• Not indent the first paragraph of a LaTeX document

  In the standard LaTeX article class (and probably others as well), paragraph indentation follows standard American publishing norms of not indenting the first paragraph after a section{} or subsection{}. I've redefined \maketitle in a LaTeX document and put the actual title left-aligned as the last line, fairly close to the actual text (kind of like this) Author Date Title Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum. Section title Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Since the title is left-aligned and so close to the text, I'd like the first paragraph of the document to not be indented, just like with the headings ...   I've started working on a simple XML pull-parser, and as I've just defuzzed my mind on what's correct syntax in XML with regards to certain characters/sequences, ignorable whitespace and such (thank you, http://www.w3schools.com/xml/xml_elements.asp), I realized that I still don't know squat about what can be sketched up as the following case (which Validome finds well-formed very much; note that I only want to use xml files for data storage, no entities, DTD or Schemas needed): <bookstore> <book id="1"> <author>Kurt Vonnegut Jr.</author> <title>Slapstick</title> </book> We drop a pie here. <book id="2">Who cares anyway? <author>Stephen King</author> <title>The Green Mile</title> </book> And another one here. <book id="3"> <author>Next one</author> <title>This time with its own title</title> </book> </bookstore> "We drop a pie here." and "And another one here." are values of the 'bookstore' element. "Who cares anyway?" is a value related to the second 'book' element. How are these processed, if at all? Will "We drop a pie here." and "Another one here." be concatenated to form one value for the 'bookstore' element, or are they treated separately, stored somewhere, affecting the outcome of the parsing of the element they belong to, or...?

• Handling data update/freshness issue in web-app in general (or GWT specifically)

  In general, how do you guys handle user update/data freshness interaction with the user (UI issue) in web-apps? For example: Multi-users web-app (like project management) Login to a "virtual" space People can update project names, etc How to handle a situation such that: user-A and user-B load a project with title "Project StackOverflow" user-B updates the title to "Project StackExchange" user-A updates the title after user-B update operation to "Project Basecamp" The question I'm asking is from the user perspective (UI) and not about transactional operation. What do most people do in this situation? What would you do after user-B updates the title in user-A screen/view? What happened when user-A tries to update the title after user-B finished his/her update operation? do you inform user-A that the title has changed and he/she has to reload the page? do you go ahead and change the title and let user-B has old data? Do you do some sort of application-level "locking" mechanism? (if someone is updating, nobody else can?) Or fix the application workflow? (who has the access to be able to change things, etc). What would be the simplest solution, but at the same time not annoy the user with more dialog/warning messages. I've encountered this particular problem frequently in a GWT app specifically where domain models are being passed around and refreshing the whole app/client-side isn't the optimal solution in my mind (since it means the whole "loading"/initialization phase must be executed again in this specific environment). Maybe the answer is to stay away from GWT? :) Love to hear options, solutions, and advises from you guys. Thanks

  I only have the .wsdl and I want to put the data that the web services return in the RSS. And in a web page of SAP, I can only upload RSS, so I need put the information of the web services in the RSS For example, I put the information manually(name and total value) in the fields <title> and <descripcion>, these data are extracted from the web services. But sometimes I don´t know how much information brings the web service.   Hi, I have a problem I don't know how to get it to work the best way. I need to loop trough an array like the one below. I need to check if the [country] index is equal to a Spanish speaking country (lot of countries) and then get those [title] indexes of the correspondent country and check for duplicates. • Problems updating a textBox ASP.NET

  Hello, I'm starting in asp.net and am having some problems that I do not understand. The problem is this, I am building a site for news. Every news has a title and body. I have a page where I can insert news, this page uses a textbox for each of the fields (title and body), after clicking the submit button everything goes ok and saves the values in the database. And o have another page where I can read the news, I use labels for each of the camps, these labels are defined in the Page_Load. Now I'm having problems on the page where I can edit the news. I am loading two textboxes (title and body) in the Page_Load, so far so good, but then when I change the text and I click the submit button, it ignores the changes that I made in the text and saves the text loaded in Page_Load. This code doesn't show any database connection but you can understand what i'm talking about. protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { textboxTitle.Text = "This is the title of the news"; textboxBody.Text = "This is the body of the news "; } I load the page, make the changes in the text , and then click submit. protected void btnSubmit_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { String title = textboxTitle.Text; String body = textboxBody.Text; Response.Write("Title: " + title + " || "); Response.Write("Body: " + body ); } Nothing happens, the text in the textboxes is always the one I loaded in the page_load, how do I update the Text in the textboxes?

