• How long does a MacBook Pro battery last on a single charge?

  On the official apple website it says that all Macbook pro batteries last for 7 hours, and 8 hours on the 17" macbook pro. However when I called my local apple retailer and asked him, he said the battery has a 'stand by' time of 7 hours, but if I were doing something like using an IDE to program and not watching videos, etc it could last upto 5-6 hours. When I asked him about why the official site says 7 hours, he said yes but he didn't want to lie to me, and actually the battery only lasts 5-6 hours. Does anyone who owns a macbook pro shed any light on this, such as how long the battery will actually last? I'll be buying a 15" macbook pro.

  I'm making OpenGL game for Android. Till now i've used only fixed function pipeline, but i'm rendering simple things. Fixed function pipeline includes a lot of stuff i don't need. So i'm thinking about implementing shaders in my game to simplify OpenGL pipeline if it can make better performance. Better performance = better battery life, unless fps is limited by software limit, not hardware power.

  I have a Lighttpd server (on Centos) and would like to display 4 graphs: lighttpd traffic, lighttpd requests per second, CPU usage and MEM usage. • Redmine error undefined local variable 'usage' when recieving email

  I posted this on the Redmine forum about 20 days ago but am having no luck finding an answer, so I thought I'd see if I can find some love here: Somewhere during an upgrade to RM I lost the ability to have RM receive email. It was running just beautifully on 8.5. Some while back I upgraded and was not using the receive email feature for some time. At 9.2 and, now, 0.9.3.stable.3625, I'm getting an error in the procmail.log file: undefined local variable or method `usage' for #<RedmineMailHandler:0x6c14d34bb0a0> (NameError) I have a SVN install and used it, just tonight, to update the the 9.3 stable version. I walked through all the upgrade steps and everything seems to work fine, except for this. In rdm-redminehandler.rb I commented out the offending 'usage' line and got another error: 422 Unprocessable Entity

• Normal memory usage in Rails

  I'm wondering how much memory usage is normal for a ruby process in a rails application? I really need something to benchmark against. In my dev environment WEBrick a single ruby process uses about 61mb to handle 10 simultaneous requests going non stop. In my prod environment Apache2+Passenger starts 7 ruby processes to handle the same ammount of requests. Each of those processes also use up about 60mb. Is this normal? Also, where do I configure how many ruby processes Passenger can start? Or will it start as many as there is memory available for? Thank you! ps. Using Rails3 beta. ds.

  Hello Experts, Scenario : I am working on LOB application, as in silverlight every call to service is Async so automatically UI is not blocked when the request is processed at server side. Silverlight also supports threading as per my understanding if you are developing LOB application threads are most useful when you need to do some IO operation but as i am not using OOB application it is not possible to access client resource and for all server request it is by default Async. In above scenario is there any usage of Threading or can anyone provide some good example where by using threading we can improve performance. I have tried to search a lot on this topic but everywhere i have identified some simple threading example from which it is very difficult to understand the real benefit. Thanks for help

• VS2008 EF and non crud SP usage.

  Using an edmx version of EF. My returned data is a join between tables that has a COMPOUND filter on the primary table. In essence this query is going to return a SEGMENT of Law codes and descriptions that a user can tie to a Sex Offender report. I have a complex SP because Linq2SQL cannot pass in a between statement, or at least that is how I understand the error. The Code itself is broken up by '-' marks. 39-13-504 "Aggravated Sexual Battery" User wants to have a query with 4 parmas 39, 13, 500, 599. Get all codes from Title 39 and Chapter 13 with parts between 500 and 599. I have the SP in place to do the work, is there are way to consume the SP within the EF? I find many blogs about SPs with CRUD operations as their use of an SP. That doesn't fit this need at all. I do not have a single table but a join to the "prior selections" table that maps the key for the code. Any pointers on how to get a READ with an SP? TIA

• Perl graph garbage collection usage

  Hi, I have built a tiny application in Perl that displays a graph over time. It graphs garbage collection usage over time. I use gnuplot to display the actual graph. This works fine if the time period is short, like a few hours. However, as the time increases (say a few days), the graph becomes difficult to read as the information gets crammed. Note that there is a tool called gcviewer which performs a similar function, it works by allowing you to choose the percentage of the graph. http://www.tagtraum.com/gcviewer.html Ideally I would like to take this further by adding the ability to "move" within the graph. I am not a developer but am good at scripting, so if there is some module in Perl which would provide this functionality it would be excellent! I know very little about copyright law, including how it applies in these situations, and I can never find usage and licensing terms for these. Nor did googling any terms I could think of provide me the specific answer I need. does anyone know for sure what the rules/laws are here, or where I can find the answer?

