• How much does it wear an SD card to be frequently removed/reinserted?

  My digital camera (a Sony a55) stores photos on an SD card. When I want to transfer these to my computer (a mid-2010 MacBook Pro), I have two options: use the USB cable to connect the camera to the computer, or use the computer's built-in SD card reader. The camera's SD card slot is the standard click-in, click-out (spring-loaded) mechanism. My laptop has a simple slot into which the card slides with a little more resistance than the former (the card slides only about halfway in so it can be easily removed). I notice that the card's contacts now have some shiny marks from one or both of these card slots: Does this type of wear threaten to significantly damage the card? Should I avoid switching the card between slots frequently, to extend its lifetime?

• Reliable 1tb or larger hard drive?

  I am in the market for 2-3 new drives, I would like each to be at least 1tb to 2tb in size. I have been reading all the reviews on newegg.com for 1tb and larger drives and they all have 1 thing in common. Almost all the ones I read about have complaints of them being DOA or dieing within a few weeks of use. I am hoping to find some drives with this storage range that have a reputation for lasting a long time instead of a short life. Please help me if you have any experience with these sort of drives? Most the ones I read about were Western Digital brand. I realize some might complain that this questions answer would be based upon a timeframe, so if a user searches and find this answer a year from now it will be outdated but I would appreciate any help based on the current hard drives available as of April 10th, 2010 on newegg.com

• Windows 8.1 killed my wifi

  Was running Windows 8 on a Lenovo G780 and updated to windows 8.1 Wifi does not work anymore, i always receive a dns server not responding error. I have tried using public dns servers from Google but with still no results. I've restarted my router with no results. All other devices on my network are having no trouble at all. I've tried updating the wireless driver but the manufacturers website claims that the Win8.1 driver should be updated with the update from windows. So i cant find a wireless driver... Anyone else having this error and does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?? • Is it possible to change the default scan folder on an Eye-Fi Wireless SD Card

  By default Eye-Fi cards scan the DCIM folder (and subfolders) used by most digital cameras for new images to upload. Is there a way of changing this to a different folder? In my particular case I'm using a Kodak photo scanner (P461) that uses a PHOTO(N) folder format to store the scanned images, as far as I know the device has no configuration interface to alter this setting so that doesn't seem to be an option. This topic on the Eye-Fi forums is the closest I've come to a solution, but a perfunctory investigation of Disk Probe doesn't make it obvious what needs to be modified on the card.

  In case you were wondering DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is a set of standards in medical imaging. I have a CT result saved conforming to that standard and I want to be able to see the scans. The directory structure looks like this: 123456 (folder) |- 2342345 (file) |- 2342346 (file) |- 2342347 (file) |- [...] (more files) DICOMDIR (file) A Google search showed a lot of results for DICOM viewer and I even tried one but it only shows the thumbnails of the images. • Enable multiple audio output on Windows 7

  For Windows 7, 64 bit: I have a digital SPDIF output to my stereo, which controls speakers in other rooms. I also have a set of speakers connected to the regular audio jack at the computer. This allows me to send music to the kitchen while my child plays games on the computer. Works great. Except when I'm playing games and still want to listen to music. ;-D I know I can manually switch WMP to play through the speakers instead of SPDIF, but I was wondering if there's any way to enable simultaneous audio out in Windows 7? Virtual Audio Card is a non-starter because I'm running 64 bits and the VAC driver isn't signed.

  My laptop came with a 500 GB hard drive. I use my laptop for storing my digital photographs, and only have about 14 GB of file storage left on the original hard drive. I have a 750 GB external hard drive, but am leery of relying on it for primary storage as I tend to knock things over and it has already crashed once and I lost a lot of the files. I am looking at a 1 TB internal hard drive, but am concerned if storing so much data will affect the computer's performance. Should I also increase RAM from 4 to 8 GB (the limit for my 64-bit, Windows 7, Asus A54C laptop)?

• Setting up 2 external monitors on a laptop with VGA splitter

  I have a laptop with a graphics card that supports 2 displays. I would like to know the easiest way to set it up so I can close my laptop lid and use 2 external monitors (unique displays). I use it primarily for office applications and video and want a quality, clear picture. The laptop has 1 VGA port and I have 2 24" 1920x1200 monitors that have VGA and DVI ports. So a few questions: Can I just use a VGA splitter? (seen mixed feedback on this) Would it a VGA to 2 DVI splitter give a better picture quality? • RoboCopy Log Files missing whitespace?

