  • How to send web browser a loading page, then some time later a results page

    - by Kurt W. Leucht
    I've wasted at least a half day of my company's time searching the Internet for an answer and I'm getting wrapped around the axle here. I can't figure out the difference between all the different technology choices (long polling, ajax streaming, comet, XMPP, etc.) and I can't get a simple hello world example working on my PC. I am running Apache 2.2 and ActivePerl 5.10.0. JavaScript is completely acceptable for this solution. All I want to do is write a simple Perl CGI script that when accessed, it immediately returns some HTML that tells the user to wait or maybe sends an animated GIF. Then without any user intervention (no mouse clicks or anything) I want the CGI script to at some time later replace the wait message or the animated GIF with the actual results from their query. I know this is simple stuff and websites do it all the time using JavaScript, but I can't find a single working example that I can cut and paste onto my machine that will work in Perl. Here is my simple Hello World example that I've compiled from various Internet sources, but it doesn't seem to work. When I refresh this Perl CGI script in my web browser it prints nothing for 5 seconds, then it prints the PLEASE BE PATIENT web page, but not the results web page. So the Ajax XMLHttpRequest stuff obviously isn't working right. What am I doing wrong? #!C:\Perl\bin\perl.exe use CGI; use CGI::Carp qw/fatalsToBrowser warningsToBrowser/; sub Create_HTML { my $html = <<EOHTML; <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache" /> <meta http-equiv="expires" content="-1" /> <script type="text/javascript" > var xmlhttp=false; /*@cc_on @*/ /*@if (@_jscript_version >= 5) // JScript gives us Conditional compilation, we can cope with old IE versions. // and security blocked creation of the objects. try { xmlhttp = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); } catch (e) { try { xmlhttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } catch (E) { xmlhttp = false; } } @end @*/ if (!xmlhttp && typeof XMLHttpRequest!='undefined') { try { xmlhttp = new XMLHttpRequest(); } catch (e) { xmlhttp=false; } } if (!xmlhttp && window.createRequest) { try { xmlhttp = window.createRequest(); } catch (e) { xmlhttp=false; } } </script> <title>Ajax Streaming Connection Demo</title> </head> <body> Some header text. <p> <div id="response">PLEASE BE PATIENT</div> <p> Some footer text. </body> </html> EOHTML return $html; } my $cgi = new CGI; print $cgi->header; print Create_HTML(); sleep(5); print "<script type=\"text/javascript\">\n"; print "\$('response').innerHTML = 'Here are your results!';\n"; print "</script>\n";

  • android get duration from maps.google.com directions

    - by urobo
    At the moment I am using this code to inquire google maps for directions from an address to another one, then I simply draw it on a mapview from its GeometryCollection. But yet this isn't enough I need also to extract the total expected duration from the kml. can someone give a little sample code to help me? thanks StringBuilder urlString = new StringBuilder(); urlString.append("http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en"); urlString.append("&saddr=");//from urlString.append( Double.toString((double)src.getLatitudeE6()/1.0E6 )); urlString.append(","); urlString.append( Double.toString((double)src.getLongitudeE6()/1.0E6 )); urlString.append("&daddr=");//to urlString.append( Double.toString((double)dest.getLatitudeE6()/1.0E6 )); urlString.append(","); urlString.append( Double.toString((double)dest.getLongitudeE6()/1.0E6 )); urlString.append("&ie=UTF8&0&om=0&output=kml"); //Log.d("xxx","URL="+urlString.toString()); // get the kml (XML) doc. And parse it to get the coordinates(direction route). Document doc = null; HttpURLConnection urlConnection= null; URL url = null; try { url = new URL(urlString.toString()); urlConnection=(HttpURLConnection)url.openConnection(); urlConnection.setRequestMethod("GET"); urlConnection.setDoOutput(true); urlConnection.setDoInput(true); urlConnection.connect(); dbf = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance(); db = dbf.newDocumentBuilder(); doc = db.parse(urlConnection.getInputStream()); if(doc.getElementsByTagName("GeometryCollection").getLength()>0) { //String path = doc.getElementsByTagName("GeometryCollection").item(0).getFirstChild().getFirstChild().getNodeName(); String path = doc.getElementsByTagName("GeometryCollection").item(0).getFirstChild().getFirstChild().getFirstChild().getNodeValue() ; //Log.d("xxx","path="+ path); String[] pairs = path.split(" "); String[] lngLat = pairs[0].split(","); // lngLat[0]=longitude lngLat[1]=latitude lngLat[2]=height // src GeoPoint startGP = new GeoPoint((int)(Double.parseDouble(lngLat[1])*1E6),(int)(Double.parseDouble(lngLat[0])*1E6)); mMapView01.getOverlays().add(new MyOverLay(startGP,startGP,1)); GeoPoint gp1; GeoPoint gp2 = startGP; for(int i=1;i<pairs.length;i++) // the last one would be crash { lngLat = pairs[i].split(","); gp1 = gp2; // watch out!   • Android: HttpURLConnection not working properly

    - by giorgiline
    I'm trying to get the cookies from a website after sending user credentials through a POST Request an it seems that it doesn't work in android this way. ¿Am I doing something bad?. Please help. I've searched here in different posts but there's no useful answer. It's curious that this run in a desktop Java implementation it works perfect but it crashes in Android platform. And it is exactly the same code, specifically when calling HttpURLConnection.getHeaderFields(), it also happens with other member methods. It's a simple code and I don't know why the hell isn't working. DESKTOP CODE: This goes just in the main() HttpURLConnection connection = null; OutputStream out = null; try { URL url = new URL("http://www.XXXXXXXX.php"); String charset = "UTF-8"; String postback = "1"; String user = "XXXXXXXXX"; String password = "XXXXXXXX"; String rememberme = "on"; String query = String.format("postback=%s&user=%s&password=%s&rememberme=%s" , URLEncoder.encode(postback, charset) , URLEncoder.encode(user,charset) , URLEncoder.encode(password, charset) , URLEncoder.encode(rememberme, charset)); connection = (HttpURLConnection)url.openConnection(); connection.setRequestMethod("POST"); connection.setRequestProperty("Accept-Charset", charset); connection.setDoOutput(true); connection.setFixedLengthStreamingMode(query.length()); out = connection.getOutputStream (); out.write(query.getBytes(charset)); if (connection.getHeaderFields() == null){ System.out.println("Header null"); }else{ for (String cookie: connection.getHeaderFields().get("Set-Cookie")){ System.out.println(cookie.split(";", 2)[0]); } } } catch (IOException e){ e.printStackTrace(); } finally { try { out.close();} catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace();} connection.disconnect(); } So the output is: login_key=20ad8177db4eca3f057c14a64bafc2c9 FASID=cabf20cc471fcacacdc7dc7e83768880 track=30c8183e4ebbe8b3a57b583166326c77 client-data=%7B%22ism%22%3Afalse%2C%22showm%22%3Afalse%2C%22ts%22%3A1349189669%7D ANDROID CODE: This goes inside doInBackground AsyncTask body HttpURLConnection connection = null; OutputStream out = null; try { URL url = new URL("http://www.XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.php"); String charset = "UTF-8"; String postback = "1"; String user = "XXXXXXXXX"; String password = "XXXXXXXX"; String rememberme = "on"; String query = String.format("postback=%s&user=%s&password=%s&rememberme=%s" , URLEncoder.encode(postback, charset) , URLEncoder.encode(user,charset) , URLEncoder.encode(password, charset) , URLEncoder.encode(rememberme, charset)); connection = (HttpURLConnection)url.openConnection(); connection.setRequestMethod("POST"); connection.setRequestProperty("Accept-Charset", charset); connection.setDoOutput(true); connection.setFixedLengthStreamingMode(query.length()); out = connection.getOutputStream (); out.write(query.getBytes(charset)); if (connection.getHeaderFields() == null){ Log.v(TAG, "Header null"); }else{ for (String cookie: connection.getHeaderFields().get("Set-Cookie")){ Log.v(TAG, cookie.split(";", 2)[0]); } } } catch (IOException e){ e.printStackTrace(); } finally { try { out.close();} catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace();} connection.disconnect(); } And here there is no output, it seems that connection.getHeaderFields() doesn't return result. It takes al least 30 seconds to show the Log: 10-02 16:56:25.918: V/class com.giorgi.myproject.activities.HomeActivity(2596): Header null

