  • Extremely slow network directory subfolder listing from QNAP NAS in OS X

    Having an issue where I have a folder on a QNAP NAS (TS-439P II+) with over 68,000 subfolders within it. I can browse it quickly and almost instantaneously within Windows 7 via samba, however in OSX 10.6.8, it takes nearly 10+ minutes to display the subfolders, using both samba and AFP. Hoping there is an easy solution - we can't break the folders into smaller subfolders due to a requirement of proprietary software that accesses the sub folders.   • Compress a folder of PDF files into separate zip archives

    I wanted to take a folder full of PDF files and create a number of separate zip files, after following the advice on this question everything worked *almost*perfectly. Here's what happened: When I issued this command in Terminal: zip -s 5m -r ~/Desktop/invoices ~/Desktop/Invoices/ Everything worked really well, in that I got 11 ZIP files of approximately 5 MB each; placed in the folder specified. However, the files they outputted were named as follows: invoices.z01 invoices.z02 invoices.z03 invoices.z04 invoices.z05 invoices.z06 invoices.z07 invoices.z08 invoices.z09 invoices.z10 invoices.zip So as you can see only invoices.zip has been named correctly. I could go through and rename them one by one, but seriously, if we start doing that then what in the name of Evolution are computers for?! Now, I am also aware that I'm relatively new to the Terminal; so I could be making a very silly mistake somewhere. If that's the case, please be patient :-) Any help would be greatly appreciated. One last note: I'm quadriplegic so I would like to avoid GUI applications as much as possible, I use voice recognition software you see this working in the Terminal is much much easier.

    Adobe Illustrator CS5 quit unexpectedly. I'm upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8.1. Now I can't open Adobe Illustrator CS5. I've tried by turning off Java 32 and 64 of Java Preferences.app in Utilities.   • Alternative to Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection for Mac?

    When working from Windows, I prefer to use RoyalTS instead of the default Microsoft RDP client, because it allows me to save multiple connections, the credentials of the connection, etc; as well has having more than 1 connection open at a time. Is there a similar (or any) alternative to the Microsoft RDP client for connecting from OSX to Windows? Aside from VNC, that is; at this point I'm hoping to continue using the RDP protocol.

  • Explode all folders

    Ive got a folder with about a hundred sub folders and again each ones of those has between 10 and 20 sub folders, so all in all a pretty large folder tree. Is there a simple way i can explode or export all of the files in the tree to a new folder which will just be one folder contain the files (no folders, no trees). Im running OSX 10.8, although ive also got Parallels so if there is a windows solution i could just run that as its not something i need to do everyday.

  • Cannot load viper-mode in Emacs24

    Every time I try to load viper-mode in Emacs24 using M-x viper-mode, I get error Wrong type argument: symbolp, (quote 3) I have observed it happens when I try to load viper-mode for the after opening Emacs or after I have issued M-x viper-go-away So once I get this error and run the same command again, viper-mode loads successfully. When I use toggle-viper-mode to turn it off, viper-mode goes away successfully. But when I try to turn it back on using toggle-viper-mode again, I get the above stated error. I have to use viper-go-away and then M-x viper-mode twice to get it back working. How can I get rid of this error?

Do not change this entry. ## 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost 127.0.0.1:9999 project.play and use dscacheutil -flushcache. The problem is that I can only access to localhost:57173, when I tried accessing http://project.play:9999, Chrome returns "Oops! Google Chrome could not find project.play:9999". Can somebody show me where I were wrong? Thank you very much P/S: When accessing localhost:9999 it returns The server made a boo boo.

  • iTunes video black screen until select computer output

    I don't remember this happening before, but now whenever I play any video in iTunes (podcast video, movie, TV show, iTunes extras stuff but the menus work) it just shows a black screen with the sound playing. If I stop it, select "Computer" in the little output control on the iTunes video control panel that pops up, then play again, it works fine. What the heck? Tried rebooting, updating, with and without external monitor. OSX 10.6.6

  • Computer name not appearing on network

    I can connect to other computers on my home network (ubuntu + OSX machines) using the IP address, but I can't connect using the netbios name. On the mac the name appears in Finder but if I try to connect (goconnect to server smb://[email protected]) it doesn't work, while smb://[email protected] does. Same with ssh, ping and afp between the macs. This is a intermittent problem. It has worked in the past.

  • Setting charging limit on MBP?

    Is it possible to tweak settings so that the battery will only charge up to 90% -95% and then use power adapter to run ? A friend told me he was able to set such limits on his non-mac PC so I was hoping there would be a way to do it. From reading I have done online it appears this is better than having a 100% battery most of the time. I have an MBP 13" 2012 running latest version of OSX ML(10.8.2).

But none of them seem to work for Leopard. Does anyone have a solution to generate a true middle click without an external mouse, under Leopard?

    I need to use Kerberos authentication when printing from my OSX machine, however, the machine itself does not have a service account in active directory, so the KDC will not issue a delegation ticket for the local CUPS installation. I think printing could work if the printing framework would directly print to the network CUPS server (or even to the Windows print server), bypassing the local CUPS. Is it possible to setup printing so that it directly accesses the remote print server? (asking for a service ticket for that server would succeed)

  • Time Machine is getting stuck at "Preparing to Back Up" and my Trash isn't emptying

    I have encountered two separate problems, but I am putting them in the same question in case they are related. First, my Trash would not empty. It seems to be getting stuck on certain files, because I will reset my Macbook and some of the files will be deleted, and then if I remove a file or two at random, more can be deleted. Some of these files had strange characters in their names. I tried changing the names to single characters, but this did not help. Next, I attempted to backup my Macbook using Time Machine. I plugged in the HDD I've been using for this, but every time I try to start the backup, Time Machine gets stuck at "Preparing to Back Up". I definitely need to know how to fix the Time Machine problem, but I am curious how to solve the trash problem as well, and whether or not these problems are related. EDIT: Console.app logged the following this morning before I left on a trip.     There is one big issue for me with Doc in OSX - it does not shows you if more than one window opened in application For example - I were browsing with firefox and some site opens a background window with some sounds - and I have no idea where it comes from - Dock does not tell you if some application opens more than one window..     This is drying me nuts for last 5 days!!! Out of the blue 5 days ago, SVN access from my MacBook Pro failed: I cannot access any SVN (i.e. not in our University or open source projects etc).
