• tightvncserver on ubuntu 12.04 server with ubuntu-desktop installed no unity

  The tight vnc server is running but unity does not get loaded. I changed the xstartup to: unset SESSION_MANAGER . /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc [ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup [ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources gnome-session & But still no unity. In wich log file can I look for the errors containing the starting of tightvncserver in combination with gnome and unity? Can somone point me at documentation abou tthe loading/starting sequence of Xserver, windows manager etc.? Is this a known issue?

• Why Adobe Air is so underrated for building mobile apps?

  I worked with Adobe Flash related technologies for the last 5 years, although not being a big fan of Adobe. I see some little bugs happening in some apps, but I cannot imagine why a lot of big companies do not even think to use use Adobe Air as a good technology for their mobile apps. I see a lot of mobile developer positions asking for experts in Android or iOS , but very much less positions asking for Adobe Air, even when Adobe Air apps have the advantage of being multi-plataform, with the same app working in Blackberry, iOS and Android. Is so much easier to develop a game using Flash, than using Android SDK, for example. It really have flaws (that I never saw) or it is just some kind of mass prejudgement? I also would like to hear what a project manager or a indie developer takes when choosing a plataform for building apps.

• Using SPServices &amp; jQuery to Find My Stuff from Multi-Select Person/Group Field

  Okay… quick blog post for all you SPServices fans out there. I needed to quickly write a script that would return all the tasks currently assigned to me.  I also wanted it to return any task that was assigned to a group I belong to. This can actually be done with a CAML query, so no big deal, right?  The rub is that the “assigned to” field is a multi-select person or group field. As far as I know (and I actually know so little) you cannot just write a CAML query to return this information. If you can, please leave a comment below and disregard the rest of this blog post… So… what’s a hacker to do? As always, I break things down to their most simple components (I really love the KISS principle and would get it tattooed on my back if people wouldn’t think it meant “Knights In Satan’s Service”. You really gotta be an old far to get that reference).  Here’s what we’re going to do: Get currently logged in user’s name as it is stored in a person field Find all the SharePoint groups the current user belongs to Retrieve a set of assigned tasks from the task list and then find those that are assigned to current  user or group current user belongs to Nothing too hairy… So let’s get started Some Caveats before I continue There are some obvious performance implications with this solution as I make a total of four SPServices calls and there’s a lot of looping going on. Also, the CAML query in this blog has NOT been optimized. If you move forward with this code, tweak it so that it returns a further subset of data or you will see horrible performance if you have a few hundred entries in your task list. Add a date range to the CAML or something. Find some way to limit the results as much as possible. Lastly, if you DO have a better solution, I would like you to share. Iron sharpens iron and all…   Alright, let’s really get started. Get currently logged in user’s name as it is stored in a person field First thing we need to do is understand how a person group looks when you look at the XML returned from a SharePoint Web Service call. It turns out it’s stored like any other multi select item in SharePoint which is <id>;#<value> and when you assign a person to that field the <value> equals the person’s name “Mark Rackley” in my case. This is for Windows Authentication, I would expect this to be different in FBA, but I’m not using FBA. If you want to know what it looks like with FBA you can use the code in this blog and strategically place an alert to see the value.  Anyway… I need to find the name of the user who is currently logged in as it is stored in the person field. This turns out to be one SPServices call: var userName = $().SPServices.SPGetCurrentUser({                     fieldName: "Title",                     debug: false                     }); As you can see, the “Title” field has the information we need. I suspect (although again, I haven’t tried) that the Title field also contains the user’s name as we need it if I was using FBA. Okay… last thing we need to do is store our users name in an array for processing later: myGroups = new Array(); myGroups.push(userName); Find all the SharePoint groups the current user belongs to Now for the groups. How are groups returned in that XML stream?  Same as the person <ID>;#<Group Name>, and if it’s a mutli select it’s all returned in one big long string “<ID>;#<Group Name>;#<ID>;#<Group Name>;#<ID>;#<Group Name>;#<ID>;#<Group Name>;#<ID>;#<Group Name>”.  So, how do we find all the groups the current user belongs to? This is also a simple SPServices call. Using the “GetGroupCollectionFromUser” operation we can find all the groups a user belongs to. So, let’s execute this method and store all our groups. $().SPServices({       operation: "GetGroupCollectionFromUser",       userLoginName: $().SPServices.SPGetCurrentUser(),       async: false,       completefunc: function(xData, Status) {          $(xData.responseXML).find("[nodeName=Group]").each(function() {                 myGroups.push($(this).attr("Name"));          });         }     }); So, all we did in the above code was execute the “GetGroupCollectionFromUser” operation and look for the each “Group” node (row) and store the name for each group in our array that we put the user’s name in previously (myGroups). Now we have an array that contains the current user’s name as it will appear in the person field XML and  all the groups the current user belongs to. The Rest Now comes the easy part for all of you familiar with SPServices. We are going to retrieve our tasks from the Task list using “GetListItems” and look at each entry to see if it belongs to this person. If it does belong to this person we are going to store it for later processing. You will notice in my code that I’m doing an AssignedToString.indexOf(GroupName) to see if the task belongs to the person. This could possibly return bad results if you have SharePoint Group names that are named in such a way that the “IndexOf” returns a false positive.  For example if you have a Group called “My Users” and a group called “My Users – SuperUsers” then if a user belonged to “My Users” it would return a false positive on executing “My Users – SuperUsers”.IndexOf(“My Users”). Make sense? Just be aware of this when naming groups, we don’t have this problem. This is where also some fine-tuning can probably be done by those smarter than me. This is a pretty inefficient method to determine if a task belongs to a user, I mean what if a user belongs to 20 groups? That’s a LOT of looping.  See all the opportunities I give you guys to do something fun?? Also, why am I storing my values in an array instead of just writing them out to a Div? Well.. I want to pass my data to a jQuery library to format it all nice and pretty and an Array is a great way to do that. Take it and run with it. Make it something cool (and tell me how you did it). Another possible way to improve performance in this scenario is to use a DVWP to display the tasks and use jQuery and the “myGroups” array from this blog post to hide all those rows that don’t belong to the current user.   Hello ! In Windows I was using Cisco VPN client to connect with VPN. In connection properties I set only hostname and choose certificate which are stored in C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client\Certificates. I moved yesterday to Ubuntu and I need to be able to connect with that host using those certificates too. I know that there is vpnc and network-manager-vpnc but it not allows (or I do not know about it) to set cerificates dir. Can someone tell me how to connect with VPN using certificates ?

