  • How to learn proper C++?

    - by Chris
    While reading a long series of really, really interesting threads, I've come to a realization: I don't think I really know C++. I know C, I know classes, I know inheritance, I know templates (& the STL) and I know exceptions. Not C++. To clarify, I've been writing "C++" for more than 5 years now. I know C, and I know that C and C++ share a common subset. What I've begun to realize, though, is that more times than not, I wind up treating C++ something vaguely like "C with classes," although I do practice RAII. I've never used Boost, and have only read up on TR1 and C++0x - I haven't used any of these features in practice. I don't use namespaces. I see a list of #defines, and I think - "Gracious, that's horrible! Very un-C++-like," only to go and mindlessly write class wrappers for the sake of it, and I wind up with large numbers (maybe a few per class) of static methods, and for some reason, that just doesn't seem right lately. The professional in me yells "just get the job done," the academic yells "you should write proper C++ when writing C++" and I feel like the point of balance is somewhere in between. I'd like to note that I don't want to program "pure" C++ just for the sake of it. I know several languages. I have a good feel for what "Pythonic" is. I know what clean and clear PHP is. Good C code I can read and write better than English. The issue is that I learned C by example, and picked up C++ as a "series of modifications" to C. And a lot of my early C++ work was creating class wrappers for C libraries. I feel like my own personal C-heavy background while learning C++ has sort of... clouded my acceptance of C++ in it's own right, as it's own language. Do the weathered C++ lags here have any advice for me? Good examples of clean, sharp C++ to learn from? What habits of C does my inner-C++ really need to break from? My goal here is not to go forth and trumpet "good" C++ paradigm from rooftops for the sake of it. C and C++ are two different languages, and I want to start treating them that way. How? Where to start? Thanks in advance! Cheers, -Chris

  • Which network protocol to use for lightweight notification of remote apps?

    - by Chris Thornton
    I have this situation.... Client-initiated SOAP 1.1 communication between one server and let's say, tens of thousands of clients. Clients are external, coming in through our firewall, authenticated by certificate, https, etc.. They can be anywhere, and usually have their own firewalls, NAT routers, etc... They're truely external, not just remote corporate offices. They could be in a corporate/campus network, DSL/Cable, even Dialup. Client uses Delphi (2005 + SOAP fixes from 2007), and the server is C#, but from an architecture/design standpoint, that shouldn't matter. Currently, clients push new data to the server and pull new data from the server on 15-minute polling loop. The server currently does not push data - the client hits the "messagecount" method, to see if there is new data to pull. If 0, it sleeps for another 15 min and checks again. We're trying to get that down to 7 seconds. If this were an internal app, with one or just a few dozen clients, we'd write a cilent "listener" soap service, and would push data to it. But since they're external, sit behind their own firewalls, and sometimes private networks behind NAT routers, this is not practical. So we're left with polling on a much quicker loop. 10K clients, each checking their messagecount every 10 seconds, is going to be 1000/sec messages that will mostly just waste bandwidth, server, firewall, and authenticator resources. So I'm trying to design something better than what would amount to a self-inflicted DoS attack. I don't think it's practical to have the server send soap messages to the client (push) as this would require too much configuration at the client end. But I think there are alternatives that I don't know about. Such as: 1) Is there a way for the client to make a request for GetMessageCount() via Soap 1.1, and get the response, and then perhaps, "stay on the line" for perhaps 5-10 minutes to get additional responses in case new data arrives? i.e the server says "0", then a minute later in response to some SQL trigger (the server is C# on Sql Server, btw), knows that this client is still "on the line" and sends the updated message count of "5"? 2) Is there some other protocol that we could use to "ping" the client, using information gathered from their last GetMessageCount() request? 3) I don't even know. I guess I'm looking for some magic protocol where the client can send a GetMessageCount() request, which would include info for "oh by the way, in case the answer changes in the next hour, ping me at this address...". Also, I'm assuming that any of these "keep the line open" schemes would seriously impact the server sizing, as it would need to keep many thousands of connections open, simultaneously. That would likely impact the firewalls too, I think. Is there anything out there like that? Or am I pretty much stuck with polling? TIA, Chris

