• LaTeX-like display programming environment

  I used to be a hobbyist programmer, but now I'm also a fairly experienced physicist and find myself programming to solve certain problems quite a lot. In physics, we use variables with superscripts, subscripts, italics, underlines, etc etc. To bridge this gap to the computer we usually use LaTeX. Now, I generally use MATLAB for handling any data and such, and find it very irritating that I can't basically use LaTeX for variable names. Something as simple as sy has to be named either sigma_y or some descriptive name like peak_height_error. I don't necessarily want full on workable LaTeX in my code, but I do want to be able to use greek letters and super/sub-scripts at the very least. Does this exist?

• Launchpad dailybuild source in subdirectory of branch

  I have a repo branch that i have mirrored in Launchpad that I am trying to setup a daily build. The problem is that the source directory of the package is a subdirectory in the branch. When building locally it's no problem because I can just change to that directory. However with launchpad's bzr-builder it does everything from the top directory in the branch. My current build recipe is: # bzr-builder format 0.3 deb-version {debupstream}-{revno}-{revno:packaging} lp:kegbot nest-part packaging lp:~szechyjs/kegbot/kegbot_debian debian debian Ideally I would use lp:kegbot/pykeg but this is not possible in bzr. Is there a easy way I can build the package in the kegbot/pykeg directory, by setting it up in my recipe or some kind of source directory variable in the rules file?

  Since HLSL/Cg do not allow texture fetching inside conditional blocks, I am first checking a variable and performing some computations, afterwards setting a float flag to 0.0 or 1.0, depending on the computations. I'd like to trigger a texture fetch only if the flag is 1.0 or not null, for that matter of fact. I kind of hoped this would do the trick: float4 TU0_atlas_colour = pseudoBool * tex2Dlod(TU0_texture, float4(tileCoord, 0, mipLevel)); That is, if pseudoBool is 0, will the texture fetch function still be called and produce overhead? I was hoping to prevent it from getting executed via this trick that usually works in plain C/C++.

  When I create a bounding box for each object in my chunk, would it be better to store them in a list? List<BoundingBox> cubeBoundingBox Or can I just use a single variable? BoundingBox cubeBoundingBox The bounding boxes will be used for all types of things so they will be moving around. In any case, I'd be adding it to a method that gets called 2500+ times for each chunk, so either I have a giant list of them or 2500+ individual boxes. Is there any advantage to using one or the other?

  The amount of servers and the complexity of our application is growing and we now have servers in different regions (hosted on AWS). Certain database operations require low latency so we have stuck a database in each region (which is basically a user cache) to keep the network latency low. The way the application server currently knows which user cache/database to make its call to depends on an environemnt variable set in it. This has been working fine, but it seems hacky and not optimal. Is there any way for this to be done automatically? I was considering using a package like fping and pinging each database when the app server reloads (or caching it the first time) and using the corresponding latencies to decide which database has the lowest latency for each app server. Not sure if this is the best idea though.

Actually these OOB list forms bind hands of developers for the customization. It gives headache to developers to add just one post back event, for a dropdown field and to populate other fields in NewForm.aspx or EditForm.aspx. On top of that clients always ask such stuff. So here I am going to give you guys a flight for SharePoint Customization world. In this blog, I will explain, how to create CustomListForm WebPart. In my next blogs, I am going to explain easy deployment of List Forms through features and last, guidance on using SharePoint web controls. 1.       First thing, create a class library project through Visual Studio and inherit the class with WebPart class.     public class CustomListForm : WebPart   2.       Declare the public variables and properties which we are going to use throughout the class. • Dead keys in emacs with ibus

  I've just upgraded to 13.10 and noticed that dead keys are not working anymore in emacs (a keystroke to ' leads emacs to display <dead-acute> is undefined instead of waiting to the next key. In addition, use of the compose key leads to <Multi_key> is undefined and it is impossible to use keybindings such as <M-^>. Other applications work fine as far as I can tell. A brief search on the internet suggested to (require 'isotransl) to .emacs. This solves the first issue, but not the other ones. Another possible workaround seen on the web is to launch emacs with an empty XMODIFIERS variable, as XMODIFIERS='' emacs, instead of XMODIFIERS= @im=ibus which seems to be the default in 13.10. Then everything works fine, but it looks like a kludge. Is there a way to make emacs work with ibus on this subject?

