  • VM using a secondary graphic card

    Hi everyone, at the moment i have a dual monitor setup on my main PCIe gfx card. I know that on windows it is almost impossible to have a second card (eg no thrills PCI card) running without having an SLI motherboard because of a driver issue. Well this was my conclusion after many weeks of research. I was thinking...is it possible to use a VM in order to utilize the secondary card as the default video output to feed another monitor? let me know if you want me to clarify Thanks :)

    i'm thinking about converting my OS (ubuntu) to the 64 bit version to use the last bit of memory (4 gb)—ok, it's rather reinstalling … will this work as expected or are there possible limits given by the mainboard/memory controller/some other component, so i cannot fully utilize my full ram? if so, are there benefits from upgrading anyway?

  • How to boot more than 1 linux distro along with windows?

    I have a machine that currently has Windows Vista living peacefully with Ubuntu 10.04 but I would like to test out another distro outside of a virtual machine without destroying my current Ubuntu or Windows installs. Is this possible? If so, any recommendations on how to arrange the partitions? I was thinking of moving user home areas to a separate partition and having 1 partition for all Ubuntu files and 1 for all files associated with the other distro.

More technically oriented, something I can see and hand over to the script designers or Mozilla and say "see what this doing to my browsing experience!!"

    I'm thinking of buying the HP ProLiant MicroServer*. My question is if I just put a single 2TB drive, how easy would it be in the future to upgrade to a second 2TB drive in a RAID-1 setup? Can this be done without formatting the original 2TB drive? *It looks like the £100 cashback offer is stopping end of Aug, making this system cost around £260 without HDDs. Are there any other brands that anyone would recommend for all-in-one hardware solutions.

    Has anybody ever seen any (no-installs-necessary) solutions to listing any RSS feed on any page of a website? Ideally it would consist of HTML (javascript if necessary) and require no downloads or installs. I am thinking of twitter-style apps that you load up in an iframe or via Javascript and in turn they show your latest tweets on the page - same concept, different content. Just looking for a shiny gadget, not able to write my own solution for this particular project.

    I have recently bought myself a new monitor, now I'd had my previous screen well over 5 years now so I'm looking at this one thinking the picture doesn't quite look right (not bad, just different). Rather than just wait until I'm used to the new picture I'd rather get it fine tuned, then get used to it - so I can reap the maximum benefit.     For my personal experience, mysql replication is fragile. I know that there area many things not to do beacuse they could break replication, but we are humans and the error could always occur. So I was thinking... is there a way to enforce mysql replication? Something that prevents queries that are dangerous for the replication to be runt? In other words I'm searching for something that saves replication even if I accidentally run evil queries.

    Hi so i was doing some research in the library so i could use some pictures later on my Desktop computer in my room. I have space on my Lab account which i usually SSH into, and i was wondering if URL's can be directly transferred over to a remote machine and saved on the hard disk.     thinking about blocking all '.info' domains on a server running netqmail-1.06 I saw the instructions for the badmailfrom-wildcard patch http://tomclegg.net/qmail-bmf-wildcard specifically mention qmail-1.03 and make no mention of netqmail-1.06. I searched around to see if this patch is already included but didn't find any information in the netqmail changelog http://www.qmail.org/netqmail/CHANGES or anywhere Tried using it by putting '.info' into the badmailfrom file and restarted qmail without error, it seems to be working. Can anyone confirm that this functionality is included in netqmail-1.06?

  • Server Hardware on the Desktop

    When I rebuild my desktop, I'm thinking of using server hardware instead of desktop hardware. I want to do this so I can easily add a lot of ECC memory (~20GB), and possibly more than one processor. I know that video hardware could be a problem, especially because I use 4 monitors. I should be fine with this, as long as I have two pci-e channels. Are there any downsides to doing this? Anything I'm not seeing?

    I was just thinking about how nice virtual machines are...and how even "rebooting" is less painful, because at the very least, you don't have to wait for your physical computer to turn off and on with all the mobo shannanigans at the start... so, what if I ran everything in a virtual machine? Then I wouldn't really need a primary OS, I just need something than can run VirtualBox or what have you. So what's the lightest weight OS I could install, that supports a good virtual machine?

