  • Linux: Tool to monitor every process, execute-command, shortly, monitor what's happening at the moment

    - by Bevor
Hello, due to a freeze problem of my Ubuntu 10.10 (it is not isolatable) I though about logging every executable of the kernel somehow in any file to see what happens last when a freeze occures the next time to not lose valuable information. I found acct but this is obviously not what I'm looking for. Actually it logs just user commands and those things. I need something which logs in a much "deeper" level. The best would be some kind of script which records every interrupt. Does anybody know some tool like that?

  • Linux freezes every few seconds

    - by Zeppomedio
We're having an issue where one our Linux boxes (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, running on EC2 with a quadruple-large size, 68GB of RAM and 8 virtual cores with 3.25GHz each) freezes up every few seconds. Typing in an ssh session will freeze, and running strace on one of the Postgresql processes that's running usually shows: 02:37:41.567990 semop(7831581, {{3, -1, 0}}, 1 for a few seconds before it proceeds (it always gets stuck at that semop). OProfile shows that most of the time is spent in the kernel (60%) versus 37% in Postgresql. The result of these halts (which began suddenly a day ago) is that load on the box has gone from 0.7 to 10+, and causes our entire stack to slow done. Any ideas on how to track down what's going on? iostat doesn't show the disks being particularly slow or overloaded, and top shows user cpu % spike from 8% to about 40% whenever these back-ups happen.

  • No COM1 port on hyper-v

    - by MPX
I just made a fresh Windows 8.1 install and am trying to set-up a VM for kernel debugging. Therefore, I need to create a serial link to debug the VM using windbg. Usually I just simply add a new COM port and use it as a named pipe. However, I can't find any way to add this hardware. There is nothing relevant on the "add hardware list". What do I need to install this port then? Thanks in advance!

  • can /usr/src be a sym link?

    - by lord.didger
I want to store all source code of programs I have installed in /usr/src. However, due to size of the drive I made a sym link /usr/src that points to ~/src. That was nice. Unfortunately, that caused virtualbox-dkms to fail to build the virtualbox kernel module because of a symlink within the linux-headers-*-common. 'script' points to ./../lib/linux-kbuild-3.1/scripts what is fine in /usr/src directory but wrong in ~/src. Can I bypass this problem or the only solution is to store sources within the directory /usr/src?

  • Bluetooth DUN Tethering fails

    - by tacone
I have an HTC Desire HD, with Android Froyo (2.2) and PDANet installed. I am using Ubuntu 10.10. I cannot tether it over Bluetooth either with Network Manager or BlueMan. (note, I installed Blueman only after failing with NetWork manager, and I even tried the last version from the PPA). With both my device is discovered, paired, setup. But connecting always fail. Network manager says it cannot get the details of my device Blueman says Connection Refused (111) Here are some relevant entries from syslog. • Disk failing on dell mini, are there diagnostic tools?

    - by John Lawrence Aspden
Hi, my dell mini 10v running Ubuntu 10.10 runs ok for hours, but then will suddenly slow down drastically. Switching to a console shows lots of error messages, which also get into /var/log/syslog. These errors happen every couple of seconds. I'm figuring that the disk is failing, but is there anyway to be sure, and can laptop disks be replaced easily? • In 10.10, USB 3.0 PCI Express card recognized by lspci but not lsusb or dmesg. How to fix?

    - by Paul
Asus N PC, runs 10.10 x86_64 The Asus N comes with 4 usb 2.0 ports, each labelled 2.0 on the case. Attempting to add two usb 3.0 ports to be provided by a generic usb 3.0 pci express card installed in the pci expres slot. The new card says usb 3.0 and has the blue ports. The card is installed into the laptop unpowered, then the laptop is powered on and boots normally. Nothing happens when a USB 3.0 flash drive is inserted into the usb 3.0 port. uname -a Linux drpaulbrewer-N90SV 2.6.35.8 #1 SMP Fri Jan 14 15:54:11 EST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux lspci -v 00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 671MX Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. • Problem calling linux C code from FIQ handler

