  Android is for geeks. It best fits for the users who know how to get around sloppy areas and find their way out. If you are an heavy Android user you would have noticed Apps crashing often. A well written App should not crash, if crashes should exit the process gracefully. But unfortunately Google Play has many apps that not only just crash, they hang in a where they don’t respond and you can’t access the application. The only option left to you is to forcefully close them. If you encounter a situation to forcefully close an App you have two options. First one is to use Task Manager application to close them and the second option is use built in Android OS features.   I ordered few items from Amazon.com last week and when the package is delivered I found an item is missing. I reached out to Amazon Customer care and they resolved the issue by resending the missing item. Amazon’s customer care is awesome! They just asked me few questions regarding the order, person who accepted the delivery and without any further delay they provided details on when I’ll get the replacement item. Best part is Amazon customer care support is available through email, chat & telephone. I chose support through a chat session and resolved the issue. If you also missed an item or found a damaged item then here are the steps to be followed to get a replacement item Step 1 -  Go to amazon.com/contact Step 2 -  Click on Contact Us button available in General Support section, you may have to provide authentication details Step 3 – Contact Us screen displays your recent order. If your query is related to the displayed order then proceed go to next step otherwise select your order by clicking on Choose Different Order button Step 4 – Select the missing/damaged items from the list of items displayed from your order Step 5 – Choose the issue with your order. In case if an item is missing you may want to choose “Problem with an order”, “Missing item or parts” and “Entire item missing from shipment”.   Windows 8 sports a re-imagined desktop and tablet user interface with touch friendly Metro looks. One of the major changes in Windows 8 for a common users  is the lack of start menu, with which we got friended for more than a decade. On Windows 8 we would be missing it. As there is no start menu in Windows 8, the way you shutdown a Windows 8 computer is a bit different. To shutdown using Mouse, you need to hover on the top right edge of the screen to open the hidden menu,  go to "Settings"  tab -> "Power" -> Then choose for "Shut down", "Sleep" or "Restart".  That’s a lot of Mouse movement work and if you are a power user then you may not like to do that. How about shutting down the PC using Keyboard? • Google accidentally revealed Nexus 5 phone in Android Kitkat launch video

  Today Google officially announced KitKat as the name of the next version of Android OS(v4.4). They posted a video to showcase the unveiling of the KitKat statue at the company’s headquarters, but they accidentally revealed much more. 9to5Google spotted an unreleased Android smartphone in the video and they posted screen grabs of Googlers using it to take photos. This unreleased phone could be the next version of Google Nexus phone. Google few days ago reduced price of Nexus 4 smartphones by $100 and 8 GB version is reported out of inventory. With all these signs it seems to be clear that it is just weeks away for the launch of Google Nexus smartphone. • Team Foundation Server– Debug symbols(pdb files) generated in Release build? Fix it.

  Yesterday I setup TFS for my .NET playground website to implement continuous integration and deployments. After a successful build I noticed that debug symbols(pdb files) were generated even though TFS is configured to build in Release mode.  After a bit of analysis its turned out to be the behavior of TFS to generate debug symbols (pdb files) until we pass the attribute DebugType = None. Here are the steps to pass DebugType parameter to MSBuild of TFS Go to Team Explorer Select Build Defintion >> Edit Build Definition Switch to Process tab Navigate to Advanced Section and locate MSBuild Arguments Add the following: /p:Configuration=Release /p:DebugType=none

• Google Rolls Out Secured Search. It’s Slightly Different From Regular Search

  Google rolled out secured version of it’s search engine at https://google.com (did you notice https instead of http?). This search engine lets everyone to use Google search in a secured way. How is it secured? When you use https://google.com, the data exchanged between your browser and Google servers is encrypted to make sure that no one can sniff it. Is my search history secured from Google? No. The search queries you submit to Google are stored in Google servers. There is no change Google’s search history recording. Any differences between Regular Search and Secured Search Results? Yes. Secured search is slightly different from regular search. When you are accessing Google Secured Search Image search options will not be available on the left side bar. Site may respond slow compared to regular search site as there is a overhead to establish between your browser and the server. • Speed up SQL Server queries with PREFETCH

