  • jQuery multiple if else Statements

    - by Chris MMgr
    I have a set of images that I am trying to activate (change opacity) based on the position of a user's window. The below code works, but only through a long series of if else statements. Is there a way to shorten the below code? //Function to activate and deactivate the buttons on the side menu function navIndicator() { var winNow = $(window).scrollTop(); var posRoi = $('#roi').offset(); var posRoiNow = posRoi.top; //Activate the propper button corresponding to what section the user is viewing if (winNow == posRoiNow * 0) { $('#homeBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 1 } { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#homeBut').addClass("viewing") } else { $('#homeBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 0 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#homeBut').removeClass("viewing") } if (winNow == posRoiNow) { $('#roiBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 1 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#roiBut').addClass("viewing") } else { $('#roiBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 0 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#roiBut').removeClass("viewing") } if (winNow == posRoiNow * 2) { $('#dmsBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 1 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#dmsBut').addClass("viewing") } else { $('#dmsBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 0 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#dmsBut').removeClass("viewing") } if (winNow == posRoiNow * 3) { $('#techBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 1 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#techBut').addClass("viewing") } else { $('#techBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 0 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#techBut').removeClass("viewing") } if (winNow == posRoiNow * 4) { $('#impBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 1 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#impBut').addClass("viewing") } else { $('#impBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 0 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#impBut').removeClass("viewing") } if (winNow == posRoiNow * 5) { $('#virBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 1 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#virBut').addClass("viewing") } else { $('#virBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 0 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#virBut').removeClass("viewing") } if (winNow == posRoiNow * 6) { $('#biBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 1 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#biBut').addClass("viewing") } else { $('#biBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 0 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#biBut').removeClass("viewing") } if (winNow == posRoiNow * 7) { $('#contBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 1 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#contBut').addClass("viewing") } else { $('#contBut a img.active').stop().animate({ opacity: 0 }, { queue: false, duration: 300, easing: "easeOutExpo" }); $('#contBut').removeClass("viewing") } };

  • Rails problem with Delayed_Job and Active Record

    - by Michael Waxman
    I'm using Delayed_Job to grab a Twitter user's data from the API, but it's not saving it in the model for some reason! Please help! (code below) class BandJob < Struct.new(:band_id, :band_username) #parameter def perform require 'json' require 'open-uri' band = Band.find_by_id(band_id) t = JSON.parse(open("http://twitter.com/users/show/#{band_username}.json").read) band.screen_name = t['screen_name'] band.profile_background_image = t['profile_background_image_url'] band.url = 'http://' + band_username + '.com' band.save! end end To clarify, I'm actually not getting any errors, it's just not saving. Here's what my log looks like: * [JOB] acquiring lock on BandJob [4;36;1mDelayed::Job Update (3.1ms)[0m [0;1mUPDATE "delayed_jobs" SET locked_at = '2009-11-09 18:59:45', locked_by = 'host:dhcp128036151228.central.yale.edu pid:2864' WHERE (id = 10442 and (locked_at is null or locked_at < '2009-11-09 14:59:45') and (run_at <= '2009-11-09 18:59:45')) [0m [4;35;1mBand Load (1.5ms)[0m [0mSELECT * FROM "bands" WHERE ("bands"."id" = 34) LIMIT 1[0m [4;36;1mBand Update (0.6ms)[0m [0;1mUPDATE "bands" SET "updated_at" = '2009-11-09 18:59:45', "profile_background_image" = 'http://a3.twimg.com/profile_background_images/38193417/fbtile4.jpg', "url" = 'http://Coldplay.com', "screen_name" = 'coldplay' WHERE "id" = 34[0m [4;35;1mDelayed::Job Destroy (0.5ms)[0m [0mDELETE FROM "delayed_jobs" WHERE "id" = 10442[0m * [JOB] BandJob completed after 0.5448 1 jobs processed at 1.8011 j/s, 0 failed ...   • getting a job in game industry as a developer, just knowing a game engine