  • Strange problem with Google App Engine Java Mail

    - by Velu
    Hi, I'm using the MailService feature of Google App Engine in my application. It works fine in one application without any issues. But the same code doesn't work in another app. I'm not able to figure it out. Please help. Following is the piece of code that I use to send mail. public static void sendHTMLEmail(String from, String fromName, String to, String toName, String subject, String body) { _logger.info("entering ..."); Properties props = new Properties(); Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance(props, null); _logger.info("got mail session ..."); String htmlBody = body; try { Message msg = new MimeMessage(session); _logger.info("created mimemessage ..."); msg.setFrom(new InternetAddress(from, fromName)); _logger.info("from is set ..."); msg.addRecipient(Message.RecipientType.TO, new InternetAddress( to, toName)); _logger.info("recipient is set ..."); msg.setSubject(subject); _logger.info("subject is set ..."); Multipart mp = new MimeMultipart(); MimeBodyPart htmlPart = new MimeBodyPart(); htmlPart.setContent(htmlBody, "text/html"); mp.addBodyPart(htmlPart); _logger.info("body part added ..."); msg.setContent(mp); _logger.info("content is set ..."); Transport.send(msg); _logger.info("email sent successfully."); } catch (AddressException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (MessagingException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); System.err.println(e.getMessage()); } } When I look at the log (on the server admin console), it prints the statement "content is set ..." and after that there is nothing in the log. The mail is not sent. At times I get the following error after the above statement is printed (and the mail is not sent). com.google.appengine.repackaged.com.google.common.base.internal.Finalizer getInheritableThreadLocalsField: Couldn't access Thread.inheritableThreadLocals. Reference finalizer threads will inherit thread local values. But the mail quota usage keeps increasing. Remember, this works fine in one application, but not in other. I'm using the same set of email addresses in both the apps (for from and to). I'm really stuck with this. Appreciate any help. Thank you. Velu

  • How to access Hibernate session from src folder?

    - by firnnauriel
    I would like to know how to access the Service and Domains properly in this sample class placed in src/java folder public class NewsIngestion implements Runnable { private String str; private int num; private Logger log = Logger.getLogger("grails.app"); private static boolean isRunning; private Thread t; private WorkerJobService jobService; private NewsService newsService; public NewsIngestion(String s, int n) { jobService = new WorkerJobService(); newsService = new NewsService(); str = s; num = n; isRunning = false; t = new Thread (this, "NewsIngestion"); } public void run () { while(isRunning){ try{ if(jobService.isJobEnabled("ConsumeFeedsJob") && jobService.lockJob("ConsumeFeedsJob")){ log.info("${this.class.name}: ConsumeFeedsJob started"); try{ // get all sources List sources = (List) InvokerHelper.invokeMethod(RSSFeed.class, "list", null); for(int i = 0; i < sources.size(); i++) { RSSFeed s = (RSSFeed) sources.get(i); // check if it's time to read the source int diff = DateTimeUtil.getSecondsDateDiff(s.getLastChecked(), new Date()); if(s.getLastChecked() == null || diff >= s.getCheckInterval()){ List keyword_list = (List) InvokerHelper.invokeMethod(Keyword.class, "list", null); for(int j = 0; j < keyword_list.size(); j++) { String keyword = (String) keyword_list.get(j); try{ newsService.ingestNewsFromSources(keyword, s); }catch(Exception e){ log.error("${this.class.name}: ${e}"); } log.debug("Completed reading feeds for ${keyword}."); log.info("${this.class.name}: Reading feeds for '${keyword}' (${s.feedName}) took ${Float.toString(st2.getDuration())} second(s)."); } s.setLastChecked(new Date()); InvokerHelper.invokeMethod(RSSFeed.class, "save", null); } log.info("${this.class.name}: Reading feeds for '${s.feedName}' for all keywords took ${Float.toString(st.getDuration())} second(s)."); } }catch(Exception e){ log.error("${this.class.name}: Exception: ${e}"); } log.info("${this.class.name}: ConsumeFeedsJob ended."); // unlock job jobService.unlockJob("ConsumeFeedsJob"); } log.info("alfred: success"); } catch (Exception e){ log.info("alfred exception: " + e.getMessage()); } try { Thread.sleep(5000); } catch (InterruptedException e) { log.info(e.getMessage()); } } } public void start() { if(t == null){ t = new Thread (this, "NewsIngestion"); } if(!isRunning){ isRunning = true; t.start(); } } public void stop() { isRunning = false; } public boolean isRunning() { return isRunning; } } I'm encountering this error message: No Hibernate Session bound to thread, and configuration does not allow creation of non-transactional one here Thanks.

  • Unable to edit a database row from JSF

    - by user1924104
    Hi guys i have a data table in JSF which displays all of the contents of my database table, it displays it fine, i also have a delete function that can successfully delete from the database fine and updates the data table fine however when i try to update the database i get the error java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Cannot convert richard.test.User@129d62a7 of type class richard.test.User to long below is the code that i have been using to delete the rows in the database that is working fine : public void delete(long userID) { PreparedStatement ps = null; Connection con = null; if (userID != 0) { try { Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"); con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test", "root", "root"); String sql = "DELETE FROM user1 WHERE userId=" + userID; ps = con.prepareStatement(sql); int i = ps.executeUpdate(); if (i > 0) { System.out.println("Row deleted successfully"); } } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } finally { try { con.close(); ps.close(); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } i simply wanted to edit the above code so it would update the records instead of deleting them so i edited it to look like : public void editData(long userID) { PreparedStatement ps = null; Connection con = null; if (userID != 0) { try { Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"); con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test", "root", "root"); String sql = "UPDATE user1 set name = '"+name+"', email = '"+ email +"', address = '"+address+"' WHERE userId=" + userID; ps = con.prepareStatement(sql); int i = ps.executeUpdate(); if (i > 0) { System.out.println("Row updated successfully"); } } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } finally { try { con.close(); ps.close(); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } and the xhmtl is : <p:dataTable id="dataTable" var="u" value="#{userBean.getUserList()}" paginator="true" rows="10" editable="true" paginatorTemplate="{CurrentPageReport} {FirstPageLink} {PreviousPageLink} {PageLinks} {NextPageLink} {LastPageLink} {RowsPerPageDropdown}" rowsPerPageTemplate="5,10,15"> <p:column> <f:facet name="header"> User ID </f:facet> #{u.userID} </p:column> <p:column> <f:facet name="header"> Name </f:facet> #{u.name} </p:column> <p:column> <f:facet name="header"> Email </f:facet> #{u.email} </p:column> <p:column> <f:facet name="header"> Address </f:facet> #{u.address} </p:column> <p:column> <f:facet name="header"> Created Date </f:facet> #{u.created_date} </p:column> <p:column> <f:facet name="header"> Delete </f:facet> <h:commandButton value="Delete" action="#{user.delete(u.userID)}" /> </p:column> <p:column> <f:facet name="header"> Delete </f:facet> <h:commandButton value="Edit" action="#{user.editData(u)}" /> </p:column> currently when you press the edit button it will only update it with the same values as i haven't yet managed to get the datatable to be editable with the database, i have seen a few examples with an array list where the data table gets its values from but never a database so if you have any advice on this too it would be great thanks

  • Why is parsing a jSON response to a jQUERY ajax request not working

    - by Ankur
    I know there are several similar questions on SO, I have used some of them to get this far. I am trying to list a set of urls that match my input values. I have a servlet which takes some input e.g. "aus" in the example below and returns some output using out.print() e.g. the two urls I have shown below. EXAMPLE Input: "aus" Output: [{"url":"http://dbpedia.org/resource/Stifel_Nicolaus"},{"url":"http://sempedia.org/ontology/object/Australia"}] Which is exactly what I want. I have seen that firebug doesn't seem to have anything in the response section despite having called out.print(jsonString); and it seems that out.print(jsonString); is working as expected which suggests that the variable 'jsonString' contains the expected values. However I am not exactly sure what is wrong. -------- The jQuery --------- $(document).ready(function() { $("#input").keyup(function() { var input = $("#input").val(); //$("#output").html(input); ajaxCall(input); }); }); function ajaxCall(input) { // alert(input); $.ajax({ url: "InstantSearchServlet", data: "property="+input, beforeSend: function(x) { if(x && x.overrideMimeType) { x.overrideMimeType("application/j-son;charset=UTF-8"); } }, dataType: "json", success: function(data) { for (var i = 0, len = datalength; i < len; ++i) { var urlData = data[i]; $("#output").html(urlData.url); } } }); } ------ The Servlet that calls the DAO class - and returns the results ------- public class InstantSearchServlet extends HttpServlet{ private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws IOException, ServletException { System.out.println("You called?"); response.setContentType("application/json"); PrintWriter out = response.getWriter(); InstantSearch is = new InstantSearch(); String input = (String)request.getParameter("property"); System.out.println(input); try { ArrayList<String> urllist; urllist = is.getUrls(input); String jsonString = convertToJSON(urllist); out.print(jsonString); System.out.println(jsonString); } catch (SQLException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } } private String convertToJSON(ArrayList<String> urllist) { Iterator<String> itr = urllist.iterator(); JSONArray jArray = new JSONArray(); int i = 0; while (itr.hasNext()) { i++; JSONObject json = new JSONObject(); String url = itr.next(); try { json.put("url",url); } catch (JSONException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } jArray.put(json); } String results = jArray.toString(); return results; } }

