• VCE at the VCS!?!?

Our team is part of the recently announced Microsoft Technical Computing group. Specifically, we are working on new debugger functionality, integrated with Visual Studio (we are starting work on the next version), aimed to address HPC and GPGPU scenarios (and continuing the Parallel Debugging scenarios we started addressing with VS2010). We now have many more openings on our debugger team. • Use MvcContrib Grid to Display a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC

  The past six articles in this series have looked at how to display a grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application and how to implement features like sorting, paging, and filtering. In each of these past six tutorials we were responsible for generating the rendered markup for the grid. Our Views included the <table> tags, the <th> elements for the header row, and a foreach loop that emitted a series of <td> elements for each row to display in the grid. While this approach certainly works, it does lead to a bit of repetition and inflates the size of our Views. The ASP.NET MVC framework includes an HtmlHelper class that adds support for rendering HTML elements in a View. An instance of this class is available through the Html object, and is often used in a View to create action links (Html.ActionLink), textboxes (Html.TextBoxFor), and other HTML content. Such content could certainly be created by writing the markup by hand in the View; however, the HtmlHelper makes things easier by offering methods that emit common markup patterns. You can even create your own custom HTML Helpers by adding extension methods to the HtmlHelper class. MvcContrib is a popular, open source project that adds various functionality to the ASP.NET MVC framework. This includes a very versatile Grid HTML Helper that provides a strongly-typed way to construct a grid in your Views. Using MvcContrib's Grid HTML Helper you can ditch the <table>, <tr>, and <td> markup, and instead use syntax like Html.Grid(...). This article looks at using the MvcContrib Grid to display a grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application. • Are web application usability issues equal to website usability issues?

  I've been reading two books about web usability issues and tests (Rocket Surgery Made Easy¹ and Prioritizing Web Usability²) and they claim some strategies and typical problems about website usability and how to lead them. However, I want to do a web application, and I think I lost track of what I am trying to solve. These two books claim to work with raw websites (e-commerce, business sites, even intranet), but I'm not sure if everything about web usability is applicable to web application usability. They sure talk about always having available (and usable) the Back button, to focus on short information rather than big amounts of text, etc., but they could be inaccurate in deeper problems that may be easier (or just skippable) in regular websites. Has anybody some experience in this field and could tell me if both web applications and websites share their usability issues? Thanks in advance Edit: Quoting Wikipedia, a website is a collection of related web pages containing images, videos or other digital assets, and a web application is an application that is accessed over a network such as the Internet or an intranet. To sum up, both shows/lets you search/produce information but websites are "simple" in interaction and keep the classics of websites (one-click actions) and the other one is closer to desktop applications in the meaning of their uses and ways of interaction (double click, modal windows, asynchronous calls [to keep you in the same "environment" instead of reloading it] etc.). I don't know if this clarifies the difference. Edit 2: Quoting @Victor and myself, a website is anything running in your browser, but a web application is somewhat running in your browser that could be running in your desktop, with similar behaviors and features. Gmail is a web application that could replace Outlook. GDocs could replace Office. Grooveshark could replace your music player, etc.

As with any Devoxx conference, this UK edition will have a nice mix of content, an impressive list of speakers and obviously Java EE will be well will covered too:  Apache TomEE, Java EE Web Profile and more on Tomcat (David Blevins) Myths, Tales and Voodoo - About Java EE and Testing (Adam Bien) 50 new features of Java EE 7 (Antonio Goncalves & Arun Gupta) Java EE 7 Hands-on Lab (Arun Gupta) In addition, there will be 2 BoF related to Java EE on Thursday evening, the first BoF will be about the Java EE platform and the second one will be about the Java EE Reference Implementation, i.e. GlassFish. I will participate in the Java EE Community BoF where will discuss Java EE general but with all recent activities, I suspect that a large portion of the BoF will spent on discussing the current plans for Java EE 8.  Right after and in the same room, I will join Steve Millidge of C2B2 for the GlassFish is here to stay! • Does F# kill C++?