• What should be allowed inside getters and setters?

  I got into an interesting internet argument about getter and setter methods and encapsulation. Someone said that all they should do is an assignment (setters) or a variable access (getters) to keep them "pure" and ensure encapsulation. Am I right that this would completely defeat the purpose of having getters and setters in the first place and validation and other logic (without strange side-effects of course) should be allowed? When should validation happen? When setting the value, inside the setter (to protect the object from ever entering an invalid state - my opinion) Before setting the value, outside the setter Inside the object, before each time the value is used Is a setter allowed to change the value (maybe convert a valid value to some canonical internal representation)?

• Adding new events to be handled by script part without recompilation of c++ source code

  As in title I want to write an Event system with handling methods written in external script language, that is Angelscript. The AS methods would have acess to game's world modifing API ( which has to be regsitered for Angelscript Machine as the game starts) . I have come to this problem : if we use the Angelsript for rapid prototyping of the game's world behavior , we would like to be able to define new Event Types, without recompiling the main binary. Is that ever possible , don't stick to Angelscript, I think about any possible scripting language. The main thought is this : If there's some really new Event possible to be constructed , we must monitor some information coming from the binary, for example some variable value changing and the Events are just triggered on some conditions on those changes , wer might be monitoring the Creatures HP, by having a function call on each change, there we could define new Events such as Creature hurt, creature killed, creature healed , creature killed and tormented to pieces ( like geting HP very much below 0 ) . Are there any other ideas of constructing new Events at the scripting side ?

• My Red Gate Experience

  I’m Colin, and I’ve been an intern working with Mike in publishing on Simple-Talk and SQLServerCentral for the past ten weeks. I’ve mostly been working “behind the scenes”, making improvements to the spam filtering, along with various other small tweaks. When I arrived at Red Gate, one of the first things Mike asked me was what I wanted to get out of the internship. It wasn’t a question I’d given a great deal of thought to, but my immediate response was the same as almost anybody: to support my growing family. Well, ok, not quite that, but money was certainly a motivator, along with simply making sure that I didn’t get bored over the summer. Three months is a long time to fill, and many of my friends end up getting bored, or worse, knitting obsessively. With the arrogance which seems fairly common among Cambridge people, I wasn’t expecting to really learn much here! In my mind, the part of the year where I am at Uni is the part where I learn things, whilst Red Gate would be an opportunity to apply what I’d learnt. Thankfully, the opposite is true: I’ve learnt a lot during my time here, and there has been a definite positive impact on the way I write code. The first thing I’ve really learnt is that test-driven development is, in general, a sensible way of working. Before coming, I didn’t really get it: how could you test something you hadn’t yet written? It didn’t make sense! My problem was seeing a test as having to test all the behaviour of a given function. Writing tests which test the bare minimum possible and building them up is a really good way of crystallising the direction the code needs to grow in, and ensures you never attempt to write too much code at time. One really good experience of this was early on in my internship when Mike and I were working on the query used to list active authors: I’d written something which I thought would do the trick, but by starting again using TDD we grew something which revealed that there were several subtle mistakes in the query I’d written. I’ve also been awakened to the value of pair programming. Whilst I could sort of see the point before coming, I also thought that it was impossible that two people would ever get more done at the same computer than if they were working separately. I still think that this is true for projects with pieces that developers can easily work on independently, and with developers who both know the codebase, but I’ve found that pair programming can be really good for learning a code base, and for building up small projects to the point where you can start working on separate components, as well as solving particularly difficult problems. Later on in my internship, for my down tools week project, I was working on adding Python support to Glimpse. Another intern and I we pair programmed the entire project, using ping pong pair programming as much as possible. One bonus that this brought which I wasn’t expecting was that I found myself less prone to distraction: with someone else peering over my shoulder, I didn’t have the ever-present temptation to open gmail, or facebook, or yammer, or twitter, or hacker news, or reddit, and so on, and so forth. I’m quite proud of this project: I think it’s some of the best code I’ve written. I’ve also been really won over to the value of descriptive variables names. In my pre-Red Gate life, as a lone-ranger style cowboy programmer, I’d developed a tendency towards laziness in variable names, sometimes abbreviating or, worse, using acronyms. I’ve swiftly realised that this is a bad idea when working with a team: saving a few key strokes is inevitably not worth it when it comes to reading code again in the future. Longer names also mean you can do away with a majority of comments. I appreciate that if you’ve come up with an O(n*log n) algorithm for something which seemed O(n^2), you probably want to explain how it works, but explaining what a variable name means is a big no no: it’s so very easy to change the behaviour of the code, whilst forgetting about the comments. Whilst at Red Gate, I took the opportunity to attend a code retreat, which really helped me to solidify all the things I’d learnt. To be completely free of any existing code base really lets you focus on best practises and think about how you write code. If you get a chance to go on a similar event, I’d highly recommend it! Cycling to Red Gate, I’ve also become much better at fitting inner tubes: if you’re struggling to get the tube out, or re-fit the tire, letting a bit of air out usually helps. I’ve also become quite a bit better at foosball and will miss having a foosball table! I’d like to finish off by saying thank you to everyone at Red Gate for having me. • Why changing signals causes NameErrors in a sane code? - PyGtk issue