• Pass a variable from the source file to an included file in PHP

  For my website I want to store the general format of the site in a single PHP file in a single location, and each of the different pages content in the local location of the page. I then want to pass the title and content address to the included file via a variable. However I can't get the included format file to read the variables storing the title and content data. AKA, the called file for the individual page would be: <?php $title = 'Some Title'; $source_file = 'content.php'; readfile('http:...../format.php'); ?> The format file would be: <html> ... <title> <?php echo $title; ?> </title> ... <?php include($source_file); ?> ... I recall reading somewhere I need to include something to get the variables at the start of the format file, however I can't remember what it is or find where I found that information.

  I have 5 Tables in MS Access as Logs [Title, ID, Date, Author] Tape [Title, ID, Date, Author] Maps [Title, ID, Date, Author] VCDs [Title, ID, Date, Author] Book [Title, ID, Date, Author] I tried my level best through this code SELECT Logs.[Author], Tape.[Author], Maps.[Author], VCDs.[Author], Book.[Author] FROM Logs , Tape , Maps , VCDs, Book WHERE ((([Author] & " " & [Author] & " " & [Author] & " " & [Author]& " " & [Author]) Like "*" & [Type the Title or Any Part of the Title and Press Ok] & "*")); I want to select all of these fields in a single query. Suppose there is Adam as author of works in all tables. So when i put Adam in search box it should result from all tables. I know this can be done by having single table or renaming fields names but that's not required. Please help.

I looked around and checked out if it wasn't the z-index bug mentioned here, that seems to have caused some trouble to many people.   Hi! I'm trying to create a small search for my site. I've tried using full-text index search, but I could never get it to work. This works decently well, but I'm just wondering how efficient would it be? This would only be for a small blog, too. Either way I'm just wondering if this could be made any more efficient.

  I have a list of hashes, as such: incoming_links = [ {:title => 'blah1', :url => "http://blah.com/post/1"}, {:title => 'blah2', :url => "http://blah.com/post/2"}, {:title => 'blah3', :url => "http://blah.com/post/3"}] And an ActiveRecord model which has fields in the database with some matching rows, say: Link.all => [<Link#2 @title='blah2' @url='...post/2'>, <Link#3 @title='blah3' @url='...post/3'>, <Link#4 @title='blah4' @url='...post/4'>] I'd like to do set operations on Link.all with incoming_links so that I can figure out that <Link#4 ...> is not in the set of incoming_links, and {:title => 'blah1', :url =>'http://blah.com/post/1'} is not in the Link.all set, like so: #pseudocode #incoming_links = as above links = Link.all expired_links = links - incoming_links missing_links = incoming_links - links expired_links.destroy missing_links.each{|link| Link.create(link)} One route I've tried: I'd rather not rewrite Array#- and such, and I'm okay with converting incoming_links to a set of unsaved Link objects; so I've tried overwriting hash eql? and so on in Link so that it ignored the id equality that AR::Base provides by default. But this is the only place this sort of equality should be considered in the application - in other places the Link#id default identity is required. Is there some way I could subclass Link and apply the hash, eql?, etc overwriting there? The other route I've tried is to pull out the attributes hash for each Link and doing a .slice('id',...etc) to prune the hashes down. But this requires writing seperate methods for keeping track of the Link objects while doing set operations on the hashes, or writing seperate Collection classes to wrap the incoming_links hash-list and Link-list which seems a bit overkill. What is the best way to design this interaction? Extra credit for cleanliness.

• jQuery: How do I insert an html string an arbitrary number of times (i.e. not with an each() function)?

  I just need to take a certain html query object and append it to an html element a lot of times. I have this: var box = $("<div class='box'>&nbsp</div>"); $("#firstbox").after(box); and it works fine, but it just adds one 'box' after the #firstbox element. I'd like to do something like this: var box = $("<div class='box'>&nbsp</div>"); $("#firstbox").after(box * 6000); so that it will insert 6000 copies of that 'box' html, but this is not working. This is I'm sure the easiest thing to do, but I can't seem to find how to multiply actions like this without using the each() function, which doesn't apply here because I don't have 6000 of anything on my page. • Bug with asp.net mvc2, collection and ValidationMessageFor ?

  I'm with a really weird bug with asp.net mvc2 (rtm) and ValidationMessageFor. The example below throws a System.Collections.Generic.KeyNotFoundException on Response.Write(Html.ValidationMessageFor(n = n[index].Name)); Any ideas why thats happening? I'm accessing the same dictionary twice before, but it only throws the error on ValidationMessageFor, any thoughts? • SharpZip escape filename

  I'm using SharpZipLib to create a zip file with an html page and images. If the html file has a / in the name, it creates a folder (which messes up the image paths). Example: If the html file should be named Web/Design.html the zip file will contain a Web folder with a Design.html file in it. I've tried escaping / by replacing / with // or \/ but nothing has worked so far.