  Okay, so the title may be a little misleading… but I am currently travelling and so have had very little time and access to resources to do much fsharping – this has meant that I am right now missing my favourite new language. I was interested to see this post on Stack Overflow this evening concerning the performance of the F# language. The person posing the question asked 8 key points about the F# language, namely… How well does it do floating-point? Does it allow vector instructions How friendly is it towards optimizing compilers? How big a memory foot print does it have? Does it allow fine-grained control over memory locality? Does it have capacity for distributed memory processors, for example Cray? What features does it have that may be of interest to computational science where heavy number processing is involved? Are there actual scientific computing implementations that use it? Now, I don’t have much time to look into a decent response and to be honest I don’t know half of the answers to what he is asking, but it was interesting to see what was put up as an answer so far and would be interesting to get other peoples feedback on these questions if they know of anything other than what has been covered in the answer section already.

Yesterday I was trying to find a tweet I’d sent some time last year regarding my search for an application that could count keystrokes for inclusion in my review of the app I finally found to fulfill the need, KeyCounter. Searching for it with Twitter’s search tool yielded nothing. One simple search at SnapBird and I nailed it. SnapBird requires no authentication to search public tweets (both your own and those of your friends and follows) but does require authentication in order to search through your sent and received direct messages. • Synaptics drivers are not loading on Kubuntu 13.10 on Dell Vostro 2420

  I freshly installed Kubuntu 13.10, 32 bit version on newly purchased Dell Vostro 2420. everything is working fine except scrolling and multitouch features through touchpad. I am able to change position of cursor using touchpad and able to tap (single click and double click) but scrolling is not working I tried to find out solution by searching on google but could not find proper solution to load synaptics drivers. i am listing some details: Laptop: Dell Vostro 2420 Linux Kernel version and distribution: 3.11.0-12-generic, Kubuntu 13.10 output of xinput list is ? • Upcoming events : OBUG Connect Conference 2012

  The Oracle Benelux User Group (OBUG) have given me an amazing opportunity to present a one day Optimizer workshop at their annual Connect Conference in Maastricht on April 24th. The workshop will run as one of the parallel tracks at the conference and consists of three 45 minute sessions. Each session can be attended stand alone but they will build on each other to allow someone new to the Oracle Optimizer or SQL tuning to come away from the conference with a better understanding of how the Optimizer works and what techniques they should deploy to tune their SQL. Below is a brief description of each of the sessions Session 7 - 11:30 am Oracle Optimizer: Understanding Optimizer StatisticsThe workshop opens with a discussion on Optimizer statistics and the features introduced in Oracle Database 11g to improve the quality and efficiency of statistics-gathering. The session will also provide strategies for managing statistics in various database environments.   If you are an Oracle customer, you are probably familiar with Oracle ADF (Application Development Framework). If you are not, ADF is, in a nutshell, a Java EE based framework that simplifies the development of enterprise applications. It is the development framework that was used, among other things, to build Oracle Fusion Applications. Oracle has just released ADF Essentials, a free to develop and deploy version of Oracle ADF's core technologies. As a good news never come alone, GlassFish 3.1.2 is now a certified container for ADF Essentials! ADF Essentials leverage core ADF features and includes: Oracle ADF Faces - a set of more than 150 JSF 2.0 rich components that simplify the creation of rich Web user interfaces (charting, data vizualization, advanced tables, drag and drop, touch gesture support, extensive windowing capabilities, etc.) Oracle ADF Controller - an extension of the JSF controller that helps build reusable process flows and provides the ability to create dynamic regions within Web pages. Oracle ADF Binding - an XML-based, meta-data abstraction layer to connect user interfaces to business services. Oracle ADF Business Components – a declaratively-configured layer that simplifies developing business services against relational databases by providing reusable components that implement common design patterns. • What to learn to make a photo gallery site like this? [closed]

