  • Here's what I want... what do I tell my IT guy I need?

    I work in the graphics department for a real estate brokerage, and we deal with a lot of photos. Agents take the photos, upload them to me, I touch up and standardize the photos, then I add them to an in-house server for future use by the graphics dept. I'd like to make the "sanitized" photo files available to the agents to use when they want, but I don't want the agents poking around the graphics department's files (things get misplaced, renamed and messed up in a hurry). What would be perfect is if we could create a read-only "mirror" (correct term?) of that server that could be accessed by the agents as needed, but which wouldn't feed back into our "sanitized" file system. What do I tell the office IT guy I need (platform-agnostically, because I don't know what he's running)? I never get to see him face-to-face, so I've got to word this as carefully and explicitly as possible. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for your feedback

  • How do I delete the next line in vim?

    In emacs, whenever I want to delete a few lines of text, I just use C-k until all the text is gone. However, in vim it seems a bit more complex. I know I can do d$ to delete until the end of the line and dd to delete the entire line I'm on, but how do I delete all of the next line?

  • HDD Carrier, like a soda carrier available at McDonalds?

    We use external USB drives for backups, and they have to be stored offsite at the end of the week. Right now we have your standard external USB drive inside an enclosure. We were thinking about moving to a USB dock, and dock a bare HDD for backups, rather than having various sized and types of enclosures. If we were to do this, the drives need protection while being transported to/from the safety deposit box. Is there any kind of hard drive carrier that would let us slide two drives into it, and it would provide protection while the drives are carried around by non-technical people? I'm afraid such a product doesn't exist, but perhaps someone knows of something?

  • Blade servers for vm?

    We're using VMware on a normal rack mounted server and considering getting another. I see these days I can pick blade enclosures and servers up for relatively low cost and see the term blade and vm mentioned quite a lot. So my question - how would a blade setup work with wmware - is the whole enclosure seen as one big machine and yhr more blades you add the more computing power/resources you get in VMware - or are the just x number of seperate servers? J

  • TempDB is Full Issue for SQL Server 2000

    Even though the log file shows that there is over 1 GB of free space, we start receiving an error message every 3 or 4 days saying that the TempDB file is full. I know cursors impact the TempDB file, but is there anything else I should be looking at to see why this keeps happening? I've tried running SQL Profiler, but when running it, it slowed down the DB so much that the users were experiencing timeouts. What specific items should I check for in SQL Profiler?

  • linux hardware raid 10 / lvm / virtual machine partition alignment and filesystem optimization

    I've been reading everything I can find about partition alignment and filesystem optimization (ext4 and xfs) but still don't know enough to be confident in setting up my current configuration. My remaining confusion comes from the LVM layer and if I should use raid parameters on the filesystem in guest os'es. My main questions are: When I use 'pvcreate --dataalignment' do I use the stripe-width as calculated for a filesystem on RAID (128kB for ext4 in my situation), the Stripe size of the RAID set (256kB), something else altogether, or do I not need this? When I create ext2/3/4 or xfs filesystems in guests on the Logical Volumes, should I add the settings for the underlying RAID (e.g. mkfs.ext4 -b 4096 -E stride=64,stripe-width=128)? Does anyone see any glaring errors in my set up below? I'm running some benchmarks now but haven't done enough to start comparing results. I have four drives in RAID 10 on a 3ware 9750-4i controller (more details on the settings below) giving me a 6.0TB device at /dev/sda. Here is my partition table: Model: LSI 9750-4i DISK (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 5722024MiB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 1.00MiB 257MiB 256MiB ext4 BOOTPART boot 2 257MiB 4353MiB 4096MiB linux-swap(v1) 3 4353MiB 266497MiB 262144MiB ext4 4 266497MiB 4460801MiB 4194304MiB Partition 1 is to be the /boot partition for my xen host. I know there are other ways of handling that but this method works best for my situation.   • Cisco Unity Connection 7 and Exchange 2010 Unified Messaging

Is anyone aware of any whitepaper/document/tutorial or other that they'd recommend we look into? We can't seem to find much.   • HTTP 400 error for all websites

    A couple of days ago, I started getting HTTP 400 responses from all websites. Nothing will go across port 80. However, everything works if I connect to VPN. The weird thing is, without VPN, other things still work; such as IM and anything else that doesn’t use port 80. Pinging also works. I haven’t noticed this behavior on any other computer on my network. The kicker is, if I log on as a local admin, everything works fine!!! I haven’t installed anything in the last couple weeks and I don’t remember changing any configuration. I ran Forefront and HouseCall and neither found any problems.