  • java will this threading setup work or what can i be doing wrong

    - by Erik
    Im a bit unsure and have to get advice. I have the: public class MyApp extends JFrame{ And from there i do; MyServer = new MyServer (this); MyServer.execute(); MyServer is a: public class MyServer extends SwingWorker<String, Object> { MyServer is doing listen_socket.accept() in the doInBackground() and on connection it create a new class Connection implements Runnable { I have the belove DbHelper that are a singleton. It holds an Sqlite connected. Im initiating it in the above MyApp and passing references all the way in to my runnable: class Connection implements Runnable { My question is what will happen if there are two simultaneous read or `write? My thought here was the all methods in the singleton are synchronized and would put all calls in the queue waiting to get a lock on the synchronized method. Will this work or what can i change? public final class DbHelper { private boolean initalized = false; private String HomePath = ""; private File DBFile; private static final String SYSTEM_TABLE = "systemtable"; Connection con = null; private Statement stmt; private static final ContentProviderHelper instance = new ContentProviderHelper (); public static ContentProviderHelper getInstance() { return instance; } private DbHelper () { if (!initalized) { initDB(); initalized = true; } } private void initDB() { DBFile = locateDBFile(); try { Class.forName("org.sqlite.JDBC"); // create a database connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:sqlite:J:/workspace/workComputer/user_ptpp"); } catch (SQLException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } private File locateDBFile() { File f = null; try{ HomePath = System.getProperty("user.dir"); System.out.println("HomePath: " + HomePath); f = new File(HomePath + "/user_ptpp"); if (f.canRead()) return f; else { boolean success = f.createNewFile(); if (success) { System.out.println("File did not exist and was created " + HomePath); // File did not exist and was created } else { System.out.println("File already exists " + HomePath); // File already exists } } } catch (IOException e) { System.out.println("Maybe try a new directory. • Java ME scorecard with vector and multiple input fields/screens

    - by proximity
    I have made a scorecard with 5 holes, for each a input field (shots), and a image is shown. • Problem with ArrayList

    - by Houssem
    Hello, I'm reading an xml file from resources, that file contains a list of travel agencies location and adresses and i'm trying to put this list after parsing in an arraylist to use it with maps. So each time I use agencies.add(agency) it adds it to the array but also changes all previous items with the new value. Here's my code if someone can help or explain : public class Main extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); TextView myXmlContent = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.my_xml); String stringXmlContent; try { stringXmlContent = getEventsFromAnXML(this); myXmlContent.setText(stringXmlContent); } catch (XmlPullParserException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } } boolean na=false; List<Agency> agencies = new ArrayList(); Agency agency=new Agency(); int i=0; private String getEventsFromAnXML(Activity activity) throws XmlPullParserException, IOException { StringBuffer stringBuffer = new StringBuffer(); Resources res = activity.getResources(); XmlResourceParser xpp = res.getXml(R.xml.hotels); xpp.next(); int eventType = xpp.getEventType(); while (eventType != XmlPullParser.END_DOCUMENT) { if(eventType == XmlPullParser.START_DOCUMENT) { stringBuffer.append("--- Start XML ---"); } else if(eventType == XmlPullParser.START_TAG) { if (xpp.getName().equals("DataBase")){ agency.ResetTsp(); String name=xpp.getAttributeValue(null, "name"); agency.setTspTitle(name); na=true; stringBuffer.append("\nAgence : "+ name); } if (xpp.getName().equals("Title")){ xpp.next(); agency.setTitle(xpp.getText()); stringBuffer.append("\nFiliale: "+xpp.getText()); xpp.nextTag(); } if (xpp.getName().equals("Address")){ xpp.next(); agency.setAddress(xpp.getText()); stringBuffer.append("\nAdresse: "+xpp.getText()); xpp.nextTag(); } if (xpp.getName().equals("Phone") && na==true){ xpp.next(); agency.setTspPhone(xpp.getText()); stringBuffer.append("\nPhone: "+xpp.getText()); xpp.nextTag(); }else{ if (xpp.getName().equals("Phone") && na==false){ xpp.next(); agency.setPhone(xpp.getText()); stringBuffer.append("\nPhone: "+xpp.getText()); xpp.nextTag(); } } if (xpp.getName().equals("Fax")){ xpp.next(); agency.setFax(xpp.getText()); stringBuffer.append("\nFax: "+xpp.getText()); xpp.nextTag(); } if (xpp.getName().equals("e-Mail")){ xpp.next(); agency.setMail(xpp.getText()); stringBuffer.append("\ne-Mail: "+xpp.getText()); xpp.nextTag(); } if (xpp.getName().equals("Latitude")){ xpp.next(); agency.setLatitude(Double.parseDouble(xpp.getText())); stringBuffer.append("\nLatitude: "+xpp.getText()); xpp.nextTag(); } if (xpp.getName().equals("Longitude")){ xpp.next(); agency.setLongitude(Double.parseDouble(xpp.getText())); stringBuffer.append("\nLongitude: "+xpp.getText()); } } else if(eventType == XmlPullParser.END_TAG) { if (xpp.getName().equals("DataBase") || xpp.getName().equals("Agency")){ agencies.add(i,agency); i=i+1; Agency agency = new Agency(); } } eventType = xpp.next(); } stringBuffer.append("\n--- End XML ---"); return stringBuffer.toString(); } } thank you

  • How to generalize a method call in Java (to avoid code duplication)

    - by dln385
    I have a process that needs to call a method and return its value. However, there are several different methods that this process may need to call, depending on the situation. If I could pass the method and its arguments to the process (like in Python), then this would be no problem. However, I don't know of any way to do this in Java. Here's a concrete example. (This example uses Apache ZooKeeper, but you don't need to know anything about ZooKeeper to understand the example.) The ZooKeeper object has several methods that will fail if the network goes down. In this case, I always want to retry the method. To make this easy, I made a "BetterZooKeeper" class that inherits the ZooKeeper class, and all of its methods automatically retry on failure. This is what the code looked like: public class BetterZooKeeper extends ZooKeeper { private void waitForReconnect() { // logic } @Override public Stat exists(String path, Watcher watcher) { while (true) { try { return super.exists(path, watcher); } catch (KeeperException e) { // We will retry. } waitForReconnect(); } } @Override public byte[] getData(String path, boolean watch, Stat stat) { while (true) { try { return super.getData(path, watch, stat); } catch (KeeperException e) { // We will retry. } waitForReconnect(); } } @Override public void delete(String path, int version) { while (true) { try { super.delete(path, version); return; } catch (KeeperException e) { // We will retry. } waitForReconnect(); } } } (In the actual program there is much more logic and many more methods that I took out of the example for simplicity.) We can see that I'm using the same retry logic, but the arguments, method call, and return type are all different for each of the methods. Here's what I did to eliminate the duplication of code: public class BetterZooKeeper extends ZooKeeper { private void waitForReconnect() { // logic } @Override public Stat exists(final String path, final Watcher watcher) { return new RetryableZooKeeperAction<Stat>() { @Override public Stat action() { return BetterZooKeeper.super.exists(path, watcher); } }.run(); } @Override public byte[] getData(final String path, final boolean watch, final Stat stat) { return new RetryableZooKeeperAction<byte[]>() { @Override public byte[] action() { return BetterZooKeeper.super.getData(path, watch, stat); } }.run(); } @Override public void delete(final String path, final int version) { new RetryableZooKeeperAction<Object>() { @Override public Object action() { BetterZooKeeper.super.delete(path, version); return null; } }.run(); return; } private abstract class RetryableZooKeeperAction<T> { public abstract T action(); public final T run() { while (true) { try { return action(); } catch (KeeperException e) { // We will retry. } waitForReconnect(); } } } } The RetryableZooKeeperAction is parameterized with the return type of the function. The run() method holds the retry logic, and the action() method is a placeholder for whichever ZooKeeper method needs to be run. Each of the public methods of BetterZooKeeper instantiates an anonymous inner class that is a subclass of the RetryableZooKeeperAction inner class, and it overrides the action() method. The local variables are (strangely enough) implicitly passed to the action() method, which is possible because they are final. In the end, this approach does work and it does eliminate the duplication of the retry logic. However, it has two major drawbacks: (1) it creates a new object every time a method is called, and (2) it's ugly and hardly readable. Also I had to workaround the 'delete' method which has a void return value. So, here is my question: is there a better way to do this in Java? This can't be a totally uncommon task, and other languages (like Python) make it easier by allowing methods to be passed. I suspect there might be a way to do this through reflection, but I haven't been able to wrap my head around it.

