  • How do I start Chrome using a specified "user profile"?

    I use the new built-in "Users" feature of Chrome to switch between Home/Work accounts easily. However, Chrome remembers the "last" user profile you had selected when launching new windows. This is a problem if I close down my "Home" profile last, because when I then click the Email shortcut on my taskbar, because it goes to mail.mycompany.com using my Home profile, and I'm not logged in. I'd like to change the shortcut to the company webmail to pass a switch that tells Chrome to always start as the "Default" user, regardless of the last one used. Note: I have tried user-data-dir, and this seems to do something very different, completely isolated from the Users functionality built in to Chrome. It's possible I'm using it wrong, but please test this before assuming it does the same thing and posting an answer ;-)

  • How to solve the problem that Chrome doesn't obey "Show Window side by side" on Win7?

    If I bring out Firefox and Chrome, and right click on the task bar and choose "Show Windows side by side", Chrome will not be arranged side by side. But if it is Firefox and IE, then the 2 windows will in fact be arranged side by side. If it is Chrome showing and we press and hold "Window key" and LEFT ARROW, then in fact it does move to the left as a half size window. So Chrome partially work on Win7 for the expected behavior. Any method to make it work for the first case? thanks.

    As soon as I jumped onto one of the beta releases for Windows 7, I tried to install Google Chrome. Being on a 64-bit installation it came up with a 'non-supported OS' or some error (can't remember). Having a look around at the time I saw lots of posts/tips about just appending --in-process-plugins to the shortcut for chrome, after trying this and still not having luck, I found more posts including what seemed ones from the Chrome developers saying this was not wise and exposed a security risk. So does anyone have a well sourced answer, as to what's holding up Win 7 64-bit support in Chrome, or better yet an "official" answer to say that it is supported in Win7 x64 RTM and works well now...

  • Why am I having trouble viewing HTTPS websites only using Chrome only on my employer's network?

    I'm using Google Chrome on my new MacBook Pro that has been provided to me by my employer. Many of the HTTPS sites I visit do not work when I visit them using Google Crome while I am connected to my employer's network. Example: www.facebook.com These same sites work perfectly fine if I use a different browser (like Safari) or even with Chrome when my Macbook is connected to my home WiFi network. Chrome reports the error: "The certificate was signed by an unknown authority". See attached screenshots. How can I resolve this problem? I really want to use Chrome. But not having access to numerous important work and outside websites is unacceptable.

  • Does Chrome have a quick find shortcut similar to ' in Firefox?

    I absolutely lived on the ' shortcut in Firefox, which allows you to do a find that applies to text links, and it focuses on them so you can hit Enter and proceed to that link. Chrome only has ctrl-f which focuses on links as well, but you have to ESC out and then hit Enter, which is not as immediate as the Firefox shortcut. Is anyone aware of a Chrome shortcut that replicates this functionality? Or is there some hidden shortcut/key that does this in Chrome which I'm simply unaware of?

    I have Firefox and Google Chrome installed in the same machine (Linux). It happens when I type something in Chrome Omnibox it suggests pages I have already visited in Firefox. I have never connected the accounts of both browsers I have never imported information from one browser to other I have never visited the suggested pages in Chrome The keyword I type in the omnibox is vague and there is no way it could guess the suggestion without having access to the Firefox history. i.e.: i type "ir" in Chrome and it suggests me the same Iron Maiden lyrics page I have browse before in Firefox.   • How to call a JavaScript function from one frame to another in Chrome/Webkit with file protocol

    I have developed an application that has a list of items in one frame; when one clicks on an item it does something in another frame (loads an image). This used to work fine in all browsers, including Chrome 3; now it still works fine in Firefox but in recent versions of Chrome (I believe since 4) it throws this error: Unsafe JavaScript attempt to access frame with URL (...) from frame with URL (...). Domains, protocols and ports must match. This is obviously a security "feature" but is it possible to get around it? Here is a simple test: index.html: <html> <frameset cols="50%,50%"> <frame src="left.html" name="left"/> <frame src="right.html" name="right"/> </frameset> </html> left.html: <html> <body> <a href="javascript:parent.right.test('hello');">click me</a> </body> </html> right.html: <html> <body> <script> function test(msg) { alert(msg); } </script> </body> </html> The above works in Firefox 3.6 and Chrome 3 but in Chrome 5 it throws the above error... Edit: added the @cols attribute to the frameset element in fact it works in Chrome if and only if the pages are served with the http protocol (and from the same domain) but my problem is when pages are local and served from a file:// protocol. Then it works in Firefox (all versions) and Chrome 3 but not Chrome 5 (I don't have Chrome 4 so I'm not shure about that specific version (and don't know if it's even possible to download a specific Chrome version?) -- but for Chrome 5 I'm very sure it doesn't work).