  • How to get data from another page (different servers)

    - by rjovic
    I want to make a IE8 web slice who will show remaining amount of students "food credit". In our country we have web page where we can see ammount www.cap.srce.hr/ProvjeraSaldo.aspx. When I fill textbox with my card number i recieve remaining amount. Now, i want to speed that process with ie8 web slice. So is it possible to get data from another webserver page and than display it in my web slice on my web server. I tried to use XMLHTTP request but it can be only used on same domains. Url for getting amount is : http://www.cap.srce.hr/saldo.aspx?brk={number_of_card}

  • Jetty servlet respons to Ajax always empty

    - by chris
    Hi I try to run a java server on Jetty which should respond to an ajax call. Unfortunately the response seems to be empty when I call it with ajax. When I call http://localhost:8081/?id=something I get an answer. The Java Server: public class Answer extends AbstractHandler { public void handle(String target, Request baseRequest, HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws IOException, ServletException { String id = request.getParameter("id"); response.setContentType("text/xml"); response.setHeader("Cache-Control", "no-cache"); response.setContentLength(19+id.length()); response.setStatus(HttpServletResponse.SC_OK); response.getWriter().write("<message>"+id+"</message>"); //response.setContentType("text/html;charset=utf-8"); response.flushBuffer(); baseRequest.setHandled(true); } public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { Server server = new Server(8081); server.setHandler(new Answer()); server.start(); server.join(); } } The js and html: <html> <head> <script> var req; function validate() { var idField = document.getElementById("userid"); var url = "validate?id=" + encodeURIComponent(idField.value); if (typeof XMLHttpRequest != "undefined") { req = new XMLHttpRequest(); } else if (window.ActiveXObject) { req = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } req.open("GET", "http://localhost:8081?id=fd", true); req.onreadystatechange = callback; req.send(null); } function callback() { if (req.readyState == 4) { if (req.status == 200) { var message = req.responseXML.getElementsByTagName("message")[0]; document.getElementById("userid").innerHTML = "message.childNodes[0].nodeValue"; } } } </script> </head> <body onload="validate('foobar')"> <div id="userid">hannak</div> </body> </html> I'm actually don't know what I'm doing wrong here. Maybe someone has a good idea. greetings chris

  • iPhone animation with stretchable image

    - by ryyst
    I got a UIView subclass that draws a UIImage as its background. The image is created using the stretchableImageWithLeftCapWidth:topCapHeight: method, it has round edges. I also use an animation block inside of which I resize my view. I had hoped that during animation, the drawRect:method would get called sometimes, which would result in the background image getting drawn correctly. Unfortunately, the animation seems to render the image and then just rescale it during the animation, which obviously makes the formerly round edges getting nastily stretched. The only workaround I can imagine is put three separate UIImageViews (top cap, middle fill, bottom cap) above my original background image and then reposition the caps images and scaling the fill image. However, this seems quite complicated... Is there any better way I can prevent this from happening?