  • -Java- Swing GUI - Moving around components specifically with layouts

    - by Xemiru Scarlet Sanzenin
    I'm making a little test GUI for something I'm making. However, problems occur with the positioning of the panels. public winInit() { super("Chatterbox - Login"); try { UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName()); } catch(ClassNotFoundException e) { } catch (InstantiationException e) { } catch (IllegalAccessException e) { } catch (UnsupportedLookAndFeelException e) { } setSize(300,135); pn1 = new JPanel(); pn2 = new JPanel(); pn3 = new JPanel(); l1 = new JLabel("Username"); l2 = new JLabel("Password"); l3 = new JLabel("Random text here"); l4 = new JLabel("Server Address"); l5 = new JLabel("No address set."); i1 = new JTextField(10); p1 = new JPasswordField(10); b1 = new JButton("Connect"); b2 = new JButton("Register"); b3 = new JButton("Set IP"); l4.setBounds(10, 12, getDim(l4).width, getDim(l4).height); l1.setBounds(10, 35, getDim(l1).width, getDim(l1).height); l2.setBounds(10, 60, getDim(l2).width, getDim(l2).height); l3.setBounds(10, 85, getDim(l3).width, getDim(l3).height); l5.setBounds(l4.getBounds().width + 14, 12, l5.getPreferredSize().width, l5.getPreferredSize().height); l5.setForeground(Color.gray); i1.setBounds(getDim(l1).width + 15, 35, getDim(i1).width, getDim(i1).height); p1.setBounds(getDim(l1).width + 15, 60, getDim(p1).width, getDim(p1).height); b1.setBounds(getDim(l1).width + getDim(i1).width + 23, 34, getDim(b2).width, getDim(b1).height - 5); b2.setBounds(getDim(l1).width + getDim(i1).width + 23, 60, getDim(b2).width, getDim(b2).height - 5); b3.setBounds(getDim(l1).width + getDim(i1).width + 23, 10, etDim(b2).width, getDim(b3).height - 5); b1.addActionListener(clickButton); b2.addActionListener(clickButton); b3.addActionListener(clickButton); pn1.setLayout(new FlowLayout(FlowLayout.RIGHT)); pn2.setLayout(new FlowLayout(FlowLayout.RIGHT)); pn1.add(l1); pn1.add(i1); pn1.add(b1); pn2.add(l2); pn2.add(p1); pn2.add(b2); add(pn1); add(pn2); } I am attempting to use FlowLayout to position the panels in the way desired. I'd use BorderLayout while adding, but the vertical spacing is too far away when I just use directions closest to one another. The output of this code is to create a window, 300,150, place whatever's in the two panels in the exact same spaces. Yes, I realize there's useless code there with setBounds(), but that was just me screwing around with Absolute Positioning, which wasn't working out for me either.

  • Java deadlock problem....

    - by markovuksanovic
    I am using java sockets for communication. On the client side I have some processing and at this point I send an object to the cient. The code is as follows: while (true) { try { Socket server = new Socket("localhost", 3000); OutputStream os = server.getOutputStream(); InputStream is = server.getInputStream(); CommMessage commMessage = new CommMessageImpl(); ByteArrayOutputStream bos = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(bos); oos.writeObject(commMessage); os.write(bos.toByteArray()); os.flush(); byte[] buff = new byte[512]; int bytesRead = 0; ByteArrayOutputStream receivedObject = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); while ((bytesRead = is.read(buff)) > -1) { receivedObject.write(buff, 0, bytesRead); System.out.println(receivedObject); } os.close(); Thread.sleep(10000); } catch (IOException e) { } catch (InterruptedException e) { } } Next on the server side I have the following code to read the object and write the response (Which is just an echo message) public void startServer() { Socket client = null; try { server = new ServerSocket(3000); logger.log(Level.INFO, "Waiting for connections."); client = server.accept(); logger.log(Level.INFO, "Accepted a connection from: " + client.getInetAddress()); os = new ObjectOutputStream(client.getOutputStream()); is = new ObjectInputStream(client.getInputStream()); // Read contents of the stream and store it into a byte array. byte[] buff = new byte[512]; int bytesRead = 0; ByteArrayOutputStream receivedObject = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); while ((bytesRead = is.read(buff)) > -1) { receivedObject.write(buff, 0, bytesRead); } // Check if received stream is CommMessage or not contents. CommMessage commMessage = getCommMessage(receivedObject); if (commMessage != null) { commMessage.setSessionState(this.sessionManager.getState().getState()); ByteArrayOutputStream bos = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(bos); oos.writeObject(commMessage); os.write(bos.toByteArray()); System.out.println(commMessage.getCommMessageType()); } else { processData(receivedObject, this.sessionManager); } os.flush(); } catch (IOException e) { } finally { try { is.close(); os.close(); client.close(); server.close(); } catch (IOException e) { } } } The above code works ok if I do not try to read data on the client side (If i exclude the code related to reading). But if I have that code, for some reason, I get some kind of deadlock when accessing input streams. Any ideas what I might have done wrong? Thanks in advance.

  • Serious problem with WCF, GridViews, Callbacks and ExecuteReaders exceptions.

    - by barjed
    Hi, I have this problem that is driving me insane. I have a project to deliver before Thursday. Basically an app consiting of three components that communicate with each other in WCF. I have one console app and one Windows Forms app. The console app is a server that's connected to the database. You can add records to it via the Windows Forms client that connectes with the server through the WCF. The code for the client: namespace BankAdministratorClient { [CallbackBehavior(ConcurrencyMode = ConcurrencyMode.Single, UseSynchronizationContext = false)] public partial class Form1 : Form, BankServverReference.BankServerCallback { private BankServverReference.BankServerClient server = null; private SynchronizationContext interfaceContext = null; public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); interfaceContext = SynchronizationContext.Current; server = new BankServverReference.BankServerClient(new InstanceContext(this), "TcpBinding"); server.Open(); server.Subscribe(); refreshGridView(""); } public void refreshClients(string s) { SendOrPostCallback callback = delegate(object state) { refreshGridView(s); }; interfaceContext.Post(callback, s); } public void refreshGridView(string s) { try { userGrid.DataSource = server.refreshDatabaseConnection().Tables[0]; } catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.ToString()); } } private void buttonAdd_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { server.addNewAccount(Int32.Parse(inputPIN.Text), Int32.Parse(inputBalance.Text)); } private void Form1_FormClosing(object sender, FormClosingEventArgs e) { try { server.Unsubscribe(); server.Close(); }catch{} } } } The code for the server: namespace SSRfinal_tcp { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("The server is starting up")); using (ServiceHost server = new ServiceHost(typeof(BankServer))) { server.Open(); Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("The server is running")); Console.ReadKey(); } } } [ServiceBehavior(ConcurrencyMode = ConcurrencyMode.Single, InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerCall, IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults = true)] public class BankServer : IBankServerService { private static DatabaseLINQConnectionDataContext database = new DatabaseLINQConnectionDataContext(); private static List<IBankServerServiceCallback> subscribers = new List<IBankServerServiceCallback>(); public void Subscribe() { try { IBankServerServiceCallback callback = OperationContext.Current.GetCallbackChannel<IBankServerServiceCallback>(); if (!subscribers.Contains(callback)) subscribers.Add(callback); Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("A new Bank Administrator has connected")); } catch { Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("A Bank Administrator has failed to connect")); } } public void Unsubscribe() { try { IBankServerServiceCallback callback = OperationContext.Current.GetCallbackChannel<IBankServerServiceCallback>(); if (subscribers.Contains(callback)) subscribers.Remove(callback); Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("A Bank Administrator has been signed out from the connection list")); } catch { Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("A Bank Administrator has failed to sign out from the connection list")); } } public DataSet refreshDatabaseConnection() { var q = from a in database.GetTable<Account>() select a; DataTable dt = q.toTable(rec => new object[] { q }); DataSet data = new DataSet(); data.Tables.Add(dt); Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("A Bank Administrator has requested a database data listing refresh")); return data; } public void addNewAccount(int pin, int balance) { Account acc = new Account() { PIN = pin, Balance = balance, IsApproved = false }; database.Accounts.InsertOnSubmit(acc); database.SubmitChanges(); database.addNewAccount(pin, balance, false); subscribers.ForEach(delegate(IBankServerServiceCallback callback) { callback.refreshClients("New operation is pending approval."); }); } } } This is really simple and it works for a single window. However, when you open multiple instances of the client window and try to add a new record, the windows that is performing the insert operation crashes with the ExecuteReader error and the " requires an open and available connection. the connection's current state is connecting" bla bla stuff. I have no idea what's going on. Please advise.

