  Hello, i will like to capture a substring part of a text choosing the number of characters but if any word is cut then get until de last blank. As example if this is the text: "This is an example of text lorem ipsum, etc..." and i would like to get for instance 12 characters that are: "This is an e". In this case example is cutted, then i would like to get "This is an". Its possible do this with Regular Expressions? Thanks in advance. Jose

  I need to put curly braces in a sentence according to the indexes. Suppose my input sentence is: "I am a girl and I live in Nepal." and I need to put curly braces according to [12, 15], [2, 4], [23, 25] These indexes are corresponding to the words "am", "and" and "in" respectively. The required output should be: "I {am} a girl {and} I live {in} Nepal." I have tried using substring but after it replaces first word, it then shifts the characters by two indexes and that is the problem I am having. Can anyone provide me solution to get the required output?

• SQL Server - Searching string with international characters using LIKE clause

  Hi, I have a field 'Description' which can have product descriptions with any unicode characters. If I search for a description which contains an international character, with a LIKE condition (word searched with does not have the international character) I get the following results: Ex: GEWÜRZTRAMINER is one of the descriptions. When I do: Select * from table where Description LIKE '%GEWURZTRAMINER%', it retrieves the entry. When I do: Select * from table where Description LIKE '%GEWURZ%', the entry is not retrieved. (Note: the search condition does not include the Ü but has a U) Is there a way around this so that I can retrieve with '%GEWURZ%' as well? SQl Server 2008

• Why would you precede the main() function in C with a data type?

  Many are familiar with the hello world program in C #include <stdio.h> main () { printf ("hello world"); return 0; } Why do some precede the main () function with int as in: int main() Also, I've seen the word 'void' entered inside the () as in: int main(void) It seems like extra typing for nothing, but maybe it's a best practice that pays dividends in other situations? Also, why precede main() with an int if you're returning a character string? If anything, one would expect: char main(void) I'm also foggy about why we return 0 at the end of the function.

  Hi I have created the following effects on the images seen here http://techavid.com/design/test3.html . You see when you hover and then click on each image, they go from grey to color. When you click on one - the others go grey and the one clicked remains color. That's cool, but now I need the text 1st: Sun for example to display and hide along with its graphic button. The word "Sun," is a link that needs to link out to a URL so it has to be separated from the image effect code. What jquery or javascript code do I need to do this? thanks, jonah p.s. My problem is, when I have a list near the top of the blog it is sometimes included in the preview, however the end list tag usually never is. So how can I check the $preview variable for a starting list tag, and if it is found, check for an ending tag and if it's not there add one. • How do I get a MessageBox like information window to appear in Java?

  I'm learning Java and I have no idea how to do this. I dragged a button on the form in Netbeans, double clicked it and it created this event: @Action public void HelloClickMethod() { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(this, "The message!", "This is supposed to be the MessageBox title."); } This is the exception the IDE brings up. Cannot find symbol. Symbol: showMessageDialog() Edit 1 Now I changed it to this: @Action public void HelloClickMethod() { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(this, "The message!", "This is supposed to be the MessageBox title.",JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE); } However the IDE is saying I have an error in the word 'this'. "Cannot find symbol". I don't understand. Why is it so dificult and why are the errors so esoteric. :P

  Is there an exact/correct term to describe this difference between the syntax/constructs of programming langauges e.g VB6 with its (if ... else ... endif) and C# with its curly braces for conditional statements. I'm using VB6 syntax and C# as examples since I'm more familiar with their syntax. For example, Visual Basic 6's syntax uses a more verbose, natural language like structure. If (id = 0) Then id = MyObject.Add(Me) Else Call MyObject.Update(Me) End If while C# has more concise syntax like: if (id == 0) { id = MyObject.Add(this); } else { MyObject.Update(this); } Conciseness? Natural languageness? Or is there a more "scientific" word for describing syntax?

• why is link generated in YUI javascript failing to render in rails?

  Using YAHOO.widget.treeview to generate a table with three levels of data: module, submodule, and detail. If there is an image associated with a detail row the javascript generates a link: "<td><a href=\"/screenshot/show/" + rowData.id + "\">Screenshot</a></td>" that is appended to the html for the row. The url is generated correctly and the link appears. When clicked nothing happens except the word 'Done' appears in the browser status bar. Am calling the very same url from another page that does not use javascript and the screenshot page appears as expected.   How to obtain the last element of the array in Postgres? I need to do it declaratively as I want to use it as a ORDER BY criteria. I wouldn't want to create a special PGSQL function for it, the less changes to the database the better in this case. In fact, what I want to do is to sort by the last word of a specific column containing multiple words. Changing the model is not an option here. In other words, I want to push Ruby's sort_by {|x| x.split[-1]} into the database level. I can split a value into array of words with Postgres string_to_array or regexp_split_to_array functions, then how to get its last element?

• How to list all items in custom taxonomy with a permanlink in Wordpress

  Hi, Not sure how to word this. I've set up a type in Wordpress called Products. I also have two taxonomies linked to Products called Brands and Categories. When you create a product you can set to which Brand and Category the product belong to. It works perfectly when using the type as permalink to list everything within a type http://sitename.com/products but I can't seem to get the taxonomies working in the same way, ie. list all the items within a taxonomy (like an archive, I suppose): http://sitename.com/brands http://sitename.com/categories Is this possible, and if so, what could I possibly be doing wrong? I would try and set up some rewrite rules in functions.php, but I don't know what the query string looks like if you want to list items in a taxonomy, and if this is even possible. If it helps, I'm using the plugins More Types and Ultimate Taxonomy Manager to create the types and taxonomies.

