• Hung JVM consuming 100% CPU

  We have a JAVA server running on Sun JRE 6u20 on Linux 32-bit (CentOS). We use the Server Hotspot with CMS collector with the following options (I've only provided the relevant ones): -Xmx896m -Xss128k -XX:NewSize=384M -XX:MaxPermSize=96m -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC Sometimes, after running for a while, the JVM seems to slip into a hung state, whereby even though we don't make any requests to the application, the CPU continues to spin at 100% (we have 8 logical CPUs, so it looks like only one CPU does the spinning). In this state the JVM doesn't respond to SIGHUP signals (kill -3) and we can't connect to it normally with jstack. We CAN connect with "jstack -F", but the output is dodgy (we can see lots of NullPointerExceptions from JStack apparently because it wasn't able to 'walk' some stacks). So the "jstack -F" output seems to be useless. We have checked the memory usage on the box, there seems to be enough memory available and the system is not swapping. Has anyone come across such a situation? Does it look like a JVM bug? UPDATE I've obtained some more information about this problem (it happened again on a server that has been running for more than 7 days). When the JVM entered the "hung" state it stayed like that for 2 hours until the server was manually restarted. We have obtained a core dump of the process and the gc log. We tried to get a heap dump as well, but "jmap" failed. We tried to use jmap -F but then only a 4Mb file was written before the program aborted with an exception (something about the a memory location not being accessible). So far I think the most interesting information comes from the gc log. The fact that the server stayed in the hung state for 2 hours (probably trying to GC and compact the old generation) seems quite strange to me. Also, the gc log stops suddenly with that message and nothing else gets printed any more, probably because the VM Thread gets into some sort of infinite loop (or something that takes 2+ hours).

  I have a variable in xQuery of type xs:string with the value of an encoded HTML snippet (the content of a twitter tweet). Instead the string is getting written out as is and the browser is rendering it as just text (so you see <a href="blah.... ). Here's how I'm writing out this string: {$entry/atom:content/text()} How can I have the escaped characters unencoded so it writes < rather tha &lt; ? I've tried to do a replacelike this but it always replaces the &lt; with &lt; ! fn:replace($s, "&lt;", "<")

  I have developed my webservice in Java CXF which returns java.util.List. This webservice is password enabled. that means i have used org.apache.cxf.ws.security.wss4j.WSS4JInInterceptor for security purpose. Now i want to call this webservice from php. but i am not able to do so.   Hi! I have problem with setting proper charset on my jsf pages. I use MySql db with latin2 (ISO-8859-2 charset) and latin2_croatian_ci collation. But, I have problems with setting values on backing managed bean properties. Page directive on top of my page is: <%@ page language="java" pageEncoding="ISO-8859-2" contentType="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-2" %> In head I included: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-2"> And my form tag is: <h:form id="entityDetails" acceptcharset="ISO-8859-2"> I've created and registered Filter in web.xml with following doFilter method implementation: public void doFilter(ServletRequest request, ServletResponse response, FilterChain chain) throws IOException, ServletException { request.setCharacterEncoding("ISO-8859-2"); response.setCharacterEncoding("ISO-8859-2"); chain.doFilter(request, response); } But, i.e. when I set managed bean property through inputText, all special (unicode) characters are replaced with '?' character. I really don't have any other ideas how to set charset to pages to perform well. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

• Converting C# void* to byte[]

  In C#, I need to write T[] to a stream, ideally without any additional buffers. I have a dynamic code that converts T[] (where T is a no-objects struct) to a void* and fixes it in memory, and that works great. When the stream was a file, I could use native Windows API to pass the void * directly, but now I need to write to a generic Stream object that takes byte[]. Can anyone suggest a hack way to create a dummy array object which does not actually have any heap allocations, but rather points to an already existing (and fixed) heap location. If the client decides to send one file at a time, there's no problem, I get the file as I expected, but if it tries to send more than one I only get the first one. • Flash video slooow in AIR 2 HTMLLoader component

  I am working on a full screen kiosk application in Flex 4/Air 2 using Flash Builder 4. We have a company training website which staff can access via the kiosk, and the main content is interactive flash training videos. Our target machines are by no means 'beefy', they are Atom n270s @ 1.6Ghz with 1Gb RAM. As it stands the videos are all but unusable when used from within the Air application, the application becomes completely unresponsive (100% cpu usage, click events take approx 5-10 seconds to register). So far I have tried: increasing the default frame rate from 24fps to 60. No improvement. nativeWindow.stage.frameRate = 60; running the videos in a stripped down version of my app, just a full screen HTMLLoader component pointed at the training website. No better than before. disabled hyper threading. The Atom CPU is split into two virtual cores, and the AIR app was only able to use one thread so maxed out at 50% CPU usage. Since the kiosk will only run the AIR app I am happy to loose hyper threading to increase the performance of the Air app. Marginal Improvement. The same website with the same videos is responsive if viewed in ie7 on the same machine, although Internet Explorer takes advantage of the CPU’s hyper threading. The flash videos are built with Adobe Captivate and from what I understand employee JavaScript to relay results back to the server. I will add more information about the video content asap as the training guru is back in the office later this week.