  • How to connect to bluetoothbee device using j2me?

    - by user1500412
    I developed a simple bluetooth connection application in j2me. I try it on emulator, both server and client can found each other, but when I deploy the application to blackberry mobile phone and connect to a bluetoothbee device it says service search no records. What could it be possibly wrong? is it j2me can not find a service in bluetoothbee? The j2me itself succeed to found the bluetoothbee device, but why it can not find the service? My code is below. What I don't understand is the UUID? how to set UUID for unknown source? since I didn't know the UUID for the bluetoothbee device. class SearchingDevice extends Canvas implements Runnable,CommandListener,DiscoveryListener{ //...... public SearchingDevice(MenuUtama midlet, Display display){ this.display = display; this.midlet = midlet; t = new Thread(this); t.start(); timer = new Timer(); task = new TestTimerTask(); /*--------------------Device List------------------------------*/ select = new Command("Pilih",Command.OK,0); • Android remote service doesn't call service methods

    - by tarantel
    Hello, I'm developing a GPS tracking software on android. I need IPC to control the service from different activities. So I decide to develop a remote service with AIDL. This wasn't a big problem but now it's always running into the methods of the interface and not into those of my service class. Maybe someone could help me? Here my ADIL file: package test.de.android.tracker interface ITrackingServiceRemote { void startTracking(in long trackId); void stopTracking(); void pauseTracking(); void resumeTracking(in long trackId); long trackingState(); } And the here a short version of my service class: public class TrackingService extends Service implements LocationListener{ private LocationManager mLocationManager; private TrackDb db; private long trackId; private boolean isTracking = false; @Override public void onCreate() { super.onCreate(); mNotificationManager = (NotificationManager) this .getSystemService(NOTIFICATION_SERVICE); mLocationManager = (LocationManager) getSystemService(LOCATION_SERVICE); db = new TrackDb(this.getApplicationContext()); } @Override public void onStart(Intent intent, int startId) { super.onStart(intent, startId); } @Override public void onDestroy(){ //TODO super.onDestroy(); } @Override public IBinder onBind(Intent intent){ return this.mBinder; } private IBinder mBinder = new ITrackingServiceRemote.Stub() { public void startTracking(long trackId) throws RemoteException { TrackingService.this.startTracking(trackId); } public void pauseTracking() throws RemoteException { TrackingService.this.pauseTracking(); } public void resumeTracking(long trackId) throws RemoteException { TrackingService.this.resumeTracking(trackId); } public void stopTracking() throws RemoteException { TrackingService.this.stopTracking(); } public long trackingState() throws RemoteException { long state = TrackingService.this.trackingState(); return state; } }; public synchronized void startTracking(long trackId) { // request updates every 250 meters or 0 sec this.trackId = trackId; mLocationManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 0, 250, this); isTracking = true; } public synchronized long trackingState() { if(isTracking){ return trackId; } else return -1; } public synchronized void stopTracking() { if(isTracking){ mLocationManager.removeUpdates(this); isTracking = false; } else Log.i(TAG, "Could not stop because service is not tracking at the moment"); } public synchronized void resumeTracking(long trackId) { if(!isTracking){ this.trackId = trackId; mLocationManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 0, 250, this); isTracking = true; } else Log.i(TAG, "Could not resume because service is tracking already track " + this.trackId); } public synchronized void pauseTracking() { if(isTracking){ mLocationManager.removeUpdates(this); isTracking = false; } else Log.i(TAG, "Could not pause because service is not tracking at the moment"); } public void onLocationChanged(Location location) { //TODO } For easier access from the client I wrote a ServiceManager class which sets up the ServiceConnection and you can call the service methods. Here my code for this: public class TrackingServiceManager{ private static final String TAG = "TrackingServiceManager"; private ITrackingServiceRemote mService = null; private Context mContext; private Boolean isBound = false; private ServiceConnection mServiceConnection; public TrackingServiceManager(Context ctx){ this.mContext = ctx; } public void start(long trackId) { if (isBound && mService != null) { try { mService.startTracking(trackId); } catch (RemoteException e) { Log.e(TAG, "Could not start tracking!",e); } } else Log.i(TAG, "No Service bound! 1"); } public void stop(){ if (isBound && mService != null) { try { mService.stopTracking(); } catch (RemoteException e) { Log.e(TAG, "Could not stop tracking!",e); } } else Log.i(TAG, "No Service bound!"); } public void pause(){ if (isBound && mService != null) { try { mService.pauseTracking(); } catch (RemoteException e) { Log.e(TAG, "Could not pause tracking!",e); } } else Log.i(TAG, "No Service bound!"); } public void resume(long trackId){ if (isBound && mService != null) { try { mService.resumeTracking(trackId); } catch (RemoteException e) { Log.e(TAG, "Could not resume tracking!",e); } } else Log.i(TAG, "No Service bound!"); } public float state(){ if (isBound && mService != null) { try { return mService.trackingState(); } catch (RemoteException e) { Log.e(TAG, "Could not resume tracking!",e); return -1; } } else Log.i(TAG, "No Service bound!"); return -1; } /** * Method for binding the Service with client */ public boolean connectService(){ mServiceConnection = new ServiceConnection() { @Override public void onServiceConnected(ComponentName name, IBinder service) { TrackingServiceManager.this.mService = ITrackingServiceRemote.Stub.asInterface(service); } } @Override public void onServiceDisconnected(ComponentName name) { if (mService != null) { mService = null; } } }; Intent mIntent = new Intent("test.de.android.tracker.action.intent.TrackingService"); this.isBound = this.mContext.bindService(mIntent, mServiceConnection, Context.BIND_AUTO_CREATE); return this.isBound; } public void disconnectService(){ this.mContext.unbindService(mServiceConnection); this.isBound = false; } } If i now try to call a method from an activity for example start(trackId) nothing happens. The binding is OK. When debugging it always runs into the startTracking() in the generated ITrackingServiceRemote.java file and not into my TrackingService class. Where is the problem? I can't find anything wrong. Thanks in advance! Tobias

  • Android App Crashes On Second Run

    - by user1091286
    My app runs fine on first run. On the Menu I added two choices options and quit. options which set up a new intent who goes to a PreferenceActivity and quit which simply call: "android.os.Process.killProcess(android.os.Process.myPid());" On the second time I run my app (after I quit from inside the emulator) it crashes.. Ideas? the menu is called by the foolowing code: @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.menu , menu); return true; } - @Override public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) { // Set up a new intent between the updater service and the main screen Intent options = new Intent(this, OptionsScreenActivity.class); • Httpsession with Spring 3 MVC

    - by vipul12389
    I want to use httpsession in Spring 3 MVC..i have searched all the web and got this solution..at http://forum.springsource.org/showthread.php?98850-Adding-to-stuff-to-the-session-while-using-ResponseBody Basically, My application auto authenticates user by getting winId and authorizes through LDAP..(Its a intranet site) Here is the flow of the application, 1. User enters Aplication url (http://localhost:8082/eIA_Mock_5) it has a welcome page (index.jsp) Index.jsp gets winId through jQuery and hits login.html (through Ajax) and passes windowsId login.html (Controller) authenticates through LDAP and gives back 'Valid' String as a response javascript, upon getting the correct response, redirects/loads welcome page i.e. goes to localhost:8082/eIA_Mock_5/welcome.html Now, i have filter associated with it..which checks for is session valid for each incoming request..Now the problem is even though i set data on to httpsession, yet the filter or any other controller fails to get the data through session as a result it doesnt proceeds further.. here is the code..and could you suggest what is wrong actually ?? Home_Controller.java @Controller public class Home_Controller { public static Log logger = LogFactory.getLog(Home_Controller.class); @RequestMapping(value={"/welcome"}) public ModelAndView loadWelcomePage(HttpServletRequest request,HttpServletResponse response) { ModelAndView mdv = new ModelAndView(); • How can I update a Jtextarea once? (mysql side-?)

