• Boot failure after update and system crash 11.10

  I'm using: Dell XPS M1330 laptop, Ubuntu 11.10 32bits, single boot (only Linux OS), Virtualbox (with Windows XP on virtual machine). System crashed while working with a very heavy image on GIMP (and Virtualbox was on). During the same session, I made an automatic system update, but don't know what was exactly updated. After the crash the system doesn't boot. Always freezes on terminal screen but at different stages, ""Starting CUPS printing spooler/server", "Checking battery state", "mountall: plymouth command failed", etc. Sometimes indicates [failed] in some of the processes and sometimes they're all [ok]. Did a Boot info summary with boot-repair and gave me this report http://paste.ubuntu.com/1050743/ This is not a new install, have been using it for almost 6 months...though since last month it couldn't halt..it started shutting down and stopped at black screen with fan on and on/off light still on (I used to finish the shutdown process by forcing halt with a long-press of the power button). I don't know if these has anything to do with the boot failure. Is there anyway I can solve this issue (the boot failure) or make some sort of system check to find out what is the cause of the problem? • HowTo access Samba Share over VPN Tunnel?

  I don't know how to access a Samba share running on a Ubuntu 10.04 server through OpenVPN 2.1.0. I've installed & configured OpenVPN and everything works. The server end of the tunnel has the IP of 10.8.0.1. When I connect from XP (over our local network) I'm given the IP of 10.8.0.6. I can ping and trace route from both ends of the tunnel. Now, I'm lost...how to access the Samba share from XP and from OS X?

• Windows 7 - cancel mirror synchronisation

  I've got basic disk OS managed disk mirroring setup in Windows 7 for a couple of volumes. After a power failure the mirrors are currently resynching. These are only small volumes of data but the sync has not completed after more than 24 hours. Is there any way to stop this as it's driving me nuts? I need to get the machine back to a usable state to get some work done but it's a bit of a dog whilst this synch is going on. I've tried removing the mirrors but it won't let me do that whilst the re-sync is in progress.

• Two virtual computers using one laptop?

  Hi, I have a laptop and an external display. I am able to use the external display either as extended desktop OR duplicate desktop. I also use a separate keyboard and mouse. So effectively, the laptop acts just as a box without display. I want to know is it possible to use the laptop as 2 virtual PCs. (with separate control). I.E., one person uses the laptop as a laptop, and other person can simultaneously connect a keyboard and mouse and the external display and effectively get a second PC. OS I am using - windows (thought solution for other OSes are welcome). Laptop is a Dell Precision M6300. thanks JP

• Overlapping Samba Shares

  Is it OK to have samba shares that overlap, like the following: [whole-drive] path = /mnt/myusbdrive ... [music] path = /mnt/myusbdrive/music ... [movies] path = /mnt/myusbdrive/movies ... I have a mounted external HDD with music and movies, plus a whole bunch of other stuff like backups. I want to expose the music and movies directories as separate samba shares (probably with guest access), so that they're uncluttered with all the other stuff; and I want to expose the entire drive as a separate samba share (with higher permissions) for doing more administrative things across the drive. Does Samba behave well with this configuration? I'm wondering if I'd end up with problems like phantom writes if the same file is accessed at the same time across two different shares. Details: OS: Debian GNU/Linux wheezy/sid on Raspberry Pi HDD: NTFS, mounted as ntfs-3g. Samba: version 3.6.6

• How can I leave the remote screen locked when I ARD/VNC/etc. to my Mac?

  I'm currently using Jolly's Fast VNC and Mac OS X's built-in VNC server (System Preferences, Sharing, Screen Sharing) to access my iMac remotely. Here's my problem: When I'm using the iMac remotely, the screensaver deactivates and the screen is unlocked. If someone had physical access to my iMac they could walk up to it and start using it. Is there some way I can set things up so that when I'm using my iMac remotely the screen stays locked, like Windows XP Professional does when you're using RDP? I know I can use X remotely with the iMac locked, but I would like to use Mac applications remotely, too.