  So I'm working on a script to use RoboCopy to copy a bunch of files, and log what it's copied. It works reasonably well, except for the logfiles. They tend to look like this: C:\Users\Tech\Documents\desktop.initechscan1.jpgtechscan2.jpgtechscan3.jpgtechscan4.jpgtechscan5.jpgwsus.jpgwsus2.jpgC:\Users\Tech\Documents\My Music\C:\Users\Tech\Documents\My Pictures\C:\Users\Tech\Documents\My Videos\C:\Users\Tech\Documents\My Digital Editions\ As you can see, the log seems to be missing all whitespace and separators between entries. Is there something I can do to fix this? It's kind of frustrating. The commandline I'm using is this: C:\Users\Tech\Desktop>Robocopy.exe C:\Users\Tech\Documents c:\Temp /e /l /b /xj /xf ntuser.* desktop.ini *.lnk /np /njh /log:migratedfiles.txt /v I have the /l in there since I'm debugging, and it's the easiest way to keep from copying everything a million times.

  I have recurring BSODs that really have me scratching my head. Here's a look at the errors: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT 0x1A (ntoskrnl.exe) - I've seen this 9 times since April 2012 NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM 0x24 (Ntfs.sys) - this one's new, happend 4 days ago BAD_POOL_HEADER 0x19 (win32k.sys) - also new, happened 7 days ago My system specs: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz ASUS Sabertooth P67 Motherboard (Rev 2) * RMA'd my Rev 1 due to recall 16GB (4 x 4GB) Kingston HyperX 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM 2 x 640GB Western Digital Caviar Black 64MB SATA HDD EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTS450 1GB PCI-E 2.0 Graphics Card I've got Windows 7 Home Premium and it's completely patched. I'm also running Microsoft Security Essentials, which is up-to-date and always present. I've run MemTest86+ from a USB drive for up to nine hours, giving my RAM a total of 6 passes, and it didn't detect a single error. I've used chkdsk in Windows 7 to scan the C:/ drive on boot (twice) and it found no problems. How can I find out what's causing all these blue screens?

• Does a bad Internet connection increase bandwidth usage?

  My (Rogers) cable connection has been pretty bad recently (channels 3 and 10 are particularly fuzzy—it’s analog, not digital cable). Not surprisingly, this has caused my cable modem to drop out and have to reestablish a connection a couple of times since it started. The poor connection of course means higher corruption (not necessarily dropped per se) which causes the TCP/IP stack to have to retransmit packets more often. Reduction of bandwidth throughput aside, I got to wondering if it increases the actual bandwidth usage. That is, if there is a high error rate on the line causing packets to have to be retransmitted: Does this increase a bandwidth monitoring program’s numbers? Does the ISP count the retransmitted packets toward the monthly cap? Based on what I remember from my university networking courses and common sense, I have a feeling that the answer to both questions is yes, but I cannot reliably measure the first, and have no authoritative answer for the second. I’m wondering if maybe the retransmitted packets are acknowledged as being duplicates and thus not counted somewhere along the line.

  As a junior technician I've had to deal with (or will have to deal with) some problems in the past and only being a junior technician I don't have the confidence or respect from management staff to speak up. For instance, we're having a entirely new system. From Windows Server 2003/XP going to Windows Server 2008 R2/Windows 7/VMWare/Digital Signage and the current amount of time dedicated to the training of the IT support department currently stands at 0. They seem to think that all IT systems are the same and are going to get a bit of shock when I can't help them. I think there;s some UK legislation saying a school/business have to put money and time aside for training, but I'm not sure. What have you had to deal with?

  I'm new to digital books and I use the Kindle app for Windows to read the books I bought but I hate how I can't read the bottom paragraph of a book in the Kindle app in the centre of the monitor; I have to bend my neck down and it gets sore fast. Problem is that I can't move the Kindle book page up or halfway as when I'm reading a PDF document; if you try to move the page in Kindle it skips to the next new page. So, I thought maybe converting my books to PDF will solve the problem. How do I convert Kindle books into the PDF format? Does anyone have another solution?   I'm trying to record analogue stereo sound with my MacBookAir. The external mic is plugged to the headphones jack, but it is not being shown in the System Preferences. I did a little bit of research, and there is some rumor, that the headphone jack only supports digital-in for mics.   Hello, I'm planing to build a little linux homeserver. It will mainly be used for storage and maybe as an media pc. I plan to build a software raid5 with 4 1.5TB or 2TB hard drives. I already decided to use the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive, but then I read about some problems with the WD green series about many drives failing and that they are not recommended for raid anyway. Of course, I couldn't find much facts on the issues so I thought I just ask here ;-) What hard drives would you recommended for a software raid5 setup? As I only need it for storage, the whole thing doesn't have to be too fast. So I prefer a cheap price and silence to great performance.