  • 2010 April Fools Joke

    - by Dane Morgridge
    I started at my current job at the end of March last year and there were some pretty funny April fools jokes.  Nothing super crazy, but pretty funny.  One guy came in and there was a tree in his cube.  We (me and the rest of my team) were planning for a couple of weeks on what we could do that would be just awesome.  We had a lot of really good ideas but nothing was spectacular.  Then Steve Andrews had a brilliant idea (yes it's true).  Since we have internal DNS servers we could redirect DNS to our internal servers for a site such as cnn.com.  Then we would lift the code from the site and create our own home page that would contain news about people in the company.  Steve was actually laughing so hard when he thought of the idea that it took him almost 30 minutes to spit it out. I thought, "this is perfect". I had enlisted a couple of people to help come up with the stories and at the same time we were trying to figure out how to get everybody to the site the morning of the 1st.  Then it hit me.  We could have the main article be one of my getting picked up by the FBI on hacking charges.  Then Chris (my boss) could send an email out telling everyone that I would not be there today and direct them to the site.  That would for sure get everyone to go to cnn.com first thing and see our prank.  I begun the process of looking for photos I could crop myself into and found the perfect one.  Then my wife took a good pic with our Canon 40D and I went to work.  The night before I didn't have any other stories due to everyone being really busy at work, but I decided to go ahead with just the FBI bust on it's own.  I got everything working and tested and coordinated with Chris for me to come in late so no one would see me at the office until after everyone had seen the joke. And so the morning of April fools came and I was waiting at home and the email was perfect.  Chris told everyone that I wouldn't be in and that not to answer any questions if you got any calls from anybody.  The Photoshop job I did was not perfect, but good enough and I even wrote an article with it that went into more detail about how I had been classified as a terrorist and all kinds of stuff. People at work started getting the emails and a few people didn't realize it was a joke (as I had hoped), including some from senior management (one person in particular who shall remain nameless in this post).  Emails started flying around about how to contain the situation and how to handle bad PR.  He basically bought it hook, line and sinker and then went in to crisis mode.  It was awesome! He did finally realize it was a joke and I will likely print and frame the email he sent out.  In short, April fools this year was a huge success.

  • Shell script to emulate warnings-as-errors?

    - by talkaboutquality
    Some compilers let you set warnings as errors, so that you'll never leave any compiler warnings behind, because if you do, the code won't build. This is a Good Thing. Unfortunately, some compilers don't have a flag for warnings-as-errors. I need to write a shell script or wrapper that provides the feature. Presumably it parses the compilation console output and returns failure if there were any compiler warnings (or errors), and success otherwise. "Failure" also means (I think) that object code should not be produced. What's the shortest, simplest UNIX/Linux shell script you can write that meets the explicit requirements above, as well as the following implicit requirements of otherwise behaving just like the compiler: - accepts all flags, options, arguments - supports redirection of stdout and stderr - produces object code and links as directed Key words: elegant, meets all requirements. Extra credit: easy to incorporate into a GNU make file. Thanks for your help. === Clues === This solution to a different problem, using shell functions (?), Append text to stderr redirects in bash, might figure in. Wonder how to invite litb's friend "who knows bash quite well" to address my question? === Answer status === Thanks to Charlie Martin for the short answer, but that, unfortunately, is what I started out with. A while back I used that, released it for office use, and, within a few hours, had its most severe drawback pointed out to me: it will PASS a compilation with no warnings, but only errors. That's really bad because then we're delivering object code that the compiler is sure won't work. The simple solution also doesn't meet the other requirements listed. Thanks to Adam Rosenfield for the shorthand, and Chris Dodd for introducing pipefail to the solution. Chris' answer looks closest, because I think the pipefail should ensure that if compilation actually fails on error, that we'll get failure as we should. Chris, does pipefail work in all shells? And have any ideas on the rest of the implicit requirements listed above?

  • Protected and Private methods

    - by cabaret
    I'm reading through Beginning Ruby and I'm stuck at the part about private and protected methods. This is a newbie question, I know. I searched through SO for a bit but I couldn't manage to find a clear and newbie-friendly explanation of the difference between private and protected methods. The book gives two examples, the first one for private methods: class Person def initialize(name) set_name(name) end def name @first_name + ' ' + @last_name end private def set_name(name) first_name, last_name = name.split(/\s+/) set_first_name(first_name) set_last_name(last_name) end def set_first_name(name) @first_name = name end def set_last_name(name) @last_name = name end end In this case, if I try p = Person.new("Fred Bloggs") p.set_last_name("Smith") It will tell me that I can't use the set_last_name method, because it's private. All good till there. However, in the other example, they define an age method as protected and when I do fred = Person.new(34) chris = Person.new(25) puts chris.age_difference_with(fred) puts chris.age It gives an error: :20: protected method 'age' called for #<Person:0x1e5f28 @age=25> (NoMethodError) I honestly fail to see the difference between the private and protected methods, it sounds the same to me. Could someone provide me with a clear explanation so I'll never get confused about this again? I'll provide the code for the second example if necessary.

