• Windows 2003 shutdown instead of reboot

  Hi all, I've got a very strange problem. On the net I can only find problems with Server 2003 pc's, that reboot instead of shutting down, but in my case... (go figure) it does the opposite. When I choose to reboot, the system shutdown. Yes I am sure I used the reboot button. It happens via start == reboot and it happens when clicking on the reboot button when the update's have been installed. Nothing changed to the system's hardware. Only update's have been installed on the system. I did notice something odd in the logs when rebooting: Description: Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of "C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE" KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924390 They talk about a removable drive, but in my case, it's explorer.exe :s it appears 4 times. OS: Windows Server 2003 R2. Services: AD, DNS, DHCP, WSUS. Thanks in advance! Greetings from Belgium Shane

• Error setting up Data Protection Manager 2010 Agents / Network "Unauthenticated" in network settings

  I'm not sure if the two are connected but i suspect they are. Basically I'm tring to setup Data Protection Manager 2010 on a fresh install of Server 2008 R2 in a SBS 2003 domain. Everything went fine until trying to install agents across the network. Upon clicking add, i get the following error message: Unable to connect to the Active Directory Domain Services Database. Make sure that the DPM server is a member of a domain and that the controller is running. Also verify that there is network connectivity between the DPM server and the domain controller. ID: 7 As usual (worryingly) the MSDN support for 2010 products is nearly non existant, clicking the error ID simply gives a page not found error. So after 2 days of Googling and trying various fixes (DNS settings, adding permissions to GPO objects, rejoining the domain and many more) I thought I'd ask here in the hope that someone out there may have had this issue before. Any help greatly appreciated!

  Earlier this month I was involved in organizing the Monument Family History Day. It was certainly a complex event, with dozens of presenters, guides and 100s of visitors. So with that experience of a complex event under my belt I decided to refresh my acquaintance with Oracle Event Processing (CEP). CEP has a developer side based on Eclipse and a runtime environment. Server install The server install is very straightforward (documentation). It is recommended to use the JRockit JDK with CEP so the steps to set up a working CEP server environment are: Download required software JRockit - I used Oracle “JRockit 6 - R28.2.5” which includes “JRockit Mission Control 4.1” and “JRockit Real Time 4.1”. Oracle Event Processor - I used “Complex Event Processing Release 11gR1 (11.1.1.6.0)” Install JRockit Run the JRockit installer, the download is an executable binary that just needs to be marked as executable. Install CEP Unzip the downloaded file Run the CEP installer, the unzipped file is an executable binary that may need to be marked as executable. Choose a custom install and add the examples if needed. It is not recommended to add the examples to a production environment but they can be helpful in development. Developer Install The developer install requires several steps (documentation). • Moving from Silverlight 4 Beta to RC - Part 2

  In my previous post I talked about updating my development environment from Silverlight 4 Beta to Silverlight 4 RC (release candidate). After updating, I opened the solution for my Task-It project and found that several things were broken. I would've been surprised if it just worked as is! What disappointed me is that after spending a decent amount of time searching the web, I could not find information telling me what I needed to update/change...and wouldn't it be nice if there was a wizard to update it for you? What changed? I wish I had made notes along the line of each of the things I found, but here are a few that I can recall: In the Web project, the following dll's no longer exist: System.Web.DomainServices.dll System.Web.DomainServices.LinqToSql.dll (if you are using the Entity Framework I believe that one is System.Web.DomainServices.EntityFramework.dll) System.Web.Ria.dll In the Silverlight project: System.Windows.Ria.dll I'm not positive which new assemblies need to be referenced for your project, but I'm going to list the ones I think you need. One way to verify is to create a new Silverlight application with support for WCF RIA Services and see which dlls are included. In the Web project: System.Data.Entity.dll System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.EntityFramework.dll (I've moved from LinqToSql to EntityFramework, so I'm not sure which one the LinqToSql stuff comes from) System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Hosting.dll System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Server.dll In the Silverlight project: System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.dll System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.Web.dll System.ServiceModel.Web.Extensions.dll Where are these dll's? • Instant messanger capable of offline messaging & tolerant of network interruptions

