  • Rails Gem Install Problems: Google-Geocode

    I'm try to install google-geocode for rails sudo gem install google-geocode but I get the following error. Any suggestions? Building native extensions. This could take a while...   • Why didn't 12.04 install?

    Ok, so I've installed Ubuntu many times on my computer.. Normally on the same partition, and WIndows would always delete Ubuntu(I don't know how.. it just happens) if i go away from keyboard during boot and it chooses Windows automatically because I took to long. So i tried to reinstall again, but after the fifth time it wouldn't let me, and told me to check "wubi-12.04-rev266.log". It took a while to find, but when i found it, I had no idea what any of it meant, as I'm no programmer.I first tried this the day Precise Pangolin came out. SO skip ahead 2.5 months, when I finally found this file, and i then got the idea of making a new partition to install Ubuntu on, but I used wubi, like I always did. It didn't look like it would f anything up, so I did it. it went through all the downloads, extracting, etc. Which took about 40 minutes total, then ended with an error message saying to check "wubi-12.04-rev266.log". i did.   • System State Backups using NTbackup fail with error 0x800423f4 (relating to volume shadow copy)

    We have a Windows Server 2003 R2 running Service Pack 2. It is a domain controller (Global Catalog) and our main internal DNS server. We run a System State backup of the machine to back up Active Directory information and save the backup to a different server. This server has a single drive (C:), and we do have Shadow Copies enabled for the volume (which are completing successfully). The System State Backup is now failing with the following listed in the backup logs: Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1. "Event Log Writer" has reported an error 0x800423f4. This is part of System State. The backup cannot continue. Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:800423f4 Aborting Backup. The operation did not successfully complete. When doing a vssadmin list writers, we sometimes get the following reported for the Event Log Writer (other times it says that it is in the state of "[1] Stable" with "No error"): Writer name: 'Event Log Writer' Writer Id: {eee8c692-67ed-4250-8d86-390603070d00} Writer Instance Id: {c7194e96-868a-49e5-ba99-89b61977753c} State: [8] Failed Last error: Retryable error We have tried disabling the event log service via the registry, rebooting, deleting the event log files from the drive, then re-enabling the service via the registry and rebooting, but this didn't seem to solve the issue. We also get an error message when in the event viewer when trying to open the log for the "File Replication Service" of "Unable to complete the operation on 'File Replication Service'. The security descriptor structure is invalid." I have searched the error via Google and tried a number of different things, but nothing has seemed to help. Any suggestions on what we might try to get the Event Log Writer to behave would be greatly appreciated!

  • itunes iphone sync stuck on "Waiting for items to copy"

    superuser crowd, I've found a number of threads about this, but have yet to find a satisfactory answer. Perhaps I'll have better luck on this site?? I hope so... I'm having a problem with iTunes where syncing my iPhone ends up seeming to basically finish, but it says "Waiting for items to copy" after everything else, and just stays there for... well, a very long time, if I let it. Oh, and I'm not sure this is always the case, but at the moment, it's doing this while "Syncing Genius Data to [my iPhone] (Step 8 of 8)". If I click the little x in iTunes, it then gets stuck on "Canceling sync", for an equally indefinite sort of period. If I simply unplug the phone, everything seems to be synced and happy, but the next time I sync, it happens again. I presume this is a bug of some sort on Apple's part, but it seems like people have found workarounds... I'm just having trouble tracking one down that (a) is well described enough that I can actually follow it, (b) has enough detail that I can do it without losing data (i.e. tells me pathnames that I might want to copy first, or the like, before telling me to remove something) (note: see also point (a) -- I can't remove it if it's telling me to remove something that I don't know where it is!), and (c) otherwise seems sane. I'm hoping that here perhaps I'll get better luck -- with either a workaround, and/or debugging tips for figuring out how to find myself a workaround. Note: I'm busy with some other things at the moment, but can try to add some additional information later, if necessary.

  • I used disk copy to clone my drive, now my windows 7 profile won't load correctly

    I used easeuse disk copy, after acronis, clonezilla, windows image restore failed me. Basically it copys all sectors, I set it to skip bad sectors(40). The source drive works, it just gave me a couple errors and stopped booting at one point. The drive is an identical copy, minus 40 bad errors. The drive is set to C and active partition, I rebuilt the boot order. I've ran sfc /scannow and ran chkdsk /r chkdsk found 20kb of bad sectors if I remember right. Now the issue I get is when I log into my profile which was saved right, I get a blank light blue wallpaper (non-license) explorer.exe is not running, and there are only 4 processes running in taskmanager, including taskmanager. I would try a repair install but CRTL-E would not open, nothing will open once I force start explorer.exe, almost like all services are down. What should I do? Fresh install is almost not a possibility I will try and fix this issue. sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows returns "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"

