• Only One GPU Detected in the Nvidia Quadro NVS 450

  I just built myself an new workstation and now only 2 of 3 monitors are working. I built the nvidia driver by downloading it and installing with ./Nvidia... Before when I ran nvidia-settings I saw two GPUs listed but now I only see one. • Upgrading from 11.10- to 12.04 Hangs at "mysql: restarting..."

  I'm trying to upgrade from Ubuntu Server 11.10 to 12.04 using Update Manager. I figured out that I had to click the arrow next to 'Terminal' and select OK a couple times. Now it's supposed to be "Installing the upgrades" but it's frozen trying to restart mysql for the second time mysql: restarting.... Apache2, atd and cups were all restarted twice after "Restarting services possibly affected by the upgrade". It's been stuck here for nearly an hour. I read here about killing processes, but I can't get a terminal window to open. EDIT: I don't know if this matters but there are 6 occurrences in the Distrobution Upgrade window that say: debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Gnome debconf: (Unable to load Gtk -- is libgtk2-perl installed?) debconf: falling back to frontend: Dialog I should have left the server alone and never run apt-get install ubuntu-desktop yesterday. • How can I convince management to deal with technical debt?

  This is a question that I often ask myself when working with developers. I've worked at four companies so far and I've become aware of a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than use something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refactoring or extending the application. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving. The company then becomes a revolving door with developers coming in and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?

• How can I run Openbox using the GNOME/Openbox session?

  I want to be able to run openbox as my window manager while running GNOME. If I install openbox, I get the additional choices at the GDM login window of a 'GNOME/Openbox' and an 'openbox session'. If I log in with the 'openbox session', it starts openbox successfully. However, if I log in using the 'GNOME/Openbox' session so that I can run GNOME but just replace metacity with openbox, I find that openbox does not start, and that metacity is managing my application windows. It looks something is not working in the GNOME/Openbox session in 10.04 (and possibly other versions of Ubuntu). I know that I can manually replace metacity with openbox by typing 'openbox --replace', but I want to know the correct way of starting openbox in a GNOME environment automatically at logon.

  I have a hosted website using a free hosting service, I received an email this afternoon saying that I have been suspended because my account has been compromised. Basically, someone is using my email account to mass send spam. I've changed all the passwords and everything but when my Gmail pulls the emails from the host it's still downloading loads of spam messages that show like this: This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. • sbackup: can not mount FTP automatically

  In the sbackup configuration GUI i set the ftp://user:pw@online/storage and it's marked as successfully connected. After daily backup time, I checked the ftp and it was empty. In the error mail it says: Error in _do_mount: volume doesn't implement mount [ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED - Operation not supported for the current backend.] Unable to mount: volume doesn't implement mount File access manager not initialized When restarting the sbackup GUI, it is no longer connected to the ftp and i have to click the button again to connect the remote directory - although it still knows my user/pw. How to save this permanently?

• How do I get Picasa 3.9 to play .MOV files?

  I have been using Picasa for years, first in XP then in Ubuntu from 8.04 onwards & now in Lubuntu 11.10. For 11.10, I downloaded Picasa3.9.0 from FileHippo & installed it in Wine. Everything works well, except it doesn't play videos from my camera - it just shows a thumbnail - whereas earlier versions played videos OK. The videos appear as **.MOV (QuickTime video) in file manager, & can be played by, for instance, GNOME MPlayer or Movie Player (but not properly by Banshee...). Is there some simple way of getting Picasa 3.9 to play them?

After Updating, now when ever I boot the system, It get stuck at starting bluetooth Daemon Ok / Stopping Bluetooth Daemon Fail.and after long wait its get start to GUI Mode, but with no mouse detection. So need to reboot by pressing CTL+ALT+DEL and when I select recovery mode - Boot in Generic -- It boot perfectly. How can I set the same as default, and remove the error boot loader script. I am no expert to linux or Kernel.

• My ASUS U32U with fresh Xubuntu install shows a black screen 50-80% of the startups

  I have recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 with Xubuntu-package on my ASUS U32U notebook (Radeon HD 6320 GPU). The issue I have is that more often than not, after the GRUB-select screen I get a black screen, and three times total white lines (kind of) flashes very quickly (with maybe 5 seconds between each flash). I'm not even able to get to the login-screen (nor the Xubuntu loading screen). At first I thought it was simply me having installed something dumb or messed up some settings, but even after reformatting the partition and installing ubuntu again, the problem remains. Before I formatted it xfce4's window manager wouldn't start either, but it does now (when I am able to see anything). I can access the virual consoles (ctrl+alt+f1), but I can't see anything, but I've managed to shutdown the computer by using it (sudo shutdown -h now).

• Upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04

  On doing an upgrade from 10.10. to 11.04 using Upgrade Manager everything works fine. But on installing a software that bundle its owns runtime environment( loader and system files) and installs the custom runtime ( basically loader) in the location where the native one resides, the above mentioned upgrade fails.(Upgrade starts and after sometime it encounters an error and aborts.) Basically , /usr/bin/dpkg throws up an error on being unable to locate a system shared library in the aforesaid third party runtime folder ( /usr/bin/dpkg should not search the third party runtime folder.Instead it should look at the system default folder) But if we remove the installed third party loader from the default system location /lib and place it in some other location , the upgrade problem goes away. This makes me believe /usr/bin/dpkg invokes(loads) the wrong loader and as such goes looking for the dependent libraries in the third party folder. Can someone take a look at this ? is there some bug with dpkg

• Inkscape won't open .cdr files

  Hello I'm running Kubuntu 12.04 and I've installed Inkscape because I need to edit a .cdr file, Inkscape works like normal but the sole task I need it to do is edit said .cdr file which I understand it should be capable off by default. Whenever I try to open the file though I get the following error: UniConvertor failed: The eror itself is longer but what it seems to be saying that it can't find this application, and I myself haven't found it in the package manager. If someone has experienced something similar or has a simple solution for editing cdr's I'm no artist I just need to change some names, I would be very gratefull. The full error.

