  I am installing a Server @home to manage the mac client's of my family. First I wanted to make time machine Backups over the internal network to an external Hard-drive which is connected to my Mac OS X Server (10.6) but when I read about the mobile accounts and it's synchronization features I got a little bit irritated what the differences between the two Services are. So where are the differences between a mobile account and a Time Machine Backup which is made over the network? Can the synchronized mobile Account be backup to an external Harddisk, if yes, how?

• Unresponsive virtual OS

  Hopefully someone has a suggestion on how to resolve this. Configuration Host: Win 2003R2 w/Virtual Server 2005R2 Virtual1: Win 2003R2 w/Sql Server 2005 Virtual2: Win 2003R2 w/WSS 3.0 Situation This past weekend the power went out and took down the servers (no UPS, it's a desktop standing in as dev testing server). Since the servers went down the Virtual2 server after running WSS fairly heavily for an hour to two will become unresponsive via HTTP. If I login via virtual server's remote control I don't get anything beyond a background screen. The CPU counter on the virtual server's master status shows that it isn't doing anything. The only thing I have been able to do is to turn off Virtual2, which loses any state changes. Shutdown commands issue from the virtual server master status are ignored. After restarting Virtual2 the event logs and application logs don't indicate what caused the problem. Anyone have an idea as to how to repair the OS, or maybe what could be the problem?   I have some filename with some Unicode character in it. All filenames on Mac OS X are UTF8 encoded. Also $LANG is set to en_US.UTF-8. • OS X Terminal using default ANSI colours for every theme

  For some reason, every theme I palette I've had installed for the OS X Terminal.app has reverted to using the default ANSI colours. The themes have been working fine up until this point and I can't seem to determine what could have caused them to revert in this way. For reference, my standard Solarized Dark colour scheme should look like this … … but it currently looks like this: A quick look in the preferences panel shows that all the colours are correct save for the ANSI colours which have reverted to their defaults. I don't know what other information would be helpful but if you need any other info to help me troubleshoot just ask and I'll update as quickly as I can.

• Install multiple PHP environments on OS X Snow Leopard

  I just upgraded my MBP to Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), which took PHP to 5.3 This is great, except I use my MBP as my development machine and I use a lot of PHP libs and frameworks (namely CakePHP 1.2) which are not compatible at the moment with PHP 5.3. CakePHP in particular does not have a stable version for PHP 5.3 so its not a matter of upgrading the framework (and the production servers are under PHP 5.2 anyway.) Is there a way to install PHP 5.2.9 alongside PHP 5.3 and then using httpd.conf or .htaccess tell Apache which version of PHP to use for a particular directory? Alternatively is there a way to do this with MacPorts? Thanks!

• OS X can't resolve localhost suddenly

  Last week I fired up a website that I'm currently developing locally only to find out that it wasn't working as it was the night before, (or at all). After an inital stage of panic and 'what did I do' moments... I deduced the problem down to the fact that my OS X now wont resolve localhost properly, so connections to my SQL database were failing. I can still ping localhost in the terminal, but in order to get my websites up and running again, I had to change all the localhost entries to 127.0.0.1 This isn't a huge problem as everything is up and running again, but I would like to try to get to the bottom of it. I have a sneaking suspicion that an apple software update caused this issue, as I don't recall doing anything else that would have had any effect. Other than my hosts file (which looks normal), what else could be causing this? Running OSX 10.6.4

• Mac OS X 10.6.5 and link-local addresses (169.254.x.x)

  Starting with the latest update of Mac OS X (10.6.5) all Apple applications (Safari, Mail, iChat, etc.) don't connect to the internet anymore, if the assigned IP address is from the 169.254.0.0./16 range. This is not a routing problem, I can still ping any server I want, even connecting via command line tools works. I know this problem could easily be fixed by changing the IP address to a more common RFC1918 address (e.g. 192.168.0.0./16), but this is what the ISP assigns via DHCP and I am not sure I can convince them (Xplornet) to change that. So I am wondering if there's a (hidden?) setting that would convince Apple applications, that they are in fact still online.

• How are thumbnails stored on Mac OS X?

  I have noticed that thumbnails on Mac OS X don't seem to be generated every time I open a folder, but to be somehow "cached" instead. I wasn't able, however, to find a folder where they clearly look to be stored. I thought then they could be saved as some kind of metadata; i found, however, that when deleting a file (e.g. from the Desktop) and saving immediately after a file by the same name, the preview for the previous file is showed for ~ a second. Are they stored separately from data? How and when are they invalidated (e.g. only when a file by the same name appears in the same directory)?

• Alternative terminal emulators for OS X

  This might sound ridiculous, but my eyes are tired of looking at the crappy font rendering in OS X's Terminal.app, is there anything you guys recommend? I know it's like one of those things that you can easily say, "It's shell! what more can you ask for!" but really, all these great methods for rendering fonts and anti-aliasing, and we developers haven't even integrated that into our most trusty tool... at least that I know of. Anyhow, let's discus shell alternatives, thoughts?

