• System and Router configuration for setting up a home firewall based on Zentyal

  I am not much of a system administrator, so please be patient if this looks too simple for you. I have a several computers at home, and all of them connect using an ADSL modem/router (and Wireless AP). I have been attacked several times (mainly from Russia and Ukraine), so I thought I should have some kind of firewall, besides the ESET firewall on my Windows 7. So now I have these (new) configuration: I have a small ADSL modem (Zyxel brand) which has only one Ethernet port. This modem is used to connect to internet and is configured in NAT mode. The interface has is configured with IP address 192.168.1.1. I have an old PC and I have installed zentyal on it. It has two Ethernet ports, eth0 and eth1. Eth0 is connected to the Zyxel modem with IP 192.168.1.2 and is checked as the WAN interface (external). I have another ADSL modem which is also a router with 4 Ethernet ports and Wireless AP. One of the Ethernet ports is connected to eth1 on Zentyal box. The Ethernet port's IP is 192.168.2.1 and Zentyal's eth1 is 192.168.2.2. Now, I want to enable other computers to connect to internet through the router both using Wireless and Ethernet. The problem is that I don't know how to configure the router so it routes connections to the Zentyal box. Does anyone have any clue? Again I am sorry if this looks stupid. Thanks.

• How can I install iTunes in such a way that it can't put any "hooks" or helper programs on my computer?

  I'm buying a new iPad, which means I must once again install iTunes. I've not used iTunes in more than 6 months, since I bought a new computer. I don't like iTunes, but I can live with using it to buy/manage media and sync my Apple devices when the program is open. What I would like to do though, is find a way to install iTunes in such a way that it has absolutely no effect on my system when it is closed. iTunes normally installs several helper programs such as iTunesHelper.exe, and the Bonjour service. These programs run in the background when iTunes is closed. You can force-close them, or remove them from your setup files, but iTunes will often put them right back when you run it. I know these programs are mostly harmless, but they have at times caused issues such as iTunes spending system resources trying to catalog media files or drives connected to VPN, or other issues. At best they're just one more small background process eating up a small piece of my CPU time and RAM. How can I run iTunes without letting it get it's "hooks" into my system? One thought I had is that I could create a Windows user account just for iTunes, and deny it admin privileges. Then if I installed iTunes using that account maybe anything it installed wouldn't affect the "main" account on my PC? But I'm not sure if that would work.... Failing that, maybe some kind of virtualization software or sandbox I could install it in? I'm open to any suggestions. My system is an Intel-based PC running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Thanks!

• Photoshop CS5 performance over network drive (cifs)

  Hello Everyone I did install a QNAP NAS TS410 for a customer (professional photographer) with 3 Hitachi Deskstar 7200rpm 2TB disk configured as RAID5. The NAS and the workstations are connected over a Gigabit network. He and his co-worker are accessing the photos (about 1TB of photos) over a mapped network drive from their windows machines (Windows XP - 32bit and Windows 7 Ultimate - 32bit). Both are using Photoshop CS5 to edit the photos. The problem is that to save a edited photo takes a really long time, it takes about 3 times as long to save a photo as to open it. After some tests I can exclude the network, the NAS and the windows machines as source of the issue. I think the problem is the Photoshop software and its handling of the network drives. Officially network drives are not supported by Adobe. I do not have any experience with the Adobe products, especially with Adobe Photoshop CS5. What are your recommendation to solve the performance issue? Should my customer copy the photos to the local drive, edit them and upload them again to the network drive or is Adobe Drive or Adobe Version Cue the answer? One requirement is that the photos need to be accessible / editable from both computers even when one of them is offline. Adobe Version Cue needs a dedicated service running to be usable, so this solution is not possible as far as I understand the Cue software. • VMWare ESXi 5 - Expanded RAID 5 array - cannot access datastore

