios in WebCenter Content allow you to assemble, track, and access a logical group of documents and/or links.  It allows you to manage them as just a list of items (simple folio) or organized as a hierarchy (advanced folio).  The built-in UI in content server allows you to work with these folios, but publishing them or consuming them externally can be a bit of a challenge.   The folios themselves are actually XML files that contain the structure, attributes, and pointers to the content items.  So to publish this somewhere, such as a Site Studio page, you could perhaps use an XML parser to traverse the structure and create your output.  But XML parsers are not always the easiest or most efficient to use.  In order to more easily crawl and consume a Content Folio, Ed Bryant - Principal Sales Consultant, wrote a component to do just that.  His component adds a service which does all the work for you and returns the folio structure as a simple resultset.  So consuming and publishing that folio on a Site Studio page or in your portal using RIDC is a breeze!  For example, let's take an advanced Content Folio example like this: If we look at the native file, the XML looks like this: But if we access the folio using the new service - http://server/cs/idcplg?IdcService=FOLIO_CRAWL&dDocName=ecm008003&IsPageDebug=1 - this is what the result set looks like (using the IsPageDebug parameter). • sar command to generate only CPU utilization and network statistics in Linux

  I want to be able to generate the system activity report every 30 seconds or every minute and store in a file and use it for diagnostic purposes on my VM. So I give an output file for the sar command and read it using the "-f" option. But I only use the CPU utilization and network utilization part of the report and so rest is all that I don't want to save (waste the space in the disk to store these reports). Also the sar files that are generated are all binary. Is there a way to collect these stats for the CPU and network utilization alone? and so save almost 2/3rds the space on the disk?

• How to rebuild a Li Ion laptop battery?

  I have an aging Gateway NX560XL laptop. The battery is toast and a new one, even aftermarket, starts at $130. So, to experiment, I began tearing apart the old battery to see what can be done. I found it used 8 standard size 18650 Li Ion cells arranged two cells parallel then in series (like: ====). Some online shopping revealed ~$7-13/ea replacements depending on mAh output. My plan is to load test to determine the bad cells and replace only those, as I read that typically only 1 or 2 may be bad. I'm proficient with soldering, however these cells are attached with welded tabs. Some of them broke during disassembly and I'm not sure how to reattach them. What I found online are cells like these that have solder tabs pre-welded to the ends so I can solder wires onto. Is there any guide available that provides the instructions and parts to do this kind of rebuild?

• Exempt programs from using active VPN connection

  When I connect to a VPN, all my network traffic is automatically routed through it. Is there a way to add exemptions to that? I don't know if adding exceptions has anything to do with the VPN protocol, but the VPN I'm using is of the OpenVPN protocol. Speaking of OpenVPN, why is it not installed by default on Ubuntu installs unlike PPTP? I could not get the list of IRCHighWay's servers, and this is the result I get trying to connect on XChat with running the bash script running: * Looking up irc.irchighway.net * Connecting to irc.irchighway.net (65.23.153.98) port 6667... * Connected. • How do I delete a route in OS X 10.5

  I somehow configured my Mac to route all requests for a particular IP Name (sample.com) to the loopback address (127.0.0.1). Now I'm trying to remove this, but can't determine where to do it. There is no entry for it under /etc/hosts. The routing table shows that it is mapping the IP Name to the IP address of the Mac. • Strange Inode/Ram cache drops happening in CentOS

  I run a CentOS 5.7 machine (64bit) with 24GB ram and 4x SAS drives in RAID10 setup. This machine runs nginx/1.0.10, php-fpm & xcache. About a month back the RAM usage of this machine has changed. About every few hours the 'CACHE' is flushed from the RAM, this happens exactly when the 'Inode table usage' drops. I'm pretty sure these drops are related. (see the 2 attached images). This server hosts quite a lot of small files (20M all a few KB big). Not many files are deleted (maybe 100 per hour (total size a few MB max)), not enough to account for the huge Inode table drops. I also have no crons running which could cause these drops. Sar -r output: http://pastebin.com/C4D0B79i My question: Why are these huge RAM/Inode usage drops happening? How can I get Nginx/PHP to use all of my servers RAM?

