  • How difficult it is to develope Apps for Android and iOS? [on hold]

    - by netsetter
I'm an experienced web developer in PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySQL, CSS and I'm running communities where people can register to be able to login and do some stuff. Now more and more people are requestion an App, I told them that I have no time and experience to develope Apps with many functions for such complex communities I am running, but then the users told me what would be enough for them and this sounds already simpler to me: An app to install on Android / iOS just to be able to login (+ autologin), so they appear always online in the community when they have internet connection. Then only 1 function like a counter of new activities regarding their user account (new messages, new replies, etc..), and if they click on the app then a browser window will open to read the info at the main website. So, what you think, it will be a big thing to develope such an app for the members? Is there a big diffrence between developing for Android and iOS? How to test the App if you don't have an Android or iOS phone in example?

I'm totally confused on where to start with.I like to create big games but after starting i feel the game is too heavy to handle. Can any one list out the basic needs of a Game Play programmer? I don't mind using any platform (Flash,c++,objective-c) but i need to know what are the game logic's i need to know before i start a big game.

  • WCF RIA Services - Hands On Lab

At the keynote for the Silverlight 4 Launch alongside Scott Guthrie I demonstrated (minute 28 to minute 38) how to build a Silverlight 4 application using WCF RIA Services and the new Visual Studio 2010 tooling. The application I built is an online book store to rival the big boys OK, well, maybe not the big boys but you get the idea. As promised I am elaborating on the presentation and breaking down the steps to create the application here. I included the starter solution and the completed...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

The last year for sure was very busy with projects and I’m glad I made it again and able to contribute to the ASP.NET community. It is really a big surprise to me! Wohooo!! =) I am looking forward to contribute more in the community. BIG thanks to Microsoft, my MVP Lead Lilian Quek, family, friends, readers, and everyone who has supported me!!!

  • Unit testing a text index

    - by jplot
Consider a text index such as a suffix tree or a suffix array supporting Count queries (number of occurrences of a pattern) and Locate queries (the positions of all the occurrences of a pattern) over a given text. How would you go about unit testing such a class ? What I have in mind is to generate a big random string then extract a random substring from this big string and compare the results of both queries with naive implementations (such as string::find). Another idea I have is to find the most frequent substring of length l appearing in the original string (using perhaps a naive method) and use these substrings for testing the index. This isn't the best way, so what would be a good design of the unit tests for a text index ? In case it matters, this is in C++ using google test.

  • Azure, a Beautiful Color, and So Much More...

    - by KKline
Windows and SQL Azure Resources Cloud computing is more than just the latest buzz word in the IT trade papers. It is a remarkable paradigm shift with as much potential to "turn over the apple cart" of IT computing as client-server had for the world of mainframe and minicomputers. If you're not spending time to learn about cloud computing, in general, and SQL Azure, in particular, then you're missing the boat in a big way. (Ha! Two big metaphors in one afternoon. • Display large amount of data to client through pagination

    - by ebram tharwat
I have a web application in which i need to show a big number of data or records for clients. Now i 'll use pagination but i was wondering should I: Load all the data once then pagination, sorting and sarching 'll be easy..But it 'll takes big time(using local DB it takes up to 9 sec.) Or each time i show new page(from the pagination) i make a new request to server and then new request to DB to get the next records..But then what if the client click on Prev button, i 'll make a new request to get data that I had previously..Should i cach data that are loaded before and how if that's good technique? So load all data once or make a new request every time i need data that maybe have been loaded before. I'm using ASP.NET MVC SPA with durandaljs and knockoutjs

  • Monitor screen size and programming ease

    - by rrazd
I recently heard that a big part in successful/quick debugging and easing the process of programming is to use a big screen. I may be purchasing a new computer in the future and this has me wondering: 1)Is the aforementioned statement actually true or is it a bit of a stretch? 2)Have you noticed that this plays a significant enough part to buy a bigger screen if the bigger screen is significantly more expensive? 3)Is it common for developers to work on 13'' laptop screen as their main (and only) workstation (this is what I currently develop on) or is this actually disadvantageous? This may be subjective but any professional opinions/experiences would be greatly appreciated!

  • Runtime error in C code (strange double conversion)

    - by Miro Hassan
    I have a strange runtime error in my C code. The Integers comparison here works fine. But in the Decimals comparison, I always get that the second number is larger than the first number, which is false. I am pretty new to C and programming in general, so this is a complex application to me. #include <stdio.h> #include <stdbool.h> #include <stdlib.h> int choose; long long neLimit = -1000000000; long long limit = 1000000000; bool big(a,b) { if ((a >= limit) || (b >= limit)) return true; else if ((a <= neLimit) || (b <= neLimit)) return true; return false; } void largerr(a,b) { if (a > b) printf("\nThe First Number is larger ..\n"); else if (a < b) printf("\nThe Second Number is larger ..\n"); else printf("\nThe Two Numbers are Equal .. \n"); } int main() { system("color e && title Numbers Comparison && echo off && cls"); start:{ printf("Choose a Type of Comparison :\n\t1. Integers\n\t2. Decimals \n\t\t I Choose Number : "); scanf("%i", &choose); switch(choose) { case 1: goto Integers; break; case 2: goto Decimals; break; default: system("echo Please Choose a Valid Option && pause>nul && cls"); goto start; } } Integers: { system("title Integers Comparison && cls"); long x , y; printf("\nFirst Number : \t"); scanf("%li", &x); printf("\nSecond Number : "); scanf("%li", &y); if (big(x,y)) { printf("\nOut of Limit .. Too Big Numbers ..\n"); system("pause>nul && cls") ; goto Integers; } largerr(x,y); printf("\nFirst Number : %li\nSecond Number : %li\n",x,y); goto exif; } Decimals: { system("title Decimals Comparison && cls"); double x , y; printf("\nFirst Number : \t"); scanf("%le", &x); printf("\nSecond Number : "); scanf("%le", &y); if (big(x,y)) { printf("\nOut of Limit ..   • How do I batch-downsize images on linux, while keeping small images small?

    - by Gabriel
I have a whole lot of photos and it's time to clean up the mess and free some disk space. I know mogrify is great to batch-resize things down. The problem is, in some directories I have small images mixed with the big ones. I'd like to batch-downsize all the big one but not upsize the small ones. As an example, I have a rep with tens of MBs-pictures in the 3000x2000s. Some of them I have already downsized so I could email them. They may be 1024x768. I'd like to downsize the big ones to 1600x1200, a disk-space-to-quality tradeoff I like. But then, with mogrify or convert, the small ones will be upsized, which would be a waste of disk space. I found some tricky ways to use identify with cut and some scripting to filter the small pics out and mogrify the others, but man, there's got a way to tell mogrify not to upsize my pics... How ? Is there some other tool better suited ?