    Requirement Changes will be made to the REPO directory and this should get updated to wc(working copy) as opposed to the normal way of WC REPO. Senario: My svn repo- /var/www/svn/drupal My checkout-dir/working-copy- /var/www/html/drupalsite So I've done: edited post-commit hook to contain: "/usr/bin/svn update /var/www/html/drupalsite" I won't make any change to svn WC. I'll make changes to svn REPO- /var/www/svn/drupal. After changes are made to svn repo, run "svn commit /var/www/html/drupalsite". This will trigger the post-commit hook. This inturn will run "svn update /var/www/svn/drupal" and thus my WC will get updated with the changes of REPO. Query a. Would the above steps 1-3 help achieve my 'Requirement'? b. I'd need advise on how to test if the above setup works successfully or not. I'm at loss about the success of steps 1-3 the reason why query(a) is present. This is a bit more of a concern for me. NB: I'm new to subversion. Whatever I've configured till now have been done by reading articles online. Reason for query (b) is because I'm not into development. It seems to be a php drupal website and I happen to be setting it up. So I'm not aware as to how to make a "PROPER" change in REPO so that it gets reflected in WC. If reflected, my configs are right and the team can start on development. I manually put a random file/folder into REPO dir for seeing a change in WC and ran steps 1-3 but was of no avail and later on learned that it was NOT the way to make a change to a REPO. I have a catch 22 situation where I feel nervous that I haven't backed up my iPod in around 4 months (when my drive failed) so I'd like to back it up as soon as possible... but if I back it up I have to clear all the songs and playlists and copy them back, which I can't really do since I need to rebuild my playlists on my computer first (using the data only available on my iPod!) The question: is there a better way to READ the information off my iPod than doing it manually, song by song and album by album and playlist by playlist (XML, text dump, database, spreadsheet, anything). In other words, mostly I want the information (metadata like ratings and playlists, not songs) copied off the iPod so I can more quickly get my iTunes library ratings and playlists re-built (manually) so I can finally wipe the music and back up my apps, etc. Then I'd like to copy the music back immediately. The part I'd like to avoid is manually navigating everything on my iPod to read through all the playlists and ratings (50 GB, 6,000+ songs) as I re-enter all of that data by hand. I've done a few dozen albums and it's pretty time consuming having to tap around on the iPod. Reading from a spreadsheet (for example, or XML which I could write a script to get into spreadsheet form) would probably help tremendously, plus then I'd have a backup of that information somewhere besides just my iPod.

    If several computers with local addresses (192.168.0.#) are connected to a router and each computer opens a web browser and requests a page over HTTP, when these TCP:80 packets are sent out, the router switches the local address with the static IP of the router (i.e. Provider given IP) so the server can reply to the appropriate address. But how does the router know to which computer to forward the HTTP reply, since the TCP header does not contain the local IP address (does it?), and all computers are using port 80? Does this have anything to do with the MAC addresses? How exactly does this work?

  • Cannot resolve a single A Record from client machine

    I set up a simple Bind server on my VPS and it is working properly. The problem occurs with my local windows machines, which are connected to internet through the home router. I created an A-record named 'dev' and it is invisible from my local network for some reason, though people from other locations can resolve dev.mydomain.com. Ironically, dev.mydomain.com cannot be resolved for myself only. If I add another A-record, say, 'gamma' then it becomes visible from my local windows machines instantly. So this is just for that particular 'dev' name. The only difference is that I had dev.mydomain.com server on another IP but that was a month ago; all nameservers have been changed since then. I tried to reboot my router and flushed dns cache on windows machines: no result. Thank you in advance.