    From the firefox developer website I know that firefox use objectURL = window.URL.createObjectURL(file); to get url of file type, but in chrome and other webkit browsers we have window.webkitURL.createObjectURL() for detecting url.   • WPF Enable/Disabled controls from a page placed inside main window application

    Hi! I have an WPF application that has a main window. In the left side of this Window there are some buttons into a listbox, it is a kind of menu to access faster to pages. These buttons belongs to pages that they are loaded inside the window when the user selects one. Main window also has another main menu in the top for doing other tasks. When a page is loaded in the main window and the user clicks a button of this currently loaded page, it starts a task that takes a long time. While this long task is executing I want the user can not select (or press) any of the buttons into the listbox because In the loaded page the long task also is updating the UI for this page. I would like to disabled (isEnabled=false) the listbox when long task is executing and not to enabled it until the long task has finished. How can I do this? I mean, from the page is currently loaded I want to disabled the listbox placed in the main window that is the owner. The listbox doesn't belong to the currently loaded page. Thanks!

  • Help with accessing a pre-existing window AFTER opener is refreshed!

    Alright, I'm at my wit's end on this issue. First, backstory. I'm working on a video management system where we're allowing users, when adding new content, to upload and, optionally, transcode a media file. We're using Java applet for the browser-based FTP client. What I want to do is allow a user to initiate an upload and then send the FTP connection instance to a popup window. This window will act as a job queue for the FTP transfer process. This will allow users to move about the main interface without having to stay on the original page until an individual file transfer is complete. For the most part I have all of this working, but here's a problem. If the window is closed, all connections are dropped and the upload process for all queued files will be canceled. So, if Window One opens the Popup Window, adds stuff to the queue, refreshes the screen or moves to a different page, how will I access the Popup Window? The popup window and its contents must remain persistent while the user navigates through the original window. The original window must be able to access the popup to add a new job to the queue. The popup window itself is independent of the opening window, so communication only happens in one direction: Parent - Popup Not Parent <- Popup Window.open(null, 'WINDOW_NAME'); will not work in this case. I need to check if a window exists BEFORE using window.open. Help!?!?

    I have inherited development of a Java/SWT application running on Windows only. One of the feature requests that I need to scope is a Google-chrome-type title bar in place of the SWT windows title bar. The application's tabs appear at the same level as the window control buttons. My understanding is that I will need to: write a Windows widget capable of rendering the custom look and managing tabs as opposed to menus. expose the Windows widget as a dll for use in Java via JNI write a custom SWT widget to wrap it and expose the tab management interface. I have a lot of experience with Java programming, GUI programming with Swing/AWT, and non-GUI C# programming. Windows GUI programming and SWT are new to me so I'm not sure where to start. The best I have found so far is a 2001 article on writing your own SWT widget. My biggest unknown is the best way to implement a custom Windows application-window.

    I have been playing with the Command Window in Visual Studio (View-Other Windows-Command Window). It is great for several mouse-free scenarios. (The autocompleting file "Open" command rocks in a non-trivial solution.) That success got me thinking and experimenting: Possibility 1.1: You can use the Alias commands to create custom commands Possibility 1.2: You can use the Shell command to run arbitrary executables and specify parameters (and pipe the result to the output or command windows) Possibility 2: A previously setup external tool definition (with project-relative path variables) could be run from the command window What I am stuck on is: There doesn't appear to be a way to send parameters to an aliased command (and thus the underlying Shell call) There doesn't appear to be a way to use project/solution relative paths ($SolutionDir/$ProjectDir) on a Shell call Using absolute paths in Shell works, but is fragile and high-maintenance (one alias for each needed use case). Typically you want the command to run against a file relative to your project/solution. It seems you can't run the traditional external tools (Tools-External Tools...) in the command window Ultimately I want the external tool functionality in the command window in some way. Can anyone see a way to do this? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? So my questions: Can an "external tool" of some sort (using relative project/solution path parameters) be used in the Command Window? If yes, How? If no, what might be a suitable alternative?