  I am looking for an instant messaging solution to facilitate communications between recovery vehicles in remote rural areas. All the vehicles have internet connections, but they are intermittent depending on location. Ideally we'd like something that has the following features: Offline messaging: messages sent to clients who are offline will be delivered when they next come online, regardless of whether the sender is still online or not. Lightweight: CPU cycles are limited on the machines in these vehicles. A bloated solution will be an issue. Client platform is primarily win32, but support for osx/linux/mobile devices would be a bonus. Non-chatty: Bandwidth is a precious commodity for us, so services which use a minimal amount are ideal. Fault tolerant: We see plenty of packetloss and high latency, so whatever we use needs to be able to function in trying network conditions. I'm not fussed if we use a hosted platform like gtalk/skype/msn/icq/whatever, and likewise I can run a server if need be. Suggestions would be appreciated!

• SQL Server: One 12-drive RAID-10 array or 2 arrays of 8-drives and 4-drives

  Setting up a box for SQL Server 2008, which would give the best performance (heavy OLTP)? The more drives in a RAID-10 array the better performance, but will losing 4 drives to dedicate them to the transaction logs give us more performance. 12-drives in RAID-10 plus one hot spare. OR 8-drives in RAID-10 for database and 4-drives RAID-10 for transaction logs plus 2 hot spares (one for each array). We have 14-drive slots to work with and it's an older PowerVault that doesn't support global hot spares.

• backing up a virtual machine

  I inquired with the support of justcloud.com telling them that I have a vmware vm that I was wondering if it could be backed up while in use. I can back up the vm once it is shut down but I was wondering if their "shadow copy" would back it up while running. This was their response: Thank you for your email. I am really very sorry but virtual machines can't be backed up for a simple reason that they are virtual, they have virtual memory, not physical memory. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with. Am I wrong in thinking that a vm can be backed up while in use? Does this response even make sense? I need a cheap alternative to backing up the vm off the server in case it goes down. • weird resolving of path to command

  I have the terminal editor 'nano' installed in two places on my mac /usr/bin/nano /opt/local/bin/nano The installations are of different versions. the one in /usr does not support my configuration in ~/.nanorc and the one in /opt does. when i open a file with the command 'nano file', errors are displayed, indicating that the one in /usr was used, however, if i run 'which nano'; the one in /opt shows up. Isn't 'which' meant to search the path for the default? And why wouldn't a call to 'nano' resolve to the same path? EDIT: I made a work-around by adding the following line to ~/.profile alias nano='/opt/local/bin/nano'

  Attempting to configure some software on our server to send email via SMTP. When testing it, get this SMTP Error: SMTP Error: The following recipients failed [address]" Based on my research and a reply from the software's support team this error usually occurs because relaying is not allowed on the SMTP server from the IP address of the web server. The solution is to "Go to the configuration of your SMTP server and turn relaying on for your IP address" My question is -- how do I do this? Is this done from WHM? cPanel?

• Toshiba Satellite error 10053A0000 when re installing windows xp home on an existing windows 7

  I had installed windows 7 for testing. Now i want to re-install windows xp home original. I am using the toshiba installation(recovery) disk. The installation process asked a few questions. I selected the option to retain other partitions and to delete only c drive. In the next step i got this error. http://web1.toshiba.ca/support//techsupport/tsbs/all/-tsb001404.htm So, what should i do to retain my files in d drive and only allow the installation to delete c drive?

• Development environment to manage multiple Oracle databases

  I am in an enterprise environment where we have applications that need to run against multiple Oracle databases. Developers may need to manage multiple vintages of these databases to support different test data or diagnose bugs against different versions of the code. Right now, we have a limited set of test environments set up on "real" Oracle servers within the data center. We juggle these among development and QA groups and there is a lot of conflicts and inefficiencies that arise because of it. I am taking a look at Oracle Express Edition which would allow me to spin up a local Oracle database. This is similar to the workflow I most often see with SQL Server. Devs work on their location machine until they are ready to integration and then they push their DB changes to integration / QA environments. However, from what I read it seems that Oracle XE only supports one database instance at a time. So if I have an application that utilizes two different databases, I can't have both of them running on my local machine. Is that correct? Does Oracle Standard or Personal editions get around this limitation? If I had one of those installed locally, how difficult would it be to get multiple databases working on the same development machine? How do dev shops handle developing against Oracle where they need to be using several different Oracle instances for their applications?

