• How to setup heartbeat for IP fail over on SSH failure

  I wonder if anyone can help me, I am trying to setup heartbeat on a redhat 5 to failover an IP address when ssh stops responding on a server. So basically you ssh to a VIP and then get put through which ever server has the floating ip. 192.168.0.100 | | /------------------------\ | /------------------------\ | Server 01 | | | Server 02 | | eth0 - 192.168.0.1 |-----/ | eth0 - 192.168.0.2 | | eth0:0 - 192.168.0.100 | | eth0:0 - down | \------------------------/ \------------------------/ if ssh stops responding i want eth0:0 to be brought up on the second machine to allow ssh connections to carry on being served.   I have a server that I have technicians who need to be able to access using shared credentials. However, doing that violates our security policy (!). I need each user to be able to authenticate using their own credentials, but the server in question has to be logged in with a certain login (these two requirements are clearly diametrically opposed). I thought that this would be a great application for a RADIUS server. I know how to setup RADIUS to go from Windows -- Cisco, but I have no idea how to use RADIUS to authenticate Windows -- Windows. Can this be done? If so, how?

• Supermicro SmartOS setup issue with HDDs

  I'm trying to setup SmartOS on my new Supermicro server (SYS-6027R-N3RF4+). I have 8 HDDs + 2 SSDs installed in the hot-swappable drive bays. I have not configured the Intel RAID controller on the machine (it shows no RAID configured, and lists all 8 HDDs). When I boot SmartOS from my USB key for the first time and get to the initial zpool creation I only see 2 disks listed. How can I tell which two drives are being referenced? How can I get SmartOS to recognize all 8+2 drives? Is there a BIOS setting I need to adjust?

• Setup symbolic link where users can access it with FTP

  I have a folder on a server where a client of mine has a bunch of folders that they upload images and what not for a site, I do a symbolic link to those folders to the root of the website. This way I can give them ftp access to upload whatever they need without having access to the root level of the website. I have another folder that I can't setup as a symbolic link to their folder, which has images they need to upload to. I know that if I create a symbolic link the other way around where the sym link is in their folder, they can't access it through FTP. There has to be a way without creating two separate FTP accounts and give a user the ability to upload to a different directory that is outside of their home directory. I see that it is ftp specific and that there are some settings that can be changed but I haven't seen any clear cut answers for the best way to handle this.

  I have an RT tablet and updated it to Windows 8.1. The update basically performs the new PC setup. I can't get past the "Sign into your Microsoft Account". Clicking "Next" does not allow me to proceed (and prompts me for an email address). Clicking "Don't have an account" does nothing because its not linked. The other two options are "Create an account" a "Privacy statement". I don't want to create an account, and I'm not interested in their perverted terms of service for an account. In Windows 8.0, we were given the option to use local authentication. How do I bypass this feature?

  I have been running into issue with my MSSQL Database setup with speed. Here is my scenario. About 100M Rows Average: 1k Updates Per Second Hard Drives: RAID 10 SSD MDF --Active Time: 0 Log Drives: 1 SSD LDF - Simple Recovery --Active Time 99.9 --Queue: 8 I do not need a back up of the log so it is set to simple recovery but my bottleneck is still at my log. I get high WAITLOG times and thus it can not update any faster. I can't do bulk updates/transactions and each update needs to be one at a time. Is my only option to increase write performance of the log drives, add a RAID drives? Any suggestions on increasing the performance?

  We have a number of MS SQL servers in our environment running either SQL Server 2005 standard/enterprise or SQL server 2008 enterprise. Currently the SQL services are running as local service or network service and the MS recommended best practice is to run as a domain account which is what we are trying to move towards. Is the best practice with regards to domain accounts to have a separate domain account per service per server? So if we have 4 SQL services we want to run per server and we have 50 servers, we would create 50 * 4 = 200 accounts in AD? This seems excessive to me and I was wondering if anyone has any real experience with this type of setup and it's management.

Is there a way that VMHost can be told to trust ADServer and then be able to use users accounts from there?   I've got an ESXi server that I'm trying to assign a static IP to. I'm having trouble setting the gateway because (I presume) the gateway is on a different subnet. I've been able to accomplish this task on normal Linux servers by doing the following: route add 172.50.99.254 eth0 route add -net default gw 172.50.99.254 eth0 Now using the GUI config tools for ESXi I've tried setting the following IP: 172.50.5.151 Netmask: 255.255.252.0 Gateway: 172.50.99.254 The gateway does not stick, and when I try to add the gateway manually using esxcfg-route it says it has no route to the gateway IP. How can I get this static IP set correctly? (I don't have any control over the network setup).

One solution for that could be to use php-fpm's chroot option, but that causes a lot of other issues like domain name resolver does not work sending mail does not work Tips?

  We have a high transaction (lots of reads and writes) database server (running SQL 2005) that is currently set up with a RAID 1 OS partition (C:) and a RAID 5 data/log/tempdb partition (D:). The C: has 2 drives and the D: has 4 drives. The server has around 300 databases ranging from 10MB to 2GB in size. I have been reading up on best practices for partioning the disks, but would like some opinions on our setup since we are so limited in the number of disks. It seems like RAID 10 is popular, but I dont think we could use it with only 6 total disks to work with. Thanks. • Storage setup for large files

  I need to store over 200TB of data (all types, biggest being video files) and be able to access it over a local network. The files will be accessed for editing or searches. I don't need versioning, but a setup that would keep me safe from harddrive failures would be nice. Right now the content is on different harddrives, some external drives, some regular. I don't exclude the possibility of buying new/extra drives if necessary. If they will ever be exposed to the web, it wont be to the public, but just a couple of people. I have no idea what to buy to make this happen.