• XNA: Auto-populate content within the content project based on current folder/file structure and content management for large games

  1) Is it possible to implement a system where I can simply drop a new image into my content project's folder and VS will automatically see that and bring it into the project for compiling? 2) Similarly, if I wanted a specific texture I could state something like var texture = Game.Assets.Image["backgrounds/sky_02"]; (where Game is the standard XNA Game class and Assets is some kind of content manager statically defined within Game). I know this is fairly simple to implement manually and have done such things in the past (static Dictionary defined within Game) except this only works for relatively small games where you can have all assets loaded at the start without much issue. How would you go about making this work for games where content is loaded and unloaded based on level / area? I'm not asking for the solution, just how you would go about this and what things you would have to be aware of. Thanks.

• Alt+F2 (Run Application) doesn't work for custom commands

  In order to speed up Android development, I've edited my ~/.bashrc to add some paths to PATH: export PATH=${PATH}:/opt/android-sdk/tools:/opt/android-sdk/platform-tools This works just fine from the command line (I can just type android and, no matter where I am, the Android SDK and AVD Manager will start up just fine. However, if I try to type android in the Alt+F2 dialog (Run Application), it gives the following error: Could not open location 'file:///home/felix/android' Error stating file '/home/felix/android': No such file or directory Why is that? What PATH does the Run Application dialog use?

• Where are bluetooth received files saved

  I have used Blueman and the default Bluetooth manager an every time I accept the file transfer from the Phone to the PC, it shows that it is transferring and even notifies me that the transfer was successful but I can not find the image anywhere. Where are files stored after sending them via Bluetooth to the PC? I already checked my Home folder. The Picture folder which I thought it would be the one for images. Then the document folder and afterwards I did a huge check on all folders under /home. No luck. Is nowhere. I even checked this answer with no luck.

  I have installed an Ubuntu Server. It obviously comes with no graphical interface. I tried to install it with: apt-get install xserver-xorg xfonts* gnome gdm Then I got an error message trying to login with Gnome and eventually I uninstalled everything: apt-get remove xserver-xorg xfonts* gnome gdm However, it seems Ubuntu still has some scripts trying to launch Gnome since when starting I get: Starting GNOME Display Manager fail ... Stopping system v run level compatibility And the system stops forever (I know I can use ALT+F1) What should I modify to have this completely uninstalled? I cannit find anything on the rc2.d...

• Maximized Office 2007 gets cut off on multi-monitor setup with different resolutions

  I've got an external monitor plugged into my laptop that I like to use for typing up documents, but I've noticed that when Word is maximized it gets cut off at where the primary monitor's bounds are. Is this a bug in Wine (i'm using version 1.3.32), or with my Window Manager (metacity with compositing enabled, version 2.34.1), with my graphics drivers (nouveau) or something else? I know that I can fix it by unmaximizing (it doesn't get cut off and I can resize to the entirety of the second monitor), but it keeps on maximizing itself as it (rightly so) knows that it should be taking up the entire screen. I don't really want to use the "Emulate a virtual desktop feature", I would prefer to find the source of this issue.