I'm working on an armv6 core and have an FIQ hander that works great when I do all of my work in it. However I need to branch to some additional code that's too large for the FIQ memory area. The FIQ handler gets copied from fiq_start to fiq_end to 0xFFFF001C when registered static void test_fiq_handler(void) { asm volatile("\ .global fiq_start\n\ fiq_start:"); // clear gpio irq asm("ldr r10, GPIO_BASE_ISR"); asm("ldr r9, [r10]"); asm("orr r9, #0x04"); asm("str r9, [r10]"); // clear force register asm("ldr r10, AVIC_BASE_INTFRCH"); asm("ldr r9, [r10]"); asm("mov r9, #0"); asm("str r9, [r10]"); // prepare branch register asm(" ldr r11, fiq_handler"); // save all registers, build sp and branch to C asm(" adr r9, regpool"); asm(" stmia r9, {r0 - r8, r14}"); asm(" adr sp, fiq_sp"); asm(" ldr sp, [sp]"); asm(" add lr, pc,#4"); asm(" mov pc, r11"); #if 0 asm("ldr r10, IOMUX_ADDR12"); asm("ldr r9, [r10]"); asm("orr r9, #0x08 @ top/vertex LED"); asm("str r9,[r10] @turn on LED"); asm("bic r9, #0x08 @ top/vertex LED"); asm("str r9,[r10] @turn on LED"); #endif asm(" adr r9, regpool"); asm(" ldmia r9, {r0 - r8, r14}"); // return asm("subs pc, r14, #4"); asm("IOMUX_ADDR12: .word 0xFC2A4000"); asm("AVIC_BASE_INTCNTL: .word 0xFC400000"); asm("AVIC_BASE_INTENNUM: .word 0xFC400008"); asm("AVIC_BASE_INTDISNUM: .word 0xFC40000C"); asm("AVIC_BASE_FIVECSR: .word 0xFC400044"); asm("AVIC_BASE_INTFRCH: .word 0xFC400050"); asm("GPIO_BASE_ISR: .word 0xFC2CC018"); asm(".globl fiq_handler"); asm("fiq_sp: .long fiq_stack+120"); asm("fiq_handler: .long 0"); asm("regpool: .space 40"); asm(".pool"); asm(".align 5"); asm("fiq_stack: .space 124"); asm(".global fiq_end"); asm("fiq_end:"); } fiq_hander gets set to the following function: static void fiq_flip_pins(void) { asm("ldr r10, IOMUX_ADDR12_k"); asm("ldr r9, [r10]"); asm("orr r9, #0x08 @ top/vertex LED"); asm("str r9,[r10] @turn on LED"); asm("bic r9, #0x08 @ top/vertex LED"); asm("str r9,[r10] @turn on LED"); asm("IOMUX_ADDR12_k: .word 0xFC2A4000"); } EXPORT_SYMBOL(fiq_flip_pins); I know that since the FIQ handler operates outside of any normal kernel API's and that it is a rather high priority interrupt I must ensure that whatever I call is already swapped into memory. I do this by having the fiq_flip_pins function defined in the monolithic kernel and not as a module which gets vmalloc. If I don't branch to the fiq_flip_pins function, and instead do the work in the test_fiq_handler function everything works as expected. It's the branching that's causing me problems at the moment. Right after branching I get a kernel panic about a paging request. I don't understand why I'm getting the paging request. fiq_flip_pins is in the kernel at: c00307ec t fiq_flip_pins Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 736e6f63 pgd = c3dd0000 [736e6f63] *pgd=00000000 Internal error: Oops: 5 [#1] PREEMPT Modules linked in: hello_1 CPU: 0 Not tainted (2.6.31-207-g7286c01-svn4 #122) PC is at strnlen+0x10/0x28 LR is at string+0x38/0xcc pc : [<c016b004>] lr : [<c016c754>] psr: a00001d3 sp : c3817ea0 ip : 736e6f63 fp : 00000400 r10: c03cab5c r9 : c0339ae0 r8 : 736e6f63 r7 : c03caf5c r6 : c03cab6b r5 : ffffffff r4 : 00000000 r3 : 00000004 r2 : 00000000 r1 : ffffffff r0 : 736e6f63 Flags: NzCv IRQs off FIQs off Mode SVC_32 ISA ARM Segment user Control: 00c5387d Table: 83dd0008 DAC: 00000015 Process sh (pid: 1663, stack limit = 0xc3816268) Stack: (0xc3817ea0 to 0xc3818000) Since there are no API calls in my code I have to assume that something is going wrong in the C call and back. I have an Ubuntu server set up with two SATA drives in a RAID 1 configuration with MDADM. The machine is used to record raw video, which involves a lot of writing to the disk. Hi, I have a server on which resides a fairly visited web app. It has a raid1 of 2 HDDs, 64MB Buffer, 7200 RPM. Today it started throwing out errors like: kernel: ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen kernel: ata2.00: cmd b0/d0:01:00:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/00 tag 0 pio 512 in kernel: res 40/00:00:00:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout) kernel: ata2.00: status: { DRDY } kernel: ata2: hard resetting link kernel: ata2: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) kernel: ata2.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ kernel: ata2.00: max_sectors limited to 256 for NCQ kernel: ata2.00: configured for UDMA/133 kernel: sd 1:0:0:0: timing out command, waited 7s kernel: ata2: EH complete kernel: SCSI device sda: 976773168 512-byte hdwr sectors (500108 MB) kernel: sda: Write Protect is off kernel: SCSI device sda: drive cache: write back All day long it has been in load higher than 10-15. • question about a macro in Linux Kernel List implementation

