  Hi, let's assume I have a table of Products with columns: Id, Name, Price and using NHibernate (or ActiveRecord) I map the table to the POCO: public class Product { public virtual long Id { get; set; } public virtual string Name { get; set; } public virtual double Price { get; set; } } Now if someday a new column named ShipmentPrice (let's assume it's double too) will be added to the Products table, is there any way I can automatically know that. For saying automatically I mean adding code to do that or getting an exception? (I assume I don't have control on the columns of the table or a way to know of any changes to the table's schema in advance)

• Linux ext3 readdir and concurrent updates

  Dear all, we are receiving about 10000 messages per hour. We store them as individual files in hourly directories on an ext3 filesystem. The file name includes a sequence number. We use rsync to mirror these files every 20 seconds at another location (via a SAN, but that doesn't matter). Sometimes an rsync run picks up files n-3, n-2, n-1, n+1, and then next rsync run continues with n, n+2, n+3, n+4 and so on. Is it possible that when one process creates files in a certain sequence within a directory, that another process using readdir() sees the files appearing in a different sequence? • Automatic multi-page multi-column flowing text with QtWebkit (HTML/CSS/JS -> PDF)

  I have some HTML documents that are converted to PDF, using software that renders using QtWebkit (not sure which version). Currently, the documents have specific tags to split into columns and pages - so whenever the wording changes, it is a manual time-consuming process to move these tags so that the columns and pages fit. Can anyone provide a way to have text auto-wrapped into the next column/page (as appropriate) when it reaches the bottom of the current container? Any HTML, CSS or JS supported by QtWebkit is ok (assuming it works in the PDF converter). (I have tested the webkit-column-* in CSS3 and it appears QtWebkit does not support this.) To make things more exciting, it also needs to: - put a header at the top of each page, with page X of Y numbering; - if an odd number of pages, add a blank page at the end (with no header); - have the ability to say "don't break inside this block" or "don't break after this header" I have put some quick example initial markup and target markup to help explain what I'm trying to do. (The actual documents are far more complicated than that, but I need a simple proof-of-concept before I attack the real ones.) Any suggestions? Update: I've got a partially working solution using Aaron's "filling up" suggestion - I'll post more details in a bit.

• MS Word Macro - Numeric field insertion with automatic calculation at end of page

  Hi, I am trying to duplicate a feature that exists in Multimate (Ashton Tate) word processor. Yes, the one that hasnt been supported for 20 years! If I can duplicate this one feature I can get all the users off MM and onto Word. The thing that MM does really easily is that there is a function key that they can press at any time that will - - jump the cursor from the paragraph they are writing over to the right hand side - create a numeric field - allow them to enter a number into the numeric field - return them to the left hand side to start a new paragraph What MM also does is automatically total the numeric fields on each page and create a subtotal in the page footer. it also creates a total for the entire document and puts this in the footer of the last page. I would like to duplicate this feature in word with a macro, but have no idea where to start. Any suggestions or code would be great, thanks, will.

• Trying to build automatic audio-conferencing capability into a WebApp

  Hey all, I'm working with a team of relatively novice programmers, and we are trying to create a site that will have audio-conferencing capabilities such that whenever someone visits the page, they will immediately have audio-conferencing capabilities with everyone else on the page (5 people max). Can anyone point us in a general direction? Should we be looking into building a custom app, leveraging audio conferencing software, or trying to mimic a webex program? Would Adobe Stratus be useful in getting this kind of functionality? Does anyone have any ideas about how we would design something like this on a macro level? • Phantom updates due to decimal precision on calculated properties

  This article describes my problem. I have several properties that are calculated. These are typed as decimal(9,2) in SQL Server and decimal in my C# classes. An example of the problem is: Object is loaded with a property value of 14.9 A calculation is performed and the property value is changed to 14.90393 When the session is flushed, NHibernate issues an update because the property is dirty Since the database field is decimal (9,2) the stored value doesn't change Basically a phantom update is issued every time this object is loaded. I don't want to truncate the calculations in my business objects because that tightly couples them to the database and I don't want to lose the precision in other calculations. I tried setting scale and precision or CustomType("Decimal(9,2)") in the mapping file but this appears to only affect schema generation. My only reasonable option appears to be creating an IUserType implementation to handle this. Is there a better solution?