    - by user1294196
    Ok what I've been trying to do is figure out how to make it so when I press the search button on my program the code that is currently just being printed to the console will print to the text area I have. I can't figure out how to do this and I've searched google and still found no answer. And while I'm at it if anyone could help me figure out how to send this same line of information to a mysql database that would help greatly. package GTE; import java.awt.EventQueue; public class GTE { private JFrame frmGte; • Upload File to Windows Azure Blob in Chunks through ASP.NET MVC, JavaScript and HTML5

Blob storage provides 99.9% availability with easy-to-use API through .NET SDK and HTTP REST. For example, we can store JavaScript files, images, documents in blob storage when we are building an ASP.NET web application on a Web Role in Windows Azure. Or we can store our VHD files in blob and mount it as a hard drive in our cloud service. If you are familiar with Windows Azure, you should know that there are two kinds of blob: page blob and block blob. The page blob is optimized for random read and write, which is very useful when you need to store VHD files. The block blob is optimized for sequential/chunk read and write, which has more common usage. Since we can upload block blob in blocks through BlockBlob.PutBlock, and them commit them as a whole blob with invoking the BlockBlob.PutBlockList, it is very powerful to upload large files, as we can upload blocks in parallel, and provide pause-resume feature. There are many documents, articles and blog posts described on how to upload a block blob. Most of them are focus on the server side, which means when you had received a big file, stream or binaries, how to upload them into blob storage in blocks through .NET SDK.  But the problem is, how can we upload these large files from client side, for example, a browser. This questioned to me when I was working with a Chinese customer to help them build a network disk production on top of azure. The end users upload their files from the web portal, and then the files will be stored in blob storage from the Web Role. My goal is to find the best way to transform the file from client (end user’s machine) to the server (Web Role) through browser. In this post I will demonstrate and describe what I had done, to upload large file in chunks with high speed, and save them as blocks into Windows Azure Blob Storage.   Traditional Upload, Works with Limitation The simplest way to implement this requirement is to create a web page with a form that contains a file input element and a submit button. 1: @using (Html.BeginForm("About", "Index", FormMethod.Post, new { enctype = "multipart/form-data" })) 2: { 3: <input type="file" name="file" /> 4: <input type="submit" value="upload" /> 5: } And then in the backend controller, we retrieve the whole content of this file and upload it in to the blob storage through .NET SDK. We can split the file in blocks and upload them in parallel and commit. The code had been well blogged in the community. 1: [HttpPost] 2: public ActionResult About(HttpPostedFileBase file) 3: { 4: var container = _client.GetContainerReference("test"); 5: container.CreateIfNotExists(); 6: var blob = container.GetBlockBlobReference(file.FileName); 7: var blockDataList = new Dictionary<string, byte[]>(); 8: using (var stream = file.InputStream) 9: { 10: var blockSizeInKB = 1024; 11: var offset = 0; 12: var index = 0; 13: while (offset < stream.Length) 14: { 15: var readLength = Math.Min(1024 * blockSizeInKB, (int)stream.Length - offset); 16: var blockData = new byte[readLength]; 17: offset += stream.Read(blockData, 0, readLength); 18: blockDataList.Add(Convert.ToBase64String(BitConverter.GetBytes(index)), blockData); 19:  20: index++; 21: } 22: } 23:  24: Parallel.ForEach(blockDataList, (bi) => 25: { 26: blob.PutBlock(bi.Key, new MemoryStream(bi.Value), null); 27: }); 28: blob.PutBlockList(blockDataList.Select(b => b.Key).ToArray()); 29:  30: return RedirectToAction("About"); 31: } This works perfect if we selected an image, a music or a small video to upload. But if I selected a large file, let’s say a 6GB HD-movie, after upload for about few minutes the page will be shown as below and the upload will be terminated. In ASP.NET there is a limitation of request length and the maximized request length is defined in the web.config file. It’s a number which less than about 4GB. So if we want to upload a really big file, we cannot simply implement in this way. Also, in Windows Azure, a cloud service network load balancer will terminate the connection if exceed the timeout period. From my test the timeout looks like 2 - 3 minutes. Hence, when we need to upload a large file we cannot just use the basic HTML elements. Besides the limitation mentioned above, the simple HTML file upload cannot provide rich upload experience such as chunk upload, pause and pause-resume. So we need to find a better way to upload large file from the client to the server.   Upload in Chunks through HTML5 and JavaScript In order to break those limitation mentioned above we will try to upload the large file in chunks. This takes some benefit to us such as - No request size limitation: Since we upload in chunks, we can define the request size for each chunks regardless how big the entire file is. - No timeout problem: The size of chunks are controlled by us, which means we should be able to make sure request for each chunk upload will not exceed the timeout period of both ASP.NET and Windows Azure load balancer. It was a big challenge to upload big file in chunks until we have HTML5. There are some new features and improvements introduced in HTML5 and we will use them to implement our solution.   In HTML5, the File interface had been improved with a new method called “slice”. It can be used to read part of the file by specifying the start byte index and the end byte index. For example if the entire file was 1024 bytes, file.slice(512, 768) will read the part of this file from the 512nd byte to 768th byte, and return a new object of interface called "Blob”, which you can treat as an array of bytes. In fact,  a Blob object represents a file-like object of immutable, raw data. The File interface is based on Blob, inheriting blob functionality and expanding it to support files on the user's system. For more information about the Blob please refer here. File and Blob is very useful to implement the chunk upload. We will use File interface to represent the file the user selected from the browser and then use File.slice to read the file in chunks in the size we wanted. For example, if we wanted to upload a 10MB file with 512KB chunks, then we can read it in 512KB blobs by using File.slice in a loop.   Assuming we have a web page as below. User can select a file, an input box to specify the block size in KB and a button to start upload. 1: <div> 2: <input type="file" id="upload_files" name="files[]" /><br /> 3: Block Size: <input type="number" id="block_size" value="512" name="block_size" />KB<br /> 4: <input type="button" id="upload_button_blob" name="upload" value="upload (blob)" /> 5: </div> Then we can have the JavaScript function to upload the file in chunks when user clicked the button. 1: <script type="text/javascript"> 1: 2: $(function () { 3: $("#upload_button_blob").click(function () { 4: }); 5: });</script> Firstly we need to ensure the client browser supports the interfaces we are going to use. Just try to invoke the File, Blob and FormData from the “window” object. If any of them is “undefined” the condition result will be “false” which means your browser doesn’t support these premium feature and it’s time for you to get your browser updated. FormData is another new feature we are going to use in the future. It could generate a temporary form for us. We will use this interface to create a form with chunk and associated metadata when invoked the service through ajax. 1: $("#upload_button_blob").click(function () { 2: // assert the browser support html5 3: if (window.File && window.Blob && window.FormData) { 4: alert("Your brwoser is awesome, let's rock!"); 5: } 6: else { 7: alert("Oh man plz update to a modern browser before try is cool stuff out."); 8: return; 9: } 10: }); Each browser supports these interfaces by their own implementation and currently the Blob, File and File.slice are supported by Chrome 21, FireFox 13, IE 10, Opera 12 and Safari 5.1 or higher. After that we worked on the files the user selected one by one since in HTML5, user can select multiple files in one file input box. 1: var files = $("#upload_files")[0].files; 2: for (var i = 0; i < files.length; i++) { 3: var file = files[i]; 4: var fileSize = file.size; 5: var fileName = file.name; 6: } Next, we calculated the start index and end index for each chunks based on the size the user specified from the browser. We put them into an array with the file name and the index, which will be used when we upload chunks into Windows Azure Blob Storage as blocks since we need to specify the target blob name and the block index. At the same time we will store the list of all indexes into another variant which will be used to commit blocks into blob in Azure Storage once all chunks had been uploaded successfully. 1: $("#upload_button_blob").click(function () { 2: // assert the browser support html5 3: ... ... 