  I'm using VMWare ESXi 5 and had a 2 TB RAID 5 setup on an HP DL360 with a P400i RAID card. I added two more 1 TB drives and using the SmartStart ACU, added the drives and expanded the logical disk. Now after booting back to ESXi, the server boots, but lists no available persistent storage. I've rescanned multiple times to no avail: the Datastore doesn't show up. I booted to GParted and the 1.8TB partition shows up, but it shows as unknown. Anyone have any good ideas? EDIT: Final Solution So after much gnashing of teeth, it was fairly simple to solve. I purchased an eSata 2 TB external drive and a PCI eSata card for my server. I then used Clonezilla to image the current partitions to my new external drive. You have to check "don't check drive sizes" in advanced mode, otherwise it will yell at you for have a smaller drive. For some reason my PCI card wouldn't boot on my HP server, so I hooked the drive up to another desktop I had, booted to VMWare, and copied the vmdk's to another drive. I'm going to blow out the RAID config and then create 1.5TB logical drives.

• Is there a way to force the monitor to power off in Windows 8?

  I have googled this a bit and looked at powrprof.dll and PsShutdown but I haven't found a way to do exactly what I want to do. You know that power save option that lets Windows turn off your monitor(s) if you haven't touched the system for x amount of time? Well, I have a PC that needs to be on most of the day (and night), and I have to watch it much of the time, so I can't have a short timeout for automatically turning off the monitor. However, once I leave it for a few hours (happens at varying times of the day), I would like to be able to issue a command that puts the computer in this mode. Not sleep mode, not hibernate mode. Monitor off, that is all. I realize of course I could just turn the physical monitor off. That is not what I want. This Dell monitor takes forever to display a picture from a cold state. If it is turned off by the computer not sending a signal - not so bad. Is there any way for me to do this? As mentioned, the OS can do it, so I would find it really useful if I could do it too. :)

• Can I boot up a virtual machine natively?

  My question is: Is is possible to run a virtual machine natively on your hardware if you have installed the proper drivers etc? In other words, can I use a VHD as a regular hard drive to boot from? The reason I want to do this is that I do both graphics-intensive and audio-intensive work, but my computer is not powerful enough to handle both at the same time and many times I install a bunch of audio programs that I don't want affecting the stability of my graphics programs. Basically I wanted to have sandboxing between the two sets of applications. So I tried running the graphics-intensive programs in a VirtualBox VM and the audio-intensive work natively (simply because it's a pain to route ASIO audio devices in/out of VirtualBox). This kind-of works - the graphics-intensive stuff is tolerable, but still relatively slow, because it's running inside a VM. So my next idea was to just dual-boot and install the graphics and audio programs in separate partitions but I frequently use them in tandem, so it wouldn't be practical to reboot my machine every time I need to use the other set of programs. But I could live with this scenario: If I need to do more audio-intensive stuff, I'll just boot up to the audio partition and run the graphics programs in a VM, and then when I'm working heavily on the graphics part, I'll just boot the graphics partition as a regular OS directly on the hardware. Is this possible? For example by booting up a VHD as a regular hard drive? Or by setting up dual-boot, and every time the audio partition is shut down, synchronize the graphics VM VHD with the native graphics partition? Is it practical, given the above scenario? And if it's not possible, barring buying another computer, can anyone suggest a best-of-all-worlds setup (the two worlds being performance, sandboxing, and running in parallel) for the above scenario? • Exchange 2007 with Android activesync

  A few of our users noticed that it will stop working intermittently for them. I didn't believe it at first until I changed my android phone and it started occuring for me. It will just stop syncing completely, it looks like the server is blocking the device completely. This mainly occurs when they are using the wifi. I've done some testing. If I switch off the wifi and use the phone data plan it will work fine. When it's on the wifi network, I try and browse to the webmail/owa page and it says page not found! I did a dns lookup and they resolve correctly. If I use another device on the same wifi network, it can access the exchange servers fine. Sometimes the wifi network will just work without any issues. But when it fails, it looks like the phone constantly checks the server every second to see if it is online even though I've got it on manual sync. I was wondering whether it tries to sync too many times and exchange thinks its a denial service attack. My old android phone that works is Froyo and the new one is Icecream. People who have reported issues seems to be newer phones. They also tested their own wifi network at home and experience the same problem. We haven't patch our exchange recently before seeing this problem. Anyone has seen this issue?