  Some friends gave me their old HandyCam and a bunch of tapes asking me to put them on a DVD. The model is Sony DCR-TVR103 and it records onto Hi8 digital tapes. It has a firewire port also. I am trying to use import function in iMovie on OS X 10.6. Every import though the video is super fast, like playing in fast forward. Ever seen anything like this? How can I import this video? • CentOS and Snapshots

  I'm planning on purchasing a virtual-dedicated server today and would like to pass a quick question by the community here before I do. I'm likely going to be getting CentOS, as that seems to be a pretty stable, and popular distro from what I can tell. One of the companies I contacted (MediaTemple) mentioned they provide snapshots just incase I start doing something that could potentially cripple my server - I could always restore the last snapshot. Another company (GoDaddy) said they would provide routine snapshots once a day, week, or month and back it up to a remote FTP for me to download. My question is this, is the "snapshot" capability provided in the OS itself? I'm not super-confident in my abilities yet to manage a server, so this functionality would be very attractive. Or, do I need to pick a host that provides this as an extra addon to the already rendered services?

• VMWare Workstation Performance

  Hi there, awhile ago I upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 x64 from Windows XP 32 bit edition. However not before virtualizing the physical installation and I continue to run it under VMWare Workstation today. The performance on the resulting VM is just absolutely atrocious! I've done a lot of uninstalling stuff that's not longer needed since the machine is virtual in an effort to reduce RAM, but in general the responsiveness seems sluggish. I also run the Virtual Machine on it's own separate HD that is seldom used by the host OS. I'm just hoping for some general tips in increasing VMWare performance anywhere, thoughts? EDIT: Both of the below answers were excellent starting points for me. However I did like the selected answer's strategies on disk management. I am running the Virtual Machine in a separate external hard disk, likely I'm going to have to reconfigure somehow. Thanks all!

• XenServer 6.2 crashes everytime I try to install a new Windows 7 x64 vm

  I'm running XenServer 6.2 with all patches and updates on two boxes. One box is an intel core i7 2600K.. works great. My latest box is an AMD A10 APU.. and everytime I try to install Windows 7 OS as a guest.. I get to the screen where Windows files start to expand, and suddenly the entire box freezes up. Is there a log I can check, and or a way to migrate a working Windows 7 image I created on Box 1 over to Box 2?

• How to configure a MInimal Ubuntu installation?

  I recently re installed Ubuntu using the mini.iso, but much to my dismay the mini.iso is not configured the same way as the Ubuntu desktop ISO some "problems" I'm facing such as: An Installation using the regular Ubuntu CD recognizes my active network connections in Network Manager, Installing with the mini.iso gives me a working connection however no connections are "active" in Network Manager displaying the message "The system network services are not compatible with this version." In a regular Ubuntu install connecting an Android phone to the PC mounts the phone's internal memory and sd card if present, Using the mini.iso the phone is detected as it appears with the command lsusb but it's not mounted and can't be mounted. In the same regards using the phone to tether it's connection to the PC via USB, the phone is connected to my (wifi) IN the regular Ubuntu install the phone is recognized as a networking device and is used as connection usb0, while in the mini.iso nothing happens, and trying to add the connection to /etc/network/interfaces results in the OS crashing. Just to make sure It wasn't a matter of my user not having the correct permissions or a lack of "groups", I've checked with an Ubuntu VM and the groups are the same, the networking files are the same, and the packages (except those of ubuntu-desktop such as Unity, Firefox, LibreOffice, and other non-essential software) are Installed in my PC, so what else is there to look for?. I'm sure I'm missing something, and I'd prefer not to install Ubuntu again, using the regular cd. How can I manage to get the same behaviour/configuration without reinstalling ?

  I have a project with a 2TB database ( 450.000.000 rows). I need to provide to the proyect a solution that gives FailOver and load Balacing, what do you recommend? We are going to use a NetApp Filer for the Data Files and for the File System of the Proyect. I read that SQl Clustering does not provide load balacing. If I cannnot have this feature and I have to go only to the FailOver what Server ( I presume that the key feature here is memory) would you recomend. We are adding 1.000.000 rows a day. Once the rows is inserted we are doing a lot of updates to that row for about 1 week then the row get static. Because of this I am thinking in some kind of history table or database or something like that. I am open to the Os servers implementation, I was thinking of a windows 2008 server with cluster but this depend of the database solution

• Configuring Server with no monitor

  Sitting in front of me is an HP DL 380 Generation 4 with no monitor. I'd like to install an OS on the thing but for reasons obvious, I can't. I got excited when I found the ILO port on the back but unless you have a subscription it has limited functionality. I was thinking maybe there was some software out there that booted into some kind of remote access server? When I tested it with a monitor (A friends) I set the BIOS to boot from USB so anything I can load onto a stick should boot. Ideas? Hacks?