4: // start to upload each files in chunks 5: var files = $("#upload_files")[0].files; 6: for (var i = 0; i < files.length; i++) { 7: var file = files[i]; 8: var fileSize = file.size; 9: var fileName = file.name; 10:  11: // calculate the start and end byte index for each blocks(chunks) 12: // with the index, file name and index list for future using 13: var blockSizeInKB = $("#block_size").val(); 14: var blockSize = blockSizeInKB * 1024; 15: var blocks = []; 16: var offset = 0; 17: var index = 0; 18: var list = ""; 19: while (offset < fileSize) { 20: var start = offset; 21: var end = Math.min(offset + blockSize, fileSize); 22:  23: blocks.push({ 24: name: fileName, 25: index: index, 26: start: start, 27: end: end 28: }); 29: list += index + ","; 30:  31: offset = end; 32: index++; 33: } 34: } 35: }); Now we have all chunks’ information ready. The next step should be upload them one by one to the server side, and at the server side when received a chunk it will upload as a block into Blob Storage, and finally commit them with the index list through BlockBlobClient.PutBlockList. But since all these invokes are ajax calling, which means not synchronized call. So we need to introduce a new JavaScript library to help us coordinate the asynchronize operation, which named “async.js”. You can download this JavaScript library here, and you can find the document here. I will not explain this library too much in this post. We will put all procedures we want to execute as a function array, and pass into the proper function defined in async.js to let it help us to control the execution sequence, in series or in parallel. Hence we will define an array and put the function for chunk upload into this array. 1: $("#upload_button_blob").click(function () { 2: // assert the browser support html5 3: ... ... 4:  5: // start to upload each files in chunks 6: var files = $("#upload_files")[0].files; 7: for (var i = 0; i < files.length; i++) { 8: var file = files[i]; 9: var fileSize = file.size; 10: var fileName = file.name; 11: // calculate the start and end byte index for each blocks(chunks) 12: // with the index, file name and index list for future using 13: ... ... 14:  15: // define the function array and push all chunk upload operation into this array 16: blocks.forEach(function (block) { 17: putBlocks.push(function (callback) { 18: }); 19: }); 20: } 21: }); 22: }); As you can see, I used File.slice method to read each chunks based on the start and end byte index we calculated previously, and constructed a temporary HTML form with the file name, chunk index and chunk data through another new feature in HTML5 named FormData. Then post this form to the backend server through jQuery.ajax. This is the key part of our solution. 1: $("#upload_button_blob").click(function () { 2: // assert the browser support html5 3: ... ... 4: // start to upload each files in chunks 5: var files = $("#upload_files")[0].files; 6: for (var i = 0; i < files.length; i++) { 7: var file = files[i]; 8: var fileSize = file.size; 9: var fileName = file.name; 10: // calculate the start and end byte index for each blocks(chunks) 11: // with the index, file name and index list for future using 12: ... ... 13: // define the function array and push all chunk upload operation into this array 14: blocks.forEach(function (block) { 15: putBlocks.push(function (callback) { 16: // load blob based on the start and end index for each chunks 17: var blob = file.slice(block.start, block.end); 18: // put the file name, index and blob into a temporary from 19: var fd = new FormData(); 20: fd.append("name", block.name); 21: fd.append("index", block.index); 22: fd.append("file", blob); 23: // post the form to backend service (asp.net mvc controller action) 24: $.ajax({ 25: url: "/Home/UploadInFormData", 26: data: fd, 27: processData: false, 28: contentType: "multipart/form-data", 29: type: "POST", 30: success: function (result) { 31: if (!result.success) { 32: alert(result.error); 33: } 34: callback(null, block.index); 35: } 36: }); 37: }); 38: }); 39: } 40: }); Then we will invoke these functions one by one by using the async.js. And once all functions had been executed successfully I invoked another ajax call to the backend service to commit all these chunks (blocks) as the blob in Windows Azure Storage. 1: $("#upload_button_blob").click(function () { 2: // assert the browser support html5 3: ... ... 4: // start to upload each files in chunks 5: var files = $("#upload_files")[0].files; 6: for (var i = 0; i < files.length; i++) { 7: var file = files[i]; 8: var fileSize = file.size; 9: var fileName = file.name; 10: // calculate the start and end byte index for each blocks(chunks) 11: // with the index, file name and index list for future using 12: ... ... 13: // define the function array and push all chunk upload operation into this array 14: ... ... 15: // invoke the functions one by one 16: // then invoke the commit ajax call to put blocks into blob in azure storage 17: async.series(putBlocks, function (error, result) { 18: var data = { 19: name: fileName, 20: list: list 21: }; 22: $.post("/Home/Commit", data, function (result) { 23: if (!result.success) { 24: alert(result.error); 25: } 26: else { 27: alert("done!"); 28: } 29: }); 30: }); 31: } 32: }); That’s all in the client side. The outline of our logic would be - Calculate the start and end byte index for each chunks based on the block size. - Defined the functions of reading the chunk form file and upload the content to the backend service through ajax. - Execute the functions defined in previous step with “async.js”. - Commit the chunks by invoking the backend service in Windows Azure Storage finally.   Save Chunks as Blocks into Blob Storage In above we finished the client size JavaScript code. It uploaded the file in chunks to the backend service which we are going to implement in this step. We will use ASP.NET MVC as our backend service, and it will receive the chunks, upload into Windows Azure Bob Storage in blocks, then finally commit as one blob. As in the client side we uploaded chunks by invoking the ajax call to the URL "/Home/UploadInFormData", I created a new action under the Index controller and it only accepts HTTP POST request. 1: [HttpPost] 2: public JsonResult UploadInFormData() 3: { 4: var error = string.Empty; 5: try 6: { 7: } 8: catch (Exception e) 9: { 10: error = e.ToString(); 11: } 12:  13: return new JsonResult() 14: { 15: Data = new 16: { 17: success = string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(error), 18: error = error 19: } 20: }; 21: } Then I retrieved the file name, index and the chunk content from the Request.Form object, which was passed from our client side. And then, used the Windows Azure SDK to create a blob container (in this case we will use the container named “test”.) and create a blob reference with the blob name (same as the file name). Then uploaded the chunk as a block of this blob with the index, since in Blob Storage each block must have an index (ID) associated with so that finally we can put all blocks as one blob by specifying their block ID list. 1: [HttpPost] 2: public JsonResult UploadInFormData() 3: { 4: var error = string.Empty; 5: try 6: { 7: var name = Request.Form["name"]; 8: var index = int.Parse(Request.Form["index"]); 9: var file = Request.Files[0]; 10: var id = Convert.ToBase64String(BitConverter.GetBytes(index)); 11:  12: var container = _client.GetContainerReference("test"); 13: container.CreateIfNotExists(); 14: var blob = container.GetBlockBlobReference(name); 15: blob.PutBlock(id, file.InputStream, null); 16: } 17: catch (Exception e) 18: { 19: error = e.ToString(); 20: } 21:  22: return new JsonResult() 23: { 24: Data = new 25: { 26: success = string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(error), 27: error = error 28: } 29: }; 30: } Next, I created another action to commit the blocks into blob once all chunks had been uploaded. Similarly, I retrieved the blob name from the Request.Form. I also retrieved the chunks ID list, which is the block ID list from the Request.Form in a string format, split them as a list, then invoked the BlockBlob.PutBlockList method. After that our blob will be shown in the container and ready to be download. 1: [HttpPost] 2: public JsonResult Commit() 3: { 4: var error = string.Empty; 5: try 6: { 7: var name = Request.Form["name"]; 8: var list = Request.Form["list"]; 9: var ids = list 10: .Split(',') 11: .Where(id => !string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(id)) 12: .Select(id => Convert.ToBase64String(BitConverter.GetBytes(int.Parse(id)))) 13: .ToArray(); 14:  15: var container = _client.GetContainerReference("test"); 16: container.CreateIfNotExists(); 17: var blob = container.GetBlockBlobReference(name); 18: blob.PutBlockList(ids); 19: } 20: catch (Exception e) 21: { 22: error = e.ToString(); 23: } 24:  25: return new JsonResult() 26: { 27: Data = new 28: { 29: success = string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(error), 30: error = error 31: } 32: }; 33: } Now we finished all code we need. The whole process of uploading would be like this below. Below is the full client side JavaScript code. 1: <script type="text/javascript" src="~/Scripts/async.js"></script> 2: <script type="text/javascript"> 3: $(function () { 4: $("#upload_button_blob").click(function () { 5: // assert the browser support html5 6: if (window.File && window.Blob && window.FormData) { 7: alert("Your brwoser is awesome, let's rock!"); 8: } 9: else { 10: alert("Oh man plz update to a modern browser before try is cool stuff out."); 11: return; 12: } 13:  14: // start to upload each files in chunks 15: var files = $("#upload_files")[0].files; 16: for (var i = 0; i < files.length; i++) { 17: var file = files[i]; 18: var fileSize = file.size; 19: var fileName = file.name; 20:  21: // calculate the start and end byte index for each blocks(chunks) 22: // with the index, file name and index list for