• Limiting bandwith on an Windows 7 machine

  I need to limit the bandwidth on my Windows 7 x64 machine. In the past (on XP) I've been able to use NetLimiter for similar tasks. However for some reason I can't get it to work anymore. For lower limits the bandwidth tests are able to exceed the limit by 10-50%; higher limits seem to be ignored completely and the bandwidth tests report download speeds of over 10 times the speed I set. I'm using speedtest.net and some similar service from my ISP for these tests. Anyway, I don't necessarily need a program as complex as NetLimiter since I only need to throttle my machine's bandwidth, not a specific program's. In case you are wondering why in the world I'd want to cripple my Internet speed, there is a funny story behind this. Long story short, my modem gets random disconnects. Tech support comes in, says my Internet speed is abnormally high and I must be using some tools to somehow make it go faster than it's supposed to and this messes up my modem. I check the connection with another computer and it seems that my PC is the only one in my network that gets abnormal speeds. I reinstall my OS, speed looks normal at first, after I install the batch of 50 or so updates, it goes back to abnormally high speeds and the disconnect problems are not solved. Now I don't have a clue if the explanation the tech team gave me was just a strategy to lay the blame on someone else, but I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and see what happens if I really reduce my speed to their specification. Any help appreciated.

• Windows 7 Startup fails after installation

  I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate a week ago. Yesterday I've noticed that the SP1 update is available. After installation of SP1 the computer failed to startup, and had shown a black screen. I couldn't even go to safe mode and F8 didn't help. After some fixing attempts including system restore, startup repair, bootmgr & BCD rebuilding from CMD, I have decided to reinstall Windows (after all, it's only a week old) After the successful installation, I have decided to first install all available updates before I continue. So after the updates download & installation, the computer rebooted. And now I didn't see the black screen again - but in the "Starting Windows..." screen the logo didn't appear and the system didn't startup. Here I could go to safe mode selection window, but it didn't work either ("Loading Windows Files" but nothing). I've also tried: I thought that the CD was corrupted, so I've used a fresh new disk of Windows, tried x86 & x64 versions, the same symptoms, no change. Resetted the BIOS to default, no change. Memory diagnostic HDD diagnostic Restarted Windows WITHOUT INSTALLING UPDATES, but it had the same symptom, so maybe Windows Update is not the case?! I've tried installing it so many times - that I am simply stuck - I can't "reinstall Windows, because it is corrupted...". Maybe the HDD is corrupted? I've also checked it and didn't find a problem.

• How can I remedy the always-on-top window problem?

  Sorry for the vague title but this one is hard to explain so bear with me please. I'm using Windows Vista at work for web development and sometimes when I Click or Alt-Tab to background window, the window will get focus but it will not be brought to the front. In order to bring the window to the front, I have to click on the applications border (when the resize cursor appears) and the window will then jump to the front. I've had this problem for about a year now and it happens at least a dozen times a day, but it doesn't do this all the time - seems random. I hope I have explained the issue fully (and you've understood it) and would appreciate any constructive answers or comments to solve this problem. Example: If I Alt-Tab from Google Chrome to Notepad and this problem randomly occurs, Google Chrome will remain in front of Notepad, however, I will be able to type text into Notepad while the window is behind Google Chrome. Clicking on Notepad's content area will not bring it to the front but clicking it's window border will. I'm starting to believe that this could be a bug in Google Chrome so I'll continue to watch if this between other applications.