• Bay Area JUG Roundup 2010 - A Good Time for All

  The first Bay Area JUG Roundup (#roundup10) convened at Oracle HQ on Wednesday evening, in the palatial surroundings of the Oracle Conference Center. (Yes, there will be more!) A couple hundred people were there, I'd say. More came out of this meetup than a bunch of new contacts and some mild indigestion (or even a mild hangover): - We (meaning, Oracle) announced the opening of the eight annual Duke's Choice Awards. As described on the Web page, "The awards celebrate extreme innovation in the world of Java technology and are granted to the best and most innovative projects using the Java platform." Entries will be accepted through July 1, with winners announced at JavaOne 2010. - Even more exciting, we offered a sneak preview of the Java Road Trip, a cross-country, 20-stop bus tour this Summer involving one rock-star bus, one full-time blogger/videographer, a whole bunch of Java demos and speakers, and lots of beer and prizes. Stay tuned for more info about this. - Sonya Barry, Java.net community manager, announced the beta.java.net project - which will be the end result of the java.net migration to a Kenai back-end and retooled social/community layer (already in progress). Sonya also announced that Maven support for Java.net projects is imminent, with just a contract to be signed in the next couple of weeks. Finally, we were all treated to a typically hilarious Java Posse appearance. Arun Gupta has posted photos as well as meetup slideware at his blog. • Best/Preferred software for photography.

  I am just getting into photography as a hobby, and am looking for some good tools for image uploading/browsing/editing. I am currently using the Canon EOS utility that came with the camera for uploading, Picasa for browsing, and GIMP for editing. Pros: The files are stored using the standard file system (no proprietary library like iPhoto) Great photo editing possibilities Free (except the Canon Utility, but that was bundled) Cons: Multiple programs Hard to view the Exif Data (I like the way that iPhoto displays the data) Over-simplified editing tools in Picasa What other tools should I look into? Also, I occasionally shoot in RAW, and would prefer Mac support (better monitor), but I also have windows and linux machines.

• Can't play blu ray on sony vaio fz

  Hi. I have a Sony Vaio FZ (VGN-FZ31M) with a blu ray drive. I have just recently purchased the 2001 Space Odissey in blu ray but haven't been able to play on my laptop. When I try to play it with WMP i get this: "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD. The disc was created in a manner that the Player does not support." and this with VLC: "VLC cannot open MRL. Check log for details." I have once formatted the pc and done a clean install without the sony vaio recovery cd. Is it possible that it is necessary a specific blu ray driver that I have not installed? Thanks.

• Applescript cannot find sed during application install

  I am attempting to install an application, but the installer fails with the following error message: sh: sed: command not found and there is an Edit and OK button in the dialog, so I click the Edit button which launches the AppleScript Editor to show me the script that is executing. Running it from within the Editor doesn't work either. The first line of the script with sed is set currdir_modified to do shell script ("echo " & currdir & " | sed 's/ /\\ /g'") I went to the terminal to make sure sed was available, and it is, in /usr/bin. This sounds like a path problem, but I am not sure where to go from here. What can I do to further troubleshoot or solution this issue? I have successfully installed this app on another mac running the same OS X version, so it is specific to my mac and the application's support is not providing any more help because it is my mac's problem, not theirs.

• Are there any statistics on the number of networks using Ethernet Jumbo frames?

  I am often told by Sales Engineers and Product managers that a Layer 2 Ethernet service is not fit for purpose if the maximum supported frame size is in the 1518-1522 range (enough to support standard Ethernet frames or VLAN tagged frames). Or in other words: an MTU of 1500 is not enough (see this blog post for my definition of MTU and a short rant on how the term is often misused) I am never able to get any details from them on: a) What proportion of customers (Enterprise / SMB) require Jumbo frames b) What are typical expectations on frame size for Jumbos on WAN links? 1600, 2000, 9k, etc... I know that in Telco and Data Centre environments Jumbos are pretty common, but I am after some insight as to how common this is within Enterprise and SMB networks.