  • View Docs and PDFs Directly in Google Chrome

    Would you like to view documents, presentations, and PDFs directly in Google Chrome?  Here’s a handy extension that makes Google Docs your default online viewer so don’t have to download the file first. Getting Started By default, when you come across a PDF or other common document file online in Google Chrome, you’ll have to download the file and open it in a separate application. It’d be much easier to simply view online documents directly in Chrome.  To do this, head over to the Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer page on the Chrome Extensions site (link below), and click Install to add it to your browser. Click Install to confirm that you want to install this extension. Extensions don’t run by default in Incognito mode, so if you’d like to always view documents directly in Chrome, open the Extensions page and check Allow this extension to run in incognito. Now, when you click a link for a document online, such as a .docx file from Word, it will open in the Google Docs viewer. These documents usually render in their original full-quality.  You can zoom in and out to see exactly what you want, or search within the document.  Or, if it doesn’t look correct, you can click the Download link in the top left to save the original document to your computer and open it in Office.   Even complex PDF render very nicely.  Do note that Docs will keep downloading the document as you’re reading it, so if you jump to the middle of a document it may look blurry at first but will quickly clear up. You can even view famous presentations online without opening them in PowerPoint.  Note that this will only display the slides themselves, but if you’re looking for information you likely don’t need the slideshow effects anyway.   Adobe Reader Conflicts If you already have Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader installed on your computer, PDF files may open with the Adobe plugin.  If you’d prefer to read your PDFs with the Docs PDF Viewer, then you need to disable the Adobe plugin.  Enter the following in your Address Bar to open your Chrome Plugins page: chrome://plugins/ and then click Disable underneath the Adobe Acrobat plugin. Now your PDFs will always open with the Docs viewer instead. Performance Who hasn’t been frustrated by clicking a link to a PDF file, only to have your browser pause for several minutes while Adobe Reader struggles to download and display the file?  Google Chrome’s default behavior of simply downloading the files and letting you open them is hardly more helpful.  This extension takes away both of these problems, since it renders the documents on Google’s servers.  Most documents opened fairly quickly in our tests, and we were able to read large PDFs only seconds after clicking their link.  Also, the Google Docs viewer rendered the documents much better than the HTML version in Google’s cache. Google Docs did seem to have problem on some files, and we saw error messages on several documents we tried to open.  If you encounter this, click the Download link in the top left corner to download the file and view it from your desktop instead. Conclusion Google Docs has improved over the years, and now it offers fairly good rendering even on more complex documents.  This extension can make your browsing easier, and help documents and PDFs feel more like part of the Internet.  And, since the documents are rendered on Google’s servers, it’s often faster to preview large files than to download them to your computer. Has anyone experienced this and is there some setting that fixes this? I've uninstalled Flash from the system otherwise (Chrome bundles it) so I only use chrome for Flash games, and as a plus the other browsers are quite solid without Flash.

  • Tiling window manager where dual heads share common workspace

    I want to use a tiling window manager with my dual monitor setup, but almost all wms seem to treat each monitor as an independent workspace. This means that I can change the workspace of monitor 0 without affecting the workspace of monitor 1. This is not what I want -- I want a workspace to span both monitors, where each monitor is essentially a separate column for tiling (my monitors are oriented vertically, so they are well-suited as tiling columns). When I switch workspaces, say with Mod-[0-9], I want both monitors to change contents. So far the only wm I have found to support this is wmii, but I'd love to try some other options. Have I missed this capability from other tiling wms?

  • use i3 tiling window manager in RHEL 5

    For some time I have been using the i3 tiling window manager in Ubuntu. However at my new company we use RHEL5. I would dearly love to port over all my configs but Im having some trouble... An initial (naive) approach seems that a simple yum install i3 yields no results for i3. I then used some additional rpm repos by following instructions to add the EPEL RPM Repositories but it seems i3 is only bundled for RHEL = 6. Damn. I'm fairly sure that this must be possible but I'm pretty new to the Redhat scene and am not sure how to approach this problem. Any pointers would be gratefully received!