• DB API for shell scripting (any shell)

  I am faced with some legacy shell scripts that run batch data processing jobs in Oracle using SQL+. For the most part, the data tier does not have to communicate back to the script with retrieved data to be passed for shell-level processing but in a few cases it does. The problem is, SQL+ is really meant to be an end user app and not an API that can communicate with other clients programmaticaly. That is why people have invented APIs such as DBD::DBI for Perl, JDBC for Java, ODBC etc. The way it is done is they invoke SQL+ and then parse the output, which is clearly designed for human eye consumption, using tools like sed and awk. The whole thing is at best a hack and very prone to bugs. Since this client is rather conservative with their technology, they don't want to scale their scripts up to Perl or Python where there are data access APIs. So I am wondering whether there are similar APIs for shell, e.g. K or bash. What I would like is if an API would return data in a 2-dimensional array or strings (for the lack of type setting) so that I can just read DB data like that. The way they do it now is akin to parsing regular web page HTML to get a single stock quote rather than cleanly calling a web service and be done with it. Anybody know of a product I can use? Thanks

• Permission problem - users can't access main index.php anymore

  From /var/www, I executed "chmod -R 774 ." and now none of my .php scripts are accessible. From my browser, when I type in mydomain.com or mydomain.com/test2.php or mydomain.com/test.php, I get the 403 Forbidden error msg. So, I changed the permissions of 3 of the .php scripts to 775, but this didn't help either. • Would Using a PHP Framework Be Beneficial in My Context?

  I've just started work at a small start-up company who mainly uses PHP to develop their front-end apps. I had no prior PHP experience before joining, and this has led to my apps becoming large pieces of spaghetti code. I essentially started by adding code to implement an initial feature, and then continued to hack in more code to implement further features – without much thought for the overall design. The apps themselves output XML to render on small mobile devices. I recently started looking into frameworks that I could use. I reckon an advantage would be that they seem to force developers to modularise their programs using good-practice design patterns. This seems great for someone in my position. The extra functions they provide, for example: interfacing with databases in such a way as to make SQL injection impossible, would be very useful too. The downside I can see is that there will be a lot of overhead for me in terms of the time taken to learn the framework itself (while still getting to grips with PHP itself). I'm also worried that it will be overkill for the scale of the apps we develop. They tend to be programs that interface with a fairly simple back-end DB, and will generate about 5 different XML screens. Probably around 1 or 2 thousand lines of code. The time it takes just to configure the frameworks may not be worth it. The final problem I can see is that developers in the company – who have to go over my code, and who do not know the PHP framework I may use – will have a much harder time understanding it. Given those pros and cons, I'm still not sure on what the best course of action will be; so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

• Finding throuput of CPU and Hardrive on Solaris

  How do i find the throughput of a CPU and the Hardisk on an open solaris machine. Using MPstat or iostat. I'm having a hard time identifying the throughput if it is given at all in the commands output. Eg. in mpstat there is very little explanation as to what the columns mean http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-5166/mpstat-1m?l=en&a=view&q=syscl+mpstat I've been using the syscl column divided by time interval to find the throughput but to be honest i have no idea what a system call truelly is. • Run batch on files in a relative folder

  I have a windows batch script that runs a SOX command on various files, but I don't know how to get the batch to run on files in a relative path to that of the SOX executable. Currently all the files are in the root and it outputs to /combined. The Batch Script: cd %~dp0 mkdir combined FOR %%A IN (*.mp3) DO sox static.mp3 %%A "combined/%%~nxA" pause I want the script to run the sox command on files in the directory "audiotracks" and output it to the directory "combined". To give you an idea, this would be the desired folder structure: /root sox.exe batch.bat static.mp3 /audiotracks audio1.mp3 audio2.mp3 audio3.mp3 audio4.mp3 /combined audio1out.mp3 audio2out.mp3 audio3out.mp3 audio4out.mp3 Is this possible, or is there a better method of doing this?   Hi I have been trying to send commands to a running gnu screen session (4.00.03) in opensolaris, but cannot get it to run any commands through any combination of screen -X Ok, I start a screen session with screen -S test, and then tried to with screen -r -X "date"to just show me the date, when I would reconnect to it. But neither an error message nor output in the screen happened. I tried with so many combinations, that I can't even remember. Any hints on how to accomplish it? The reason why I am doing this is, because I have a program, which does not come as a daemon, and I wish to start it in a screen session, so I can later on see what is going on.
