• PHP or RoR... Which is simpler?

  I'd like a server side scripting language for the web either php or ror: to do some dirty simple data fetching and eventually handing it off to my ajax app. I usually use php for this but I keep hearing the ror buzz word. I'm wondering for those who have used both, which is ultimately simpler to get something quick and dirty running? I'm a bit turned off to RoR as it seems to have many files (it's more of a framework), whereas php can potentially just be one file and that's it. But maybe I'm wrong, can you clue me in?

• Drupal 7: Documents as a node/block/field

  I'm working on my first Drupal site. I've progressed in learning the basics . I still have a lot to learn tho. Using FileViewer I can load a PDF saved in a field, for view content of various types. I haven't found something that does the same for Word Docs, Excel, PDF, etc. Does anyone know of something that works in Drupal 7 to load documents other than PDF like FileViewer does inside a browser? Or like Scribd does (Scribd is hosted. I am behind a firewall with limited access for users. So I don't want to use a Scribd like service.)

• Lexmark X7170 shows documents as printed when they haven't

  I made the move from Windows 7 to Ubuntu not dual booting because I have decided to quit gaming to spare more time for my studies. I just needed an OS for browsing the web and word processing etc. After I installed Ubuntu I installed the AMD GPU drivers, after which I clicked on the little printer icon, selected add printer and it found the drivers for the Lexmark 7000 series and I installed them. Now my problem is when I print something from Writer it processes it thinks its completed it, when in fact it hasn't printed anything. I tried printing a test page but it was stuck on processing for 5 minutes. I have restarted my computer and turned the printer on and off. I'm running 64bit if that changes anything.

• Why do my WPF UIElements NOT have OnPreview events?

  I'm building a custom Silverlight UserControl which needs to listen to events using Preview/Tunneling, but for some reason the compiler is telling me they are not recognized or accessible. For example, I can add an event handler to MouseLeftButtonDown, but not PreviewMouseLeftButtonDown. This doesn't make sense because according to Microsoft (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.uielement_members(v=VS.100).aspx) all UIElements should have Preview events attached. Any ideas as to why this is happening? I'm using Visual Studio 2010 Trial, Blend 4 RC and .Net 4, if that makes a difference.

• Is there a reason why a base class decorated with XmlInclude would still throw a type unknown exception when serialized?

  I will simplify the code to save space but what is presented does illustrate the core problem. I have a class which has a property that is a base type. There exist 3 dervived classes which could be assigned to that property. If I assign any of the derived classes to the container then the XmlSerializer throws dreaded "The type xxx was not expected. Use the XmlInclude or SoapInclude attribute to specify types that are not known statically." exception when attempting to seralize the container. However my base class is already decorated with that attribute so I figure there must be an additional "hidden" requirement. The really odd part is that the default WCF serializer has no issues with this class hierarchy. • How to Hashtag (Without Being #Annoying)

  The right tool in the wrong hands can be a dangerous thing. Giving a chimpanzee a chain saw would not be a pretty picture. And putting Twitter hashtags in the hands of social marketers who were never really sure how to use them can be equally unattractive. Boiled down, hashtags are for search and organization of tweets. A notch up from that, they can also be used as part of a marketing strategy. In terms of search, if you’re in the organic apple business, you want anyone who searches “organic” on Twitter to see your posts about your apples. It’s keyword tactics not unlike web site keyword search tactics. So get a clear idea of what keywords are relevant for your tweet. It’s reasonable to include #organic in your tweet. Is it fatal if you don’t hashtag the word? It depends on the person searching. If they search “organic,” your tweet’s going to come up even if you didn’t put the hashtag in front of it. If the searcher enters “#organic,” your tweet needs the hashtag. Err on the side of caution and hashtag it so it comes up no matter how the searcher enters it. You’ll also want to hashtag it for the second big reason people hashtag, organization. You can follow a hashtag. So can the rest of the Twitterverse. If you’re that into organic munchies, you can set up a stream populated only with tweets hashtagged #organic. If you’ve established a hashtag for your brand, like #nobugsprayapples, you (and everyone else) can watch what people are tweeting about your company. So what kind of hashtags should you include? They should be directly related to the core message of your tweet. Ancillary or very loosely-related hashtags = annoying. Hashtagging your brand makes sense. Hashtagging your core area of interest makes sense. Creating a specific event or campaign hashtag you want others to include and spread makes sense (the burden is on you to promote it and get it going). Hashtagging nearly every word in the tweet is highly annoying. Far and away, the majority of hashtagged words in such tweets have no relevance, are not terms that would be searched, and are not terms needed for categorization. It looks desperate and spammy. Two is fine. One is better. And it is possible to tweet with --gasp-- no hashtags! Make your hashtags as short as you can. In fact, if your brand’s name really is #nobugsprayapples, you’re burning up valuable, limited characters and risking the inability of others to retweet with added comments. Also try to narrow your topic hashtag down. You’ll find a lot of relevant users with #organic, but a lot of totally uninterested users with #food. Just as you can join online forums and gain credibility and a reputation by contributing regularly to that forum, you can follow hashtagged topics and gain the same kind of credibility in your area of expertise. Don’t just parachute in for the occasional marketing message. And if you’re constantly retweeting one particular person, stop it. It’s kissing up and it’s obvious. Which brings us to the king of hashtag annoyances, “hashjacking.” This is when you see what terms are hot and include them in your marketing tweet as a hashtag, even though it’s unrelated to your content. Justify it all you want, but #justinbieber has nothing to do with your organic apples. Equally annoying, piggybacking on a popular event’s hashtag to tweet something not connected to the event. You’re only fostering ill will and mistrust toward your account from the people you’ve tricked into seeing your tweet. Lastly, don’t @ mention people just to make sure they see your tweet. If the tweet’s not for them or about them, it’s spammy. What I haven’t covered is use of the hashtag for comedy’s sake. You’ll see this a lot and is a matter of personal taste. No one will search these hashtagged terms or need to categorize then, they’re just there for self-expression and laughs.   am having issues with prerequisites while trying to publish my windows .net 3.5 application using clickonce. I am wanting my application to work offline as well as online, so I want to include the prerequisites in the installation and not make client download them via the internet. My prerequisites are: .Net Framework Client Profile SQL Compact 3.5 I have downloaded the .Net Framework Client Profile Offline Installer. Installed it and put the DotNetFx35Client.exe in this location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bootstrapper\Packages\DotNetFx35Client Under the Project - Publish Tab I have checked the "Download prerequisites from the following location" and entered \MachineName\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bootstrapper\Packages\DotNetFx35Client Following http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1046370?tab=oldest#tab-top I am however still the error: The install location for prerequisites has not been set to 'component vendo's website' file Dotnetfx35client\Dotnetfx35clientSteup.exe' in item .net framework client profile can not be located on disk.