  Trying to look at some of our older log files and find they're cryptic "Unix Executable Files".   I was following a tutorial which had this command to create a launchd.conf file in /etc/ sudo echo "some command" /etc/launchd.conf But it wouldn't work, I got permission denied after entering my admin password. Before answering: sudo rm -rf /whateverthetimemachineis does not work Disabling the ACL permissions first with sudo fsaclctl -p /whatever -d does not work, sudo: fsaclctl: command not found Use the delete all backup feature in Time Machine... this is slow as hell, would take days. Need a command line solution. No I don't want to reformat the drive, I have other content on it, and no don't say I should have separated on two partition or two drives, I did it this say since partitions cannot be dynamically changed, and two drives is annoying since, whats the point of having a big drive?... plus has no relation to the issue at hand. Already googlied for hours and read everything on Super User, nothing working. and all solutions are the first 4. Any clues?

  I want to install Linux Mint, and Ubuntu on my laptop using Wubi installation. I already installed Ubuntu, but when I launch the Wubi installer for Mint. I got this guy: Does it mean to say that I can only install one os using the wubi? Do you know of any solution to this problem, except by installing mint using the usual way. I have XP and Windows 7 installed on the machine. That's why I'm using Wubi so that I won't get into troubles.

• OS X Login Authentication Against Leopard Server

  I am doing a few tests with OS X Server before I have to do a deploy in a few months. I have configured Open Directory, and created a few users. I've configured Directory Utility on a 10.5 client, but the login authentication doesn't work the way I would expect. I would expect I could user a username/password from any user created in Open Directory and be able to log into the client. Instead, it appears I need to create a local user, which you then sync with a directory user using Directory Utility. Alternatively, if I add an Active Directory config to the client, I can use any AD user, as I would expect. Am I hoping for the impossible, or is something likely wrong with the configuration?

  I upgraded my Mac with OS X Mavericks last week. It appears to have taken away support for Sqlite -- not Sqlite3, but sqlite. I need that for a website I work on. I went to Sqlite's website, but all I could find was older versions of Sqlite3. Where can I find a version of Sqlite? I've been through the php.ini and can only find one reference to sqlite. In short, how do I get Sqlite support on my Mac? I have Sqlite3 enabled and the issue isn't going away. I uncommented pdo_sqlite in the php.ini and I still have the issue.

  So i have a computer that has 2 hard drives and i installed Ubuntu server on it. I used LVM to connect the two. So i tried to put windows back on it but it failed because it said it couldn't position the drive and then when i booted again the OS couldn't be found. So i booted it with the Ubuntu setup disc but now when it goes to partition it says that the position can not be modified because its already in use. I am asking if there is a way i can just remove everything and start fresh?

  I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses. • Set resolution of unattached display in OS X?

  I have an HDTV that I'm hooking up via DVI to HDMI from my Mac mini. In my struggle to eliminate overscan I managed to set the screen resolution to something not supported by the tv. How do I change the resolution without that screen attached? Specifically my tv says it's "720p and 1366 x 768 Resolution". The 720p resolution option in OS X made for a ton of overscan (couldn't see menubar or dock at all). So I tried something x 768 and managed to shoot myself in the foot with an unsupported resolution. I thought it was okay to experiment since a resolution change times out if you don't accept it. Apparently that didn't happen for some reason. I've already deleted the com.apple.windowserver.plist in /Library/Preferences as I saw suggested in other places, with no effect.

I use these keys all the time (switching tabs in terminal, IntelliJ primarily), and it's driving me crazy. On one user account, it works fine. On the other, it doesn't. This happened today and nothing significant comes to mind that would have caused some weird keybinding issue. • Terminal mail delivery delay in Mac OS X

  I'm using mail from the Mac OS X terminal to send the results of a database query to me via email. Most of the time it works, but sometimes there is a long delay before the mail arrives (often when another similar script is run). It looks like there is some kind of send queue, but I can't find any documentation mentioning this. Is there something I need to do to flush mail from the terminal? UPDATE: Sometimes delivery doesn't even seem to happen, though I get no errors at the console. Very weird.

• DRAC for remote OS install w/o Virtual Media

  I have a few DELL servers in a remote DC and our ISP has been very kind about doing OS installs for us. However, as we move to Production and multiple DC's I'd like to be able to do the installs/re-installs internally and DRAC Enterprise w/SDRAM seems ideal. My question is, how do you get your install ISO's on to the SDRAM? Can I just copy it from a local DVD (temp USB hookup) or FTP? What's the advantage to the SDRAM over just buying a USB dongle (to leave plugged into the server) and installing a bootable install ISO? We're a virtual org generally using DSL (2mb) connections to the DC over the Internet and using 'Virtual Media' isn't viable for us.

  I have Ubuntu & Windows 7 installed on my hdd. Can I mirror the image of the hdd to the second identical drive? Is this not recommended (i.e have to re-install every OS)? If it is okay to mirror, is there anything else to do to make hw RAID 0 work? Does RAID 0 have the same risk as a single drive? What sector size would you recommend for read/write/extract video files (mostly each around 2 GB)?

• Changing keyboard layout for login screen on Mac OS X

  I have a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Lion. Basically I am a developer and practiced coding with DVORAK keyboards. So I changed my keyboard layout to DVORAK and I'm working with it. I'm using the admin user on my Mac Mini. When I restart my computer, during login, the layout is changed to QWERTY and it's hard to type the password. It happens only for the admin user though. If I create the another user and set the layout as DVORAK and restart, that user has the DVORAK keyboard for login. Note: I have a QWERTY keyboard, I'm only changing the layout in the keyboard preferences. So, to summarize, how can I get the DVORAK keyboard layout for the admin login as well?