    - by numerical25
    I recently enrolled at a community college for game developement. But I am skeptical about the circulum. I have no experience in the gaming industry so I wouldnt be able to tell rather its a good investment or not. So I am asking you. I dont want to get too much into detail of all the classes I am taking so I will try to be brief. By the time I graduate, I should have a understanding of how a game engine works. I will be working with the unreal engine to develop a Multiplayer game from scratch. So in the process of my final project, I will learn how to work within the unreal engine, Learn python and learn how to use it's API to connect to a remote server and build game mechanics. Overall I will also recieve a associates degree in game development. I learn c++ but not c. The director said he was trying to implement c in the program as well. What I notice is I will not learn how to build a 3d game engine from scratch. They do not teach any AI. I will not learn how to work with the graphics card using a graphic's api such as DirectX or OpenGL. I know building a game engine from scratch is a little complex, but at the same time the track is requireing me to take some advances math courses such a calculus and geotomtry 1 and 2. I also got to take a physic class. I just think thats a little much for just learning how to use the unreal engine but not actually build one or try to learn the anatomy of a game engine. Is this good enough to possibly land my a job in the insdustry. If I left anything out or was not detail, please feel free to ask more questions. Thanks Guys!!

  • Hopping from a C++ to a Perl/Unix job

    - by rocknroll
    Hi all, I have been a C++ / Linux Developer till now and I am adept in this stack. Of late I have been getting opportunities that require Perl, Unix (with knowledge of C++,shell scripting) expertise. Organizations are showing interest even though I don't have much scripting experience to boast off. The role is more in a Support, maintenance project involving SQL as well. Off late I am in a fix whether to forgo these offers or not. I don't know the dynamics of an IT organization and thus on one hand I fear that my C++ experience will be nullified and on the positive side I am getting to work on a new technology stack which will only add to my skill set. I am sure, most of you at some point of time have encountered such dilemmas and would have taken some decision. I want you to share your perspectives on such a scenario where a person is required to change his/her technology stack when changing his/her job. What are the merits and demerits in going with either of the choices? Also I know that C++ isn't going anywhere in the near future. What about perl? I have no clue as to what the future holds for perl developer? Whether there are enough opportunities for a perl developer? I am asking this question here because most of my fellow programmers face this career choice dilemma. Thanks.

  • Android Loading listview items from service results in hang

    - by Isaac Waller
    Hello, In my Android application, I have a ListActivity. This ListActivity uses a SimpleAdapter that I fill with items from my service. So, in my code, I do: MySuperCoolService.Binder serviceBinder = null; private ServiceConnection serviceConnection = new ServiceConnection() { public void onServiceConnected(ComponentName className, IBinder service) { Log.d(TAG, "Service connection: connected!"); serviceBinder = (MySuperCoolService.Binder)service; } public void onServiceDisconnected(ComponentName className) { Log.d(TAG, "Service connection: disconnected"); serviceBinder = null; } }; bindService(new Intent(this, MySuperCoolService.class), serviceConnection, BIND_AUTO_CREATE); while(serviceBinder==null) { Thread.Sleep(1000); } // now retrieve from service using binder and set list adapter This whole operation takes hardly any time (less than a second), so I want it to run in the UI thread. See my onCreate: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); fillDataUsingCodeAbove(); } The reason I want this to run in the UI thread is that if you have a list item selected, or you have scrolled to a certain position in the ListView, and you rotate the device or take out the keyboard or something (to trigger a configuration change) when my activity is restarted, Android will try to restore the state right after onCreate. But, if I run it in a separate thread, it will not. Also there is a cool fadein animation too :) The problem I am having with running it in the UI thread is that when I try to bind to the service, that service bind request gets put onto the message queue. But then when I go into my loop, I stop the message queue from looping. So my program hangs, because it's waiting for the service to get bound, and the service won't get bound until the loop ends. I have thought of putting Looper.loop() inside my loop, but that just hangs it at Looper.loop() (I don't know why.) Sorry for such a long question, Isaac Waller