  Problem The SAN data volume has a throughput capacity of 400MB/sec; however my query is still running slow and it is waiting on I/O (PAGEIOLATCH_SH). Windows Performance Monitor shows data volume speed of 4MB/sec. Where is the problem and how can I find the problem? Solution This is another summary of a great article published by R. Meyyappan at www.sqlworkshops.com.  In my opinion, this is the first article that highlights and explains with working examples how PREFETCH determines the performance of a Nested Loop join.  First of all, I just want to recall that Prefetch is a mechanism with which SQL Server can fire up many I/O requests in parallel for a Nested Loop join. When SQL Server executes a Nested Loop join, it may or may not enable Prefetch accordingly to the number of rows in the outer table. If the number of rows in the outer table is greater than 25 then SQL will enable and use Prefetch to speed up query performance, but it will not if it is less than 25 rows. In this section we are going to see different scenarios where prefetch is automatically enabled or disabled. These examples only use two tables RegionalOrder and Orders.  If you want to create the sample tables and sample data, please visit this site www.sqlworkshops.com. The breakdown of the data in the RegionalOrders table is shown below and the Orders table contains about 6 million rows. In this first example, I am creating a stored procedure against two tables and then execute the stored procedure.  Before running the stored proceudre, I am going to include the actual execution plan. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Create procedure that pulls orders based on City --Do not forget to include the actual execution plan CREATE PROC RegionalOrdersProc @City CHAR(20) AS BEGIN DECLARE @OrderID INT, @OrderDetails CHAR(200) SELECT @OrderID = o.OrderID, @OrderDetails = o.OrderDetails       FROM RegionalOrders ao INNER JOIN Orders o ON (o.OrderID = ao.OrderID)       WHERE City = @City END GO SET STATISTICS time ON GO --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Execute the procedure with parameter SmallCity1 EXEC RegionalOrdersProc 'SmallCity1' GO After running the stored procedure, if we right click on the Clustered Index Scan and click Properties we can see the Estimated Numbers of Rows is 24.    If we right click on Nested Loops and click Properties we do not see Prefetch, because it is disabled. This behavior was expected, because the number of rows containing the value ‘SmallCity1’ in the outer table is less than 25.   Now, if I run the same procedure with parameter ‘BigCity’ will Prefetch be enabled? --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Execute the procedure with parameter BigCity --We are using cached plan EXEC RegionalOrdersProc 'BigCity' GO As we can see from the below screenshot, prefetch is not enabled and the query takes around 7 seconds to execute. This is because the query used the cached plan from ‘SmallCity1’ that had prefetch disabled. Please note that even if we have 999 rows for ‘BigCity’ the Estimated Numbers of Rows is still 24.   Finally, let’s clear the procedure cache to trigger a new optimization and execute the procedure again. DBCC freeproccache GO EXEC RegionalOrdersProc 'BigCity' GO This time, our procedure runs under a second, Prefetch is enabled and the Estimated Number of Rows is 999.   The RegionalOrdersProc can be optimized by using the below example where we are using an optimizer hint. I have also shown some other hints that could be used as well. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --You can fix the issue by using any of the following --hints --Create procedure that pulls orders based on City DROP PROC RegionalOrdersProc GO CREATE PROC RegionalOrdersProc @City CHAR(20) AS BEGIN DECLARE @OrderID INT, @OrderDetails CHAR(200) SELECT @OrderID = o.OrderID, @OrderDetails = o.OrderDetails       FROM RegionalOrders ao INNER JOIN Orders o ON (o.OrderID = ao.OrderID)       WHERE City = @City       --Hinting optimizer to use SmallCity2 for estimation       OPTION (optimize FOR (@City = 'SmallCity2'))       --Hinting optimizer to estimate for the currnet parameters       --option (recompile)       --Hinting optimize not to use histogram rather       --density for estimation (average of all 3 cities)       --option (optimize for (@City UNKNOWN))       --option (optimize for UNKNOWN) END GO Conclusion, this tip was mainly aimed at illustrating how Prefetch can speed up query execution and how the different number of rows can trigger this.

• jQuery urlencode/decode patch help

  Hi Gang, I'm using this jQuery urlencode and urldecode plugin - very simple and easy to use but it doesn't, in its original form, remove + from the string. The one comment on the home page suggests a patch but I don't know how to implement it. Can anyone help me out? • Integrating PartCover.NET with NAnt

  Hello, I'm trying to integrate PartCover.NET with NAnt and CruiseControl.NET I can run PartCover.NET browser without problems, but it does not work once I try to run it in an NAnt task (in my CCNET build). There must be an issue with my NAnt target but I can't find it.   Rails foreman does not load all my services defined in Procfile. • Running job in the background from Perl WITHOUT waiting for return

  The Disclaimer First of all, I know this question (or close variations) have been asked a thousand times. I really spent a few hours looking in the obvious and the not-so-obvious places, but there may be something small I'm missing. The Context Let me define the problem more clearly: I'm writing a newsletter app in which I want the actual sending process to be async. As in, user clicks "send", request returns immediately and then they can check the progress in a specific page (via AJAX, for example). It's written in your traditional LAMP stack. In the particular host I'm using, PHP's exec() and system() are disabled for security reasons, but Perl's system functions (exec, system and backticks) aren't. So my workaround solution was to create a "trigger" script in Perl that calls the actual sender via the PHP CLI, and redirects to the progress page. Where I'm Stuck The very line the calls the sender is, as of now: system("php -q sender.php &"); Problem being, it's not returning immediately, but waiting for the script to finish. I want it to run in the background but the system call itself returns right away. I also tried running a similar script in my Linux terminal, and in fact the prompt doesn't show until after the script has finished, even though my test output doesn't run, indicating it's really running in the background. What I already tried Perl's exec() function - same result of system(). Changing the command to: "php -q sender.php | at now"), hoping that the "at" daemon would return and that the PHP process itself wouldn't be attached to Perl. What should I try now?