• Using wildcard domains to serve images without http blocking

  I read that browsers sometimes block waiting for multiple images from the same host, and I'm trying to do everything I can to speed up page load times. One caveat: I need to serve files over HTTPS. Any opinions about whether this is feasible: Setup a wildcard cert for *.domain.com. Whenever I need an image, generate an number based on a hash mod 5 of the filename, and append it to an 'img' subdomain (eg img1.domain.com, img4.domain.com, img3.domain.com, etc.); the hash will make any filename always use the same subdomain, and therefore the browser should be able to cache the images Configure a dynamic virtualhost record to point all img#. subdomains to /var/www/img I am looking for feedback about this plan. My concerns are: Will I get warnings when my page has https:// links to multiple subdomains? Is the dynamic virtualhost record I'm talking about even possible? Considering the amount of processing this would require, is it likely to even produce any kind of overall benefit? I'm probably averaging a half-dozen images per page, with only half being changed on each page refresh. Thanks in advance for you feedback.

• Deleted printers keeps coming back - and multiply

  My users are on 2012 R2 RDS Session Host servers. I've used "Deploy Printers" (from Print Manager) to deploy 4 printers. The last week, I've had a lot of problems where users can't print. If I deleted the printer and added it again, they could print just fine. Now I've removed all printer deploying from GPO - and I have no printers in any login scripts. I did a gpupdate /force, but all the 4 printers are now listed 3 times... If I delete the printers and log off and back on, all the printers are popping up again. Sigh! This is driving me nuts. This script doesn't show any of the "SVFREJA" printers... • Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtual Network Setup

  Some background: I'm very much new to networking in general, and virtualization in particular. I'm trying to set up a series of VMs as we are transitioning to a thin client setup. I have been supplied a limited number of static ip addresses. The server is located in an offsite building which houses the network we use to connect to the internet, share folders etc. The setup I've been trying to go for is this: The host OS (Windows Server 2008 R2) is bound to one nic using one of the static ips (say, Nic1 and ip 10.255.6.61). I've set up another external virtual network attached to another physical nic , and a virtual private network attached to no nic. There is one VM running the same os (as the host). This VM is connected to both the external virtual network (and uses another static ip say Nic2 and ip 10.255.6.62) and also to the virtual private network (I gave it a static random ip 192.168.88.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0). This virtual private network is connected to all the other VMs. I'd like to share the internet connection with all the other VMs on the private virtual network, and so I installed the RRAS role on the server connected to Nic2, and selected the option to share the internet over the vpn. I've run through the RRAS wizard a few times, trying different configurations, but none of them seem to be letting the other vms connect to the 'net. The vms seem to connect to the virtual private network fine, they are assigned an ip address and everything, but no internet, and no rest of the network either. The other problem is in general I connect to the vms with RDP. Will that be possible with a setup like this? i.e. will the vms show up as computers on the network? If not, what are my other options? • PHP / SSH2 Multi-threading

  I'm basically done using SSH2 with PHP. Some may already that while using it, the PHP code actually waits for all the listed commands to be executed in SSH and when everything is done, it then gives back the results. Where that is fine for the work I am doing, but I need some commands to be multi-threaded. $cmd= MyCommand; echo $ssh-exec($cmd); So I just want this to run in parallel 2 times. I googled some stuff but didn't get along with it. For a basic thing, I came across to this way posted by someone but it didn't work out for me. for ($i = 0; $i < 2; $i += 1) { exec("php test_1.php $i > test.txt &"); //this will execute test_1.php and will leave this process executing in the background and will go to next iteration of the loop immediately without waiting the completion of the script in the test_1.php , $i is passed as argument . } I tried to put it this way exec("echo $ssh-exec($cmd) $i test.txt &"); in the loop but either it never entered the loop or the echo $ssh-exec failed. I don't really need a very neat multi-threading. Even a single second delay would do good, thank you.

• Mac OS X in Virtualbox says "You need to restart your computer"

  I've been trying to figure out for the past week how to get Snow Leopard reliably running in a VM. Right now I am using VirtualBox, and it runs fine for a while, but every once in a while (happened 3 times in the last few hours) I get the "You need to restart your computer" message. Unfortunately, it hasn't even lasted long enough to finish installing the operating system yet. I first tried VMWare, which was a pain to set up. I got it running ok, operating system installed, with the guest tools. Every once in a while though, it just stops running. I click inside the VM, and there's no mouse. It doesn't respond to keyboard input either. I have to reset the VM to get a response. I'm wondering if this is the same error. This happens with both Workstation and Player. • How can I create a simple Exchange 2010 backup solution?