    - by holydiver
I generally have ignored using macros while writing in C but I think I know fundamentals about them. While i was reading the source code of list in linux kernel, i saw something like that: #define LIST_HEAD_INIT(name) { &(name), &(name) } #define LIST_HEAD(name) \ struct list_head name = LIST_HEAD_INIT(name) (You can access the remaining part of the code from here.) I didn't understand the function of ampersands(I don't think they are the address of operands here) in LIST_HEAD_INIT and so the use of LIST_HEAD_INIT in the code. I'd appreciate if someone can enlighten me.

  • Our embedded linux system won't recognize a USB Device if it is plugged in before powerup. Suggestions?

    - by Blaine
We are developing on a small embedded device. This device us a gumstix overo board running OpenEmbedded linux. We have our development almost completely done, and have run into the strangest of bugs that we can't figure out. We have a USB Device (Spectrophotometer) that has a USB2.0 Connection and an external power supply for the light source. Typical behavior is that you plug in the power supply, then the USB connection to a host. When the usb connection is detected by the device, the device boots up and enables the light source and fan. The device is then able to be used by the host system. The problem is that if the device is plugged into the Gumstix before we turn on the Gumstix, the USB Device apparently is not probed by the system (and hence does not turn on). Under a normal situation, when the connection is initialized by plugging in the usb cable, the spectro turns itself on and becomes available to the system (this can be seen via "lsusb" typically). Neither of these things are happening. There is no device detected via "lsusb" and no dmesg errors of any kind that we can see. It is as if the device is not plugged in. The device does show up and work fine if we unplug the USB cable and plug it back in once the system is booted up. It turns on and shows up on the usb bus, and we can access it with our driver. On any other desktop or laptop, it does not matter if the host system is on or off when we plug in the spectrometer. This behavior is what I would consider to be "normal" - that the usb system is probed and initialized at boot time, and the usb devices come online. In other words, our system is fully functional as long as we plug in the usb device after the system is booted up. Unfortunately this isn't possible in our final product - everything comes on at once. Additional Info: 1) We have tried a flash drive attached to the system when the system is turned off. Booting up the system brings the flash drive online, as expected 2) There are no messages regarding the spectro or usb device (using dmesg). "lsusb" only lists the USB hubs / controllers. It is literally as if the device is not present and not plugged in. 3) We have tried a brand new image from gumstix and an older image from last year. Both images have this problem. This problem exists on all 3 gumstix devices we use. Does anyone have any suggestions? From what I can tell it isn't really possible to do a complete "reboot" of the usb system that is a complete emulation of "unplugging" and "replugging" a usb device. I feel like what is happening is that there is no initial probe on the usb bus that would trigger the usb handshaking, but this is somehow specific to the spectro. This seems to be a kernel issue or at least an issue in how the kernel is initializing the usb subsystem. I'm not really sure though. I have tried the gumstix mailing list, but there doesn't seem to be anyone who has seen this issue before. Any advice or suggestions on where to start looking would be fantastic. Thank you! Blaine output etc. $ uname -a Linux overo 2.6.33 #1 Tue Apr 27 