• Linux (Kubuntu 9.10): Strange DNS problem [seems to be IPv6 issue]

  Hi, I'm experiencing strange problems with my Kubuntu 9.10 when doing DNS requests from various applications. The requests are extremely slow, so loading any pages in Firefox or Konqueror, doing package installations in Kpackagemanager and other apps is really painful, while for example Opera doesnt have any problems, and ping is normally fast as well for DNS pings. I checked the proxy settings of both the used applications as well as of the general system and there are none, so to me it doesn't seem as there was something inbetween.. Does anybody have an idea on what to check for possible problem sources or how to solve this ? I'm behind a DSL home router which does the DHCP (and works well with my other computer). Any kind of advice would be really helpful. Edit: It seems to be some kind of IPv6 problem, as I could get it to work by disabling IPv6 explicitly in Firefox. Is there a general solution to this ?

• How good is PDF password protection?

  It appears that Word's password protection is not really good, at least until Office 2003, if I read this SU entry correctly. I'm under the impression that Acrobat's PDF password protection should be better (it says 128-bit AES for Acrobat 7 and higher). Is that true? Of course, it depends on the strength of the password used, but assuming I protect my PDF with a password like sd8Jf+*e8fh§$fd8sHä, am I on the safe side? Like, say, for sending confidential patient information - not really valuable, but potentially highly sensitive.

• Use Internet Explorer 6 and 7 in Virtual Box.

  Hello. I am trying to install the vhds (virtual hard drive image) of IE6 on XP and IE 7 on XP packs available from Microsoft on Virtual Box. Virtual Box will only mount CD/DVD's and/or ISO's. How do I get it to use the Microsoft files? I need this to test web pages in IE6/IE7s. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. Is there a way to do this, or another way that will allow me to load XP/IE6 and XP/IE7 in Virtualbox Edit: Ok I got it to work but it says XP must be updated in 3 days due to hardware changes. Microsoft said this would be activated til January 1st 2010. Is there a way to bypass that?

• Thesaurus software needed for Windows XP

  Can anyone recommend (free) Thesaurus software for Windows XP (that isn't WordWeb)? It has to work with British English. I want to install standalone software that gives me easy access (right click, keyboard shortcut or something) to alternatives to the selected word when I'm writing, whether it's an email, a text doc in notepad, on an internet forum or whatever. I've tried WordWeb but found it pretty horrible - I want something that acts more like the Thesaurus in MS Word, giving a dozen or so decent alternatives to the selected word.

• can't properly shutdown ubuntu and sound problem on HP mini 311 netbook

  hi, I recently bought a HP mini 311 netbook. I replaced its harddrive and installed ubuntu 10.04. Since then, I have encountered some very strange problem with its sound and shutdown/reboot. At times, when I start the computer, it will have no sound, on the GUI the sound is at max, but no sound is available. This sometimes also happen after after upgrades, hibernate, and toggling the wireless radio button. Strangely, when the sound is out the device will also refuse to be shutdown. If I shutdown the computer using the GUI, it will simply go back to the log in screen without actually shutting down. If I use "sudo shutdown 0", the computer will hang on the loading screen of the shut down process. I had to force the pc to shutdown by holding the power button down. usually (probably always) after I force a turn-off then start off again. the sound and shutdown become normal. I wonder if anyone have clues regarding to the cause of this problem. This the info about the computer: 1) installed ubuntu 10.04LTS RC, later upgraded to formal released version. 2) cat /proc/asound/version == "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21." however, when doing 'alsaconf' the version displayed is 1.0.23 any help is appreciated. • Setup for a live (low-latency) audio video broadcast over Wi-Fi?

  The Upgrade We are capturing audio (from mixer) and video (from a camera) from a main auditorium and passing it to separate rooms within the building. We used to have done this via manual audio/video cables and wires. We wanted to "upgrade" the system and wirelessly broadcast the stream via Wi-Fi. The Problem In our current setup (Wirecast running on A10 on a Wireless-N network), we have the problem of delay. Our streams are delayed from a minute up to five minutes on the clients (laptop/iPad/Android). This had not been a problem from the previous wired connections. Since the wireless network is local, we thought that a delay of less than a second should be achievable. Our Question And so it goes. Anybody there who has any experience for a setup that has both low latency and at the same time user-friendly to clients streaming in the program? Any recommendations would be highly appreciated. (Our current setup in on Windows 7, but setup on a dedicated Linux box is preferred, if achievable.)

Should I be using -eq or = for testing the return value? From what I can tell -eq tests strings and = tests numerals, but I'm not sure what the type of the return value is.

• Forward a port with modem (with built-in but disabled router) + a separate router

  I have a Motorola SBG6580 that is a modem and a wireless router in one. However, the wireless router part was bad so I disabled it and got a separate wireless router. I can go into the configuration pages of both the modem and the router now, and I'm confused as to which device needs to be configured for port-forwarding. I have a raspberry pi that I want to set up as a webserver. Do I configure the router, the modem, or both? Right now, the SBG6580's 1st LAN is connected to the wireless router's WAN, and the internet is working well. Note that the SBG6580 only has 4 ports, and I'm assuming they're LAN,as they are not labeled.