• Adapting existing HTML/Javascript model to Titanium's latest release (v 0.9)

  In pre-0.9 versions of Titanium, one could simply specify an .html file (local or remote) in the tiapp.xml file and interact with it in the same manner as one would on a website. As of version 0.9, that is no the longer case. One creates their entire app dynamically. Unfortunately, this broke my previous implementation and, other than an updated Kitchen Sink, much of the new model and API calls are not covered in the documentation (e.g., createLabel). So, my question is this... What are the simplest steps for re-creating the previous effect (knowingly forgoing some of the advantages of the Titanium's latest approach if necessary)? My previous implementation was exactly as it functions on the website. The website has a single index.html file with no content other than links to JavaScript and style files. The document body's onload event called the first JavaScript function (located in the main script) and, from that point forth, the entire content was dynamically created. How can I set up the latest version of Titanium so that I am poised to do the exact same thing? BTW: Whereas I previously had the choice to keep the files local or remote, I don't believe that remote access (e.g., simply using the webView widget to point to the website) is viable. That's because pages displayed via the webView do not have access to most of the API. Since the iPhone and Safari browsers do not support the file input type, the only means for uploading files (something my app requires) is calling Titanium's function. Thanks in advance.

• How do I use a different image for each JQuery UI Slider handle

  I'm using a JQuery UI slider which has two handles (a.k.a range slider). I know how to style the first handle: .ui-slider-horizontal .ui-slider-handle {background: white url(http://stackoverflow.com/content/img/so/vote-arrow-down.png) no-repeat scroll 50% 50%;} But how do I style the second handle differently? Using Firebug I can see Jquery does not uniquely identify each handle: <div id="hourlyRateSlider" class="ui-slider ui-slider-horizontal ui-widget ui-widget-content ui-corner-all"> <div class="ui-slider-range ui-widget-header" style="left: 26%; width: 46%;"/> <a class="ui-slider-handle ui-state-default ui-corner-all" href="#" style="left: 26%;"/> <a class="ui-slider-handle ui-state-default ui-corner-all" href="#" style="left: 72%;"/> </div> So I imagine I have to use either a CSS child selector which could be cross-browser problematic. • x-dom-event-stream in Opera 10 Only Working on First Event

  I have a python script (in the CherryPy framework) that sends Event: and data: text as this Opera blog post describes to a client browser. The javascript that recieves the x-dom-event-stream content is almost identical to what they show in the blog post. However, the browser displays only the first event sent. Anyone know what I'm missing? I tried a few older versions of Opera and found that it works in Opera 9.52 but not in any newer versions. What did they change?   Hi everyone, I am using a lot of HTTP Requests in an application that I am writing which uses OAuth. Currently, I am sending my GET and POST requests the same way: HttpConnection connection = (HttpConnection) Connector.open(url + connectionParameters); connection.setRequestMethod(method); connection.setRequestProperty("WWW-Authenticate", "OAuth realm=api.netflix.com"); int responseCode = connection.getResponseCode(); And this is working fine. I am successfully POSTing and GETing. However, I am worried that I am not doing POST the right way. Do I need to include in the above code the following if-statement? if (method.equals("POST") && postData != null) { connection.setRequestProperty("Content-type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"); connection.setRequestProperty("Content-Length", Integer .toString(postData.length)); OutputStream requestOutput = connection.openOutputStream(); requestOutput.write(postData); requestOutput.close(); } If so, why? • Ruby on Rails / Yellow Maps For Ruby Plugin woes...