But after restarting windows today, started receiving error messages & Wobble effects are disappeared. Also, other settings created by me in my last login, like small sidebar icons, too disappeared & unable to find even option in "All Settings Appearance" to resize the icons.   I'm a PHP developer on Linux, and my manager wants a business intelligence dashboard. He wants to see in real-time our profit/loss stuff in fancy charts, based on our software sales. I could code it all from scratch and use Google Charts API or some other charts API to help me. However, I wanted to know if there was a free, open source, PHP-based business intelligence package out there, or some sort of widget framework that I could start with. That way, I can build the BI widgets inside that framework and not have to do everything from scratch. I apologize ahead of time if this is the wrong stackexchange where to place this query.   Over the years, I have experienced many different styles of software development. In the early days, most of the development was Waterfall development. In the last few years, I’ve become an advocate of Scrum. As I talked about last month, many people have misconceptions about what Scrum really is. The reason why we do Scrum at Veracity is because of the difference it makes in the life of the team doing Scrum. Software is for people, and happy motivated people will build better software. However, not all executives understand Scrum and how to get the information from development teams that use Scrum. I think that these executives need a support system for managing Agile teams. Historical Software Management When Henry Ford pioneered the assembly line, I doubt he realized the impact he’d have on Management through the ages. Historically, management was about managing the process of building things. The people were just cogs in that process. Like all cogs, they were replaceable. Unfortunately, most of the software industry followed this same style of management. Many of today’s senior managers learned how to manage companies before software was a significant influence on how the company did business. Software development is a very creative process, but too many managers have treated it like an assembly line. Idea’s go in, working software comes out, and we just have to figure out how to make sure that the ideas going in are perfect, then the software will be perfect. Lean Manufacturing In the manufacturing industry, Lean manufacturing has revolutionized Henry Ford’s assembly line. Derived from the Toyota process, Lean places emphasis on always providing value for the customer. Anything the customer wouldn’t be willing to pay for is wasteful. Agile is based on similar principles. We’re building software for people, and anything that isn’t useful to them doesn’t add value. Waterfall development would have teams build reams and reams of documentation about how the software should work. Agile development dispenses with this work because excessive documentation doesn’t add value. Instead, teams focus on building documentation only when it truly adds value to the customer. Many other Agile principals are similar. Playing Catch-up Just like in the manufacturing industry, many managers in the software industry have yet to understand the value of the principles of Lean and Agile. They think they can wrap the uncertainties of software development up in a nice little package and then just execute, usually followed by failure. They spend a great deal of time and money trying to exactly predict the future. That expenditure of time and money doesn’t add value to the customer. Managers that understand that Agile know that there is a better way. They will instead focus on the priorities of the near term in detail, and leave the future to take care of itself. They have very detailed two week plans with less detailed quarterly plans. These plans are guided by a general corporate strategy that doesn’t focus on the exact implementation details. These managers also think in smaller features rather than large functionality. This adds a great deal of value to customers, since the features that matter most are the ones that the team focuses on in the near term and then are able to deliver to the customers that are paying for them. Agile managers also realize that stale software is very costly. They know that keeping the technology in their software current is much less expensive and risky than large rewrites that occur infrequently and schedule time in each release for refactoring of the existing software. Agile Executives Even though Agile is a better way, I’ve still seen failures using the Agile process. While some of these failures can be attributed to the team, most of them are caused by managers, not the team. Managers fail to understand what Agile is, how it works, and how to get the information that they need to make good business decisions. I think this is a shame.   Hi, After upgrading the Ubuntu to 10.04 my Nautilus file manager gives lot of problem. Nautilus freezes after few minutes of start. I tried with Thunar, but I did not like that. Now I have Dolphin too, when Nautilus goes problem, then I start work with Dolphin. I do not like this. I want to work on Nautilus or equivalent one. I work with lot of images using GIMP and Inkscape. I tried many things including reinstalled the OS for 6 time in 4 months. I cannot leave Ubuntu, but I am limbing. Some body help me to fix it. • How to remove tearing in videos with Nvidia driver?

  I'm using ubuntu 11.10 as my HTPC OS on ION board. Tearing was always a big problem but this guide (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/01/how-to-fix-video-tearing-in-videos-nvidia-ubuntu/) used to solve it in previous versions. I mean it used to because it doesn't solve it anymore. I tried making same changes (although compiz config is little different and same options are in different panels) but with no success. I also tried to manually set resolution and refresh rate of HDTV in nvidia settings - no changes at all. I know that open source drivers would solve a problem but it's not an option because I need VDPAU acceleration.