    Hi guys, I've run into the following annoying and seemingly incorrect behaviour in the Visual Studio 2008 C++ compiler: Suppose I have a class library - Car.lib - that uses a "Car" class, with a header called "Car.h": class Car { public: void Drive() { Accelerate(); } void Accelerate(); }; What I'm actually trying to do is use the Car headers (for some other functions), but without having to link with Car.lib itself (the actual class is not called "Car" but I am sanitising this example). If I #include "Car.h" in the .cpp file used to build a managed C++ .dll, but never refer to Car, everything compiles and links fine. This is because I never instantiate a Car object. However, the following: namespace { class Car { public: Car(const Car& rhs) { Accelerate(); } void Accelerate(); }; } leaves me with the link error: Error 2 error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: void __thiscall `anonymous namespace'::Car::Accelerate(void)" (?Accelerate@Car@?A0xce3bb5ed@@$$FQAEXXZ) CREObjectWrapper.obj CREObjectBuilderWrapper Note I've declared the whole thing inside an anonymous namespace so there's no way that the Car functions could be exported from the .DLL in any case. Declaring the copy constructor out-of-line makes no difference. i.e. the following also fails to link: class Car { public: Car(const Car& rhs); void Accelerate(); }; Car::Car(const Car& rhs) { Accelerate(); } It's something specifically to do with the copy constructor note, because the following, for example, does link: class Car { public: Car() { Accelerate(); } void Accelerate(); }; I am not a C++ standards guru but this doesn't seem correct to me. Surely the compiler still should not have had to even generate any code that calls the Car copy constructor. Can anyone confirm if this behaviour is correct? It's been a while since I used C++ - but I don't think this used to be an issue with Visual Studio 6.0 for example. Can anyone suggest a workaround that allows one to "re-use" the Accelerate method from within the copy constructor and still have the copy constructor declared inline?

  • Why would this Lua optimization hack help?

    i'm looking over a document that describes various techniques to improve performance of Lua script code, and i'm shocked that such tricks would be required. (Although i'm quoting Lua, i've seen similar hacks in Javascript). Why would this optimization be required: For instance, the code for i = 1, 1000000 do local x = math.sin(i) end runs 30% slower than this one: local sin = math.sin for i = 1, 1000000 do local x = sin(i) end They're re-declaring sin function locally. Why would this be helpful? It's the job of the compiler to do that anyway. Why is the programmer having to do the compiler's job? i've seen similar things in Javascript; and so obviously there must be a very good reason why the interpreting compiler isn't doing its job. What is it? i see it repeatedly in the Lua environment i'm fiddling in; people redeclaring variables as local: local strfind = strfind local strlen = strlen local gsub = gsub local pairs = pairs local ipairs = ipairs local type = type local tinsert = tinsert local tremove = tremove local unpack = unpack local max = max local min = min local floor = floor local ceil = ceil local loadstring = loadstring local tostring = tostring local setmetatable = setmetatable local getmetatable = getmetatable local format = format local sin = math.sin What is going on here that people have to do the work of the compiler? Is the compiler confused by how to find format? Why is this an issue that a programmer has to deal with?   • HTA value update freezes when file copy starts

  • Local dns for testing websites using mobile devices

    Hi. I have no idea where to start from so sorry in advance if this topic has already been discussed. I usually develop web sites using my laptop as a development server, and recently I needed to test a web site using various mobile devices that can connect via wifi. Having no real AP, I set up a ad-hoc network using my laptop's wireless card and the devices can correctly browse the Internet and access the laptop's web server. The setup is as follows: subnet: 192.168.1.0/24 gateway to the Internet (wired adsl router/modem): 192.168.1.1 laptop: 192.168.1.64 (eth0, wired if connected to the gateway) and 192.168.1.32 (eth1, wifi if somewhat bridged to eth0) mobile devices (same for all, I only use one of them at any time for simplicity): 192.168.1.11 with default gw 192.168.1.1 Now, if I open either 192.168.1.32 or 192.168.1.64 from the mobile devices, I correctly get the default host of my Apache configuration. However I usually work with virtual hosts for many practical reasons, one of which being Drupal's peculiar implementation of multi-sites. For those who don't know how this works, Drupal takes the request's hostname and searches into its sites/ subdirectories for an appropriate configuration file. So, for example, suppose I request www.example.com, then Drupal would search for a config file in the following directories: sites/www.example.com/ sites/example.com/ sites/com/ sites/default/ So I decided to adopt the following style of virtual hosts: if the website I'm working on will be accessible using www.example.com I set up a sites/www.example.com/ directory and create a virtual host for local.www.example.com so Drupal have no trouble finding it. I've been told this is suboptimal from a dns point of view since I'd have to create an authoritative entry for example.com and turn Bind on only when I'm supposed to access the local copy, which is weird. However, if this is the only path I can follow, I still have some problems with Bind's configuration, as I couldn't find any guide that tells me in a clear, noob-friendly way, how to set up such an entry. On the other hand, I was wondering if I could set up an authoritative entry for local, so I could access www.example.com.local and tell in some way (which I don't even know if this is possible) Apache to put www.example.com instead of www.example.com.local in the relevant environment variable. Anyway, I have a last problem, sort of: when I launch Bind in debug mode with high verbosity, and make 192.168.1.32 as the primary dns for the devices, the output doesn't say anything about requests being made from the devices to Bind, so I'm not even sure it comes into play. As you can see, I'm a complete noob at these matters, but I'm eager to learn, so any help/pointer will be appreciated.