• partitioning problems

  I had on my laptop a dual system (Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7) and someway the partitions messed-up. Windows stopped from booting, I just got a blinking cursor, but Ubuntu worked fine. I tried to fix the windows boot (fixmbr, fixboot, bootsect /nt60 C:/....) but now grub was overwritten and I have no OS. Finally I formatted the hdd (low format), installed Windows, partition hdd with paragon partition manager and now I want to install Ubuntu, but Ubuntu sees an empty hdd, weird, can anyone tell me what can I do? EDIT: I have created: partition 1: 100MB ntfs - windows reserved (drive B) partition 2: 50GB ntfs win 7 (drive C) partition 3: 50GB ext3 linux partition 4: 'the rest' ntfs for data (drive E) (the swap i will create after)

• Connection timeout when accessing Github

  I have exactly the same problem as described here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12849986/connection-timeout-when-accessing-github So I'll just copy & paste: I have some weird problems. When I try to log in my Github account, I get a "net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE" error. I tried with Chrome, Firefox and Opera. In Firefox, if a clean the cache and offline data, it works for a while. Then I can log in, but I still can't create a Github repository, even if I clear the cache again. My friend, in the same network, with Windows, can do whatever he wants on Github's web site, but I can't. I tried many DNS servers, I tried not to set it (my friend doesn't), but it's still not working. My OS: Ubuntu x64 12.04 Ideas, please. And thanks. Also, I can clone any repo but I can't push. I had to change to https://codeplane.com/ due to this problem, but I want to understand why it happens. • Best linux distro for cuda development

  Can someone suggest the best linux distro for CUDA development. The reason why I'm asking is that I tried installing the latest cuda SDK in Fedora 12, and it was a real pain in the neck. It took me 8 hours to get the nouveau driver removed and the nvidia-driver installed. After that somehow the OS decides to act up and blow up the /var/log/message file to 9 GB and eat up all my remaining space, with strange errors. I don't even understand what happened further, but my Nvidia drives don't work anymore. Please don't flame me, I'm NOT a windows fanboy or anything. I've been using Linux since 2002, and actually like it. Its just my personal experience. Would be really helpful for positive suggestions. Fanboys, please stay aside. Thanks in advance.

  When I try to fetch my site as a googlebot in webmaster tools it return Unreachable robots.txt, after investigate I understood google bot can see my server: tcpdump | grep google it return that google can access my server with IP 66.249.81.172 or 66.249.75.111. but there is not any think in access log or error log or other apache logs. cat access_log | grep google or cat error_log | grep 66.249.81.172 Other bot (bing,...) can access apache but google cant. there is not any problem in my robots.txt or its permissions because as you know robots.txt is not necessary so I delete it but again webmaster tools returned Unreachable robots.txt not 404 not found! information about server: Server OS : CentOS 6 Web Server : Apache 2.x Firewall : IPTables is stoped SELinux is Disabled There is not any think else for security on my server. how can I investigate the problem and is there any other command that can help me to find the problem.

• WPA2 authentication fails using USB network devices (Linksys and Rosewill)

  Decided to reduce the clutter in the house and replace a wired connection with a wireless one on my wife's system using USB network device Rosewill RNX-X1. I can see and connect to unprotected network, but WPA2 authentication repeatedly fails. Tried the same with a Linksys USB network adapter. Both failed to authenticate. Worth noting that I recently switched from Comcast to CenturyLink and so switched routers. The system connected successfully to previous router (Linksys EA4500) using WPA2. Would think it is the router (Actiontec C1000A) but all other devices (TV, iPad, Windows, Blackberry, and Squeezebox) connect ok.   Hi I hope someone can help me... I accidentally renamed my own user name on my mac running OS X 10.4.11 and tried renaming back to what it was but now I have two accounts (the one I want to use which has all my preferences, applications, mail boxes, etc etc) is it possible to copy my settings from my original into this new user name? When I open my computer it defaults to this new account but everything is setting up from new and I just need to get access to all my work documents, mail settings etc. If there is anyone who could help out, I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance.