  I have a WiX installer that I would like to check for .Net 3.5, and install it if it does not exist. I have the following lines in my wixproj file: <BootstrapperFile Include="Microsoft.Net.Framework.3.5"> <ProductName>.NET Framework 3.5</ProductName> </BootstrapperFile> <BootstrapperFile Include="Microsoft.Windows.Installer.3.1"> <ProductName>WIndows Installer 3.1</ProductName> </BootstrapperFile> When I create the installer, a DotNetFX35 folder is created, and in it are 4 different versions of .Net (including 3.5), and an installer file. I have two questions: How do I have it only bring in version 3.5 (so that the user doesn't have to install 100+ MB of files)? How do I tell WiX to package these files up into the MSI file, so that the user only has to download 1 file?

• 12.04 - Disable the HUD trigger key [ALT] in Emacs & Terminal

  An answer on How to disable HUD in Unity 2D? points to https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-2d/+bug/947613 where the ALT key will be made reconfigurable. Apart from emacs usage, I'm reasonably happy with using the ALT key to bring up the HUD. While using emacs though, the ALT key is tapped frequently to invoke commands. Should emacs be special cased with respect to the ALT key? I'm wondering what the situation is with games; surely lots of games repurpose the ALT key for their own use, e.g. to fire a weapon? If so, could the same be applied to Emacs, i.e. prevent the ALT key in emacs from triggering the HUD. Edit: just realized how extensively I use the ALT key in the terminal: a quick tap of ALT+B to move back a word loses focus of the terminal and brings up the HUD. Aghch

  Developing in .NET 3.5. Recently my well-worn link to the .NET Framework 3.5 Class Library documentation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229335.aspx) started taking me to the .NET 4.0 docs. This is a bit of a nuisance, because I'm not interested in .NET 4.0 (yet)--the project I'm working on is in 3.5. Previous versions of the .NET Class Library docs provided links to older versions; these don't appear to be present any more in 4.0 docs. And I can't seem to locate the 3.5 docs anywhere on MSDN. Does anyone know where these are located. Or (better) where I can download a static copy of the Class Library docs (something conveniently available with Java API javadocs) that Microsoft can't hide?   So, there's this idea, which you already know: Define the layout of your UI by creating a tree of panels. The leaf nodes on the tree are what we used to call 'controls' way back in the day-- the things that the user interacts with, radio buttons and listboxes and such. The internal nodes are mostly concerned with layout; this kind of panel stacks its child panels vertically, that kind puts its children into a grid, etc. It's COMMON. Most of the UI-generating systems I've seen in the past twenty years are implementations of this, and the ones that aren't borrow from it. What's the word for this idea?

  Okay, here's what I want to do - when the player is at the main menu, I want them to be able to type in cheat codes. That's the only place I want it to work. I don't want to give them a text box to type into. Rather, I want them to simply type in a word (let's say "cheat", just for simplicity sake) that activates the cheat code. • What is the history of why bytes are eight bits?

  What where the historical forces at work, the tradeoffs to make, in deciding to use groups of eight bits as the fundamental unit ? There were machines, once upon a time, using other word sizes, but today for non-eight-bitness you must look to museum pieces, specialized chips for embedded applications, and DSPs. How did the byte evolve out of the chaos and creativity of the early days of computer design? I can imagine that fewer bits would be ineffective for handling enough data to make computing feasible, while too many would have lead to expensive hardware. Were other influences in play? Why did these forces balance out to eight bits? (BTW, if I could time travel, I'd go back to when the "byte" was declared to be 8 bits, and convince everyone to make it 12 bits, bribing them with some early 21st Century trinkets.)

  I lucked out and managed to buy a two word .com EMD for the most important key-phrase for our b2b SaaS startup. Shutting down our branded domain isn't an option, we've already got too much invested in that brand (not in terms of SEO but in terms of other marketing efforts). The brand domain at present hasn't really been optimised for this key-phrase and we haven't invested any effort in SEO to date on that domain, but now we have some resources and want to make a big push for that key-phrase. So what is the best strategy for an EMD when you want already have a branded domain that you don't want to close or have penalised in some way?

• LAN or workgroup with Ubuntu server and windows clients

  I have 35 windows7 standalone computers right now and planning to setup a LAN/workgroup using ubuntu as a server if its a LAN. Purpose for network.. Files from client computers to be accessed by me and vice versa through a shared folder on the server. Files only include word documents and very small project files. The network wont have Internet at the moment. What I would like to know.. How would i configure the ubuntu server to recognize the clients and will the clients be able to view the shared folders through their windows machines simultaneously? Would appreciate feedback.
