• Ubuntu hang, and cannot be soft-reset after resuming from stand by mode

  I have downgrade my xorg drivers, so I can hibernate and stand by my ubuntu smoothly. However, in some case, there's a problem. My ubuntu get hang. When I tried to switch to console mode (Ctrl+Alt+F1), then I cannot login. The system always reply with an error whenever I tried to press a key. When I press Ctrl+Alt+Del to perform a softreset, here what's it said: [80141.320122] end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 193687181 init: control-alt-delete main process (5660) terminated with status 2. This error is not even recorded in syslog. I guess this should be a problem with my hard disk since it said something about a bad sector. Exactly, what kind of error is this?

• Equivalent of LogRotate for Windows?

  We have a huge logfile being written by a vendor's application. Let's assume the vendor won't do anything that we ask. Is there any way of rotating that logfile somehow? We're looking at about 300 MB an hour being written - I'd much rather chunk that into 10 MB pieces, and let anything older than a day or over 1000 files fall off a cliff. (I know I know, possible duplicate of How do you rotate apache logs on windows without interrupting service? ) Aha - the Chomp log was dead, but searching for "chomp logrotate brought me to it's new site. I'll give it a try tomorrow and reply if I like it. I'd still like to hear about software anyone else is using that works for this.

• How to make a server check it's own availability on the web?

  Hi all, Just a quick question – my server is running at my house serving www pages at www.javawag.com. The problem is that my home internet connection keeps dropping randomly - for about 10 mins at a time. This is only an intermittent problem and will go away soon I hope. However, my server doesn't recover properly - when the connection comes back, I can still access it at 192.168.0.8 (locally) without any issue, but at www.javawag.com there's no reply! (Just an aside - my home internet connection is dynamic ISP, the domain www.javawag.com points to javawag.dyndns.org which in turn points to my IP, updated every minute by ddclient on the server) Is there some way for the server to check if it's accessible from the outside world periodically, and if not restart Apache/reboot? Oh, and if I reboot the problem fixes itself also! Javawag

• how limit the number of open TCP streams from same IP to a local port?

  Hi, i would like to limit the number of concurrent open TCP streams from the the same IP to the server's (local) port. Let's say 4 concurrent conncetions. How can this be done with ip tables? the closest thing, that i've found was: In Apache, is there a way to limit the number of new connections per second/hour/day? iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m recent --set iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m recent --update --seconds 86400 --hitcount 100 -j REJECT But this limitation just messures the number of new connections over the time. This might be good for controlling HTTP traffic. But this is not a good solution for me, since my TCP streams usually have a lifetime between 5 minutes and 2 hours. thanks a lot in advance for any reply :)

• What to do if you were scammed by a web hosting company? [on hold]

  I was recently scammed by a web hosting company. Is there anything i can do about it? I would like to sue them but that doesn't sound realistic to me since they are not based on the same country as me. I would like to at least be able to have them blacklisted or something so other people don't get scammed too. I would appreciate if you can tell me how to proceed in these cases. They promise 24/7 support which is not true because its only one guy managing the whole thing and your server can go down for days and he doesn't do anything, he wont even reply your tickets. My server is been offline for over a week now and he only ignores me. I paid for this month and shortly after that my server went offline. I used Paypal to pay. He is in Bulgaria (that's what he says) i'm in Japan. I paid $55 USD.

Most resolvers employ various techniques to provide fast lookups, such as preferring name servers that were previously seen to be faster, sending simultaneous queries to multiple name servers, or pre-fetching queries before the TTL has expired. I was not aware that resolvers used these techniques and I was unsuccessful at searching for more info about this. Are there any names for these techniques? Which resolvers employ which of these techniques?