  • Input not supported message when monitor is powered off then back on

    I've been getting a message on my monitor where "Input not supported" is floating around. This only happens when I manually turn the monitor off and then later turn it back on. Leaving the monitor on and allowing it to go to the screen saver doesn't seem to cause the issue (but I prefer to turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away from the computer for any length of time). Any ideas what might cause this, only when the monitor is turned off manually?   • Stability, x86 Vs Sparc

    Our project are plan to migrate from Sparc to x86, and our HA requirement is 99.99%, previous on Sparc, we assume the hardware stability would like, hardware failure every 4 month or even one year, and also we have test data for our application, then we have requirement for each unplanned recovery (fail over) to achieve 99.99% (52.6 minutes unplanned downtime per year). But since we are going to use Intel x86, it seems the hardware stability is not so good as Sparc, but we don't have the detail data. So compare with Sparc, how about the stability of the Intel x86, should we assume we have more unplanned downtime? If so, how many, double? Where I can find some more detail of this two type of hardware?

  • How do I make compiling code not bring my system to its knees?

    I have a macbook with snow leopard and 2 gigs of RAM. When I compile C or C++ code, my system becomes all but unusable. For instance, when I compile llvm I notice that there are about 10 or 11 processes (cc1plus) getting launched at a time that suck up my CPU time and memory. Is there any way to maybe make it compile less at one time? I'll gladly wait a while longer to have my system usable while I'm compiling. Or is this something that you just have to live with when compiling C or C++?

    I have a soundcard in my new PC at work that does not have the right driver installed, and I'm not sure what the manufacturer is. (it's a generic PC running Windows XP) Is there a way to figure out what device it is w/o having to open the thing up or pester my IT department?   • KVM and JBoss Java Application Server

    We have a large Xen deployment running on both RHEL and CentOS and have recently started looking at KVM since this is where it looks like the future of VM's are on Linux. We can load the server and get everything running without an issue. However when we load up a new one with JBoss (4.2 Community edition, Sun JDK 6) and load a large EAR the server goes a little crazy. The %sy will jump to 80-99% and just hang for large periods of time we see a similar jump in %us on the host machine. We though at first this might be I/O as it seems to happen at start of JBoss but then would "cool down" after everything got loaded. We did some tests by extracting some large tar.gz files and using jar -xvf on the ear but could not re-create. Then we starting thinking this might be some type of memory access issues. We loaded a c-program that would generate a lot of memory activity and sure enough we saw the spikes again. Not as high mind you but we did see it jump. We then wrote a small java program to do the same thing and sure enough we saw it jump again. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Is this just the way KVM works? As a side note we do NOT see this behavior on any other setup. Xen, VMWare and/or native iron. The system does seem a bit slower than our Xen / VMware ones.

I just spent 2 hrs learning bits and pieces of Dia only to find that it has no rotational capabilities, not even 90 degree rotations. Otherwise it's great. Any suggestions?

  • Exchange Cached Mode (Exchange 2010) with Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2010 Causing Sync Issues

    We have Exchange 2010 and a mix of Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2010 clients. When Exchange Cached Mode is enabled, clients are receiving sync issues. In Outlook 2010, the sync issues are mainly with the Deleted Items. In Outlook 2003, they are mainly around the Offline Address Book. When Exchange Cached Mode is disabled, the clients notice a 3 second delay in deleting email in list view within the Inbox. Anyway that these two issues can be resolved? It's a big pain especially to the frustrated end users. TIA!!!!

  • Slow Query log for just one database

    can I enable the slow query log specifically for just one database? What I've done currently is to take the entire log into excel and then run a pivot report to work out which database is the slowest. So i've gone and done some changes to that application in the hope of reducing the slow query occurence. rather than running my pivot report again which took a bit of time to cleanse the data i'd rather just output slow queries from the one database possible?

  • How do I use long names to refer to Group Managed Service Accounts (gMSA)?

    Commonly domain user accounts are used as service accounts. With domain user accounts, the username can easily be as long as 64 characters as long as the User Principal Name (UPN) is used to refer to the account, eg [email protected]. If you still use the legacy pre-Windows 2000 names (SAM) you have to truncate it to ~20 characters, eg mydomain\truncname. When using the New-ADServiceAccount PowerShell cmdlet to create a new Group Managed Service Account (gMSA) and a name longer than 15 characters is specified, an error is returned. To specify a longer name, the SAM name must be specified separately, eg: New-ADServiceAccount -Name longname -SamAccountName truncname ... To configure a service to run as the new gMSA, I can use the legacy username format mydomain\truncname$ but using usernames with a maximum of 15 characters in 2013 is a smell. How do I refer to a gMSA using the UPN-style format instead? I tried the longname$@domainfqdn approach but that didn't work. It also seems that the gMSA object in AD doesn't have a userPrincipalName attribute value specified.

  • Messages fail to deliver when sending out a mass email

    A client of mine sent out a mass email to a bunch of people on his contact list. A bounceback email was received by my client stating that: "The server has tried to deliver this message, without success, and has stopped trying. Please try sending this message again. If the problem continues, contact your helpdesk." That error is associated with every recipient in that mass email. Any ideas on where to look to resolve this? He is able to send and recieve other emails normally.