  I'm sure this question's been asked a dozen times in one form or another, however after much searching, there doesn't appear to be an obvious simple recovery solution for a single Exchange box. We're using Exchange 2010 on a single server, the server hosts the AD and nothing else on the network uses the AD. The intent is to run this server as you would an externally hosted Exchange server - access only via HTTP (RPC mode or OWA) - all other ports blocked. I've a daily backup running, using Windows Server 2008 volume shadow service to backup the Exchange data to an external hard disk. My question is, how do I perform a bare metal recovery of this server? 1) Do I need to be explicitly including the active directory information in this nightly backup, or will it be there by virtue of the fact that this system is the primary AD server and the Windows backup service knows this? 2) I understand I can re-install Server 2008 onto my new hardware (in the case of hardware failure) and then run Exchange 2010 setup.exe with a /recover argument, referencing the backup volume. 3) It is acceptable to have some downtime during this recovery process. But is there anything else I should be aware of? Thanks! Duncan

• Building My First Computer And Suprise It Isn't Working

  I've had many years of experience working on and around computers, but this was my first foray into building one completely from scratch. So far that foray has been a disaster. My rig is completely assembled, and on its maiden power-up plus many power cycles I noticed three things: There were a few beeps from the BIOS POST upon powering up the first time, but I wasn't paying attention completely to the sequence. However, every time after that there are 0 POST beeps, even after taking off all hardware except the CPU and MB. There was no video being sent to the monitor. I run a HDMI cable from my video card to the monitor. The video card was LOUD. My card is a Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 which is known for not only being a powerhouse, but being pretty quiet. A few times during my power cycles it ran a lot quieter, but most of the time it was just super loud. Can anyone provide help for any of these issues? My MB, CPU, and Video Card are: MB: ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard CPU: i7 920 Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 5870

• How to configure traffic from a specific IP hardcoded to an IP to forward to another IP:PORT using i

  Unfortunately we have a client who has hardcoded a device to point at a specific IP and port. We'd like to redirect traffic from their IP to our load balancer which will send the HTTP POSTs to a pool of servers able to handle that request. I would like existing traffic from all other IPs to be unaffected. I believe iptables is the best way to accomplish this and I think this command should work: /sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -s $CUSTIP -j DNAT -p tcp --dport 8080 -d $CURR_SERVER_IP --to-destination $NEW_SERVER_IP:8080 Unfortunately it isn't working as expected. I'm not sure if I need to add another rule, potentially in the POSTROUTING chain? Below I've substituted the variables above with real IPs and tried to replicate the layout in my test environment in incremental steps. $CURR_SERVER_IP = 192.168.2.11 $NEW_SERVER_IP = 192.168.2.12 $CUST_IP = 192.168.0.50 Port forward on the same IP /sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -d 192.168.2.11 --dport 16000 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.2.11:8080 Works exactly as expected. IP and port forward to a different machine /sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -d 192.168.2.11 --dport 16000 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.2.12:8080 Connections seem to timeout. Restrict IP and port forward to only be applied to requests from a specific IP /sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -s 192.168.0.50 -d 192.168.2.11 --dport 16000 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.2.12:8080 Times out as well. Probably for the same reason as the previous entry. Does anyone have any insights or suggestions? thanks,

However, there are documents which name are only numbers. So consider the following case: http://www.mydomain.com/site/0055/0666.html Gets translated to: http://www.mydomain.com/site/0666/0055.html Which also matches my rewrite rule pattern, so I end up with "The web page resulted in too many redirects" errors from browsers. I have researched for a long time, and haven't found "good" solutions. Things I tried: Use the [END] flag. Unfortunately is not available on my Apache version nor it works with redirects. Use %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} on a RewriteCond clause to end the rewrite process (L). For some reason %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} is empty all the times I tried. Add a response header with the Header clause if my rule matches and then check for that header (see: here for details). Seems that a) REDIRECT_addHeader is empty b) headers are can't be set on the 301 response explicitly. There is another alternative. I could set a query parameter to the redirect URL which indicates it comes from a redirect, but I don't like that solution as it seems to hacky. Is there a way to do exactly what the [END] flag does but in older Apache versions? Such as mine 2.2.22. Thanks!