  I started a Wordpress site for my blog but now I want to start another domain for sharing my photos. I used to use Flickr but it requires you to sign up for Flickr Pro if you want to upload over a certain amount of photos. Since I don't want to pay for that, I'm looking to create a photo gallery site like this: http://10mmgalore.com/ or http://www.shuttermaki.com/ But how do you go about with that? Would I be able to install Wordpress and find a theme like that? And/Or are there any Wordpress plugins that I can install to make it like look like that? Or do I need different tools and platforms asides from Wordpress? So can someone list the features, tools and information that I need to make a photo gallery site? The main functions that I want for my site is to have a picture in the middle and when the user clicks on the photo, it goes to the next photo; or there are left and right arrows that users can click to the next photo. I just want to create an album website for my 365 days project (a photo a day). It doesn't have to be as fancy as the sites mentioned above. Thank you!

  I have worked extensively in developing web applications using PHP and ASP.NET, but one of the questions that I'm constantly asked by customers is whether to move forward with a php website or an asp.net website. So naturally the first thing that comes to mind is to answer the question like this: PHP is open-source and ASP.NET is from Microsoft. Usually after something like that is said the customer has a blank look on there face. Apparently the fact that one is open source and the other isn't doesn't really faze them. And for good reason, because when I first heard it, it really doesn't tell me much. I know from working with both that each have their + and - when it comes to developing websites. NOTE: THIS QUESTION IS NOT TO QUESTION WHICH IS BETTER TO DEVELOP WITH. THIS QUESTION IS INTENDED TO BE OBJECTIVE. My question is what are differences between ASP.NET and PHP as far as Features Security Extendability Frameworks Average Development Time And when one is generally used over the other for certain types of projects. I am trying to compile a list of facts to be able to compare with the customer what developement platform is better for there particular project. I have done a simple search on google and a ton of articles come up, but the problem is the majority are usually biased towards PHP or ASP.NET. Also if you can maybe provide examples from experience when one technology was more preferable than the other that would be awesome.

• How to SEO Optimize Javascript Image Loader?

  I am building an image-centric catalog website. It catalogs collectible gaming cards numbering 100,000+ pages. Competitor sites recieve millions of hits each month, so with the possibility of excessive traffic, I need to moderate image bandwidth while also optimizing for image SEO. I'm looking for some tips on doing so. Each page on the site features one card with appropriate tags and descriptions. There are however four images for each card - one on matte cardstock, one on foil cardstock, one digital, and one digital foil. In a world with unlimited bandwidth and no-wait page loads, I'd simply embed all four images on the main product page with titles, alt tags, and captions to rank them according to their version keyword. In reality a javascript gallery image loader seems appropriate. Here is a simplified example of my current code. Would this affect SEO in any way? Should I be doing anything differently? Note that I don't want to create a page for each image as I'd have to duplicate the card tags and descriptions on each one, diluting PR for the main page. • Best practices for App Idea ownership and shares

  I am developing apps on my sparetime. I am the sole developer, and two non-programmer friends of mine provide vision, content, algorithms and ideas. We always agree happily on all the features, todos and prioritizations. But naturally, coding it is the biggest part. When selling, we agree on splitting profit equally, that is 33% each. But version 1.0 naturally does not sell much. And I go on to try to make the app more viral. This includes tons of stuff where the others are of little help. Examples: Adding support for sharing, facebook connect, gameifying, letting users add content, home page, support, maintenance, server services to make it easier for to update content. The list is long. Suddenly I will be doing 100% of a lot of work but only "own" a third of the income. My friends may either "fade out" of the project after 1.0, or they continue to contribute, but with less value and I would rather exchange them for more programmers or graphic designers. The effort they made to version 1.0 is worth a lot to the app and I realize I would have never done it without them. But I am doing all the work in the end. It is hard to negotiate about splitting 90, 5, 5 instead of 33% each, because the idea is still theirs. How to solve this? What are the best practices to regard the ownership of the app? What kind of agreements could I make that make it beneficial and motivational for me to continue developing the app?
