php mail() function painfully slow on local development machine

Background: If you have set up a local apache server for development purposes you may have run into the problem where sendmail takes a long time (at least one minute) to send emails. This is extremely frustrating if you are trying to debug a problem with an email you have generated. There are several forum posts on the internet that discuss this problem. However, none of theme described what to do in enough detail for my limited knowledge. Here are the steps that worked for me: 1) find your hostname (in case you've forgotten it) using this command: :~$ cat /hosts/hostname myhostname 2) edit the file /etc/hosts and make sure the first line is the following: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost myhostname 3) edit the sendmail configuration file ( /etc/mail/sendmail.cf in Ubuntu) and Uncomment the line #O HostsFile=/etc/hosts 4) Restart the computer. The computer should boot up much faster now and the mail() function should return almost immediately. HOWEVER, the emails won't actually be sent unless you follow step 5. 5) You must new use the sendmail '-f' option whenever using the mail function. For example: mail('[email protected]', 'the subject', 'the message', null, '[email protected]'); My question for my fellow serverfaulters is: What further changes can be made so that I don't have to use the sendmail -f option? Although it's not very hard to add the -f option, it is a problem when your CMS (such as Drupal) does not use the -f option when sending mail. You would need to hack a core module to add this option.

Image Management System with Different Levels of Access

I work in the graphics department for a real estate brokerage, and we deal with a lot of photos. Agents take the photos, upload them to me, I touch up and standardize the photos, then I add them to an in-house server for future use by the graphics dept. I'd like to make the "sanitized" photo files available to the agents to use when they want, but I don't want the agents poking around the graphics department's files (things get misplaced, renamed and messed up in a hurry). What would be perfect is if we could create a read-only "mirror" (correct term?) of that server that could be accessed by the agents as needed, but which wouldn't feed back into our "sanitized" file system. Edit: I'm looking for an automatic solution... manually posting the files to two separate locations seems like an inelegant solution when working digitally. Edit: I'm trying to avoid any access barriers to the public (dirty) file system (however it's finally implemented). There are 40-50 real estate agents who need to access these files, half of whom can't reliably download an email attachment.

New i7 is slower than old Core 2 Duo? Why? (BIOS programming)

I've always wondered why the companies who make BIOS' either have terrible engineering psychologists or none at all. But without wasting your time further with random speculative questions, my real question is as follows: Why does my new computer run slower than my old computer? Old Computer: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 3.0 Ghz (stock) 4GB OCZ DDR2 800 RAM Wolfdale E8400 mb nVidia GeForce 8600 GT New Computer: Intel Core i7 920 @ ~3.2 Ghz 6 GB OCZ DDR3 1066 RAM EVGA x58 SLI LE motherboard nVidia GeForce GTX 275 Vista x64 Home Premium on both. "Run slower" is defined as: - poorer FPS performance in the same games, applications - takes longer to start up - general desktop usage (checking email, opening up files, running exe's) is noticeably slower At first I thought I must've not set something up in the BIOS or something. But I have no idea how to set anything in the bios except for "Dummy O.C.", which brought me to ~3.2 Ghz. But beyond that I have no idea. I've been reading stuff about "ram timing" and voltages and the like but I really have no idea about that stuff. I'm a psychologist who has a basic understanding in building his own computers, not a computer scientist. Can someone give me some wisdom that might guide me to the reason my new computer is worse than my older one? I'm sorry if this is a bad question, or not appropriate to SO. I'm just pretty frustrated now and you all have helped me in the past so I figured I'd give it a shot. Thanks for your time.

Virtual machine shows no network adapter

I had a an old Lotus/Domino server (R5), I just virtualized. It ran Windows 2000 server. I had to use Vmware Converter v3.x to create the vm because it was the only one I could find that could actually do a Win2k machine that had no service packs. It was just put out to pasture a couple months ago, so it isn't being used except to store the old email for archiving. It took a bit of work to get it onto the Win2008R2 servers hyper-v but I got it there. Problem now, is that the network adapter didn't show up. I could not install the guest additions because it needed sp4 + on win2k... so I installed sp4 onto the vm guest. Everything seems fine except the network adapter still isn;t showing up in device manager. NOthing. Now this server had an external ip, and I did not want it to be put onto the internal virtual network. I am going to use a dedicated adapter on the host (hyper-v server) if that matters... but this shouldn't matter if the the guests network adapter doesn't show at all. Thoughts?