• cannot install build essential from Ubuntu 10.10 cd

  after a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 i tried to install build-essential from the Ubuntu installation CD. I put the cd in the cdrom and in the software repositories i checked the box install from cd(Ubuntu 10.10 release Maverick Meerkat). Then i reloaded the software repositories. The synaptic manager then tried to download some repository related files but failed to do so as i didn't have internet connection. Then i open a terminal and wrote "sudo apt-get install build-essential". It prompted me if i want to install build essential y/N. I typed y but the terminal showed some errors and was not installed. I also tried to add the CD in the software repositories. I clicked add and it prompted me to insert a CD while the CD was still inside the cdrom. I clided "ok" then and it showed it could not find any cd. What is wrong ?

Here’s what we’re building: What is Farseer The Farseer Physics Engine is a collision detection system with realistic physics responses to help you easily create simple hobby games or complex simulation systems. Farseer was built as a .NET version of Box2D (based on the Box2D.XNA port of Box2D). While the constructs and syntax has changed over the years, the principles remain the same. This tutorial will walk you through exactly what Emanuele create for Flash but we’ll be doing it using C#, XNA and the Windows Phone platform. The first step is to download the library from its home on CodePlex. If you have NuGet installed, you can install the library itself using the NuGet package that but we’ll also be using some code from the Samples source that can only be obtained by downloading the library. Once you download and unpacked the zip file into a folder and open the solution, this is what you will get: The Samples XNA WP7 project (and content) have all the demos for Farseer. There’s a wealth of info here and great examples to look at to learn. The Farseer Physics XNA WP7 project contains the core libraries that do all the work. DebugView XNA contains an XNA-ready class to let you view debug data and information in the game draw loop (which you can copy into your project or build the source and reference the assembly). The downloaded version has to be compiled as it’s only available in source format so you can do that now if you want (open the solution file and rebuild everything). In a production release you’ll be doing the rendering yourself of each object but we cheat a bit for the demo and let the DebugView do it for us. The other thing it can provide is to render out a panel of debugging information while the simulation is going on. This is useful in tracking down objects, figuring out how something works, or just keeping track of what’s in the engine. Lines 49-67: Here we create a rigid body (Farseer only supports rigid bodies) to represent the floor that we’ll drop objects onto. We create it by using one of the Farseer factories and specifying the width and height. The ConvertUnits class is copied from the samples code as-is and lets us toggle between display units (pixels) and simulation units (usually metres). We’re creating a floor that’s 480 pixels wide and 50 pixels high (converting them to SimUnits for the engine to understand). We also position it near the bottom of the screen. Values are in metres and when specifying values they refer to the centre of the body object. Lines 77-78: The game Update method fires 30 times a second, too fast to be creating objects this quickly. So we use a variable to track the elapsed seconds since the last update, accumulate that value, then create a new box to drop when 1 second has passed. We do this with the Step method which takes in the time interval. Here we just loop through all the entities and anything that’s dropped off the screen (below the bottom) gets removed from the World. This keeps our entity count down (the simulation never has more than 30 or 40 objects in the world no matter how long you run it for). Too many entities and the app will grind to a halt. Lines 125-130: Farseer knows nothing about the UI so that’s entirely up to you as to how to draw things. Farseer is just tracking the objects and moving them around using the physics engine and it’s rules. You’ll still use XNA to draw items (using the SpriteBatch.Draw method) so you can load up your usual textures and draw items and pirates and dancing zombies all over the screen. Instead in this demo we’re going to cheat a little. In the sample code for Farseer you can download there’s a project called DebugView XNA. This project contains the DebugViewXNA class which just handles iterating through all the bodies in the world and drawing the shapes. So we call the RenderDebugData method here of that class to draw everything correctly. In the case of this demo, we just want to draw Shapes so take a look at the source code for the DebugViewXNA class as to how it extracts all the vertices for the shapes created (in this case simple boxes) and draws them. You’ll learn a *lot* about how Farseer works just by looking at this class. That’s it, that’s all. Simple huh? Hope you enjoy the code and library. Physics is hard and requires some math skills to really grok. The Farseer Physics Engine makes it pretty easy to get up and running and start building games. • How do I fix dragging windows to the adjacent workspace?

  I installed CompizConfig-Settings-Manager and I put on all the settings I liked and had in 11.10, including the ability to drag my windows to the adjacent workspace. It's under the Desktop Wall section, on the Edge Flipping tab and I've checked "Edge Flip Move" and "Edge Flip DnD." In 11.10, the movement was smooth between each workspace, and the window would still be "grabbed" in the same place. In 12.04, it's leaving the window behind and the mouse appears to be "grabbing" nothing, but I'm still holding onto the window, and I can still move and place it within the workspace (or indeed the previous workspace as it won't appear in the desired place until I drag the mouse all the way to the edge of the screen). Any way to fix this? I'm running 12.04 beta 2.

• KVM guest disk performance

  My KVM guest does max. 200MB/s although the host does easily 700MB/s (Raid 0 with 4 SSDs). Configuration: File-based storage (raw), cache none. Host 24 cores, 96GB ram, Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and virt-manager. I suspect the CPU to be the bottleneck (one core goes up during hdparm). Anyone experienced the same or has an explanation ? Edit: one more info: guest is the same as host (Ubuntu 12). Same poor disk performance observed with Windows 2008 R2 and Suse Enterprise Linux (9 or 10 I think). Max 1 guest running.