  • Perl cron job stays running

    - by Dylan
    I'm currently using a cron job to have a Perl script that tells my Arduino to cycle my aquaponics system and all is well, except the Perl script doesn't die as intended. Here is my cron job: */15 * * * * /home/dburke/scripts/hal/bin/main.pl cycle And below is my Perl script: #!/usr/bin/perl -w # Sample Perl script to transmit number # to Arduino then listen for the Arduino # to echo it back use strict; use Device::SerialPort; use Switch; use Time::HiRes qw ( alarm ); $|++; # Set up the serial port # 19200, 81N on the USB ftdi driver my $device = '/dev/arduino0'; # Tomoc has to use a different tty for testing #$device = '/dev/ttyS0'; my $port = new Device::SerialPort ($device) or die('Unable to open connection to device');; $port->databits(8); $port->baudrate(19200); $port->parity("none"); $port->stopbits(1); my $lastChoice = ' '; my $pid = fork(); my $signalOut; my $args = shift(@ARGV); # Parent must wait for child to exit before exiting itself on CTRL+C $SIG{'INT'} = sub { waitpid($pid,0) if $pid != 0; exit(0); }; # What child process should do if($pid == 0) { # Poll to see if any data is coming in print "\nListening...\n\n"; while (1) { my $incmsg = $port->lookfor(9); # If we get data, then print it if ($incmsg) { print "\nFrom arduino: " . $incmsg . "\n\n"; } } } # What parent process should do else { if ($args eq "cycle") { my $stop = 0; sleep(1); $SIG{ALRM} = sub { print "Expecting plant bed to be full; please check.\n"; $signalOut = $port->write('2'); # Signal to set pin 3 low print "Sent cmd: 2\n"; $stop = 1; }; $signalOut = $port->write('1'); # Signal to arduino to set pin 3 High print "Sent cmd: 1\n"; print "Waiting for plant bed to fill...\n"; alarm (420); while ($stop == 0) { sleep(2); } die "Done."; } else { sleep(1); my $choice = ' '; print "Please pick an option you'd like to use:\n"; while(1) { print " [1] Cycle [2] Relay OFF [3] Relay ON [4] Config [$lastChoice]: "; chomp($choice = <STDIN>); switch ($choice) { case /1/ { $SIG{ALRM} = sub { print "Expecting plant bed to be full; please check.\n"; $signalOut = $port->write('2'); # Signal to set pin 3 low print "Sent cmd: 2\n"; }; $signalOut = $port->write('1'); # Signal to arduino to set pin 3 High print "Sent cmd: 1\n"; print "Waiting for plant bed to fill...\n"; alarm (420); $lastChoice = $choice; } case /2/ { $signalOut = $port->write('2'); # Signal to set pin 3 low print "Sent cmd: 2"; $lastChoice = $choice; } case /3/ { $signalOut = $port->write('1'); # Signal to arduino to set pin 3 High print "Sent cmd: 1"; $lastChoice = $choice; } case /4/ { print "There is no configuration available yet. Please stab the developer."; } else { print "Please select a valid option.\n\n"; } } } } } Why wouldn't it die from the statement die "Done.";? It runs fine from the command line and also interprets the 'cycle' argument fine. When it runs in cron it runs fine, however, the process never dies and while each process doesn't continue to cycle the system it does seem to be looping in some way due to the fact that it ups my system load very quickly. If you'd like more information, just ask. EDIT: I have changed to code to: #!/usr/bin/perl -w # Sample Perl script to transmit number # to Arduino then listen for the Arduino # to echo it back use strict; use Device::SerialPort; use Switch; use Time::HiRes qw ( alarm ); $|++; # Set up the serial port # 19200, 81N on the USB ftdi driver my $device = '/dev/arduino0'; # Tomoc has to use a different tty for testing #$device = '/dev/ttyS0'; my $port = new Device::SerialPort ($device) or die('Unable to open connection to device');; $port->databits(8); $port->baudrate(19200); $port->parity("none"); $port->stopbits(1); my $lastChoice = ' '; my $signalOut; my $args = shift(@ARGV); # Parent must wait for child to exit before exiting itself on CTRL+C if ($args eq "cycle") { open (LOG, '>>log.txt'); print LOG "Cycle started.\n"; my $stop = 0; sleep(2); $SIG{ALRM} = sub { print "Expecting plant bed to be full; please check.\n"; $signalOut = $port->write('2'); # Signal to set pin 3 low print "Sent cmd: 2\n"; $stop = 1; }; $signalOut = $port->write('1'); # Signal to arduino to set pin 3 High print "Sent cmd: 1\n"; print "Waiting for plant bed to fill...\n"; print LOG "Alarm is being set.\n"; alarm (420); print LOG "Alarm is set.\n"; while ($stop == 0) { print LOG "In while-sleep loop.\n"; sleep(2); } print LOG "The loop has been escaped.\n"; die "Done."; print LOG "No one should ever see this."; } else { my $pid = fork(); $SIG{'INT'} = sub { waitpid($pid,0) if $pid != 0; exit(0); }; # What child process should do if($pid == 0) { # Poll to see if any data is coming in print "\nListening...\n\n"; while (1) { my $incmsg = $port->lookfor(9); # If we get data, then print it if ($incmsg) { print "\nFrom arduino: " . $incmsg . • Recycle Freed Objects