  • Missing a constant on load.. how can i get around this? (Rails::Plugin::OpenID)

    - by Chris Kimpton
    I have a Rails 2 project that I am trying to upgrade to Rails 3, but getting some issues with bundler. When I run "rake", it runs the tests just fine. But when I run "bundle exec rake" it fails to find a constant. The error is this: /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:131:in `const_missing': uninitialized constant Rails::Plugin::OpenID (NameError) from /Users/kimptoc/Documents/ruby/borisbikes/borisbikestats.pre3/vendor/plugins/open_id_authentication/init.rb:16:in `evaluate_init_rb' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:182:in `call' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:182:in `evaluate_method' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:166:in `call' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:90:in `run' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:90:in `each' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:90:in `send' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:90:in `run' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/activesupport-2.3.9/lib/active_support/callbacks.rb:276:in `run_callbacks' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/actionpack-2.3.9/lib/action_controller/dispatcher.rb:51:in `send' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/actionpack-2.3.9/lib/action_controller/dispatcher.rb:51:in `run_prepare_callbacks' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/rails-2.3.9/lib/initializer.rb:631:in `prepare_dispatcher' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/rails-2.3.9/lib/initializer.rb:185:in `process' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/rails-2.3.9/lib/initializer.rb:113:in `send' from /Users/kimptoc/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p330@p-borisbikestats-pre-rails3/gems/rails-2.3.9/lib/initializer.rb:113:in `run' from /Users/kimptoc/Documents/ruby/borisbikes/borisbikestats.pre3/config/environment.rb:9 from ./test/test_helper.rb:2:in `require' from ./test/test_helper.rb:2 I have these gems installed: $ gem list *** LOCAL GEMS *** actionmailer (2.3.9) actionpack (2.3.9) activerecord (2.3.9) activeresource (2.3.9) activesupport (2.3.9) authlogic (2.1.3) bundler (1.0.7) gravtastic (2.2.0) linecache (0.43) mocha (0.9.10) newrelic_rpm (2.13.4) parseexcel (0.5.2) rack (1.1.0) rack-openid (1.1.1) rails (2.3.9) rake (0.8.7) ruby-debug-base (0.10.5.jb2, 0.10.4) ruby-debug-ide (0.4.15) ruby-openid (2.1.8, 2.1.7, 2.0.4) sqlite3-ruby (1.3.2) The bundler Gemfile is as follows: source 'http://rubygems.org' #gem 'rails', '3.0.3' gem "rails", "2.3.9" gem "activesupport", "2.3.9" gem "ruby-openid", "2.1.7", :require => "openid" #gem "authlogic-oid", "1.0.4" # Bundle edge Rails instead: # gem 'rails', :git => 'git://github.com/rails/rails.git' gem 'sqlite3-ruby', :require => 'sqlite3' gem "authlogic", "= 2.1.3" gem "newrelic_rpm" # gem "facebooker" gem "parseexcel" gem 'gravtastic', '= 2.2.0' gem "rack-openid", '=1.1.1', :require => 'rack/openid' # not sure what this does... gem "mocha" I have these plugins installed: 2dc_jqgrid authlogic_openid open_id_authentication squirrel I see these similar questions: Missing a constant on load.. how can i get around this? and Requiring gem in Rails 3 Controller failing with "Constant Missing" But their solutions dont seem to work for my situation. • populate uipicker view with results from core data DB using an NSArray