  I'm working on a very simple app for Ubuntu. I've asked a question on stackoverflow, and it seems that the issue I am having is caused by signals, not by the scope of variables, as I originally thought. The problem I am having is that when TextBox emits a signal through activate the whole code works without a glitch. But when I change the signal to insert-at-click it returns NameErrors in every non-TextBox-linked function. Now, It is highly possible I am doing something completely wrong here, but is it at least probable that signals could affect global variable assignments?

• Silverlight 4 Twitter Client &ndash; Part 7

  Download this article as a PDF Welcome back :) This week we are going to look at something more exciting and a much required feature for any twitter client – auto refresh so as to show new status updates. We are going to achieve this using Silverlight 4 Timers and a bit and refresh our datagrid every 2 minutes to show new updates. We will do this so that we do only minimal request to the twitter api, so that twitter does not block us – there is a limit of 150 request an hour. Let us get started now. Also we will get the profile user id hyperlinked, so that when ever the user click on it, we will take them to their twitter page. Also it was a pain to always run this application by pressing F5, then it would open in a browser you would have to right click uninstall and install it again to see any changes. All this and yet we were not able to debug it :( Now there is a solution for this to run a silverlight application directly out of browser and yet have the debug feature. Super cool, here is how. Right on the Silverlight project and go to debug and then select the Out-Of-Browser application option and choose the *.Web project. Then just right click on the SL project and set as Startup Project. There you go, now every time you press F5, it will automatically run out of browser and still have the debug options. I go to know about this after some binging. Now let us jump to the core straight away. 1) To get the user id hyperlinked, we need to have a DataGridTemplateColumn and within that have a HyperLinkButton. The code for this will  be <data:DataGridTemplateColumn> <data:DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate> <DataTemplate> <HyperlinkButton Click="HyperlinkButton_Click" Content="{Binding UserName}" TargetName="_blank" ></HyperlinkButton> </DataTemplate> </data:DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate> </data:DataGridTemplateColumn> 2) Now let us look at how we are getting this done by looking into HyperlinkButton_Click event handler. • Object-Oriented equivalent of LISP's progn function?

  I'm currently writing a LISP parser that iterates through some AutoLISP code and does its best to make it a little easier to read (changing prefix notation to infix notation, changing setq assignments to "=" assignments, etc.) for those that aren't used to LISP code/only learned object oriented programming. While writing commands that LISP uses to add to a "library" of LISP commands, I came across the LISP command "progn". The only problem is that it looks like progn is simply executing code in a specific order and sometimes (not usually) assigning the last value to a variable. Am I incorrect in assuming that for translating progn to object-oriented understanding that I can simply forgo the progn function and print the statements that it contains? If not, what would be a good equivalent for progn in an object-oriented language?

• 2D object-aligned bounding-box intersection test

  Hi all, I have two object-aligned bounding boxes (i.e. not axis aligned, they rotate with the object). I'd like to know if two object-aligned boxes overlap. (Edit: note - I'm using an axis-aligned bounding box test to quickly discard distant objects, so it doesn't matter if the quad routine is a little slower.) My boxes are stored as four x,y points. I've searched around for answers, but I can't make sense of the variable names and algorithms in examples to apply them to my particular case. I know for sure I'm not that bad a developer! So many times, he enforces his ideals, which are not even best practices in the industry! • OpenVPN stopped working, what could have happened?