• Manipulating both unicode and ASCII character set in C#

  I have this mapping in my C# application string [,] unicode2Ascii = { { "&#3001;", "\x86" } }; ஹ - is the unicode value for a tamil literal "ஹ". This is the raw hex literal for the unicode value saved by MS Word as a byte sequence. I am trying to map these unicode value "strings" to a hex value under 255 (so as to accommodate non-unicode supported systems). I trying to use string.replace like this: S = S.replace(unicode2Ascii[0,0], unicode2Ascii[0,1]); However the resultant ouput has a ? instead of the actual hex 0x86 stored. Any pointer on how I could set the encoding for the second element of that array to something like windows-1252? Or is there a better way to do this conversion? thanks in advance

  I need to replace some text that is on the page within the body tag. I am using javascript but have jquery available if needed. I basically need to replace test® (test with the registered trademark) with TEST® or tests® with TESTS® and it could even be test with TEST® or tests with TESTS®. I am able to uppercase them but its not liking to work for me with the ® sign, it wants to put duplicates on ones that already have it. Basically anything on the page that has the word test or tests should be TEST® or TESTS® if it is plural. Any help is appreciated.

  I'd like to write an axis label over two lines with an expression() statement. However, plotmath and expression won't allow this (e.g. subscript appear on the far right). I found this discussion circa 2005 of a similar issue but the work around that they offer doesn't translate to my application in ggplot2. A recent question addressed a a different permutation of multi-line expression statements, but again the work around provided doesn't apply here. • Update ancestors in a nested set?

  I am using nested sets to represent a tree in mysql, like so: Tree ID title lft rgt Given the ID of a node in the tree, what is the easiest / best way to UPDATE that node as well as all of it's ancestors? For example, let's say that the node ID (36) is 4 levels deep in the tree. I would like to update its title, as well as every parent node's title, all the way to the root, to the word "fish". (Should be four updates in all.) Thanks for your help!

  This concept has been brought to my attention before, but many people might know it from this popular comic here, where he uses stones instead of points on a paper. This concept is so abstract to me. A full-functioning computer that can manage algorithms, input, output, etc. without electricity? Surely, it's difficult to visualize because my definition of a computer is not exactly what the word sounds like COMPUTE-ER. Can someone help me bring the concept to light - the understanding, how to make one, etc? It seems like it'd be an interesting read, although I think I wouldn't be able to make it do anything. • Object value not getting updated in the database using hibernate

  I am using Spring,hibernate,jsf with jquery in my application. I am inserting a Question object in the database through the hibernate save query . The question object contains id ,question,answertype and reference to a form object using form_id. Now I want to alter the values of Question object stored in the database by altering the value stored in the list of Question objects at the specified index position. • Lucene.Net - How to treat a space-seperated phrase as a single token?

  I've implemented a search facility using Lucene.Net. The index includes UK academic qualifications, including "A Level". I'd like the users to be able to search using the phrase "A Level", but using the Standrad Analyser the "A" is stripped out as a stop-word and therefore only "Level" is indexed/searched. What's my best option to work around this? I'm guessing I need to somehow tokenise "A Level" to "A-Level" or similar by creating a custom analyser. Is this the best approach? Note that I want don't want the whole search to be a phrase query. i.e. in my search box I want the user to be able to enter <"A Level" AND English Maths Physics and this would return any with "A Level" and either of English MAths or Physics.   I need to find a way to do an INSERT INTO table A but one of the values is something that comes from a lookup on table B, allow me to illustrate. I have the 2 following tables: Table A: A1: String A2: Integer value coming from table B A3: More Data Table B: B1: String B2: Integer Value Example row of A: {"Value", 101, MoreData} Example row of B: {"English", 101} Now, I know I need to INSERT the following into A {"Value2", "English", MoreData} but obviously that won't work because it is expecting an Integer in the second column not the word "English", so I need to do a lookup in Table B first. Something like this: INSERT INTO tableA (A1, A2, A3) VALUES ("Value2", SELECT B2 FROM tableB where B1="English", MoreData); Obviously this doesn't work as-is ... Any suggestions?

• Why did the C# designers attach three different meanings to the 'using' keyword?

  The using keyword has three disparate meanings: type/namespace aliasing namespace import syntactic sugar for ensuring Dispose is called The documentation calls the first two definitions directives (which I'm guessing means they are preprocessing in nature), while the last is a statement. Regardless of the fact that they are distinguished by their syntaxes, why would the language developers complicate the semantics of the keyword by attaching three different meanings to it? For example, (disclaimer: off the top of my head, there may certainly be better examples) why not add keywords like alias and import? Technical, theoretical, or historical reasons? • Why are Asynchronous processes not called Synchronous?

  So I'm a little confused by this terminology. Everyone refers to "Asynchronous" computing as running different processes on seperate threads, which gives the illusion that these processes are running at the same time. This is not the definition of the word asynchronous. a·syn·chro·nous –adjective 1. not occurring at the same time. 2. (of a computer or other electrical machine) having each operation started only after the preceding operation is completed. What am I not understanding here?

• How to set a custom font for a spinner?

  Is there anyway to set a custom font or color for the selected item in a Spinner? For example, I open the spinner and click a priority of "High". I'm my layout containing the spinner, I would like to see the word "High" in red or a custom font. I can't seem to obtain the textview to make the necessary change. I always obtain a NullPointerException if I typecast the spinner.getSelectedView() to textview and attempt to set the color. any ideas? thanks in advance!
