  • Ubuntu: Move fsbackup backups to Amazon S3

    I have a legacy server (Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic x86), where previous admin set up backups with fsbackup. This server lives in a VPS (under some kind of Xen), and it is low on HDD space (16 GB total). Now it came to a point, where fsbackup backups take more space than the rest of data in the system. The filesystem is 100% filled, and I already cleaned up all that I could, aside from actual backups. I do not have any experience managing fsbackup, and I do not want to break or lose the backups. Googling fsbackup gives surprisingly low quality results...   • How to read ebooks in continuous scrolling mode and save highlights?

    I'm looking for a way to manage my academic workflow for reading e-books in .epub or .mobi formats on OSX. My requirements: - continuous scrolling mode - ability to highlight text (e.g. in yellow, using a single keyboard shortcut) - ideally, the ability to make annotations as well Amazon Kindle reader for OSX offers annotating, but not continuous scrolling mode. Calibre offers continuous scrolling mode, but does not allow highlighting or annotating. Is there a solution that will allow me to do this? I'm also open to workarounds, e.g. using Calibre to convert to HTML, then reading the book in a browser---but I would still need the ability to highlight using a single keystroke.

  • Custom control doesn't fire validation

    I've written a custom ASP.net control that descends from LinkButton and overrides the Render() method. I'm using it to replace ImageButtons in the site I'm working on so we don't have to have an image for each button. This control works fine, does the required post-backs etc., however it doesn't fire the validators in its validation group. This is obviously an issue.   • Use launchctl to fire an AppleScript script periodically

    I have written an AppleScript that lets me back up a particular file. The script runs fine inside AppleScript Editor: it does what it's supposed to do perfectly. So far so good. Now I'd like to run this script at timed intervals. So I use launchctl & .plist to make this happen.   • Amazon EC2 SQL Server Connection

    I have two instances running on Amazon AWS EC2. One is running MSSQL Server 2005, the other is running a web application. I CAN connect to the database in my app using a connection string that references the Public IP of my EC2 instance running SQL Server. I CANNOT connect from the web app server if I change the connection string to reference the database servers Private IP Address. But I can connect if I run that same code on the database server itself. I can remote desktop from the app server to the database server using the private IP. I have a feeling there is something in my SQL Sever configuration that is preventing this remote connection. I have remote connections enabled, I have it set to listen on all IP addresses. Any ideas? Other things I've done: - Added exceptions to Windows Firewall - Tried connecting to using EC2 DNS Names

  • Unable to connect to Amazon EC2 without using PPK file

    I have a build job which runs on Hudson and synchronizes content from an Amazon AWS server. This is written in shell I have a PPK file given to me which can establish the connectivity Here is the problem. The build script I use doesn't establish the connectivity in the code. So, I manually connect the host thro the PPK file using Putty and then run the job, then it works fine I am new to the shell stuff. Could someone help me out by suggesting how I can establish connectivity using the PPK file in the shell so I do not have to do it manually thro Putty? Thanks, Krishna

  • Upgrading Fedora on Amazon to 12 but getting libssl.so.* & libcrypto.so.* are missing

    I am upgrading to Fedora 12 on a Amazon EC2 using help here: http://www.ioncannon.net/system-administration/894/fedora-12-bootable-root-ebs-on-ec2/ I managed to do a 64 bit instance OK, however facing some problems with a standard one. On the final bit of the install from 11 to 12 I am getting an error: Error: Missing Dependency: libcrypto.so.8 is needed by package httpd-tools-2.2.1.5-1.fc11.1.i586 (installed) Error: Missing Dependency: libssl.so.8 is needed by package httpd-tools-2.2.1.5-1.fc11.1.i586 (installed) This is referenced in the comments from the link above but all it says is: Q: Apache failed, or libssl.so.* & libcrypto.so.* are missing A: These versions are mssing the symlinks they require. Easy fix, go symlink them to the newest versions in /lib However I am afraid I don't know how to do this. If it is any help I tried running the command locate libssl.so and got: /lib/libssl.so.0.9.8b /lib/libssl.so.6