  I have a web app "myapp.com" that users can use to set up their own websites. Our application is written in php and should be able to do the following: send mails to our own users "from: [email protected]" send mails from our clients to their clients "from: [email protected]" We don't need to take care of incoming mails, just send out mails with the correct from and reply-to addresses. We cannot make this work using Google Apps (limited to our own domain in the from-field) and we cannot make google apps or google apps domains for all our clients, so we are looking for another simple to manage and set up solution. • Recover files after unsuccessful partitioning

  I wanted to install another Linux on my computer, so I tried to resize one of my NTFS partitions with Norton Partition Magic. It didn't complete successfully, showed some errors, said that the partition is not resized and that it's the same size like before. But when I rebooted my computer I couldn't open that partition anymore and I am also not able to mount it from Linux. So this is my question: I had very important data on that partition - can I recover it? I guess nothing's deleted; it's just something messed up so it's not usable, but can I get it back? Please reply if there's any possible way of doing this, thank you.

• Why is my email server in AT&T's blacklist?

  I just got this bounce message: <¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦@att.net>: host scc-mailrelay.att.net[204.127.208.75] said: 521-88.208.246.34 blocked by sbc:blacklist.mailrelay.att.net. 521 DNSRBL: Blocked for abuse. See http://att.net/blocks (in reply to MAIL FROM command) So I'm trying to figure out why our server ended up on their blacklist. The web page link doesn't tell me why, as far as I can see. From a few multi-RBL tools I conclude that our IP is only on the collateral damage lists of uceprotect.net (you can be exempt from that with a paid subscription), and I dearly hope that AT&T doesn't use that. From the mail server logs I see that an email to another @att.net address went through two days ago without being blocked. Does anyone have any ideas how I can find out what went wrong?

• Interested in scp recipe for sftp [closed]

  You wrote in a reply this Blockquote The problem is that sftp runs as the user's id -- first, the sftp client ssh's into the target host as the given user, then runs sftp-server. Since sftp-server is running as a regular user, it has no way to "give away" a file (change owner of a file). However, if you are able to use scp, and assign a key pair to each user, you can get around this. This involves adding a user's key to root's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file, with a "command=" parameter to force it to run a script that sanitizes and alters the arguments of the server-side scp program. I've used this technique before to set up an anonymous scp dropbox that allowed anyone to submit a file, and ensure that no one could retrieve submitted files and also prevent overwrites. • Excel table column validation next row

  I made a table with first column formatted to DATE. In the first row I entered the date manually. In SECOND column I entered validation of date = previous date. I copied this table 8 times. In 5 tables when row is added the validation also appears in the next cell, but in 3 tables it does not. How can I correct this? I tried making a similar new table but the validation condition does not appear in the new row. Please reply.

  I have configured my email server to cache all email to my mailbox. So [email protected] and [email protected] go to one mailbox. Every forum, registration, and guy get their own address for sending me emails so I can deliver it to /dev/null if anyone start spamming. That's the working setup. Now the problem: If I reply to a message, then Thunderbird always sets my default Identity as sender. I know I can add additional identities, but I don't want to add every address. How can I configure when a email is sent to [email protected], I answer with [email protected].

• Is it possible to spoof the From: field in Outlook?

  I am wondering if it is possible to change the From: field (not just the reply-to) in Outlook (specifically in the 2010 beta, but also interested in other versions). I am just moving over from Linux and am used to being able to do this quite simply in some clients. At first I thought it was the option of "Other E-Mail address" on the From drop down menu in a compose window, but that seems to do... nothing! I want to be able to do this so I can have email look like it comes from a domain I own but do not wish to run an SMTP server on.

• What happens if a server never receives the RST packet?

  Someone recently decided to show me a POC of a new Denial of Service method using SYN/TCP he's figured out. I thought it was complete nonsense, but after explaining to him about SYN-SYN/ACK-RST, he left me speechless. He told me "what if the server you're using to trick into sending the SYN/ACK packets can't receive the RST packet?" I have no idea. He claims that the server will continue trying to send SYN/ACK packets, and that the packetrate will continue to build up. Is there any truth to this? Can anyone elaborate? Apparently, the way it works is this: He spoofs the IP of the SYN packet to the target's IP. He then sends the SYN packet to a handful of random servers They all reply with their SYN/ACK packet to the target IP, of course The target responds with RST, as we know BUT somehow he keeps the target from sending the RST or keeps the random servers from processing it With this, apparently the servers will continue trying to send the SYN/ACK packets, thus producing a somewhat of a "snowball" effect.

