  • How to move windows that open up offscreen?

    I have a dual monitor setup, and I recently played around with the positioning settings, and some of my single window applications do the favour of preserving where they were last closed, and opening in the same position later. Unfortuanately, that now places them out of the viewable area of my screens! Is there some way to force a particular window into the viewable area? If it matters at all, this is on Windows XP 32b.

  • Automatically restore windows network drive (red "X") via batch file

    i need check if a network drive is mapped and accessible. From time to time windows displays a red X on the drive, and i would need to manually click the drive in explorer to reconnect. I already found solutions which involve editing the registry which unfortunately isn´t possible. So i would need a batch file checking for connection, and (re-)mounting the drive.     RE: Putting this out there in case someone else runs into this issue. The intel chipset is on-board. I discovered the reason for the crappy resolution in windows 7 was that the memory to share with the video card was set to 1MB in the BIOS.   • Icons in windows 8 changed automatically

    The icons of my folders in Windows 8 have changed automatically ! Now it is similar to that of the Unknown File Type icon. My C: drive icon and some icons in the Explorer-Home menu had also changed, but they became normal after a restart. But the folder icons (Medium Size) don't change.     Hi, I'm looking for a command line tool for windows that will go over a directory tree (recursively) and output a list of all the files in there, and a checksum for each file (can be CRC, MD5, whatever). Esentially, what I want is to compare 2 big directory trees in 2 machines. I'm planning to take the outputs of running this tool in both, and diffing them to make sure they're identical. I appreciate any ideas.

However, I want this to only trigger if the active window is an Explorer window.     What's a good (preferably free) on-screen ruler for Windows? (Vista, if it matters.) I just need to measure a few things (in pixels) on the screen.     Hello, I'm looking for a way to make the popup toolbar menus on Windows XP's taskbar stay in place while you edit it, and only close when you tell it to--by clicking outside it, for example. Right now it disappears after each editing action--such as renaming a file or changing its position on the menu, and you have to click the again to pop the menu back up to do more editing.   • Windows 7 freezing after returning from idle.

    If i return to my windows 7 x64 computer after it has been idle for a couple of minutes it will respond for 3 seconds and after that everything freezes for around 5-30 seconds and then the computer starts working normally again. The freezing time varies and some times it even get stuck there forever requiring a hard reboot. This is very annoying as you can imagine, it's almost as slow as resuming from hibernation every time you left it idle enough to turn off the monitor.

  • Is there a way to password protect a windows application on Windows 7 without changing the exe?

    I want to password-protect a few applications (not just files/folders) on Windows 7, such that, there is no change to the protected application's .exe file itself. Since the .exe files can't be changed, "Empathy" and "Protect Exe" can't be used as they change the .exe file. I tried using WinGuard Pro and LockThis! also but they don't work for Microsoft Outlook and some other apps (that I need). Is it possible at all? Please help.

    I'm doing a fresh install of Windows 7 and I have an on board software RAID. I "need" to install the drivers via the infamous F6 process. Technically, it should be possible to do so after the OS has been booted, but long story short, this isn't going to work well for me. Is it possible to install F6 drivers during the installation using a USB, or must that always be done using floppies? What are my alternatives?

My VMWare player installation has setup the two network adaptor VMnet1 and VMnet8 and they are picked up as unidentified networks with no network access (i need this to activate my windows server installation on it). The option to change the network location is not available (this might be because of network policy on the domain despite having set this as configurable in the local security policy section). Is there anyway i can change how these networks are detected or alter the configuration of vmware to get around this?

  • How to get hibernate working on Windows 8?

    I have been using Windows 8 x64 Developers Preview as my primary OS on my laptop. Unfortunately I have been unable to enable hibernate (tried through registry and through powercfg.cpl). The closest I have got is that I was able to enable hibernate on pressing of power button, but that just turns of screen and keeps everything else running, I have to force shutdown to do anything. Do you know how I can get hibernate to work on my Dell Studio 17?