• UNRAID V4.7: Lost write permission on Win7/Android devices

  I'm currently running V4.7 and I haven't touched any of the user or share settings, and I'm periodically losing read.write permission on both my windows 7 pc and my android tablet connecting over the wireless. Sometime I can access my shares and see the folder directories, but when attempting to open a folder windows denies me access saying I don't have the proper permission. This is after I have logged in with my main account that has full read/write access of everything, same on my android device. This all started when I attempted to delete a large amount of files (8gb) to make more room and about half way through started getting permission errors. What could be causing this? Thanks

• My Intel Core i3 frequently shuts down due to "Processor Thermal Trip error"

  My Desktop PC running Windows 7 on Intel Core i3 dual processor machine started shutting down during the boot process a couple of days ago. I left it alone for about 48 hours and tried again. The boot process informed me about Processor Thermal Trip as being the cause of boot failures and suggested a Windows recovery process. I went through the recovery process which completed without problems. The PC booted normally and Windows 7 worked as expected but after 10 minutes it again tripped and now whenever I start it, it shuts down during the boot process. What should I do next?... is there a boot menu / setup settings that needs to be adjusted to avoid it... Or is there a hardware problem (which seems unlikely as the machine occasionally boots perfectly )?

When I restart Xorg everything is fine again and the problem doesn't occur until next reboot. I tried to upgrade the kernel from stock 2.6.32 to 2.6.39 from unstable repository but that didn't help. • In Ubuntu, how do I change my default Greek font?

  I'm taking a course in ancient Greek, and I store notes and flash cards on my computer. However, by default Ubuntu uses a modern Greek font. This changes some noticable things--for example, a circumflex is ? instead of a?. I can type the circumflex by switching back to english and entering the unicode combining character u0311 (which is what I just did to type the second a), but obviously this is very cumbersome. I've installed the "ttf-linex" package from the Ubuntu repositories, which claims to include an ancient Greek font. But I have no idea how to enable this font for whenever I switch to the Greek keyboard layout.

  Using a VM I installed Windows 2008 Server x64 and as the image below shows, added the IIS Role full image and assigned all role features of IIS full image But if I have an ASP.NET (aspx) page that does (C#) Session["test-session"] = "A"; and read in other page I always get nothing! NOTE: I do have an entire ASP.NET web application, the example above is to be succinct and explicit on what is the problem I'm facing. • Eclipse And Linux: Keyboard unusable after gnome-screen-saver

  Hi, I know this is not programming related. But I can't find any topics on Google or UbuntuForums. So the problem is: When gnome-screensaver starts on the moment Eclipse has the focus and I wake up again my laptop, Eclipse doesn't listen to keyboard-events. To solve this I have to change the focus to another program and then back to Eclipse. Than it works again. This isn't a real problem, but it would be nice if someone can solve it. Thanks

The normal "dling" when logging in was replaced by a more direct "DIING!". It was only like that in one beta version thought.   I'm attempting to setup share permissions on a Brazilian server and wish to give Everyone read only access. However, the server's language is Brazilian (Portuguese), and it looks like the security groups' names have been translated. Does anyone know what this group is called in Portuguese? Is there an easy way to access this group which is not language sensitive (e.g. some constant value, such as the SID (S-1-1-0) which can always be used, regardless of locale settings)? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243330. NB: I tried using this SID, but on its own it did not work - though perhaps I need to format it in some way?

• How can I configure firefox to open links in the same window, but requests from external application

  I hate it, when sites decide for me, which links should open in a new window, and which in the same. The back-button doesn't work. Good thing is, firefox has the option browser.link.open_newwindow. If I set this to 1, all links with target=blank open in the same window, as it should be. But now also clicks in external programs (like the email-client or newsreader) on links open this in the same window, destroying the already opened website. How can I configure firefox to open links in a website always in the same window, but in external programs opened URLs always in a new one?

• How can I suppress /etc/issue without losing error messages?

  Is it possible to tell the ssh client to not print the connects of /etc/issue to stdout when connecting to a remote host, but to print out any other diagnostic (e.g. error) messages? Either using ssh -q or having LogLevel quiet in ~/.ssh/config suppresses the /etc/issue printing, but also turn off error messages. I've tried touching ~/.hushlogin as well - that stops /etc/motd being printed, but doesn't affect /etc/issue. The most obvious solution is just to remove /etc/issue, but company policy dictates the file be there with dire warnings about unauthorised access. This is non-negotiable. Unfortunately, I've got a bunch of scripts that run across quite a few hosts via ssh, and the log files are a) very large and b) full of legalese. Since quite a lot of stuff runs unattended, I don't want to lose any error messages that are printed.

  I have a user that for some reason lost her "My Site" & "My Links" link on her local computer. When she logs into a Citrix server she can see them. I have had her dump temp Internet files and put the site in her trusted sites but nothing is working. I think thins started after some Windows updates but not sure. Any ideas on this one? BTW, it's not turned off kin Central Admin and none of her group memberships have changed.

The command is the following one: putty -ssh -2 -P 22 USERNAME@SERVER_ADDR -pw PASS -m command.txt Where 'command.txt' is a shell script to execute in the server through SSH. If i launch this command from the Window command prompt, it works, the shell script is executed on the server machine. If i launch a build of the hudson job configured with this batch command, it doesn't work. The build is running... and running... and running.. without doing anything, and i have to stop it manually. So my question is: Is it possible to launch an external programm (i.e. putty) from an hudson job ? ps: i tried SSH plugin but... not a really good plugin (pre/post build, fail status of the commands launched not caught by hudson, etc.) Thanks in advance for your help.   It is possible Network Bridging for WiFi-to-Ethernet in linux instead of Ethernet-to-Ethernet? I have a CentOS 6.3 machine. I am using KVM and I want perform a brigde for virtualize more machines. This machine is connected only via wireless connection and it doesn't have a ethernet connection.
