• 403 Forbidden when trying to download file that was uploaded using SSH

  I have FTP access to an Apache server on linux to upload files so that they can be downloadable from the web. I recently was granted SSH access for extra permissions and figured that it would be quicker to download the files directly to the server, instead of downloading them to my machine then FTPing to the server. When I downloaded a file using SSH to the server, and then placed it in the public_html directory, it was not visible from the web. The permissions (from SSH and the FTP client) were the same as all the other files that are visible, but it was not visible in the directory listing, and if I tried to type in the filename into my browser I would get a 403 error. Obviously, when I FTP a file to the server something else happens that makes it web visible, that I am not currently privy to. What am I missing that is causing the file to be invisible from the web?

  I need to transfer files/folders between a remote machine running Linux and my local machine running Windows XP. I usually access the remote machine through ssh, and sometimes use VNC sessions. What is the easiest way to transfer a file from the remote machine to my local machine and vice versa? I think ftp should be the solution. Is there a better way? If ftp is a good option, how do I initiate the transfer? Do I need to setup ftp servers on both the machines and then transfer? What exactly needs to be done?

• Fast, reliable data transfers from/to China

  We are a small company and we will need to transfer rather large amounts of data (10GB+ each time) between Europe and China in the near future. As many may have experienced, Internet connections to or from China can be rather unreliable and slow at times without any apparent reason. For example, while sending data to China via FTP generally works well, it can be painfully slow in the other direction. Currently, we are investigating new ways to have high transfer rates in both directions. So far we have tried: FTP (see above) FTP over VPN services (generally slower than direct connections) F2F (like Retroshare or Freenet - slow!!) Aspera (fast but expensive!) BitTorrent (unreachable end nodes, b/c of firewalls which we must not configure) We would like to try: Cloud storage (e.g. Amazon S3, Google Storage) - are those services always and reliably reachable from inside China? Point-to-Point VPN (currently not possible, b/c of the network, see above) I'd be especially grateful to hear from people who have already dealt with this kind of problem before.

  Hi guys, Suppose I have a server accessible via FTP and it hosts websites Suppose I want to edit the website locally so it wont affect the site live, and suppose I edit a whole bunch of files, and I don't want to deal with the hassle of keeping track of which files I've edited all the time... Once I finished editing I want to upload it to the server via FTP....is there some FTP software that automatically detects which files have been edited and have only those files uploaded and overwritten rather than having me manually choosing the files I've edited (and hence having to keep track of edited files) or have me upload the entire site which is a waste of time thanks in advance

  I need FTP on my local LAN so my scanner can send me scans. I am on Debian sid. I installed ftpd and created the user anonymous. I removed anonymous from /etc/ftpusers When I try to login as anonymous it says: login failed. I can't seem to find any log file. I'm using FTP server (Version 6.4/OpenBSD/Linux-ftpd-0.17) update:I needed that so my printer had one place to store my scanned documents on the LAN. solved that buying a dedicated USB pen drive (thankfully I bought a printer one with plenty of options) but in the past this was a very simple task. Install ftpd, specify the directory for anonymous access, and be done with it. now every ftp daemon has several layers of security and chroot in it's core... this is just crazy when all you need a place for a printer to dump files in a secured network.

For one domain hosted on that server he needs access to a "dev" directory and for a different domain hosted on that server he needs access to a different directory. I am trying to set this up with VirtualHosts, but I am having issues. Here is the VirtualHost bit of my proftpd.conf file: <VirtualHost www.example2.com> ServerName "Example 2" DefaultRoot /var/www/example2/dev </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost www.example1.com> ServerName "Example 1" DefaultServer on DefaultRoot /var/www/example1 </VirtualHost> When I FTP to either domain I always get the first VirtualHost, even if I FTP to the second domain.

  I've a database of more than 20Gb of size on my hard disk. What is the best way to upload it with the least (money) load possible on the server? - I'm on Windows 7. - I have FTP and SSH access on the server. I avoid using FTP because my connection cuts off a lot, I can't imagine I re-upload again the file after failing on 99%. I found some tools that split the large .sql file to small .sql files, but they didn't mention how to gather these files again into one file. Another way is to archive the big .sql file to .rar with -v option, upload them through FTP then unpack them. But unpacking will also cost, right? I know it will cost in any cases, but any best practice will be strongly appreciated.

• Emacs: Prevent TRAMP connection closing

  I'm using emacs with TRAMP ( C-x C-f /ftp:[email protected]:/ ), and randomly, sometimes ten minutes, sometimes, ~12 seconds (no exaggerating) my connection will close (I think). I'll try to type, or list a dir, and it will say "Opening FTP connection to site.com...". Is there a way to tell it to just keep the connection open until I exit? Or is it the webserver killing the connection? I'm just using standard FTP. Thanks.

• Ubuntu web server 11.10 ftp/server issue

  I was wondering if I could get some help with FTP, atleast I'm pretty sure it has to do with FTP. Although it could have to do with something else, I'm not 100% sure.. Now, for fare warning, I'm no ubuntu dominator, I'm pretty newb. Anyway, I've attempted to build a webserver to to test php and what not for a site I'm building. Now everything works, the php, the sql etc. By the way, I built this in VMware, so it's virtual, over a network, so I can access stuff from anywhere. I'm in a college right now so yeah. The one problem I have is this. I go into the terminal, and do ifconfig to find my IP. I get it and go to a browser on a different machine and type that IP in. I get the "index of/" page, where I can browse the website I'm making. I can click through folders and what not. I can click on things and they open up. Now lets say I'm working on my desktop and open up an FTP and drag and drop something into there, go to the IP in the browser again and try to open it. I either get "Server error The website encountered an error while retrieving http://my_server_ip/phpinfo.php. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly. Here are some suggestions: Reload this webpage later." or "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /html.html on this server." But, lets say I make it on the server itself, and try, bam, magic it works. I'm sure I set the permissions to let everyone open and view the files, but maybe I didn't? I'm not sure, and this is where I was hoping I could get some help. By the way, I followed a tutorial on changing the www folder (apache) from /var/www to home/"user"/www. I can't recall how I did that, but it's there and my ftp goes to the home/"user"/www folder. But yeah, any and all help is appreciated. Like I said, I'm really new to this, but I do enjoy attempting to make these servers and learning how they work, so it's not like making this webserver is a project for a class, It's just assisting me in testing stuff for another class and possibly other websites later on down the road. • HTC ActiveSync contacts sync problem

  I'm trying to sync my HTC Desire (HTC Sense, ActiveSync, Android 2.1) phone with an Exchange server over the internet. Everything seems to be working just fine except that contacts already in the phone does not sync to the Exchange server. If I add a contact in Exchange it appears in the phone and if I remove that contact in the phone it disappears in Exchange. Seems I'm missing something trivial here or is it just not possible?

• Alternative to Outlook 2007 to sync with BlackBerry?

  Hello I installed Outlook (2007) since it's the most used PIM that can sync with a BlackBerry, but I find its UI ugly, and the different dialogs contain way too much items for my use. Does someone know of a good alternative? Ideally, it should be able to sync with BlackBerry directly, but I can live with one that goes through Outlook for synchronization. FWIW, I prefer desktop applications to eg. Google apps. Thank you.