    - by Chris
    I am trying to populate a UIPickerView with the results of a NSFetchRequest. The results of the NSFetchRequest are then stored in an NSArray. I am using Core Data to interact with the SQLite DB. I have a simple class file that contains a UIPickerView that is associated with a storyboard scene in my project. The header file for the class looks like the following, ViewControllerUsers.h #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import "AppDelegate.h" @interface ViewControllerUsers : UIViewController <NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate, UIPickerViewDelegate, UIPickerViewDataSource> { NSArray *dictionaries; } @property (nonatomic, strong) NSFetchedResultsController *fetchedResultsController; // Core Data @property (strong, nonatomic) NSManagedObjectContext *managedObjectContext; @property (nonatomic, strong) NSArray *users; @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UIPickerView *uiPickerViewUsers; @property (weak, nonatomic) IBOutlet UIBarButtonItem *btnDone; @property (weak, nonatomic) IBOutlet UIButton *btnChangePin; // added for testing purposes @property (nonatomic, strong) NSArray *usernames; - (IBAction)dismissScene:(id)sender; - (IBAction)changePin:(id)sender; @end The implementation file looks like the following, ViewControllerUsers.m #import "ViewControllerUsers.h" @interface ViewControllerUsers () @end @implementation ViewControllerUsers // Core Data @synthesize managedObjectContext = _managedObjectContext; @synthesize uiPickerViewUsers = _uiPickerViewUsers; @synthesize usernames = _usernames; - (id)initWithNibName:(NSString *)nibNameOrNil bundle:(NSBundle *)nibBundleOrNil { self = [super initWithNibName:nibNameOrNil bundle:nibBundleOrNil]; if (self) { // Custom initialization } return self; } - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; // Do any additional setup after loading the view. // Core Data if (_managedObjectContext == nil) { _managedObjectContext = [(AppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate] managedObjectContext]; NSLog(@"After _managedObjectContext: %@", _managedObjectContext); } NSFetchRequest *request = [NSFetchRequest fetchRequestWithEntityName:@"Account"]; NSEntityDescription *entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Account" inManagedObjectContext:_managedObjectContext]; request.resultType = NSDictionaryResultType; request.propertiesToFetch = [NSArray arrayWithObject:[[entity propertiesByName] objectForKey:@"username"]]; request.returnsDistinctResults = YES; _usernames = [_managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:request error:nil]; NSLog (@"names: %@",_usernames); } -(NSInteger)numberOfComponentsInPickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView { //One column return 1; } -(NSInteger)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView numberOfRowsInComponent:(NSInteger)component { //set number of rows return _usernames.count; } -(NSString *)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView titleForRow:(NSInteger)row forComponent:(NSInteger)component { //set item per row return [_usernames objectAtIndex:row]; } - (void)didReceiveMemoryWarning { [super didReceiveMemoryWarning]; // Dispose of any resources that can be recreated. } - (void)viewDidUnload { [self setBtnDone:nil]; [self setUiPickerViewUsers:nil]; [self setBtnChangePin:nil]; [super viewDidUnload]; } - (IBAction)dismissScene:(id)sender { [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; } - (IBAction)changePin:(id)sender { } @end The current code is causing the app to crash, but the NSLog is show the results of the NSFetchRequest in the NSArray. I currently think that I am not formatting the results of the NSFetchRequest in the NSArray properly if I had to take a guess. The crash log looks like the following, 2013-06-26 16:49:24.219 KegCop[41233:c07] names: ( { username = blah; }, { username = chris; }, { username = root; } ) 2013-06-26 16:49:24.223 KegCop[41233:c07] -[NSKnownKeysDictionary1 isEqualToString:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0xe54d9a0 2013-06-26 16:49:24.223 KegCop[41233:c07] Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '-[NSKnownKeysDictionary1 isEqualToString:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0xe54d9a0' First throw call stack:

  • How to create a dynamically built Context Menu clickEvent

    - by Chris
    C#, winform I have a DataGridView and a context menu that opens when you right click a specific column. What shows up in the context menu is dependant on what's in the field clicked on - paths to multiple files (the paths are manipulated to create a full UNC path to the correct file). The only problem is that I can't get the click working. I did not drag and drop the context menu from the toolbar, I created it programmically. I figured that if I can get the path (let's call it ContextMenuChosen) to show up in MessageBox.Show(ContextMenuChosen); I could set the same to System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(ContextMenuChosen); The Mydgv_MouseUp event below actually works to the point where I can get it to fire off MessageBox.Show("foo!"); when something in the context menu is selected but that's where it ends. I left in a bunch of comments below showing what I've tried when it one of the paths are clicked. Some result in empty strings, others error (Object not set to an instance...). I searched code all day yesterday but couldn't find another way to hook up a dynamically built Context Menu clickEvent. Code and comments: ContextMenu m = new ContextMenu(); // SHOW THE RIGHT CLICK MENU private void Mydgv_MouseClick(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { if (e.Button == MouseButtons.Right) { int currentMouseOverCol = Mydgv.HitTest(e.X, e.Y).ColumnIndex; int currentMouseOverRow = Mydgv.HitTest(e.X, e.Y).RowIndex; if (currentMouseOverRow >= 0 && currentMouseOverCol == 6) { string[] paths = myPaths.Split(';'); foreach (string path in paths) { string UNCPath = "\\\\1.1.1.1\\c$\\MyPath\\"; string FilePath = path.Replace("c:\\MyPath\\", @""); m.MenuItems.Add(new MenuItem(UNCPath + FilePath)); } } m.Show(Mydgv, new Point(e.X, e.Y)); } } // SELECTING SOMETHING IN THE RIGHT CLICK MENU private void Mydgv_MouseUp(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { DataGridView.HitTestInfo hitTestInfo; if (e.Button == MouseButtons.Right) { hitTestInfo = Mydgv.HitTest(e.X, e.Y); // If column is first column if (hitTestInfo.Type == DataGridViewHitTestType.Cell && hitTestInfo.ColumnIndex == 6) { //MessageBox.Show(m.ToString()); ////MessageBox.Show(m.Tag.ToString()); //MessageBox.Show(m.Name.ToString()); //MessageBox.Show(m.MenuItems.ToString()); ////MessageBox.Show(m.MdiListItem.ToString()); // MessageBox.Show(m.Name); //if (m.MenuItems.Count > 0) //MessageBox.Show(m.MdiListItem.Text); //MessageBox.Show(m.ToString()); //MessageBox.Show(m.MenuItems.ToString()); //Mydgv.ContextMenu.Show(m.Name.ToString()); //MessageBox.Show(ContextMenu.ToString()); //MessageBox.Show(ContextMenu.MenuItems.ToString()); //MenuItem.text //MessageBox.Show(this.ContextMenu.MenuItems.ToString()); } m.MenuItems.Clear(); } } I'm very close to completing this so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, ~ Chris

