  • Can I use the newer versions of Visual Studio to do "old" things?

    I have several ATL/COM-based DLLs that I've been using Visual C++ 6.0 on. I require a couple of "old" things out of the generated DLLs: (1) They must be compatible with projects developed in Visual Basic 6.0 (the old VB6, emphatically not VB.Net). (2) They must be compatible with old operating systems - minimum Windows 98 SE. To be clear, I mean they must run on such OSes, not that I would have to be able to develop them on a machine running such an OS. I am sick of Visual Studio 6.0. Converting to Dot Net (or any other major change like that) is out of the question at the current time, so I must continue to use VB6. But can I switch to the newer Visual Studio's C++, with a minimum of effort (i.e. little if any required recoding)? If so, are there any "gotchas" I should watch out for? Thanks.

  • How to use MSBuild to target multiple versions of .NET Framework?

    I am improving the builds for an open source project which currently supports .NET Framework v2.0, v3.5, and now v4.0. Up until now, I've restricted myself to v2.0 to ensure compatibility, but with VS2010 I am interested in having real targeted builds. I'm looking for some guidance on how to edit the MSBuild csproj/soln to be able to cleanly produce builds for each target. I'm willing to have complexity in the csproj and in a batch file to control the build. My goal is to be able to have a command line script that could produce the builds without needing Visual Studio installed, but only the necessary .NET Framework(s). Ideally, I'd like to minimize dependencies on additional software (e.g. NAnt). I'm pretty sure this can be done but am having trouble finding a definitive guide on setting it up and best practices. Bonus: my next step after getting this set up will be to better support Mono Framework. Any help on doing this same thing for Mono would be much appreciated.

  • Is there a way to automaticly call all versions of an inherited method?

    I'm writing a plug-in for a 3D modeling program. I have a custom class that wraps instances of elements in the 3D model, and in turn derives it's properties from the element it wraps. When the element in the model changes I want my class(es) to update their properties based on the new geometry. In the simplified example below. I have classes AbsCurveBasd, Extrusion, and Shell which are all derived from one another. Each of these classes implement a RefreshFromBaseShape() method which updates specific properties based on the current baseShape the class is wrapping. I can call base.RefreshFromBaseShape() in each implementation of RefreshFromBaseShape() to ensure that all the properties are updated. But I'm wondering if there is a better way where I don't have to remember to do this in every implementation of RefershFromBaseShape()?   • How do I list Clearcase versions without the Fully-qualified verison?

    In Clearcase: I'm trying to find the names of all files in the current view without a specific label. So far I've come up with the following: cleartool find -cview -all -version '\!lbtype(LABEL_1)' -print But this ends up displaying the filenames with the "@@/main/BRANCH1/SUBBRANCH" appended to the end, and I really want just the filename. I've tried adding a -short, but the find command doesn't like that option, and I can't find an option in the manuals to change the behavior.

  • What versions/flavors of WinZip can be opened by the gnu.java.util.zip.dll v.6.0.140.8?

    Evaluating a third party data processing tool, I have bumped into a case where some WinZip files cause an exception: Caused by: gnu.java.util.zip.ZipException: Unknown compression method 98 at gnu.java.util.zip.ZipFile.getInputStream(ZipFile.java:470) I have seen this with files created with WinZip 11.2 and newer. What's the latest version of WinZip (or compatible compression method) that the zip.dll can handle? I've been hunting for some reference on this, but other than unversioned source code, I have had little luck so far.

  • Rails plugin for generating dynamic / ajax crud interfaces compatible with Rails 3 beta?

    Anyone know of some good gems or plugins to create dynamic / ajax crud interfaces for Rails 3 projects? I know active scaffold was popular before and it's been awhile since I have used it / any other gems similar to this (I usually just write it myself). I like the direction that the formtastic gem (http://github.com/justinfrench/formtastic) is headed and wonder what else people are combining with it. Also I like the generators approach that Ryan Bates uses and he appears to be making updates for Rails 3. Anything else I am missing here? (I am also open to gems not compatible with Rails 3 too I guess, I can always make a contribution and try to help them get to the next phase. ;)) PS - Really stackoverflow, only one hyperlink?? lame.

  • Moving from NHibernate to FluentNHibernate: assembly error (related to versions)?

    Not sure where to start, but I had gotten the most recent version of NHibernate, successfully mapped the most simple of business objects, etc. When trying to move to FluentNHibernate and do the same thing, I got this error message on build: "System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'NHibernate, Version=2.1.0.4000, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=aa95f207798dfdb4' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference." Background: I'm new to Hibernate, NHibernate, and FluentNHibernate -- but not to .NET, C#, etc. Database I have a database table called Category: (PK) CategoryID (type: int), unique, auto-incrementing UserID (type: uniqueidentifier) -- given the value of the user Guid in ASP.NET database Title (type: varchar(50) -- the title of the category Components involved: I have a SessionProviderClass which creates the mapping to the database I have a Category class which has all the virtual methods for FluentNHibernate to override I have a CategoryMap : ClassMap class, which does the fluent mappings for the entity I have a CategoryRepository class that contains the method to add & save the category I have the TestCatAdd.aspx file which uses the CategoryRepository class. Would be happy to post code for any of those, but I'm not sure that it's necessary, as I think the issue is that somewhere there's a version conflict between what FluentNHibernate references and the NHibernate I have installed from before.   • Search Engine Query Word Order

    I've pages with titles like 'Alpha with Beta'. For every such page, there is an inverse page 'Beta with Alpha'. Both pages link to each other. When someone on Google searches for 'Beta with Alpha', I'd like them to land on the correct page, but sometimes 'Alpha with Beta' ranks higher (or vice versa). I was thinking of inspecting the referral link when a visitor arrives on my site, and silently redirecting them to the correct page based on what they actually searched for. Just wondering if this could be penalized by Google as 'cloaking/sneaky redirects'? Or is there a better way to ensure that the correct page on my site ranks higher for the matching query?

  • What are the primary advantages of Visual Studio Team Foundation Server over the other versions?

    We are looking into the possibility of upgrading to Team Foundation Server 2008 for our development team. One of our primary reasons is some of the deployment capabilities surrounding BizTalk 2009, but I am curious what other benefits there are for other projects outside of BizTalk. Some of our interests so far are moving to a one click build and deploy process, the addition of unit tests, and continuous integration. Some definite steps forward for the company I work for. What other benefits or information should I look at as I pitch this to upper management? I am looking for technical reasons, money is a not really a concern for this discussion.

    How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence, the more detailed re-statement of the question is appropriate: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using?   • (Windows Installer) What are some causes for different versions of a program showing 2 entries in ad

    Somehow we ended up with something going wrong with one of our recently deployed upgrades (internal deploy, only about a dozen machines or so) and there are now 2 entries for our program showing up in windows add/remove program and I'm trying to figure out what could have caused this. In a nutshell what does windows use to determine whether a program is replacing a previous version or if it's a new program? We are using WiX to create our installers, but nothing in the SVN revisions shows much out of the ordinary (been working fine for the past year with over 100 upgrades). Product version is * because we're forcing a major upgrade each time, but the upgrade code has never changed.
