• Windows 7: Edit group policy from command line

  I'm writing an installer and need to change all users' wallpaper. I can do this from the group policy editor GUI, but need to do so from my installer. I can't just edit the registry as it gets reset by a GPO on login. How do I apply the relevant administrative template via programatically (preferably cmd.exe or via the registry)? (for interest, it's User Configuration Administrative Templates Desktop Desktop Desktop Wallpaper [sic] Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

All events are ID 538, 540 and 576 All events pertain to Security Audit of the machine itself logging in successfully. a typical entry is Event Id 540 Successful Network Logon: User Name: <machinename>$ Any pointers to how I can diagnose this? CPU and memory are normal on the machine.

• Windows 2003 SP1 terminal server printers Disappear after reboot - HP laserjet 4240

  had working PCL6 laserjet 4240 driver. needed to downgrade to PCl5, tried but did not get clean install. tried again and it seemed to work (this is 2003 enterprise terminal server SP2) Have over 40 working laserjets (5, 4000, 4100 and 18 of the 4240) After normal nightly reboot the 18 4240 printers were 'gone'. Worked w/Microsoft who said bad HP driver issues - weird since they work on other terminal servers. downloaded latest version, etc. from HP site and can NOT get to work. As soon as I install, then do a Net Stop Spool and Net Start Spooler the printer is 'gone'. Current workaround is to use HP 4000 PCL5 drivers for all of these 4240 printers.

  I have seen that most of virus , spyware etc changes few registry files which are linked to boot process or which starts when window loads user settings. Is there any way to lock those files which are linked to start the system like explorer.exe , userinit.exe so that virus at least should not be able to stop the system to start up. Why did'nt microsoft put those registry file separately so that nothing can touches them Now my userinit.exe file is affected and its not letting me logn on to computer. I get blank desktop but system loads during safe mode. I have run anti virus bootable cd but still have not found solution

• How do I route traffic to website using a spcified network connection on Windows 7

  I want to route all traffic to a website over my wireless connection while the rest of the traffic using my lan. What I tried was first finding out the IP address of the website I want to go to. For example, lets say pandora.com. I found it resolves to 208.85.40.20. I have entered that entry into my hosts file. I then added that route using route add 208.85.40.20 mask 255.255.255.255 WirelessIP. It doesn't seem to work however. Instead of using the IP address, is there a way that I can just say.. this URL to route over that connection? Does anyone know of a program that I can install that will do this.. possibly some sort of proxy or a software load balancer that can do this?

• Cannot resize an ntfs (Windows Server 2k3r2) boot partition booting from gparted

  I am trying to use gparted to make my ntfs system/boot partition larger. I expanded the disk in ESX, providing an extra 60 GB or so of free space. I confirmed that this free space is available in gparted: However, when I try to go to "Move/Resize" the boot partition, there is no unallocated space for me to allocate. It will let me resize the "extended" (non-boot) partition, which makes me think the issue is that the partitions are not contiguous. If it's not obvious, I am no expert in partitioning/storage so any help is appreciated.

  I have a dynamic volume created with two spanned partitions over two disk. Recently, one disk has started failing, and I want to copy the data inside that disk to another disk, before replacing it. However I don't know how to select only what is inside the failing disk, because the partitions spans across both disks. Maybe imaging the entire disk should do the work? For that I need to execute another exe on shutdown, which will disconnect drives mounted by my app. I got few links which shows we can create a entry in Group Policy to execute a programe while window shut down.   I'm trying to connect using PPTP to my VPS. At first, I got the problem that my connection (Wlan, which is what I use to connect to the Internet) goes "limited" (I can't connect to the Internet) when I connect to the VPN. Then, I used to get some long message, something like you might be trying using L2TP. Then now it's back again to the "limited" problem. What's the solution to that problem? One thing I'm not sure of is what I put as my local IP address in "sudo nano /etc/pptpd.conf" Is it 127.0.0.1?   We have some email archiving that is dumping all the emails into a directory. Because of some performance reasons with the server, I want to setup an automated task that will run a script once a day and if there is more than 3,000 (or whatever number) of files in the main directory, create a new directory with the date and move all the main directory files into it. I'm sure someone has already written something similar, so if anyone could point me at it that would be great. Batch file or Powershell would both be fine.

• Splitting Multiple Files in Windows

  We have a 21TB LUN full of images that are approx 600K in size in multiple sub folders on the disk. We are trying to split the 21TB LUN into 8 smaller LUNs that are about 2.6TB a piece in order to process the images more effectively. My question is how we can determine what 2.6TB is on the drive? What is the best tool to mark this data so we can copy it to the new smaller LUNs with robocopy or emcopy without overfilling the smaller LUNs? Is there a third-party tool that would be better suited for this task? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

  I am trying to find a good way to get available RAM percentage from perfmon. I can get Available Mbytes but I can't find any way to get the total installed memory on the server or what is in use via perfmon. I can obviously alert on GB but each of my servers have different total RAM so not a great alert. The way I understand % Committed Bytes is this includes page files on disk so this is not a good indicator. Any help would be appreciated.

• ownership of hard drive recoveery of files Windows 7

  Here is the issue. I have an old laptop that died that was running xp. I now have a win 7 laptop. I need to get the files off the old drive. Win 7 will not let me take ownership of the drive. I can runn the comand prompt in regular mode and do a dir on the drive that shows up as Q: drive in regular mode. I gives me the volume as c and the serial number. I can not take ownership in regular mode with the comand prompt or other means. Microsoft site says use safe mode with networking. So I go to safe mode the drive shows up as G: in safe mode. I use the comand prompt Takeown /f G: and get the device is not ready error. I am at a loss. All I want is to retrieve my files from this drive. Any ideas or sugestions. I don't see how you can dir and get some info in one mode and not acces it in another. I have to get ownership and permissions fixed to get in the drive to get my files. Thanks in advance. I might add that I am using a usb3.0 to ide/sata cable adapter. Software came with the device but I can't make heads or tails out of the manual to know if any of the software can help me. The soft ware is PCClone Ex lite, and Clone Drive Soft ware

What I am trying to do is move files from one folder to another folder (staging) and then deleting the original folder. If you can show me a better way to do this since I am not doing this correctly.