    - by uray
    suppose I need to allocate and delete object on heap frequently (of arbitrary size), is there any performance benefit if instead of deleting those objects, I will return it back to some "pool" to be reused later? would it give benefit by reduce heap allocation/deallocation?, or it will be slower compared to memory allocator performance, since the "pool" need to manage a dynamic collection of pointers. my use case: suppose I create a queue container based on linked list, and each node of that list are allocated on the heap, so every call to push() and pop() will allocate and deallocate that node: ` template <typename T> struct QueueNode { QueueNode<T>* next; T object; } template <typename T> class Queue { void push(T object) { QueueNode<T>* newNode = QueueNodePool<T>::get(); //get recycled node if(!newNode) { newNode = new QueueNode<T>(object); } // push newNode routine here.. } T pop() { //pop routine here... QueueNodePool<T>::store(unusedNode); //recycle node return unusedNode->object; } } `

  • How would you start automating my job?

    - by Jurily
    At my new job, we sell imported stuff. In order to be able to sell said stuff, currently the following things need to happen for every incoming shipment: Invoice arrives, in the form of an email attachment, Excel spreadsheet Monkey opens invoice, copy-pastes the relevant part of three columns into the relevant parts of a spreadsheet template, where extremely complex calculations happen, like =B2*550 Monkey sends this new spreadsheet to boss (email if lucky, printer otherwise), who sets the retail price Monkey opens the reply, then proceeds to input the data into the production database using a client program that is unusable on so many levels it's not even worth detailing Monkey fires up HyperTerminal, types in "AT", disconnect Monkey sends text messages and emails to customers using another part of the horrible client program, one at a time I want to change Monkey from myself to software wherever possible. I've never written anything that interfaces with email, Excel, databases or SMS before, but I'd be more than happy to learn if it saves me from this. Here's my uneducated wishlist: Monkey asks Thunderbird (mail server perhaps?) for the attachment Monkey tells Excel to dump the spreadsheet into a more Jurily-friendly format, like CSV or something Monkey parses the output, does the complex calculations // TODO: find a way to get the boss-generated prices with minimal manual labor involved Monkey connects to the database, inserts data Monkey spams costumers Is all this feasible? If yes, where do I start reading? How would you improve it? What language/framework do you think would be ideal for this? What would you do about the boss?

  • Best practices for (over)using Azure queues

    - by John
    Hi, I'm in the early phases of designing an Azure-based application. One of the things that attracts me to Azure is the scalability, given the variability of the demand I'm likely to expect. As such I'm trying to keep things loosely coupled so I can add instances when I need to. The recommendations I've seen for architecting an application for Azure include keeping web role logic to a minimum, and having processing done in worker roles, using queues to communicate and some sort of back-end store like SQL Azure or Azure Tables. This seems like a good idea to me as I can scale up either or both parts of the application without any issue. However I'm curious if there are any best practices (or if anyone has any experiences) for when it's best to just have the web role talk directly to the data store vs. sending data by the queue? I'm thinking of the case where I have a simple insert to do from the web role - while I could set this up as a message, send it on the queue, and have a worker role pick it up and do the insert, it seems like a lot of double-handling. However I also appreciate that it may be the case that this is better in the long run, in case the web role gets overwhelmed or more complex logic ends up being required for the insert. I realise this might be a case where the answer is "it depends entirely on the situation, check your perf metrics" - but if anyone has any thoughts I'd be very appreciative! Thanks John

  • Consequent attribute calculations with a queuing system

    - by vrinek
    For all of the following assume these: rails v3.0 ruby v1.9 resque We have 3 models: Product belongs_to :sku, belongs_to :category Sku has_many :products, belongs_to :category Category has_many :products, has_many :skus When we update the product (let's say we disable it) we need to have some things happen to the relevant sku and category. The same is true for when a sku is updated. The proper way of achieving this is have an after_save on each model that triggers the other models' update events. example: products.each(&:disable!) # after_save triggers self.sku.products_updated # and self.category.products_updated (self is product) Now if we have 5000 products we are in for a treat. The same category might get updated hundreds of times and hog the database while doing so. We also have a nice queueing system, so the more realisting way of updating products would be products.each(&:queue_disable!) which would simply toss 5000 new tasks to the working queue. The problem of 5000 category updates still exists though. Is there a way to avoid all those updates on the db? How can we concatenate all the category.products_updated for each category in the queue?