• Computer turns off and on after start ..then goes dead

  I built a new PC from the following components: - CPU: Intel Core i7 950 - MB: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R - RAM: 2x2gb i7 Corsair memory - VGA: Zotac AMP2 GTX260 - HDD: 1 GreenSATA HDD (Western Digital 500gb RE2) When I turn it on, it goes for a few seconds, fans at maximum speed, then turns off. The again, it starts by itself.. and goes with fans on max speed, nothing happens. First I suspected my PSU. It's a Chieftec 450AA PSU. After I borrowed a Chieftec 550AA PSU, I tried to start with that. Exact same story. Any idea ? Do I need a bigger PSU? Reason why its not localized. I never seen this turn on, off, on. If you give answer for that, it would already help people like me, with the same problem.

• My MacBook Pro (2011) is dead

  I connected my Sony digital camera with the MacBook and the screen turned black. I wonder why because the Sony camera was not on at the time and technically could not be accessed. So I thought it might be temporary and I turned on my camera. Well, it did not work, but my MacBook Pro has been dead since then. It will not turn on - when I hold the power button for five seconds, nothing happens. When I connect the charger cable, the green light is very dim and blinks a little (with about 20% illumination). I wonder what the problem is. I have to call Apple Care, but just so that I know, what could be wrong? Is my MacBook permanently dead? It might be under warranty but I am not sure.

• Hibernate speed, and hard drive temperature

  My computer is taking in the region of 4 minutes or so, to hibernate 4GB of RAM. Also, resting my hand on the top of it is rather hot to the touch, so I ran CrystalDisk Info and that is reporting a temperature of 49 degrees C. I It's a Western Digital 5400 rpm drive, I've had it in the laptop since I bought it for most of the 2.75 years I've had it. Power on Count is 1219 Power on Hours is 3940 hours Boot up time is quicker than resuming from hibernate, too. Is there anything I can / should check ? Advice is greatly appreciated.

• Authentication issues setting up iRedMail on Debian

  I'm setting up an exchange server using iRedMail. Following the official iRedMail installation guide (http://www.iredmail.org/install_iredmail_on_debian.html) and the Digital Ocean guide (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-iredmail-on-ubuntu-12-04-x64) I was able to install iRedMail without any problems, so I have all the services up and running. I can configure domains and emails using iRedAdmin BUT I have problem both sending and receiving email, what I get from Roundcube is 'Authentication error' when trying to send an email. Also I can't receive anything. I also tried to connect to the mx server using telnet, it connects, but after the STARTTLS command, when I start to write "MAIL FROM:" the connection is lost. Something in the configuration is not working (at the moment I have the configuration written by the iRedMail installation) but I do not know where, I hope someone can enlight me! Thank you

  When looking for large new drives (= 1 TB) on newegg and the like, I note a number of reviews talking about drives being either D.O.A. or hitting the Click of Death (or even releasing the Magic Smoke) within a week or so of use. A portion of the reviews mention this phenomenon whether the drive in question is Western Digital or Hitachi or whatever. For those of you using Windows, what do you to: 1) Place a large initial stress on the drive to see if it can take it? For how long? 2) Test the drive afterwards (presumably with some sort of S.M.A.R.T. tool or others) to see if any negative changes have been noted? Note: This is one component of a larger plan for both high-availability and backups for my home data.

• HFS partition mounting read-only

  Hey, I have an external Western Digital Hard drive with two HFS partitions with journaling disabled. When I connect it to a computer running Linux (Debian or Ubuntu), frequently both partitions are mounted read-only. In the past, mounting them on my Macbook and executing the command to disable the journaling often worked (even though it would tell me that journaling was already disabled) but I would love to have a solution which works every time. Thanks! Edit: In light of Chris Johnsen's comment below - my question is how to mount the filesystem read+write on Linux since it is not automatically doing so itself