Increasing link speed on OpenVPN (bandwidth)

I have bought a tunnel service by using OpenVPN. For a year I've had 10 Mbps max upload/download speed but now I've bought an additional 20 Mbps making the available total bandwidth 30 Mbps for me. On their homepage there are some controls available for me, for example to restart the tunnel. I've done that. It also says that the speed has indeed been upgraded to 30 Mbps on their page. I also got an email that said they have upgraded the speed. However after I reboot my machine, and OpenVPN has started up and is running as usual, when I look at the Windows Task Manager (opens when pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC) in the "Networking" tab I still have a link speed of only 10 Mbps. Two adapters are listed: Local Area Connection 4 (10 Mbps) and Local Area Connection 5 (100 Mbps). LAC5 is my "real" adapter, I have a 100 Mbps Internet connection if I don't use a tunnel. LAC3 is the virtual adapter used by OpenVPN. The problem is that it is still showing 10 Mbps even though I have upgraded to 30 Mbps. How can I fix this?

What is the best time to set the IP address for a server headed to a server colocation facility?

What is the best time to set the IP address for a server? I have a server that I am going to install the OS on and then I am going to send it to a server colocation facility. The server is going to have Internet facing services (www, email, etc.) I can set up a "fake" IP address during install (by fake I mean private as in RFC 1918) and change the "fake" IPs to the real IPs once I set up the colocation service. The other option is to set up the colocation service...wait for them to give me the "real" IPs and use them during the OS install. The ramification are that...if I use "fake" IPs during install...I will have to wait before I set up things like SSL certs. If I wait for IPs from the colocation provider...then I can set up SSL certs that use the "correct" (as in "real") IP addresses...no changes to the certs until they expire. Do the "gotchas" of changing an IP address on a server outweigh the benefits of a quick install? The other danger with using "fake" IPs is that I could make a mistake when I go through the various files to change the IP address to the "live" IP address. Server OS: CentOS 6.2 or CentOS 6.3, 64 bit. Apps: Apache 2.4.X httpd, MySQL 5.X (will eventually use replication)

Softfail / Failure Notice on SMTP

Hey, i'm searching for an answer for about 24 hours now and I still can't find any really useful help... The problem appears as the following: I'm running a debian server with Plesk 9.5.3 and qmail. Since a few weeks I'm not able to send mails to some particular servers (like web.de, aol.com). Hence I get failure notices like "Sorry, I wasn't able to establish an SMTP connection." But when I try to send mails to gmail.com - it works! Gmail only reports a softfail in the mail header like so: Received: from h1600XXX.?none? (DOMAIN2.TLD [XX.XXX.XX.XX]) Received-SPF: softfail (google.com: best guess record for domain of transitioning [email protected] does not designate 85.XXX.XX.XX as permitted sender) client-ip=85.XXX.XX.XX This sounds like a dns problem for me, but I can't get an answer for that... What makes me wondering is: h1600XXX is correct, but it should look like h1600XXX.stratoserver.net, not ?none? DOMAIN2.TLD (first line) is different from DOMAIN1 (second line). Both are hosted on this machine, but is this correct? DOMAIN1 is the one I send this mail from. Hopefully someone could help me! If you need more specific information, let me know. Map Subdomains to Folders Owned/Run by Other Apache/PHP/Cpanel Users

I run a small service for Norwegian customers where they get automatically installed and configured Wordpress blogs on their own domains ready immediately after payment is finished. It's quite similar to Page.ly and WPEngine, just aimed at Norwegian customers with Norwegian Wordpress, support, billing etc. The backend is WHM/CPanel (Apache, PHP, mySQL), with a script running immediately after payment that installs and configures Wordpress and sends the customer an email with their username and password. Newly registered domains takes some time to propagate though, so for a day or two my customers unfortunately have to use a temporary URL before I can switch them over to their own domains. Right now my system uses mod_userdir ("serverIP/~cpanelusername"). However, it's not an optimal solution. It looks unprofessional, is confusing, and is quite problematic for both my customers and me. I'd rather prefer the temporary URL for their blogs to be "theirdomainwithoutextension.host.no", with "host.no" being a domain I own and served from the same server as the customer sites. I can easily modify the script to create the subdomains on my "host.no"-domain, but how can I seamlessly map the subdomains to folders owned/ran on/by different CPanel/Apache/PHP users?