08:35:38 PDT 2010 armv7l GNU/Linux When the system is up and running and spectro is plugged in (working as intended), this is lsusb: Bus 001 Device 116: ID 2457:1022 Device Descriptor: bLength 18 bDescriptorType 1 bcdUSB 2.00 bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at Interface level) bDeviceSubClass 0 bDeviceProtocol 0 bMaxPacketSize0 64 idVendor 0x2457 idProduct 0x1022 bcdDevice 0.02 iManufacturer 1 USB4000 1.01.11 iProduct 2 Ocean Optics USB4000 iSerial 0 bNumConfigurations 1 Configuration Descriptor: bLength 9 bDescriptorType 2 wTotalLength 46 bNumInterfaces 1 bConfigurationValue 1 iConfiguration 0 bmAttributes 0x80 (Bus Powered) MaxPower 400mA Interface Descriptor: bLength 9 bDescriptorType 4 bInterfaceNumber 0 bAlternateSetting 0 bNumEndpoints 4 bInterfaceClass 255 Vendor Specific Class bInterfaceSubClass 0 bInterfaceProtocol 0 iInterface 0 Endpoint Descriptor: bLength 7 bDescriptorType 5 bEndpointAddress 0x01 EP 1 OUT bmAttributes 2 Transfer Type Bulk Synch Type None Usage Type Data wMaxPacketSize 0x0200 1x 512 bytes bInterval 0 Endpoint Descriptor: bLength 7 bDescriptorType 5 bEndpointAddress 0x82 EP 2 IN bmAttributes 2 Transfer Type Bulk Synch Type None Usage Type Data wMaxPacketSize 0x0200 1x 512 bytes bInterval 0 Endpoint Descriptor: bLength 7 bDescriptorType 5 bEndpointAddress 0x86 EP 6 IN bmAttributes 2 Transfer Type Bulk Synch Type None Usage Type Data wMaxPacketSize 0x0200 1x 512 bytes bInterval 0 Endpoint Descriptor: bLength 7 bDescriptorType 5 bEndpointAddress 0x81 EP 1 IN bmAttributes 2 Transfer Type Bulk Synch Type None Usage Type Data wMaxPacketSize 0x0200 1x 512 bytes bInterval 0 Device Qualifier (for other device speed): bLength 10 bDescriptorType 6 bcdUSB 2.00 bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at Interface level) bDeviceSubClass 0 bDeviceProtocol 0 bMaxPacketSize0 64 bNumConfigurations 1 Device Status: 0x0000 (Bus Powered) dmesg output: usb usb1: usb auto-resume hub 1-0:1.0: hub_resume usb usb2: usb auto-resume ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: resume root hub hub 1-0:1.0: state 7 ports 1 chg 0000 evt 0000 hub 2-0:1.0: hub_resume hub 2-0:1.0: state 7 ports 3 chg 0000 evt 0000 hub 1-0:1.0: hub_suspend usb usb1: bus auto-suspend hub 2-0:1.0: hub_suspend usb usb2: bus auto-suspend ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: suspend root hub usb usb2: usb resume ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: resume root hub hub 2-0:1.0: hub_resume ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: GetStatus port 2 status 001803 POWER sig=j CSC CONNECT hub 2-0:1.0: port 2: status 0501 change 0001 hub 2-0:1.0: state 7 ports 3 chg 0004 evt 0000 hub 2-0:1.0: port 2, status 0501, change 0000, 480 Mb/s ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: port 2 high speed ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: GetStatus port 2 status 001005 POWER sig=se0 PE CONNECT usb 2-2: new high speed USB device using ehci-omap and address 2 ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: port 2 high speed ehci-omap ehci-omap.0: GetStatus port 2 status 001005 POWER sig=se0 PE CONNECT usb 2-2: default language 0x0409 usb 2-2: udev 2, busnum 2, minor = 129 usb 2-2: New USB device found, idVendor=2457, idProduct=1022 usb 2-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 usb 2-2: Product: Ocean Optics USB4000 usb 2-2: Manufacturer: USB4000 1.01.11 usb 2-2: uevent usb 2-2: usb_probe_device usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice usb 2-2: uevent usb 2-2: adding 2-2:1.0 (config #1, interface 0) usb 2-2:1.0: uevent drivers/usb/core/inode.c: creating file '002' dmesg has nothing to say, and lusb simply lists nothing else but the two default usb controllers / hubs if we plug the device in before the system is turned on.