• MVVM pattern: ViewModel updates after Model server roundtrip

  I have stateless services and anemic domain objects on server side. Model between server and client is POCO DTO. The client should become MVVM. The model could be graph of about 100 instances of 20 different classes. The client editor contains diverse tab-pages all of them live-connected to model/viewmodel. My problem is how to propagate changes after server round-trip nice way. It's quite easy to propagate changes from ViewModel to DTO. For way back it would be possible to throw away old DTO and replace it whole with new one, but it will cause lot of redrawing for lists/DataTemplates. I could gather the server side changes and transmit them to client side. But the names of fields changed would be domain/DTO specific, not ViewModel specific. And the mapping seems nontrivial to me. If I should do it imperative way after round-trip, it would break SOC/modularity of viewModels. I'm thinking about some kind of mapping rule engine, something like automappper or emit mapper. But it solves just very plain use-cases. I don't see how it would map/propagate/convert adding items to list or removal. How to identify instances in collections so it could merge values to existing instances. As well it should propagate validation/error info. Maybe I should implement INotifyPropertyChanged on DTO and try to replay server side events on it ? And then bind ViewModel to it ? Would binding solve the problems with collection merges nice way ? Is EventAgregator from PRISM useful for that ? Is there any event record-replay component ? Is there better client side pattern for architecture with server side logic ?

My question is do I use the original image I downloaded and apply the daily distro updates through Update manager OR do a download a new image (because it now has the distro updates included). To be clear I am asking does the 12.04 Beta 2 ISO get updated on a daily basis?

  The default behavior of a UITabBarController is to pop the contained UINavigationController to the root view controller when a particular tab is tapped a second time. I have a particular use case where I'm wanting this to not work automatically, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to prevent this. Has anyone run into this, and if so, what did you do? Do I need to subclass UINavigationController and override popToRootViewController or is there a simpler way?

Finally, I have a website utilizing ASP to display the blog entries. The website connects directly to the backend database using an OLEDB connection object. What I'd like is if I could start a comment, and have the editor automatically insert a line break and continue the comment to the nest line when I reach, say, 80 characters long. In the source code of web page, the links look like href="#", so i think these links works with Javascript. Runscript doesn't work with a Javascript code like "link.click". When i use a "link.flash()" i can see the link flash so i'm sure the script click on the links but there is not effect ( and the script doens't crash ) .   Having just upgraded to a newer version of HtmlUnit (2.4), I've noticed certain tests are failing when comparing the output of asText. Looking into the differences, this is because dates (present on the page in the format 11/06/2010 00:00z) are being altered in the output to read 2010-06-11. Has anybody else encountered this, and can anybody advise how to turn off this (seemingly undocumented) feature of asText, which seems to go completely against the advised documentation.

  Hi there, I have just joined a team working on an existing Java web app. I have been tasked with creating an automated integration test suite that should run when developers commit to our continuous integration server (TeamCity), which automatically deploys to our staging server - so really the tests will be run against our staging web app server. I have read a lot of stuff about automated integration testing with frameworks like Watir, Selenium and RWebSpec. I have created tests in all of these and while I prefer Watir, I am open to anything. The thing that hasn't become clear to me is how to create an entire test suite for an application, and how to have that suite execute in it's entirety upon execution of some script. I can happily create individual tests of varying complexity, but there is a gap in my knowledge about how to tie everything together into something useful. Does anyone have any advice on how to create a full test suite and have it execute automatically? Thanks!

• Automatic tracking algorithm

  Hi everyone, I'm trying to write a simple tracking routine to track some points on a movie. Essentially I have a series of 100-frames-long movies, showing some bright spots on dark background. I have ~100-150 spots per frame, and they move over the course of the movie. I would like to track them, so I'm looking for some efficient (but possibly not overkilling to implement) routine to do that. A few more infos: the spots are a few (es. 5x5) pixels in size the movement are not big. A spot generally does not move more than 5-10 pixels from its original position. The movements are generally smooth. the "shape" of these spots is generally fixed, they don't grow or shrink BUT they become less bright as the movie progresses. the spots don't move in a particular direction. They can move right and then left and then right again the user will select a region around each spot and then this region will be tracked, so I do not need to automatically find the points. As the videos are b/w, I though I should rely on brigthness. For instance I thought I could move around the region and calculate the correlation of the region's area in the previous frame with that in the various positions in the next frame. I understand that this is a quite naïve solution, but do you think it may work? Does anyone know specific algorithms that do this? It doesn't need to be superfast, as long as it is accurate I'm happy. Thank you nico

• Automatic annotation for matlab plot?

  Hi I have quite a few points plotted in a figure. I am now using annotation() function to add annotation in the same way for these points based on their locations. See my previous question. However they tend to mess up where the points are close to each other. Is there some function available to position the annotations as apart as possible? Thanks and regards!