What's common sense when it comes to minimising the risk of employees spreading critical information to rivalling companies? As of today, it's clear that not even the US government and military can be sure that their data stays safely within their doors. Thereby I understand that my question probably instead should be written as "What is common sense to make it harder for employees to spread business critical information?" If anyone would want to spread information, they will find a way. That's the way life work and always has. If we make the scenario a bit more realistic by narrowing our workforce by assuming we only have regular John Does onboard and not Linux-loving sysadmins , what should be good precautions to at least make it harder for the employees to send business-critical information to the competition? As far as I can tell, there's a few obvious solutions that clearly has both pros and cons: Block services such as Dropbox and similar, preventing anyone to send gigabytes of data through the wire. Ensure that only files below a set size can be sent as email (?) Setup VLANs between departments to make it harder for kleptomaniacs and curious people to snoop around. Plug all removable media units - CD/DVD, Floppy drives and USB Make sure that no configurations to hardware can be made (?) Monitor network traffic for non-linear events (how?) What is realistic to do in a real world? How does big companies handle this? Sure, we can take the former employer to court and sue, but by then the damage has already been caused... Thanks a lot

Ubuntu 9.10 won't reboot after replacing a failed drive

Hello Serverfault community. I hope someone can shed light on a peculiar problem I am having with an Ubuntu 9.10 server install. I am not a Linux expert but have the responsibility of fixing the box if something goes wrong. DOH! I have Ubuntu 9.10 server installed on on a desktop platform: Compaq Presario SR5027CL. There are two 1TB SATA drives configured in a RAID 1 array; I use the box as an email backup server for a small group of users. Last week one of the drives failed and was replaced with a new drive of the same type. The problem I have been having is getting the box to reboot after a restart or a shutdown halt. The OS and the RAID 1 array are on the same drives that make up the RAID 1 array. The replacement drive (sda) was added to the box and the partitions were created to match the existing good drive (sdb). The array is made up of sda1 and sdb1. I found an interesting point while checking the BIOS settings: there is a "HDD Boot Group Priority" section, and the new drive was selected as the "1. 3rd master"; the server wouldn't boot configured like that, but when I set the old drive to be "1. 4th master", the box will reboot. I'm checking some more things, but I would certainly appreciate any useful information. Thanks in advance.

Building a small server farm

Hi, I am planning to set up a Tech startup company that will provide web application solutions. Eventually we hope to diversify into different areas such as possibly social media or other services. For now we plan on running a high demand (from 1000 to 10,000 users in the first year) website running the application. This includes a MySQL database backend, email, and development servers. My question is then, what type of server arrangement will work best, that is ti say should i have a small cluster of ultra high power machines (E.G. Top of the range Xeons, with 12GB RAM) or will it be better to have more less powerful servers load balanced? Should I go for 1 - 2 u servers rack mounted ot would it be beter for it just to be tower servers for maintainability? Finally I would also like to know what kind of Internet and router i would need, I currently have 10mbit down and barely 1 mbit up, but soon our area will have a fiber optic connection with international speeds of up to 25 mbit / sec. When working with Exchange Server 2007 or newer, disabling a mailbox is a fairly common operation. However, the Technet documentation has no details about the side effects of disabling a mailbox. This is all it says. "This task removes all the Exchange attributes from the user object in Active Directory. Based on the deleted items retention policy, the Exchange store will retain mailbox data for the user object." Source: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123730(v=exchg.141).aspx But is that all? Exchange mailboxes in the real world tend to be highly interconnected. Perhaps the boss has delegated calendar control to a secretary. Maybe a team of staff members all share access to a public folder. Perhaps a power user has been granted the ability to receive email at several different addresses. Two clear questions come to mind. What happens to links between mailboxes after a mailbox is disconnected? Can the Disable-Mailbox operation be easily undone?

3 Server, is this a cluster scenario?

Hello, At the moment I have one Ubuntu server, 9.10, running with a simple Samba share, a mail server, DNS server and DHCP server. Mostly its just there for file sharing and email server. I also have 2 other servers that are exactly the same hardware and spec as the first, which have an rsync set up to retrieve the shared folders and backs them up. However, if the first server goes down, all of our shares disappear along with our mail and the system must be rebuilt. Also I tend to find if people are downloading a large amount from the file server, no-one can access there emails - especially in the morning when everyone is signing in at once. Would it be more beneficial for me to have all 3 servers, all running the same services, doing the same thing with some sort of cluster with load balancing? In short, how can I get the best out of my 3 hardware servers? I'm not really sure where to begin looking, or how to go about such a setup where 3 servers are all identical, but perhaps one acts as the main load balancer?? If someone can point me in the right direction, or if this simply sounds like one of those Enterprise Cloud's that is now a default setup in Ubuntu Server 9.10+, then I'll go down that route. Part of this app is a "Scream" button that plays random screams from cast members of a TV show. I'm working on a real frankensite here not of my own design. There's a rudimentary CMS and one of the pages shows customer records from a MySQL DB. But everything looks ok to me. You'll notice that the customer name is clickable; clicking takes you to another page where you can view their full info as held in the DB - and for both rows, the customer ID is identical, and manually checking the DB shows there's no duplicate entries. The code is definitely rendering each row twice, but for what reason I have no idea. All pointers / advice appreciated.