  I have Openvpn, and it worked great when I used it on PC (Windows 8), then I copied all files (Certificates and config) to an Android 4 phone to use them. Now, Openvpn works on the phone, but not the PC. Specifically, when I open Google I get: The server at www.google.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed, but the VPN seems to be connected. I have a simple question, could the problem be because I copied the same files? • GPL'ing code of a third party?

  I am facing the following dilemma at the moment. I am using code from a scientific paper in a commercial project. So basically I copied and pasted the code from the paper's pdf into my code editor and use it in my own code. The code in the paper does not have any copy restrictions or license(like the GPL) so I thought I would be ok using it in a commercial project. However, I have seen several gpl licensed open source projects that use the exact same code from the paper to the point of having the same variable names like in the paper. So what happened here is that a gpl license was put on a third parties non gpl'ed code. Are these open source projects in violation of the gpl or would I be in violation of the gpl because I use code which has been gpl'ed? My common sense tells me it is not allowed to gpl somebody elses non-gpl'ed (like in this case from the paper) code but I though I would ask anyway.

  i'm making my 1st game. i'm using javascript as i currently want to learn to make games without needing to learn another language but this is more of a general game dev question its a 2d turn-based tile/grid game. you can check it here http://www.patinterotest.tk/ it creates a movable area when you hover a player and it implements the A* algo for moving the player. The Problem: i want to make the 'dynamic movable area creation' already implement a limited number of steps for a player. The Questions: what is a good way to do this? is there another algorithm to use for this? the A* algorithm needs a start and destination, with what i want to do i don't have a destination or should i just limit the iteration of the A* algo to the steps variable? hopefully you understand the problem & questions easily

  I am reading Evans's Domain Driven Design. The book says that there are entity and there are services. If I were to implement an operation, how to decide whether I should add it as a method on an entity or do it in a service class? e.g. myEntity.DoStuff() or myService.DoStuffOn(myEntity)? Does it depend on whether other entities are involved? If it involves other entities, implement as service operation? But entities can have associations and can traverse it from there too right? Does it depend on stateless or not? But service can also access entities' variable, right? Like in do stuff myService.DoStuffOn, it can have code like if(myEntity.IsX) doSomething(); Which means that it will depend on the state? Or does it depend on complexity? How do you define complex operations?

• Using env variables with RewriteRule and ErrorDocument

  Hi, I'm having problems with the following while config. my Apache server to Rewrite some urls. SetEnv PATH_TO_DIR /directory RewriteRule ^%{PATH_TO_DIR}/([a-zA-Z0-9_\-]+)/([a-zA-Z0-9_\-\.]+)/?$ /index.php?dir=$1&file=$2 ErrorDocument 404 %{PATH_TO_DIR}/index.php?dir=null&file=error This conf. used to work perfectly fine until I used SetEnv PATH... etc. I need to use this because there are lots of rules, not just those. Can anyone point out my mistake? Apache returns %{PATH_TO_DIR}/index.php?dir=null&file=error when I try anything (www.site.com/foo/bar for instance). Apache returns the ErrorDocument if i just try to fetch the index. I know it's not a problem with the rewrite rules because they work when I remove the PATH_TO_DIR variable and just hard code it.   Reminder to myself - SQL Server has nice index columns directly tied to their tables. Oracle has sequences that are islands to themselves. select seq_name.currval from dual; select seq_name.nextval from dual; currval - return current number at top of sequence nextval - increment sequence by 1, return new number   therefore - to create functionality in oracle similar to an index column - OPTION A) - Create insert trigger: CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER dept_bir BEFORE INSERT ON departments FOR EACH ROW WHEN (new.id IS NULL) BEGIN SELECT dept_seq.NEXTVAL INTO :new.id FROM dual; END; This will handle creating a unique identity, but will not necessarily inform process flow of identity without additional logic. OPTION B) - Select indentity into temp variable, insert whole item into tab **** When attemptint to query currval, the below error was being thrown - SELECT seq_name.currval from dual; ERROR : TABLE OR VIEW DOES NOT EXIST *** Although Oracle sys tables may have access to the sequences, that isn't to say the Oracle user may have access to those sequences - verify permissions when the system can't see object that are being reported in the object explorer.