  • How to read from multiple queues in real-world?

    - by Leon Cullens
    Here's a theoretical question: When I'm building an application using message queueing, I'm going to need multiple queues support different data types for different purposes. Let's assume I have 20 queues (e.g. one to create new users, one to process new orders, one to edit user settings, etc.). I'm going to deploy this to Windows Azure using the 'minimum' of 1 web role and 1 worker role. How does one read from all those 20 queues in a proper way? This is what I had in mind, but I have little or no real-world practical experience with this: Create a class that spawns 20 threads in the worker role 'main' class. Let each of these threads execute a method to poll a different queue, and let all those threads sleep between each poll (of course with a back-off mechanism that increases the sleep time). This leads to have 20 threads (or 21?), and 20 queues that are being actively polled, resulting in a lot of wasted messages (each time you poll an empty queue it's being billed as a message). How do you solve this problem?

  • Should I start making connections even if I'm not ready for a job yet?

    - by James
    The first job is always the hardest to get and I'm not exception. I'm 23 years old and I have no college degree but planned on going to college this year if all goes well (CS of course). I'm self-studying java right now. I know most of the topics related to the language besides the more advanced topics and I'm beginning to look at open source projects. I would like to find a job (at least a part time job) after a year or two when I'll gain more experience and learn more about java technologies and other technologies that interest me. Finding a job will be a bit difficult because most of the people (or a lot of them at least) at my current age already have 2 years or more of experience, so I will be somewhat disadvantaged. Should I start building connections and joining websites such as linkedin ? I never bothered to look into it because I'm not much of a social network person. If I start contributing to open source projects and create personal projects for 2 years could I apply for jobs that require 1-2 years of experience? Does this experience count ?

What are the kind of challenges that a tester faces in real life situations that make his/her job more interesting and self-motivating? What are the growth opportunities for an individual in a software company who wants to pursue a career as a software tester? Are software developers and software testers treated alike in terms of growth opportunities or otherwise? If not so why? How does one(software tester or any one else) deal with such situation such that its a win win situation for both the company and the software tester? I am really looking forward to the answers that you can give from your personal experiences and insights. Thank you..:)

  • Are there any other Java schedulers besides Quartz(FOSS) and Flux(Commercial)

    - by mP
    I am interested in finding out about other job scheduling packages besides Quartz and Flux. Given the plethora of web frameworks i find it perculiar that there is really only one scheduler. Are there others that perhaps are very much unknown/unpopular ? Spring Batch Not really a scheduling solution but rather a batch job coordinator etc. http://static.springsource.org/spring-batch/faq.html#schedulers How does Spring Batch differ from Quartz? Is there a place for them both in a solution? Spring Batch and Quartz have different goals. Spring Batch provides functionality for processing large volumes of data and Quartz provides functionality for scheduling tasks. So Quartz could complement Spring Batch, but are not excluding technologies. A common combination would be to use Quartz as a trigger for a Spring Batch job using a Cron expression and the Spring Core convenience SchedulerFactoryBean .

  • Weird exception with delayed_job

    - by Tam
    Trying to queue a job with delayed_job as follows: Delayed::Job.enqueue(BackgroundProcess.new(current_user, object)) current_user and object are not nil when I print them out. The weird thing is that sometimes refreshing the page or running the command again works! Here is the exception trace: Delayed::Backend::ActiveRecord::Job Columns (44.8ms) SHOW FIELDS FROM `delayed_jobs` TypeError (wrong argument type nil (expected Data)): /Users/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/lib/ruby/1.9.1/yaml.rb:391:in `emit' /Users/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/lib/ruby/1.9.1/yaml.rb:391:in `quick_emit' /Users/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/lib/ruby/1.9.1/yaml/rubytypes.rb:86:in `to_yaml' vendor/plugins/delayed_job/lib/delayed/backend/base.rb:65:in `payload_object=' activerecord (2.3.9) lib/active_record/base.rb:2918:in `block in assign_attributes' activerecord (2.3.9) lib/active_record/base.rb:2914:in `each' activerecord (2.3.9) lib/active_record/base.rb:2914:in `assign_attributes' activerecord (2.3.9) lib/active_record/base.rb:2787:in `attributes=' activerecord (2.3.9) lib/active_record/base.rb:2477:in `initialize' activerecord (2.3.9) lib/active_record/base.rb:725:in `new' activerecord (2.3.9) lib/active_record/base.rb:725:in `create' vendor/plugins/delayed_job/lib/delayed/backend/base.rb:21:in `enqueue'

  • What is the best way to reject messages with the same body in AMQ queue?