  • Routing tables don't show ppp0 after 12.04 kernel upgrade to 3.5.0: Haier CE682 modem configuration

    - by ubunsteve
I'm trying to get my Haier CE682 EVDO modem, model number 201e:1022 to work in ubuntu 12.04 kernel 3.5.0-030500-generic #201207211835 . I had it working in a previous 12.04 kernel, using compat-wireless and these instructions http://zulkhamsyahmh.blogspot.com/2012/05/install-smartfren-haier-ce682-on-ubuntu.html, and to get it working had to edit the routing tables so that there was a ppp0 showing up, as suggested at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/wvdial-is-connecting-but-im-unable-to-do-anything-714861/ Network manager doesn't work with this modem, so I use either wvdial or gpppon to connect to it, both which work (after I run the command sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x201e product=0x1022 ) This is the output of when I connect with gpppon to the modem: Using interface ppp0 Connect: ppp0 <-- /dev/ttyUSB0 sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 ] rcvd [LCP ConfAck id=0x1 ] rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x2 ] sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x2 ] sent [LCP EchoReq id=0x0 magic=0x819c86db] rcvd [CHAP Challenge id=0x1 <1ac8f12799e953967a3cc222c9254690, name = ""] sent [CHAP Response id=0x1 <6f12a903dc40915ca2761c17b87f8fbd, name = "smart"] rcvd [LCP EchoRep id=0x0 magic=0x0] rcvd [CHAP Success id=0x1 ""] CHAP authentication succeeded CHAP authentication succeeded sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x1 ] sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 ] rcvd [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 ] sent [IPCP ConfAck id=0x1 ] rcvd [CCP ConfReq id=0x1] sent [CCP ConfAck id=0x1] rcvd [CCP ConfRej id=0x1 ] sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x2] rcvd [IPCP ConfRej id=0x1 ] sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x2 ] rcvd [CCP ConfAck id=0x2] rcvd [IPCP ConfNak id=0x2 ] sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x3 ] rcvd [IPCP ConfAck id=0x3 ] not replacing existing default route via 192.168.3.1 local IP address 10.191.248.154 remote IP address 10.17.95.25 primary DNS address 10.17.3.244 secondary DNS address 10.17.3.245 as you can see there is a problem with "not replacing existing default route via 192.168.3.1" This it the out put of route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface default 192.168.3.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0 link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 1000 0 0 wlan0 192.168.3.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0 I had tried these commands, which had previously worked in the earlier kernel: route del default route add default ppp0 but that broke my wireless internet connection. I then added the default routing as shown above with sudo route add default gw 192.168.3.1 wlan0 So it seems I need to add or change the routing to show a ppp0 connection, but I don't know how to do that.

  • Fix ACPI DSDT of Amilo Pa 1538

    - by kayahr
I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa 1538 laptops and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (Kernel 2.6.32). Main problem is that the fans of the notebook are always on even when the temperature is low. Another problem is that the display brightness can not be adjusted. Since some years I use Dell laptops and never experienced any ACPI problems so I thought that it is no longer needed to fix ACPI tables but now I have this crap of a laptop and I think I have to do it. Unfortunately I need some help repairing the DSDT. The dsdt.dat and dsdt.dsl of the laptop can be found here: http://www.ailis.de/~k/permdata/20100420/dsdt/ Compiling the DSDT gives the following output: # iasl -sa dsdt.dsl Intel ACPI Component Architecture ASL Optimizing Compiler version 20090521 [Jun 30 2009] Copyright (C) 2000 - 2009 Intel Corporation Supports ACPI Specification Revision 3.0a dsdt.dsl 81: Method (\_WAK, 1, NotSerialized) Warning 1080 - ^ Reserved method must return a value (_WAK) dsdt.dsl 207: Method (_L10, 0, NotSerialized) Warning 1087 - ^ Not all control paths return a value (_L10) dsdt.dsl 2861: Method (NVIF, 3, NotSerialized) Warning 1087 - ^ Not all control paths return a value (NVIF) dsdt.dsl 4551: Store (\_SB.PCI0.LPC0.PMRD (0xFA), Local0) Warning 1099 - Statement is unreachable ^ ASL Input: dsdt.dsl - 4962 lines, 162828 bytes, 2300 keywords AML Output: dsdt.aml - 17627 bytes, 591 named objects, 1709 executable opcodes Compilation complete. 0 Errors, 4 Warnings, 0 Remarks, 519 Optimizations Anyone here with DSDT experience who can help me fixing the DSDT?