  Hi serverfault, I have a server in a clients network, seperated from theirs with a router/firewall, the intention is to have this server available through one hostname (example.com) My idea is to have (at least) a DNS server in the outside, to have outside (out of the clients' network) access the internal server. The problem would at that point be the internal client (PC A) My question: What would I have to do to make something like this work? Is it even possible or already done? The goal is to not have to change anything on either PC A or PC B, while both should access the same "internal server" while surfing to "example.com" Perhaps adding logic to the DNS server would work (Detect the external IP of internal client [PC A] is the same as the IP for example.com - Give the local IP as reply?) • OOF (Out of Office) is not working for remote users (Outlook Anywhere)

  I'm not sure how long this issue has been happening, but recently a few of the remote sales users were going to a sales meeting and wanted to set their Out of Office... however in Outlook 2010, they get this error message: "Your automatic reply settings cannot be displayed because the server is currently unavailable" When I run the Exchange Remote Connectivity Analyzer, Autodiscover completes fine, but the next step fails: Exception details: Message: The request failed. The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden.   I installed centos and configured email server and if I send email goes perfectly but if i reply from email that email i am getting this kind of error. Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain example.com by mx00.1and1.com. [74.208.5.3]. I have bought domain in 1and1.com and i successful parked the domain. But i have doubt shall i need to add anything in MX record for other mail server. Please anyone help.

  My client is RDP 6.1 (On Windows XP SP3) and Server is Windows Server 2003. I have installed an SSL certificate on server for RDP. In the RDP settings (General tab), the Encryption method is set to SSL/TLS 1.0 and Encryption level is set to "Client Compatible". I have following questions In this case is it guaranteed that all communication is encrypted even when I remote login to the server? I mean pwd is encrypted Does RDP always use some kind of encryption even if there is no SSL certificate installed on the server? In this case I do not see security lock in the connection bar. When I set encryption level to "High" then I see security lock. I do believe that communication is both cases will be encrypted. Is it true? Please reply to my questions Thanks in advance Kumar

• Outlook mail/calendar items give errors after server migration

  Last Friday our Exchange server was migrated, by our external system administrator, to a new server, with a new server name. Since then we have problems with the calendar/mail items that were created/sent/received on the old server: Reply to mails get bounced if we use auto complete in the To field. If we cancel auto complete and manually enter the (same) e-mail address then there's no problem. Our system administrator says this is because auto complete fills in the old server name (???). Calendar items created on the old server cannot be edited (without an error) and must be recreated if we want to change them. Our system administrator says these problems are normal with a server migration. I cannot believe this. There must be a better way. Am I right?

  I'm having a two WD external hard disk with capacity of 1 TB. I'm trying to copy SAP file(capacity - 250 GB ) in the extension of .vmdk from one hard disk to another hard disk. But when ever i'm trying to copy, at down to the line it showing me this error message. By default my both hard disk File System value is NFTS, even though it showing me an this error message. • If I let Google handle my emails for my domain, my Wordpress site won't send out emails anymore

  Since I decided to let Google handle all my emails for my domain, while the domain is hosted on a 3rd party server, emails send out by a Wordpress installation no longer work. My supposition is that since all email is being routed to Google, my specific account on that server for that domain is unable to send out emails. I definitely wish to keep using google services for handling my emails since it comes with all the advantages connected to a Google account. However I need my Wordpress installation to send out administrative emails. I run my server with CPanel. How to configure that specific account and/or Wordpress to keep it able to send out emails? I don't need people to answer these emails sent out from server (eventually I might set a reply-to-address perhaps) thanks

• Outlook stopped working after updating to Windows 8

  I downloaded Windows 8 update from Microsoft's site and installed it. Everything works perfectly except Outlook. Sometimes receiving messages doesn't work for whatever reason. Now the problem is sending and replying. Before these two worked but after receiving messages started to work, these problems have occurred. When I try to press New to create a new email, I get the following error message Cannot create the e-mail message because a data file to send and receive messages cannot be found. To add a data file, such as a personal folder file, double click the Mail icon in Windows Control. When I try to reply a message, I get the following one The operation failed. An object could not be found. After the update Outlook worked ok. I've had other problems with Outlook too.