    - by archer
    I have a single AMQ queue that receives simple messages with string body. Consider I'm sending CLSIDs as message bodies. CLSIDs could be not unique, but I'd like to reject all messages with not unique bodies and keep only single instance of such messages in the queue. Is there any simple way to do it? Currently I'm using a workaround. Messages from the queue are consumed by some processor that tries to insert bodies into a simple DB table with UNIQUE constraint applied to message_body field. If processor inserts the messages succesfuly - it's assigned to exchange.out.body and sent to other queue. If ConstraintViolationException is thrown - nothing is resent to other queue. I would like to know does AMQ support something similar out of the box?

  • Hibernate Lazy init exception in spring scheduled job

    - by Noam Nevo
    I have a spring scheduled job (@Scheduled) that sends emails from my system according to a list of recipients in the DB. This method is annotated with the @Scheduled annotation and it invokes a method from another interface, the method in the interface is annotated with the @Transactional annotation. Now, when i invoke the scheduled method manually, it works perfectly. But when the method is invoked by spring scheduler i get the LazyInitFailed exception in the method implementing the said interface. What am I doing wrong? code: The scheduled method: @Component public class ScheduledReportsSender { public static final int MAX_RETIRES = 3; public static final long HALF_HOUR = 1000 * 60 * 30; @Autowired IScheduledReportDAO scheduledReportDAO; @Autowired IDataService dataService; @Autowired IErrorService errorService; @Scheduled(cron = "0 0 3 ? * *") // every day at 2:10AM public void runDailyReports() { // get all daily reports List<ScheduledReport> scheduledReports = scheduledReportDAO.getDaily(); sendScheduledReports(scheduledReports); } private void sendScheduledReports(List<ScheduledReport> scheduledReports) { if(scheduledReports.size()<1) { return; } //check if data flow ended its process by checking the report_last_updated table in dwh int reportTimeId = scheduledReportDAO.getReportTimeId(); String todayTimeId = DateUtils.getTimeid(DateUtils.getTodayDate()); int yesterdayTimeId = Integer.parseInt(DateUtils.addDaysSafe(todayTimeId, -1)); int counter = 0; //wait for time id to update from the daily flow while (reportTimeId != yesterdayTimeId && counter < MAX_RETIRES) { errorService.logException("Daily report sender, data not ready. Will try again in one hour.", null, null, null); try { Thread.sleep(HALF_HOUR); } catch (InterruptedException ignore) {} reportTimeId = scheduledReportDAO.getReportTimeId(); counter++; } if (counter == MAX_RETIRES) { MarketplaceServiceException mse = new MarketplaceServiceException(); mse.setMessage("Data flow not done for today, reports are not sent."); throw mse; } // get updated timeid updateTimeId(); for (ScheduledReport scheduledReport : scheduledReports) { dataService.generateScheduledReport(scheduledReport); } } } The Invoked interface: public interface IDataService { @Transactional public void generateScheduledReport(ScheduledReport scheduledReport); } The implementation (up to the line of the exception): @Service public class DataService implements IDataService { public void generateScheduledReport(ScheduledReport scheduledReport) { // if no recipients or no export type - return if(scheduledReport.getRecipients()==null || scheduledReport.getRecipients().size()==0 || scheduledReport.getExportType() == null) { return; } } } Stack trace: ERROR: 2012-09-01 03:30:00,365 [Scheduler-15] LazyInitializationException.<init>(42) • Should I work for free while applying for a job?

    - by Jevgeni Bogatyrjov
    An employer usually asks a candidate to do a small project at home ("homework") as a part of applying for a job. Last time I applied for a job (as a web developer), there were aproximately 10 applicants who were all given different tasks. Despite the fact that there was only one vacancy, the company used the work of all of the candidates in one of its projects. Actually, it is quite reasonable for a company to create these "vacancies" just to make people work for free - I estimate, that aproximately 2 weeks of programmer's work was saved with all of the job applications that company had on one vacancy. Is this a common practice and how can you protect yourself from working for free in the future? Have you seen this during your career?