Because if I delete it, the code that call this method cannot use the IQueryable (perhaps because of deferred execution?). How to force immediate execution to this method? • Troubleshooting source of heavy resource-usage on a server 2008 running multiple sites

  Hi, I am running about 10 asp.net websites on a hosted virtual server. The server runs Server 2008 - each website is backed by its own database running on SQL server 2008 on the same box. Lately the box has seemed really slow. The only kind of discovery i could think of doing was looking in the task manager, where i can see w3wp and sqlserver.exe jumping to 40% cpu usage every 5-10 seconds. What are the steps i can take to determine which of my websites is taking these resources and or what database is getting hit the most? I have of course ssms installed on the machine as well. As you can tell, my sysadmin skills are very very limited - any help would be much appreciated.

• Proper usage (best practices) of Browsable attribute in .NET for runtime grid component behavior

  I understand how Browsable attribute is supposed to work. It's supposed to hide a property from showing up in a PropertyGrid in design time. It also has another effect in that it will stop a Property from showing up in components such as Grids, or specifically Infragistics WinGrid. I am not sure if it has this behaviour on regular Windows Forms grids. This works, but it doesn't sound like Browsable is being use as intended when being used for 'Run time' displaying of a property on a grid component. Any literature from Microsoft on proper use. Even though it works, I don't want to use this attribute to hide columns on a grid bound to a business object if it's not indeed the correct usage of the attribute, but rather something some grid vendors decided to use to determine property visibility on their grids.

• Bitmapdata heavy usage - memory disaster (spark/FB4)

  I've got a flex component which works pretty well but unfortunately turns into a disaster once used in a datagroup item renderer of about 40-50 items. Essentially it uses bitmapdata to take screenshot of a fully-rendered webpage in mx:HTML (this version of webkit rocks btw, miles better than flex 3).   Is there a way to find out how much memory is being used by a web page, or by my jquery application? Here's my situation: I'm building a data heavy webapp using a jquery frontend and a restful backend that serves data in JSON. The page is loaded once, and then everything happens via ajax. The UI provides users with a way to create multiple tabs within the UI, and each tab can contain lots and lots of data. I'm considering limiting the number of tabs they can create, but was thinking it would be nice to only limit them once memory usage has gone above a certain threshold.

[n] = ............ n arrays will each have a 2 element array, where each element has an array of n values. I used $list[$m][0][$n] and $list[$m][1][$n] inside 2 for loops where $m,$n vary from 0...2000 this crosses the allowed memory size.. i can change the size in php.ini, but i want to optimize my memory usage and not change the limit. will using objects help ? Please provide some sample code to understand. Thank you.

  Hi, After I have created a serious bunch of classes (with initialize methods), I am loading these into IRb to test each of them. I do so by creating simple instances and calling their methods to learn their behavior. However sometimes I don't remember exactly what order I was supposed to give the arguments when I call the .new method on the class. It requires me to look back at the code. However, I think it should be easy enough to return a usage message, instead of seeing: ArgumentError: wrong number of arguments (0 for 9) So I prefer to return a string with the human readable arguments, by example using "puts" or just a return of a string. Now I have seen the rescue keyword inside begin-end code, but I wonder how I could catch the ArgumentError when the initialize method is called. Thank you for your answers, feedback and comments!

  Hi all: As what seems to be some sort of penance for sins in a prior life, I have been tasked with maintaining some SSIS packages. (NO! NO BADMOUTHING SSIS!! BAD PROGRAMMMER! NO DOUGHNUT!). Anyhoo, I many of the packages have variables, defined in an outer container, which are used in multiple inner containers, in script tasks. What I want to do, is find out all the places in a package a variable being used; in other words, search for instances of variable usage in all tasks of a package. This would be a huge help, but I cannot for the life of me find out how this can be done in BIDS. (this is SSIS/BIDS 2008) Thanks for any help, YS

• openCV usage cvFindDominantPoints

  Hi, Does anyone know how to use the cvFindDominantPoints API of openCV? I basically have a 1 channel, binary image from which I get a set of contours. Judging from the image, I seem to be getting the correct contours. Now, I am selecting one of these contours to get dominant points of. This contour has about 60 vertices. However, the API call to cvFindDominantPoints is giving me a sequence of points (about 15) that does not even lie on the contour. It is quite far from it. Any insight? my usage: CvSeq *dominantpoints = cvFindDominantPoints(targetSeq, tristorage, CV_DOMINANT_IPAN, 7, 9, 9, 150);

• How to gather usage statistics for iPhone app?

  I am in the process of releasing my first iPhone app. It's a simple utility, I'd just like to gauge the release process, app lifetime and trends, just so it can help make more realistic choices in future apps. I think it would be nice to have usage statistics in addition to download stats from Apple. For example, how many times is the app opened by each user, what iPhone OS version do they have, etc. I think some of it would simply be to try and connect to a known URL on one of my domains, passing it anonymous information (let's say, connect to http://mydomain.net/stats?app=myApp&version=1.0.0&os=3.1.2&used=18). My questions are: is that forbidden in any way by Apple's rules? (none that I could find, at least) does that seem reasonable to you? are there existing frameworks that would do that simpler/better that writing my own code?