  • Can't get Jacobi algorithm to work in Objective-C

    - by Chris Long
    Hi, For some reason, I can't get this program to work. I've had other CS majors look at it and they can't figure it out either. This program performs the Jacobi algorithm (you can see step-by-step instructions and a MATLAB implementation here). BTW, it's different from the Wikipedia article of the same name. Since NSArray is one-dimensional, I added a method that makes it act like a two-dimensional C array. After running the Jacobi algorithm many times, the diagonal entries in the NSArray (i[0][0], i[1][1], etc.) are supposed to get bigger and the others approach 0. For some reason though, they all increase exponentially. For instance, i[2][4] should equal 0.0000009, not 9999999, while i[2][2] should be big. Thanks in advance, Chris NSArray+Matrix.m @implementation NSArray (Matrix) @dynamic offValue, transposed; - (double)offValue { double sum = 0.0; for ( MatrixItem *item in self ) if ( item.nonDiagonal ) sum += pow( item.value, 2.0 ); return sum; } - (NSMutableArray *)transposed { NSMutableArray *transpose = [[[NSMutableArray alloc] init] autorelease]; int i, j; for ( i = 0; i < 5; i++ ) { for ( j = 0; j < 5; j++ ) { [transpose addObject:[self objectAtRow:j andColumn:i]]; } } return transpose; } - (id)objectAtRow:(NSUInteger)row andColumn:(NSUInteger)column { NSUInteger index = 5 * row + column; return [self objectAtIndex:index]; } - (NSMutableArray *)multiplyWithMatrix:(NSArray *)array { NSMutableArray *result = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; int i = 0, j = 0, k = 0; double value; for ( i = 0; i < 5; i++ ) { value = 0.0; for ( j = 0; j < 5; j++ ) { for ( k = 0; k < 5; k++ ) { MatrixItem *firstItem = [self objectAtRow:i andColumn:k]; MatrixItem *secondItem = [array objectAtRow:k andColumn:j]; value += firstItem.value * secondItem.value; } MatrixItem *item = [[MatrixItem alloc] initWithValue:value]; item.row = i; item.column = j; [result addObject:item]; } } return result; } @end Jacobi_AlgorithmAppDelegate.m // ... - (void)jacobiAlgorithmWithEntry:(MatrixItem *)entry { MatrixItem *b11 = [matrix objectAtRow:entry.row andColumn:entry.row]; MatrixItem *b22 = [matrix objectAtRow:entry.column andColumn:entry.column]; double muPlus = ( b22.value + b11.value ) / 2.0; muPlus += sqrt( pow((b22.value - b11.value), 2.0) + 4.0 * pow(entry.value, 2.0) ); Vector *u1 = [[[Vector alloc] initWithX:(-1.0 * entry.value) andY:(b11.value - muPlus)] autorelease]; [u1 normalize]; Vector *u2 = [[[Vector alloc] initWithX:-u1.y andY:u1.x] autorelease]; NSMutableArray *g = [[[NSMutableArray alloc] init] autorelease]; for ( int i = 0; i <= 24; i++ ) { MatrixItem *item = [[[MatrixItem alloc] init] autorelease]; if ( i == 6*entry.row ) item.value = u1.x; else if ( i == 6*entry.column ) item.value = u2.y; else if ( i == ( 5*entry.row + entry.column ) || i == ( 5*entry.column + entry.row ) ) item.value = u1.y; else if ( i % 6 == 0 ) item.value = 1.0; else item.value = 0.0; [g addObject:item]; } NSMutableArray *firstResult = [[g.transposed multiplyWithMatrix:matrix] autorelease]; matrix = [firstResult multiplyWithMatrix:g]; } // ...

  • JNI String Corruption

    - by Chris Dennett
    Hi everyone, I'm getting weird string corruption across JNI calls which is causing problems on the the Java side. Every so often, I'll get a corrupted string in the passed array, which sometimes has existing parts of the original non-corrupted string. The C++ code is supposed to set the first index of the array to the address, it's a nasty hack to get around method call limitations. Additionally, the application is multi-threaded. remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.1.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.4.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.6.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.2.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.9.2:49153 remoteaddress[0]: {garbage here} java.lang.NullPointerException at kokuks.KKSAddress.<init>(KKSAddress.java:139) at kokuks.KKSAddress.createAddress(KKSAddress.java:48) at kokuks.KKSSocket._recvFrom(KKSSocket.java:963) at kokuks.scheduler.RecvOperation$1.execute(RecvOperation.java:144) at kokuks.scheduler.RecvOperation$1.execute(RecvOperation.java:1) at kokuks.KKSEvent.run(KKSEvent.java:58) at kokuks.KokuKS.handleJNIEventExpiry(KokuKS.java:872) at kokuks.KokuKS.handleJNIEventExpiry_fjni(KokuKS.java:880) at kokuks.KokuKS.runSimulator_jni(Native Method) at kokuks.KokuKS$1.run(KokuKS.java:773) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:717) remoteaddress[0]: 10.1.7.2:49153 The null pointer exception comes from trying to use the corrupt string. In C++, the address prints to standard out normally, but doing this reduces the rate of errors, from what I can see. • Friday Fun: Factory Balls – Christmas Edition