  • Lost sudo/su on Amazon EC2 instance

    I have an Amazon EC2 instance. I can login just fine, but neither "su" nor "sudo" work now (they worked fine previously): "su" requests a password, but I login using ssh keys, and I don't think the root user even has a password. "sudo <anything>" does this: sudo: /etc/sudoers is owned by uid 222, should be 0 sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting I probably did "chown ec2-user /etc/sudoers" (or, more likely "chown -R ec2-user /etc" because I was sick of rsync failing), so this is my fault. How do I recover? I stopped the instance and tried the "View/Change User Data" option on the AWS EC2 console, but this didn't help. EDIT: I realize I could kill this instance and create a new one, but was hoping to avoid something that extreme.

  • Weird DNS bug - external server resolves to internal IP

    I have a server that is hosted by my university. I have root access, but no control over network setup, firewall, etc. This server's DNS resolves to an internal IP here on campus (10.x.x.x), and an external IP outside campus. I also have a few servers hosted at Amazon, and they mostly work well. However, one of them started to resolve the university server by its internal IP address. This causes problems, as 10.x.x.x on Amazon EC2 is someone else. I have connected to the Amazon server with SSH agent forwarding a few times in the past, to access a Git repository on the university server. Any idea what could cause this?   • Can't get basic web servers working on EC2 RedHat

    I'm trying to get some basic Python web servers (Flask, Tornado) turned up on the EC2. On the Amazon-flavored Linux AMI (Amazon Linux AMI 2013.03.1) they work no problem, but the same web servers installed on the RedHat quicklaunch AMI (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4) don't work at all- All I get is connection failure errors when I try to browse to them. Both these servers share the same security group, with the relevant ports (5000, 5010) open, so I'm trying to understand why RedHat would not be not working.

    Summary. I have a fresh EC2 Precise 64-bit instance (ami-82fa58eb). After launching the instance, I want to install ruby1.9.1 (among others).     I have setup a web server on Amazon with 3 Virtual hosts. For some reason I can't get any of the sites going on it, they all show a 404 error. /var/log/apache2/error.log shows "File does not exist: /etc/apache2/htdocs" I have checked: a2ensite all my virtual hosts actually checked softlinks in sites-enabled access rights in /var/www to 777, in case user is not www-data grep -r htdocs /etc/apache2 (returns nothing) ports.conf has NameVirtualHost directive exactly matching Virtual Hosts What else could this be? ports.conf # If you just change the port or add more ports here, you will likely also # have to change the VirtualHost statement in # /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default # This is also true if you have upgraded from before 2.2.9-3 (i.e. from # Debian etch).     Hi, I run a few Rightscale CentOS AMI based instances on Amazon EC2. Two months back I found that our SSHD security is compromised( I had added host.allow and host.deny for ssh). So I created new instances and done an IP based ssh that allows only our IPs through AWS Firewall(ec2-authorize) and chnaged the ssh 22 default port to some other port but two days back I found I was not able to login to the server and when I tried on 22 port the ssh got connected and I found that sshd_conf was changed and when I tried to edit sshd_config I found root had no write permission on the file. So I tried a chmod and it said access denied for 'root' user. This is very strange. I checked secure log and history and found nothing informative. I have PHP, Ruby On Rails, Java, Wordpress apps running on these server. This time I did a chkrootkit scan and found nothing. I renamed the /etc/ssh folder and reinstalled openssh through yum. I had faced this on 3 instances on CentOS(5.2, 5.4) I have instances on Debian as well those working fine. Is this a CentOS/Rightscale issue. Guys, what security measures I should take to prevent this. Please support me this is very critical. Thanks

I want to extend it so that a similar Outbound Message is also sent when the objects are deleted. According to this discussion, Workflow Rules cannot be made to fire based on object deletions, so I have to write an Apex Trigger instead. So the question is, how do I kick off a SOAP Outbound Message from within Apex?