  • Why doesn't the monitor output anything in Linux console mode?

    - by flypen
I install Linux without graphics support. Previously I used a monitor with 720p support. And it can display normally. Now I change to a monitor with 1080p support. I can see BIOS and GRUB info on monitor, and kernel messages in early stages. However, the monitor says that there is no input immediately, and then I can't see anything again. It seems that it happens after something initializes. Is it related to vesafb? vesafb: mode is 1280x1024x32, linelength=5120, pages=0 vesafb: scrolling: redraw vesafb: Truecolor: size=8:8:8:8, shift=24:16:8:0 mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,800000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,400000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,200000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,100000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,80000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,40000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,20000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,10000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,8000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,4000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,2000 old: write-back new: write-combining mtrr: type mismatch for 7f800000,1000 old: write-back new: write-combining vesafb: framebuffer at 0x7f800000, mapped to 0xffffc90011380000, using 5120k, total 5120k Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 160x64 fb0: VESA VGA frame buffer device

  • Enable wireless on Dell Inspiron 1300

    - by Simon
As per subject, I've looked at various resources and attempted ndiswrapper solutions, found a one-click solution that lead to a 404 and this but none works. I've run all updates. Once I managed to lose my wired connection as well and had to reinstall. This is my first hour with Linux. iwconfig gives this before I do anything: lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=0 dBm Retry Greetings, I'm working with RHEL 5.5 guest VMs under VMware ESX 4. When I configure the virtual disks in the VM hardware settings, each disk has a SCSI address in the format "N:M". For example, "1:3" would mean SCSI host number 1 and SCSI target ID 3. When I look at the disk info from the VM's BIOS or a Windows OS, the detected SCSI address info matches up with the virtual hardware settings. But under Linux, the SCSI address components don't match up, at least not completely or consistently. I've tried the three supported virtual SCSI and SAS drivers and they all seem to be "broken", but in different ways. Here's a list of the virtual hardware addresses vs what was detected under Linux with each of the drivers: Driver vHW Addr Linux Addr -------- -------- ---------- LSI SAS 0:0 0:0 LSI SAS 0:3 0:1 LSI SAS 0:6 0:2 LSI SCSI 1:1 2:1 LSI SCSI 1:4 2:4 LSI SCSI 1:7 2:7 pvSCSI 2:2 1:2 pvSCSI 2:5 1:5 pvSCSI 2:8 1:8 My main question is why does this happen under Linux? The next question is: how do I get it fixed or fix it myself? If I was going to guess, I'd say it's an issue with how the kernel is handing out the SCSI host number and how the Linux SCSI driver (included with VMware tools) is detecting the SCSI target number. Perhaps the order the drivers are loaded also has something to do with the issue. I'm guessing this would not involve udev, but I could be wrong. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! PS. My environment is VMware, but I don't need an answer for these drivers specifically. I imagine this might be a problem with any SCSI driver under Linux.

  • overriding default scheduler for blkio requests in cgroups

    - by Aamir Mushtaq
I am trying to optimize a set of servers that have to reside on single machine. i.e. i can have multiple application server, a DB server and of course a samba server as well in same instance. Now I was looking into several optimizing options available to me. In my quest, i did my tuning of the network stack. coming to the CPU, MEMORY and the BLKIO tweaks, i am using CGROUPS. The problem i am facing is that for enhanced performance in the nature of the applications that i am running, the CFQ Scheduler that is implemented for the BLKIO subsystem is not optimal. I was looking more for a Deadline Scheduler because that will serve my purpose well. My question is whether it is possible for us to change the scheduler in the kernel compilation itself for the BLKIO to Deadline and it will reflect in my usage of [CGROUP hierarchies][3]? Since when running the service cgconf, a new fs is mounted and i dont want it to revert to CFQ scheduler. I also welcome any suggestions that will enable me to have more control over my resources.