    - by Asian Angel
    Your weekend is almost here, but until the work day is over we have another fun holiday game for you. This week your job is to correctly decorate/paint the ornaments that go on the Christmas tree. Simple you say? Maybe, but maybe not! Factory Balls – Christmas Edition The object of the game is to correctly decorate/paint each Christmas ornament exactly as shown in the “sample image” provided for each level. What starts off as simple will quickly have you working to figure out the correct combination or sequence to complete each ornament. Are you ready? The first level serves as a tutorial to help you become comfortable with how to decorate/paint the ornaments. To move an ornament to a paint bucket or cover part of it with one of the helper items simply drag the ornament towards that area. The ornament will automatically move back to its’ starting position when the action is complete. First, a nice coat of red paint followed by covering the middle area with a horizontal belt. Once the belt is on move the ornament to the bucket of yellow paint. Next, you will need to remove the belt, so move the ornament back to the belt’s original position. One ornament finished! As soon as you complete decorating/painting an ornament, you move on to the next level and will be shown the next “sample Image” in the upper right corner. Starting with a coat of orange paint sounds good… Pop the little serrated edge cap on top… Add some blue paint… Almost have it… Place the large serrated edge cap on top… Another dip in the orange paint… And the second ornament is finished. Level three looks a little bit tougher…just work out your pattern of helper items & colors and you will definitely get it! Have fun decorating/painting those ornaments! Note: Starting with level four you will need to start using a combination of two helper items combined at times to properly complete the ornaments. • Limiting DOPs &ndash; Who rules over whom?

    - by jean-pierre.dijcks
    I've gotten a couple of questions from Dan Morgan and figured I start to answer them in this way. While Dan is running on a big system he is running with Database Resource Manager and he is trying to make sure the system doesn't go crazy (remember end user are never, ever crazy!) on very high DOPs. Q: How do I control statements with very high DOPs driven from user hints in queries? A: The best way to do this is to work with DBRM and impose limits on consumer groups. The Max DOP setting you can set in DBRM allows you to overwrite the hint. Now let's go into some more detail here. Assume my object (and for simplicity we assume there is a single object - and do remember that we always pick the highest DOP when in doubt and when conflicting DOPs are available in a query) has PARALLEL 64 as its setting. Assume that the query that selects something cool from that table lives in a consumer group with a max DOP of 32. Assume no goofy things (like running out of parallel_max_servers) are happening. A query selecting from this table will run at DOP 32 because DBRM caps the DOP. As of 11.2.0.1 we also use the DBRM cap to create the original plan (at compile time) and not just enforce the cap at runtime. Now, my user is smart and writes a query with a parallel hint requesting DOP 128. This query is still capped by DBRM and DBRM overrules the hint in the statement. The statement, despite the hint, runs at DOP 32. Note that in the hinted scenario we do compile the statement with DOP 128 (the optimizer obeys the hint). This is another reason to use table decoration rather than hints. Q: What happens if I set parallel_max_servers higher than processes (e.g. the max number of processes allowed to run on my machine)? A: Processes rules. It is important to understand that processes are fixed at startup time. If you increase parallel_max_servers above the number of processes in the processes parameter you should get a warning in the alert log stating it can not take effect. As a follow up, a hinted query requesting more parallel processes than either parallel_max_servers or processes will not be able to acquire the requested number. Parallel_max_processes will prevent this. And since parallel_max_servers should be lower than max processes you can never go over either...

    Is it possible with PHP to dynamically toggle CNAME entries? For example I have two mirrors with media to be served on my website. Mirror 1 has a monthly bandwidth cap so upon reaching it I want to automatically toggle to mirror 2. I want to use CNAME because the resulting urls appear to be identical to search engines, an SEO friendly approach. If there are SEO friendly alternatives I'd like to hear them as well.