  • Why is my computer using so much ram?

    I have 16gb of ram installed in my computer, and nearly 70% of it is used at all times. Looking at the processes in task manager the memory being used with everything in there doesn't even add up to 2gb. I have RAPID mode enabled on my ssd which may be using 2gb at most so I would understand that.   • Is auto-logon on laptop with encrypted hard drive secure?

    I have the complete hdd of my laptop encrypted (with the Windows built-in Bitlocker) and thus have to login two times upon booting (Bitlocker and user account). Since I'm the only person using the computer (and knowing the Bitlocker password), I was thinking about automatically login into the user account to make the boot process smoother and quicker. In which cases/scenarios is this a bad idea and the additional login gives a true additionally layer of security?

    In this recent post about criticism regarding built-in DRM in Intels SandyBridge processors, Intel denies that there's any DRM in Sandybridge processors but goes on to say that Intel created Intel insider, an extra layer of content protection. Think of it as an armoured truck carrying the movie from the Internet to your display, it keeps the data safe from pirates, but still lets you enjoy your legally acquired movie in the best possible quality I'm confused now. So far I was thinking DRM is content protection. Can someone shed light on this?

  • Some Windows XP users can't open any programs

    On my Windows XP PC several user accounts have been created (five to be exact), of these one has all the built-in programs disabled. When I click to open any of these programs it searches to find the program. This is bizarre because all the other users can open these programs just fine. Thinking that the user account is corrupted I created a new user and this new account has the same problem. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

    Can I access my iMac based iTunes library from my iPad over my home wifi? I know I can sync them up but the library is too big. Edit; just to clear(er), the movies, podcasts etc which are stored on the iMac, I want to watch them on my iPad without syncing. I know I can create playlist to sync a subset of my library, but that is not what I want. What I'm thinking about is using my iPad as a kind of portable apple TV.

  • What would cause my SendMail server not to acknowledge receiving a TCP Sequence?

    My TCP/IP Stack knowledge is a little rusty so please bear with me.... I have a CentOS 5.7 server with SendMail and am having seeing intermittent timeout issues sending email (particularly larger email) to other remote domains. It doesn't happen with all attachments or recipient domains. Just some. After some extended troubleshooting, I think I've narrowed it down to TCP Sequences not being acknowledged. Here's a breakdown of the TCP session from a packet capture I collected directly on my MTA (fooMTA): Packet 1 - 11: Standard TCP handshake followed by initial SMTP conversation. No errors. Packet #12 Recipient MTA: TCP sequence 231. Ack 91. Packet #13 FooMTA: TCP sequence 91. Ack 305. Packet #14 FooMTA: TCP sequence 1115. Ack 305. Packet #15 Recipient MTA: TCP sequence 305. Ack 2495. Packet #16 FooMTA: TCP sequence 2495. Ack 305. Packet #17 FooMTA: TCP sequence 5255. Ack 305. Packet #18: Recipient MTA: TCP sequence 305. Ack 5255. Packet #19: FooMTA: TCP sequence 6635. Ack 305. Packet #20: FooMTA: TCP sequence 8015. Ack 305. Packet #21: Recipient MTA: TCP Sequence 305. Ack 8015. Packet #22: FooMTA: TCP Sequence 10775. Ack 305. Packet #23: FooMTA: TCP Sequence 13535. Ack 305. Packet #24: Recipient MTA: TCP sequence 305. Ack 10775 Packet #25: FooMTA: TCP Sequence 14915. Ack 305 It keeps going like this with my server still thinking it hasn’t received sequence 305… in response the remote side eventually retransmits its prior data thinking that it never arrived. Eventually the gap gets so large that no new data is sent and the remote MTA keeps retransmitting old stuff. This contributes to an exponential backoff and eventually the remote side gives up. What’s strange to me is that I see the “missing” TCP sequence (305 in this case) arriving back to my server (via a packet capture collected directly from fooMTA) So I don’t get why my server keeps asking for it. Could this be firewall related? What would be the next step in troubleshooting?