Hello all! I have a Java / Spring MVC 3 application, using Hibernate and a MySQL database. The new Person is added, but on the line with this.projectService.updateProject(project); I get an error. MVC 3 ModelView passing parameters between view & controller

I've been playing with MVC 3 in a test project and have the following issue. I have Group & Subscriber entities and those are coupled through a SubscriberGroup table. Using the DetailView of Group I open a view of SubscriberGroup containing all subscribers. This list has the option to filter. So far it all works, however when I call the AddToGroup method on the controller it fails. Specifically it goes into the method but doesn't pass the subscriberCheckedModels list. Am I doing something wrong? Mediawiki authenication replacement showing "Login Required" instead of signing user into wiki

I'm fairly to MediaWiki and needed a way to automatically log users in after they authenticated to a central server (which creates a session and cookie for applications to use). I wrote a custom authentication extension based off of the LDAP Authentication extension and a few others. The extension simply needs to read some session data to create or update a user and then log them in automatically. All the authentication is handled externally. A user would not be able to even access the wiki website without logging in externally. This extension was placed into production which replaced the old standard MediaWiki authentication system. I also merged user accounts to prepare for the change. By default, a user must be logged in to view, edit, or otherwise do anything in the wiki. My problem is that I found if a user had previously used the built-in MediaWiki authentication system and returned to the wiki, my extension would attempt to auto-login the user, however, they would see a "Login Required" page instead of the page they requested like they were an anonymous user. If the user then refreshed the page, they would be able to navigate, edit, etc. From what I can tell, this issue resolves itself after the UserID cookie is reset or created fresh (but has been known to strangely come up sometimes). To replicate, if there is an older User ID in the "USERID" cookie, the user is shown the "Login Required" page which is a poor user experience. Another way of showing this page is by removing the user account from the database and refreshing the wiki page. As a result, the user will again see the "Login Required" page. Does anyone know how I can use debugging to find out why MediaWiki thinks the user is not signed in when the cookies are set properly and all it takes is a page refresh? There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. A couple of the tools have a WebLogic Scripting Tool or 'WLST' interface. WLST is a command interface for executing pre-built functions and custom scripts against a domain. Microsoft Enterprise Library Caching Application Block not thread safe?!

Good aftenoon, I created a super simple console app to test out the Enterprise Library Caching Application Block, and the behavior is blaffling. I'm hoping I screwed something that's easy to fix in the setup. Have each item expire after 5 seconds for testing purposes. Basic setup -- "every second pick a number between 0 and 2. if the cache doesn't already have it, put it in there -- otherwise just grab it from the cache. Do this inside a LOCK statement to ensure thread safety. C# Bind DataTable to Existing DataGridView Column Definitions

I've been struggling with a NullReferenceException and hope someone here will be able to point me in the right direction. I'm trying to create and populate a DataTable and then show the results in a DataGridView control. The basic code follows, and Execution stops with a NullReferenceException at the point where I invoke the new UpdateResults_Delegate. Oddly enough, I can trace entries.Rows.Count successfully before I return it from QueryEventEntries, so I can at least show 1) entries is not a null reference, and 2) the DataTable contains rows of data. I am refactoring old code that retrieved records from a database, collected those records as an array, and then later iterated through the array to populate a DataGridView row by row. Threading was originally implemented to compensate and keep the UI responsive during the unnecessary looping. I have since stripped out Thread/Invoke; everything now occurs on the same execution thread (thank you, Sam). I am attempting to replace the slow, unwieldy approach using a DataTable which I can fill with a DataAdapter, and assign to the DataGridView through it's DataSource property (above code updated). I've iterated through the entries DataTable's rows to verify the table contains the expected data before assigning it as the DataGridView's DataSource. foreach (DataRow row in entries.Rows) { System.Diagnostics.Trace.WriteLine( String.Format("{0} {1} {2}", row[0], row[1], row[2])); } One of the column of the DataGridView is a custom DataGridViewColumn to stylize the event_type value. I apologize I didn't mention this before in the original post but I wasn't aware it was important to my problem. I have converted this column temporarily to a standard DataGridViewTextBoxColumn control and am no longer experiencing the Exception. The fields in the DataTable are appended to the list of fields that have been pre-specified in Design view of the DataGridView. The records' values are being populated in these appended fields. When the run time attempts to render the cell a null value is provided (as the value that should be rendered is done so a couple columns over). In light of this, I am re-titling and re-tagging the question. I would still appreciate it if others who have experienced this can instruct me on how to go about binding the DataTable to the existing column definitions of the DataGridView.