future using 23: var blockSizeInKB = $("#block_size").val(); 24: var blockSize = blockSizeInKB * 1024; 25: var blocks = []; 26: var offset = 0; 27: var index = 0; 28: var list = ""; 29: while (offset < fileSize) { 30: var start = offset; 31: var end = Math.min(offset + blockSize, fileSize); 32:  33: blocks.push({ 34: name: fileName, 35: index: index, 36: start: start, 37: end: end 38: }); 39: list += index + ","; 40:  41: offset = end; 42: index++; 43: } 44:  45: // define the function array and push all chunk upload operation into this array 46: var putBlocks = []; 47: blocks.forEach(function (block) { 48: putBlocks.push(function (callback) { 49: // load blob based on the start and end index for each chunks 50: var blob = file.slice(block.start, block.end); 51: // put the file name, index and blob into a temporary from 52: var fd = new FormData(); 53: fd.append("name", block.name); 54: fd.append("index", block.index); 55: fd.append("file", blob); 56: // post the form to backend service (asp.net mvc controller action) 57: $.ajax({ 58: url: "/Home/UploadInFormData", 59: data: fd, 60: processData: false, 61: contentType: "multipart/form-data", 62: type: "POST", 63: success: function (result) { 64: if (!result.success) { 65: alert(result.error); 66: } 67: callback(null, block.index); 68: } 69: }); 70: }); 71: }); 72:  73: // invoke the functions one by one 74: // then invoke the commit ajax call to put blocks into blob in azure storage 75: async.series(putBlocks, function (error, result) { 76: var data = { 77: name: fileName, 78: list: list 79: }; 80: $.post("/Home/Commit", data, function (result) { 81: if (!result.success) { 82: alert(result.error); 83: } 84: else { 85: alert("done!"); 86: } 87: }); 88: }); 89: } 90: }); 91: }); 92: </script> And below is the full ASP.NET MVC controller code. 1: public class HomeController : Controller 2: { 3: private CloudStorageAccount _account; 4: private CloudBlobClient _client; 5:  6: public HomeController() 7: : base() 8: { 9: _account = CloudStorageAccount.Parse(CloudConfigurationManager.GetSetting("DataConnectionString")); 10: _client = _account.CreateCloudBlobClient(); 11: } 12:  13: public ActionResult Index() 14: { 15: ViewBag.Message = "Modify this template to jump-start your ASP.NET MVC application."; 16:  17: return View(); 18: } 19:  20: [HttpPost] 21: public JsonResult UploadInFormData() 22: { 23: var error = string.Empty; 24: try 25: { 26: var name = Request.Form["name"]; 27: var index = int.Parse(Request.Form["index"]); 28: var file = Request.Files[0]; 29: var id = Convert.ToBase64String(BitConverter.GetBytes(index)); 30:  31: var container = _client.GetContainerReference("test"); 32: container.CreateIfNotExists(); 33: var blob = container.GetBlockBlobReference(name); 34: blob.PutBlock(id, file.InputStream, null); 35: } 36: catch (Exception e) 37: { 38: error = e.ToString(); 39: } 40:  41: return new JsonResult() 42: { 43: Data = new 44: { 45: success = string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(error), 46: error = error 47: } 48: }; 49: } 50:  51: [HttpPost] 52: public JsonResult Commit() 53: { 54: var error = string.Empty; 55: try 56: { 57: var name = Request.Form["name"]; 58: var list = Request.Form["list"]; 59: var ids = list 60: .Split(',') 61: .Where(id => !string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(id)) 62: .Select(id => Convert.ToBase64String(BitConverter.GetBytes(int.Parse(id)))) 63: .ToArray(); 64:  65: var container = _client.GetContainerReference("test"); 66: container.CreateIfNotExists(); 67: var blob = container.GetBlockBlobReference(name); 68: blob.PutBlockList(ids); 69: } 70: catch (Exception e) 71: { 72: error = e.ToString(); 73: } 74:  75: return new JsonResult() 76: { 77: Data = new 78: { 79: success = string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(error), 80: error = error 81: } 82: }; 83: } 84: } And if we selected a file from the browser we will see our application will upload chunks in the size we specified to the server through ajax call in background, and then commit all chunks in one blob. Then we can find the blob in our Windows Azure Blob Storage.   Optimized by Parallel Upload In previous example we just uploaded our file in chunks. This solved the problem that ASP.NET MVC request content size limitation as well as the Windows Azure load balancer timeout. But it might introduce the performance problem since we uploaded chunks in sequence. In order to improve the upload performance we could modify our client side code a bit to make the upload operation invoked in parallel. The good news is that, “async.js” library provides the parallel execution function. If you remembered the code we invoke the service to upload chunks, it utilized “async.series” which means all functions will be executed in sequence. Now we will change this code to “async.parallel”. This will invoke all functions in parallel. 1: $("#upload_button_blob").click(function () { 2: // assert the browser support html5 3: ... ... 4: // start to upload each files in chunks 5: var files = $("#upload_files")[0].files; 6: for (var i = 0; i < files.length; i++) { 7: var file = files[i]; 8: var fileSize = file.size; 9: var fileName = file.name; 10: // calculate the start and end byte index for each blocks(chunks) 11: // with the index, file name and index list for future using 12: ... ... 13: // define the function array and push all chunk upload operation into this array 14: ... ... 15: // invoke the functions one by one 16: // then invoke the commit ajax call to put blocks into blob in azure storage 17: async.parallel(putBlocks, function (error, result) { 18: var data = { 19: name: fileName, 20: list: list 21: }; 22: $.post("/Home/Commit", data, function (result) { 23: if (!result.success) { 24: alert(result.error); 25: } 26: else { 27: alert("done!"); 28: } 29: }); 30: }); 31: } 32: }); In this way all chunks will be uploaded to the server side at the same time to maximize the bandwidth usage. This should work if the file was not very large and the chunk size was not very small. But for large file this might introduce another problem that too many ajax calls are sent to the server at the same time. So the best solution should be, upload the chunks in parallel with maximum concurrency limitation. The code below specified the concurrency limitation to 4, which means at the most only 4 ajax calls could be invoked at the same time. 1: $("#upload_button_blob").click(function () { 2: // assert the browser support html5 3: ... ... 4: // start to upload each files in chunks 5: var files = $("#upload_files")[0].files; 6: for (var i = 0; i < files.length; i++) { 7: var file = files[i]; 8: var fileSize = file.size; 9: var fileName = file.name; 10: // calculate the start and end byte index for each blocks(chunks) 11: // with the index, file name and index list for future using 12: ... ... 13: // define the function array and push all chunk upload operation into this array 14: ... ... 15: // invoke the functions one by one 16: // then invoke the commit ajax call to put blocks into blob in azure storage 17: async.parallelLimit(putBlocks, 4, function (error, result) { 18: var data = { 19: name: fileName, 20: list: list 21: }; 22: $.post("/Home/Commit", data, function (result) { 23: if (!result.success) { 24: alert(result.error); 25: } 26: else { 27: alert("done!"); 28: } 29: }); 30: }); 31: } 32: });   Summary In this post we discussed how to upload files in chunks to the backend service and then upload them into Windows Azure Blob Storage in blocks. We focused on the frontend side and leverage three new feature introduced in HTML 5 which are - File.slice: Read part of the file by specifying the start and end byte index. - Blob: File-like interface which contains the part of the file content. - FormData: Temporary form element that we can pass the chunk alone with some metadata to the backend service. Then we discussed the performance consideration of chunk uploading. Sequence upload cannot provide maximized upload speed, but the unlimited parallel upload might crash the browser and server if too many chunks. So we finally came up with the solution to upload chunks in parallel with the concurrency limitation. We also demonstrated how to utilize “async.js” JavaScript library to help us control the asynchronize call and the parallel limitation.   Regarding the chunk size and the parallel limitation value there is no “best” value. You need to test vary composition and find out the best one for your particular scenario. It depends on the local bandwidth, client machine cores and the server side (Windows Azure Cloud Service Virtual Machine) cores, memory and bandwidth. Below is one of my performance test result. The client machine was Windows 8 IE 10 with 4 cores. I was using Microsoft Cooperation Network. The web site was hosted on Windows Azure China North data center (in Beijing) with one small web role (1.7GB 1 core CPU, 1.75GB memory with 100Mbps bandwidth). The test cases were - Chunk size: 512KB, 1MB, 2MB, 4MB. - Upload Mode: Sequence, parallel (unlimited), parallel with limit (4 threads, 8 threads). - Chunk Format: base64 string, binaries. - Target file: 100MB. - Each case was tested 3 times. Below is the test result chart. Some thoughts, but not guidance or best practice: - Parallel gets better performance than series. - No significant performance improvement between parallel 4 threads and 8 threads. - Transform with binaries provides better performance than base64. - In all cases, chunk size in 1MB - 2MB gets better performance.   Hope this helps, Shaun All documents and related graphics, codes are provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind.