  • How to set up a centralized backup server with lots of offsite workstations, intermittent internet connectivity, and stubborn users?

    This might be an impossible question. Context: We have a bunch of computers across around 1000 users. We have a centralized office where 900 of the users work, most of the time. Most of the computers are laptops. They are very frequently coming on and off the network for hours at a time. Users often take their computers home and do lots of work from home. In addition, there are a handful of users who work elsewhere in the country, who are offline (no internet connection whatsoever) for more than half of the time they use their machines. All of the machines are Windows 7/XP. Problem: People are always losing data. One day someone accidentally deletes a bunch of files. The next day someone else installs a bad driver or tries to mess with something in system32 and needs a personal data backup/reinstall of Windows. Because of how many of our business operations are done without an internet connection, and how frequently computers come on- and offline, it's unfeasible to make users use network storage for all of their data. We tried giving them Dropboxes, and they stored their files elsewhere. We bought and deployed Altiris, and they uninstalled it and blamed us when they couldn't get files back that they accidentally deleted while they were offline and hadn't taken a backup in months. We tried teaching them backup best-practices, and using scheduled sync tools to upload things to the network drives, and they turned them off because they "looked like viruses". It doesn't help that many of these users are pretty high up in the business and are not amicable to any sort of "you need to do something regularly because we say so" solution. Question: Other than finding another job where IT is treated differently and users are willing to follow best practices, how would people recommend I implement a file backup solution that supports the following: Backs up to a centralized server over LAN or WAN whenever a network link becomes available, or on a schedule. Supports interrupted/resumed backups (and hopefully file-delta only backups), since connections to the network (WAN or LAN) are often slow and only open for half an hour or so. Supports relatively rapid, "I accidentally deleted the TPS reports! Oh no!" single-file recovery, ideally administered from the central backup server rather than the client PC. Supports local-to-local file delta backup on a schedule, so that users without a network connection for a few days can still retrieve accidental deletions or whatnot. Ideally, the local stored backups would be pushed up to the server whenever network link is available. Isn't configurable on the clients without certain credentials. Because the CFOs (who won't give up their admin rights on the domain) will disable it if they can. Backs up the entire hard drive. There are people who are self-righteous about storing things in C:\, or in the recycle bin, or in the C:\Windows dir (yes, I know). I'm fine integrating multiple products/solutions, or scripting different programs together myself (I'm a somewhat competent programmer), but I've been drawing a blank on where to start. Dropbox is folder-specific, Altiris doesn't cope with LAN outages or interrupted/resumed backups, Volume Shadow Copy is awesome for a local-to-local solution, but I don't know how to push days of stored shadow copies up to a server in a 2 hour window of network access. The company is fine with spending decent money on this, thousands (USD) on a server, and hundreds on clients, if necessary. I want to emphasize that this isn't a shopping list request. While I wish there was a program out there that did what I want, I've looked pretty hard, and not found anything that fits the bill. Instead, I'm hoping for ideas on where to start hacking things together from scratch/from different technologies to make something stable that works. Cheers!

  • Cannot Change "Log on through Terminal Services" in Local Security Policy XP from Server 2008 GP

    This is a mixed AD environment, Server 2003 R2 and 2008 R2 I have a 2003 AD R2 and a 2008 R2 AD. GPO is usually managed from the 2008 R2 machine. I have a RD Gateway on another server as well. I setup the CAP and RAP to allow a normal user to log on to the departments workstation. I also adjusted the GPO for that OU to allow Log on trhough Remote Desktop Gateway for the user group. This worked on my windows 7 workstation. But unfortunately the policy is a different name in XP "allow log on through Terminal Services" I can get through right into the machine but when the log on actually happens to the local machine i get the "Cannot log on interactively" error. This is set in (for the local machine) Secpol.msc Local Security Policy "user rights assignment" but is controlled by the GPO in Computer Configuration Policies Security Settings Local Policies "User Rights Assignment" Do I simply need to adjust the same setting on the same GPO but with a server 2003 GP editor? Feel like that could cause issues... Looking for some direction. Or if anyone has run into this issue yet. UPDATE Should this work? support.microsoft.com/kb/186529 Still seems like I will have the issue as the actual GP settings for Log on through Terminal Services is still different between Server 2008 R2 and 2003 R2.... Another Thought: Should I delete the GPO made for the department and remake it with the 2003 R2 server? I have no 2008 specific settings as the whole department runs XP other than myself. If that's a solution I will move my computer out of the department as a solution... Thoughts?
