• Make it simple. Make it work.

  In 2010 I had an experience to work for a business that had lots of challenges. One of those challenges was luck of technical architecture and business value recognition which translated in spending enormous amount of manpower and money on creating C++ solutions for desktop client w/o using .NET to minimize “footprint” (2#) of the client application in deployment environments. This was an awkward experience, considering that C++ custom code was created from scratch to make clients talk to .NET backend while simple having .NET as a dependency would cut time to market by at least 50% (and I’m downplaying the estimate). Regardless, recent Microsoft announcement about .NET vNext has reminded me that experience and how short sighted architecture at that company was. Investment made into making C++ client that cannot be maintained internally by team due to it’s specialization in .NET have created a situation where code to maintain will be more brutal over the time and  number of developers understanding it will be going and shrinking. Not only that. The ability to go cross-platform (#3) and performance achievement gained with native compilation (#1) would be an immediate pay back. Why am I saying all this? To make a simple point to myself and remind again – when working on a product that needs to get to the market, make it simple, make it work, and then see how technology is changing and how you can adopt. Simplicity will not let you down. But a complex solution will always do.

• What needs to be done to port a Windows Flash game to Android?

  My team has developed a game using Flash (with Lua embeded) that targets Windows. And we want to port that game to Android (also iOS in the future). It's acceptable to rewrite the Flash part of client. And some other team in our company recommended Unity3D to replace the Flash part. Since we have no experience in Android/iOS development, we would need to learn some new tool/language anyway. So we would like that learning still be useful after the porting and when we starting a new game. Any thoughts? Edits: I think it is worth noticing the background of the game : the project is started by a tester and developer, both without knowing much about flex and actionscript. They built the game while learning, so most of the code is hard to maintain. I and other two developers joined the project after a year or so when one has leave (and the other be our manager). The other two developers are just graduates with little experience and little knowledge of flex. I am good at the server part and the c# language. Based on the fact that the code is hard to maintain (and we do need to change a lot of code to make the game easier to playe in a mobile device), and I am good at c# (and learning). I still tend to do the porting with Unity, which could get better performance and possibly save time.

• Document-oriented vs Column-oriented database fit

  I have a data-intensive application that desperately needs a database make-over. The general data model: There are records with RIDs, grouped together by group IDs (GID). The records have arbitrary data fields, (maybe 5-15) with a few of them mandatory and the rest optional, and thus sparse. The general use model: There are LOTS and LOTS of Writes. Millions to Billions of records are stored. Very often, they are associated with new GIDs, but sometimes, they are associated with existing GIDs. There aren't as many reads, but when they happen, they need to be pretty fast or at least constant speed regardless of the database size. And when the reads happen, it will need to retrieve all the records/RIDs with a certain GID. I don't have a need to search by the record field values. Primarily, I will need to query by the GID and maybe RID. What database implementation should I use? I did some initial research between document-oriented and column-oriented databases and it seems the document-oriented ones are a good fit, model-wise. I could store all the records together under the same document key using the GID. But I don't really have any use for their ability to search the document contents itself. I like the simplicity and scalability of column-oriented databases like Cassandra, but how should I model my data in this paradigm for optimal performance? Should my key be the GID and should I create a column for each record/RID? (there maybe thousands or hundreds of thousands of records in a group/GID). Or should my key be the RID and ensure each row has a column for the GID value? What results in faster writes and reads under this model?

• Receiving an MVP Award and Credibility

  The post titled, The Problem with MVPs, by Steve Barbour was interesting because it makes you think about the thousands of MVPs around the world and what their value really is. Having been the recipient of multiple MVP awards, it’s an opportunity to reflect and judge my own performance. This is not a dangerous thing to do, but quite the opposite. If a person believes in self improvement, then critical analysis is an important part of that process. A lot of MVPs will tell you that they would be doing the same thing, regardless of whether they were an MVP or not; helping others in the community, which is also where I prefer to hang my hat. I’ve never defined myself as an expert and never will; this determination is left to others. In fact, let me just come out and say it, “I don’t know everything”. Shocked? Sometimes the gap between expectations and reality extends beyond a reasonable measure. Being labeled as a technical expert feels good for one's self esteem and is certainly a useful motivational technique. A problem can emerge though when an individual believes, too much, in what they are told. The problem is not with a pat on the back, but with a person does with the positive reinforcement. Is narcissism too strong a word? How often have you been in a public forum reading a demeaning response to a question that only serves in attempt to raise the stature of the person providing the response? Such behavior compromises one’s credibility, raises questions about validity of the MVP award, and is limited in community value. I’m currently under consideration for another MVP award on April 1st. If it happens, it will be good. Otherwise, I’ll keep writing articles, coding open source software, and whatever else I enjoy doing; with the best reward being that people find value in what I do. • TechEd 2012: Office, SharePoint And More Office

  I haven’t spent any time looking at Office 365 up to this point.  I met Donovan Follette on the flight down from Chicago.  I also got to spend some time discussing the product offerings with him at the TechExpo and that sealed my decision to attend this session. The main actor of his presentation is the BCS – Business Connectivity Services. He explained that while this feature has existed in on-site SharePoint it is a valuable new addition to Office 365 SharePoint Online.  If you aren’t familiar with the BCS, it allows you to leverage non-SharePoint enterprise data source from SharePoint.  The greatest benefactor is the end users who can leverage the data using a variety of Office products and more.  The one thing I haven’t shaken my skepticism of is the use of SharePoint Designer which Donovan used to create a WCF service.  It is mostly my tendency to try to create solutions that can be managed through the whole application life cycle.  It the past migrating through test environments has been near impossible with anything other than content created by SharePiont Designer. There is a lot of end user power here.  The biggest consideration I think you need to examine when reaching from you enterprise LOB data stores out to an online service and back is that you are going to take a performance hit.  This means that you have to be very aware of how you configure these integrated self serve solutions.  As a rule make sure you are using the right tool for the right situation.   I sadly could not make it to EclipseCon last year. It was sad for so many reasons, not the least being that Sweden during that part of the year is cold and dark. ;) This year, however, I will be contributing two talks: ---> HotRockit – What to Expect from Oracle’s Converged JVM Oracle is converging the HotSpot and JRockit JVMs to produce a "best of breed JVM". Internally the project is sometimes referred to as the HotRockit project. There is already a large influx of ideas and solutions provided by the JRockit JVM into the Open JDK. Examples of improvements include: Better monitoring and profiling Improved performance Better ergonomics This talk will discuss what to expect from the converged JVM over the next two years, and how this will benefit the Eclipse community. • Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, now available for download

  Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available for general download for almost a week now.  The Beta of SP1 came couple of months back and it did a lot of performance enhancements, added support for HTML5 tags and few other stuff related to web development.  Now, the final release of SP1 is available.  The good part is that, if you had installed the SP1 beta, you don’t have to remove the Beta and start all over again.  You can apply the final release on top of the Beta and it works like a charm. So, in simplified terms, what is new in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Before I start listing it down, I was checking if there was an MSDN article available on this and found http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg442059.aspx  While it reads (Beta), the same holds good for the release candidate as well.  Unlike VS 2008 SP1 and .NET 3.5 SP1 (which came together), this release doesn’t add any new project templates/item templates. However, there are lot of enhancements related to Web Deployment, Debugging and Unit Testing for .NET 3.5 applications. So, how does one find if you are running the correct version of SP1 final release. • Inheritance versus Composition in a business application

  I have a training management and tracking system, with a high level structure as follows: We have a Role1, e.g. Manager, Shift-boss, miner, etc. and a Candidate, training for that Role. The role has a list of courses and their subjects the candidate needs to complete to qualify for the role. Candidate has a TrainingHistory attribute, containing the courses and subjects they have completed, their results, and the date completed. Now I see it as a TrainingHistoryCourse is-a Course, extended to add DateCompleted etc. but something is nagging at me to rather use something like a TrainingHistoryRecord that has-a Course. How can I further analyse this to determine which pattern to use? Then, a Role has a list of RoleTask definitions that the Candidate must be observed practising, and a Candidate has a history of RoleTaskObservation objects recording their performance at these tasks. This is very similar to the course/subject requirement and history pattern for the candidate, except for one less hierarchical level, but, a RoleTaskObservation clearly does not have an is-a relationship with RoleTask, unless I block my nose and rather use ObservedRoleTask. I would prefer to use the same pattern for both subject/course and task/observation structures, but I think that would force me to adopt a composition pattern for TrainingHistoryCourse. What is the wisdom here? Always inherit where possible and validated by a solid is-a association, or always favour composition wherever possible? 1 Client specified this to be called JobTitle, but he isn't writing the app, and a JobTitle is only one attribute of a Role. Authorization roles are handled by the DevExpress framework and its customization hooks, so there would be very little little confusion between a business Role in my domain objects and an authorization role in lower level, framework code.

• Lucene and .NET Part I

  I’ve playing around with Lucene.NET and trying to get a feeling of what was required to develop and implement a full business application using it. As you would imagine, many things are required for you to implement a robust solution for indexing content and searching it afterwards. Lucene is a great and robust solution for indexing content. It offers fast and performance enhanced search engine library available in Java and .NET. You will want to use this library in many particular scenarios: In Windows Azure, to support Full Text Search (a functionality not currently supported by SQL Azure) When storing files outside or not managed by your database (like in large document storage solutions that uses File System) When Full Text Search is not really what you need Lucene is more than a Full Text Search solution. It has several analyzers that let you process and search content in different ways (decomposing sentences, deriving words, removing articles, etc.). When deciding to implement indexing using Lucene, you will need to take into account the following: How content is to be indexed by Lucene and when. Using a service that runs after a specific interval Immediately when content changes When content is to available for searching / Availability of indexed content (as in real time content search) Immediately when content changes = near real time searching After a few minutes.. Ease of maintainability and development Some Technical Concerns.. When indexing content, indexes are locked for writing operations by the Index Writer. This means that Lucene is best designed to index content using single writer approach. When searching, Index Readers take a snapshot of indexes. This has the following implications: Setting up an index reader is a costly task. Your are not supposed to create one for each query or search. A good practice is to create readers and reuse them for several searches. The latter means that even when the content gets updated, you wont be able to see the changes. You will need to recycle the reader. In the second part of this post we will review some alternatives and design considerations.

• Fibonacci numbers in F#

  As you may have gathered from some of my previous posts, I've been spending some quality time at Project Euler.  Normally I do my solutions in C#, but since I have also started learning F#, it only made sense to switch over to F# to get my math coding fix. This week's post is just a small snippet - spefically, a simple function to return a fibonacci number given it's place in the sequence.  One popular example uses recursion: let rec fib n = if n < 2 then 1 else fib (n-2) + fib(n-1) While this is certainly elegant, the recursion is absolutely brutal on performance.  So I decided to spend a little time, and find an option that achieved the same functionality, but used a recursive function.  And since this is F#, I wanted to make sure I did it without the use of any mutable variables. Here's the solution I came up with: let rec fib n1 n2 c =    if c = 1 then        n2    else        fib n2 (n1+n2) (c-1);;let GetFib num =    (fib 1 1 num);;printfn "%A" (GetFib 1000);; Essentially, this function works through the sequence moving forward, passing the two most recent numbers and a counter to the recursive calls until it has achieved the desired number of iterations.  At that point, it returns the latest fibonacci number. Enjoy!