• Juniper NetScreen NS-5GT traffic monitoring

  I've done casual research into the subject and am truly dismayed at the lack of compatible tools for such a simple task. Maybe someone can provide assistance. We have a NetScreen NS-5GT in the office. I need to be able to get a glance of current traffic per endpoint -- I think the equivalent of 'get sessions' with byte counts/rates. I don't care about bars, graphs, and reports. Something as simple as a classic software firewall display would be perfect. I can't shell out money on something real like SolarWinds products, so a free solution is essential. I'm willing to do a little work but refuse to program something from scratch. It's not prudent right now for me to install a hub or otherwise mess around physically. There must be something out there I can use, maybe in combination. I don't believe I'm asking too much. Specific answers only please, e.g. monitoring software you know will actually work with this antiquated device. I've read about general approaches to the broader problem dozens of times already.

  I have a machine running a java app talking to a mysql instance running on the same instance. the app uses jdbc4 drivers from mysql. I keep getting com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException at random times. Here is the whole message. Could not open JDBC Connection for transaction; nested exception is com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: The last packet successfully received from the server was25899 milliseconds ago.The last packet sent successfully to the server was 25899 milliseconds ago, which is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. For mysql, the value of global 'wait_timeout' and 'interactive_timeout' is set to 3600 seconds and 'connect_timeout' is set to 60 secs. the wait timeout value is much higher than the 26 secs(25899 msecs). mentioned in the exception trace. • Windows/IIS Hosting :: How much is too much?

  I have 4 Windows 2003 servers running IIS 6. These servers host a bunch of unique web sites (in that they are all different in build/architecture/etc). The code behind these sites range from straight HTML, classic ASP, and 1.1/2.0/3.x flavors of .NET. Some (most) of the sites use a SQL backend, which is hosted on one or two different servers – not the IIS servers themselves. No virtualization on these servers and no load balancing for these particular sites. The problem I’m running into is coming up with some baseline metrics to determine, or basically come up with a “baseline score” to know when a web server has reached its hosting limit. Today, some basic information about each server is used: how much bandwidth does the server pump out, hard drive space availability, and basic (very basic) RAM & CPU utilization (what it looks like at peak traffic times.) I would be grateful if those of you that are 1000x smarter than I am could indulge me with your methods of managing IIS environments. Whether performance monitoring specifics, “score” determination as I’m trying to determine, or the obvious combination of both. Thanks in advance.

• Is there any proper documentation for mod-evasive?

  mod_evasive20 is one of the loaded modules on my httpd server. I read good things about how it can stop a DOS attack and wanted to try it out on my localhost. A search for mod_evasive turns up a blog post by the author which briefly describes what it does. Other than that, I can't seem to find a reference or a documentation on the apache modules site. I was wondering whether it is a module recognised by Apache since there is no mention of it on its website. I have a mod_evasive.conf file sitting in the /etc/http/conf.d folder that contains the following lines: LoadModule evasive20_module modules/mod_evasive20.so <IfModule mod_evasive20.c> DOSHashTableSize 3097 DOSPageCount 2 DOSSiteCount 50 DOSPageInterval 1 DOSSiteInterval 1 DOSBlockingPeriod 10 </IfModule> My understanding from the setting is that if I were to click refresh or send a form more than two times in a one second interval, apache will issue a 403 error and bar me from the site for 10 seconds. But that is not happening on my localhost. And I would like to know the reason. Thanks.