• Forking in PHP on Windows

  We are running PHP on a Windows server (a source of many problems indeed, but migrating is not an option currently). There are a few points where a user-initiated action will need to kick off a few things that take a while and about which the user doesn't need to know if they succeed or fail, such as sending off an email or making sure some third-party accounts are updated. If I could just fork with pcntl_fork(), this would be very simple, but the PCNTL functions are not available in Windows. It seems the closest I can get is to do something of this nature: exec( 'php-cgi.exe somescript.php' ); However, this would be far more complicated. The actions I need to kick off rely on a lot of context that already will exist in the running process; to use the above example, I'd need to figure out the essential data and supply it to the new script in some way. If I could fork, it'd just be a matter of letting the parent process return early, leaving the child to work on a few more things. I've found a few people talking about their own work in getting various PCNTL functions compiled on Windows, but none seemed to have anything available (broken links, etc). Despite this question having practically the same name as mine, it seems the problem was more execution timeout than needing to fork. So, is my best option to just refactor a bit to deal with calling php-cgi, or are there other options? Edit: It seems exec() won't work for this, at least not without me figuring some other aspect of it, as it waits until the call returns. I figured I could use START, sort of like exec( 'start php-cgi.exe somescript.php' );, but it still waits until the other script finishes.

• icacls giving an error message "The System cannot Find the File Specified" When executed on folder

  I have a remote share in windows 7 and accessing the same share from windows 2008. • Best approach, Dynamic OpenXML in T-SQL

  hello, i'm storing XML values to an entry in my database. Originally, i extract the xml datatype to my business logic then fill the XML data into a DataSet. I want to improve this process by loading the XML right into the T-SQL. Instead of getting the xml as string then converting it on the BL. My issue is this: each xml entry is dynamic, meaning it can be any column created by the user. • PHP execute command as subcommand

  I have the following 2 files and am executing them on linux (debian). File1.php <?php exec("php -f file2.php > /dev/null 2>&1 &"); sleep(100); File2.php <?php exec("sleep 30 > /dev/null 2>&1 &"); exec("sleep 30 > /dev/null 2>&1 &"); sleep(100); The way it currently is it first starts file1.php and fires up file2.php and immediatly begins the sleep commands. It does not wait for the first sleep to finish to continue. The problem is that the file2.php and sleep commands are not subcommands of file1.php and I can't simply kill it to kill all subcommands. • curl_multi_exec stops if one url is 404, how can I change that?

  Currently, my cURL multi exec stops if one url it connects to doesn't work, so a few questions: 1: Why does it stop? That doesn't make sense to me. 2: How can I make it continue? • SQL Server stored procedure return code oddity

  Hello The client that calls this code is restricted and can only deal with return codes from stored procs. So, we modified our usual contract to RETURN -1 on error and default to RETURN 0 if no error If the code hits the inner catch block, then the RETURN code default to -4. • Rename files and directories using substitution and variables

  I have found several similar questions that have solutions, except they don't involve variables. I have a particular pattern in a tree of files and directories - the pattern is the word TEMPLATE. I want a script file to rename all of the files and directories by replacing the word TEMPLATE with some other name that is contained in the variable ${newName} If I knew that the value of ${newName} was say "Fred lives here", then the command find . -name '*TEMPLATE*' -exec bash -c 'mv "$0" "${0/TEMPLATE/Fred lives here}"' {} \; will do the job However, if my script is: newName="Fred lives here" find . -name '*TEMPLATE*' -exec bash -c 'mv "$0" "${0/TEMPLATE/${newName}}"' {} \; then the word TEMPLATE is replaced by null rather than "Fred lives here" I need the "" around $0 because there are spaces in the path name, so I can't do something like: find . -name '*TEMPLATE*' -exec bash -c 'mv "$0" "${0/TEMPLATE/"${newName}"}"' {} \; Can anyone help me get this script to work so that all files and directories that contain the word TEMPLATE have TEMPLATE replaced by whatever the value of ${newName} is eg, if newName="A different name" and a I had directory of /foo/bar/some TEMPLATE directory/with files then the directory would be renamed to /foo/bar/some A different name directory/with files and a file called some TEMPLATE file would be renamed to some A different name file