  Okay I've read through the plugin comments and the docs as well and I have yet to come up with an answer as to how to do this. Here's my problem I want to use the :info_window_tabs and the :icon option, but I don't know what format to pass my information in. According to the documentation the following code should be correct. Here's my code: @mapper.overlay_init(GMarker.new([map.lat, map.lng], :title => map.name, :info_window_tabs => [ {:tab => "HTML", :content => @marker_html}, {:tab => "Attachments", :content => "stuff"}], :icon => { :image => "../images/icon.png" })) The readme and documentation can be viewed here. And the relevant ruby file that I am trying to interact with, including the author's comments, can be viewed here. • Eclipse PDE - Plug-in, Feature, and Product Versioning

  I am having much confusion over the process of upgrading version numbers in dependent plug-ins, features, and products in a fairly large eclipse workspace. I have made API changes to java code residing in an existing plug-in and thus requires an increase of the Major part of the version identifier. This plug-in serves as a dependency to a given feature, where the feature is later included in a product. From the documentation at http://wiki.eclipse.org/Version_Numbering, I understand (for the most part) when the proper number should be increased on the containing plug-in itself. However, how would this Major version number change on the plug-in affect dependent, "down-the-line" items (e.g., features, products)? For example, assume we have the typical "Hello World" setup as follows: Plug-in: com.example.helloworld, version 1.0.0 Feature: com.example.helloworld.feature, version 1.0.0 Product: com.example.helloworld.product, version 1.0.0 If I were to make an API change in the plug-in, this would require a version update to be that of 2.0.0. What would then be the version of the feature, 1.1.0? The same question can be applied for the product level as well (e.g., if the feature is 1.1.0 OR 2.0.0, what is the product version number)? I'm sure this is quite the newbie question so I apologize for wasting anyone's time and effort. I have searched for this type of content but all I am finding is are examples showing how to develop a plug-in, feature, product, and update site for the first time. The only other content related to my search has been developing feature patches and have not touched on the versioning aspect as much as I would prefer. I am having difficulty coming into (for the first time) an Eclipse RCP / PDE environment and need to learn the proper way and / or best practices for making such versioning updates and how to best reflect this throughout other dependent projects in the workspace.

• Metamorphs Messing Up CSS in Ember.js Views

  I'm using Ember.js / handlebars to loop through a collection and spit out some items that I'd like bootstrap to handle nice and responsive like. Here is the issue: The bootstrap-responsive css has some declrations in it like: .row-fluid > [class*="span"]:first-child { margin-left: 0; } and .row-fluid:before, .row-fluid:after { display: table; content: ""; } These rules seem to target the first children. • Personalization in ASP.Net MVC -- friendly URLs, and skinning

  Hi everyone, I haven't delved into custom generation of friendly URLs in ASP.Net MVC, and was wondering if anyone had suggestions. For example, if John Smith were to create an account on www.example.com, I'd like for his homepage to read www.example.com/JohnSmith -- along with the option for him to choose his URL. The ideal is for this to happen with no intervention on my part in the route maps. Also, does anyone have guidelines on good ways to go to customize an MVC site based on URL? Again, using example.com I'd like for John to choose a color theme and logo for his homepage, then apply it accordingly. Thanks for your tips and suggestions.

• Using httplib2 in python 3 properly? (Timeout problems)

  Hey, first time post, I'm really stuck on httplib2. I've been reading up on it from diveintopython3.org, but it mentions nothing about a timeout function. I look up the documentation, but the only thing I see is an ability to put a timeout int but there are no units specified (seconds? milliseconds? What's the default if None?) This is what I have (I also have code to check what the response is and try again, but it's never tried more than once) h = httplib2.Http('.cache', timeout=None) for url in list: response, content = h.request(url) more stuff... So the Http object stays around until some arbitrary time, but I'm downloading a ton of pages from the same server, and after a while, it hangs on getting a page. No errors are thrown, the thing just hangs at a page. So then I try: h = httplib2.Http('.cache', timeout=None) for url in list: try: response, content = h.request(url) except: h = httplib2.Http('.cache', timeout=None) more stuff... But then it recreates another Http object every time (goes down the 'except' path)...I dont understand how to keep getting with the same object, until it expires and I make another. Also, is there a way to set a timeout on an individual request? Thanks for the help!

• Young people using Emacs?

  I am a college student that has fallen in love with Emacs. I have used IDEs in the past, and although features like Intellisense made the switch to Emacs very hard, I now think that Emacs is much more powerful, and features like Intellisense can be pretty closely matched by various modes depending on language (and I am not referring to M-/). I am happily writing Elisp code for everything that I need that isn't provided by modes or by Emacs itself and I love the way that it adapts and molds to my needs. However, I do think that its main disadvantage is the fact that it has a pretty steep learning curve and that most new programmers will not even begin to learn it out of many common misconceptions. So, I want to know the opinions of young people (or any person who didn't start using Emacs before there were IDEs) that are Emacs users. Just to get some reassurance that Emacs is not dead within our Eclipse-loving generation =). (Opinions of users of any other highly extensible editor like Jedit are also welcome)

• Android Apps not working in emulator

  None of my apps work in the emulator. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and everytime I try to access my UI, the app crashes. All I get is an "Sorry! The application ... has stopped unexpectedly". • Cannot install XML::LibXML module on Windows

  I am trying to use XPath to extract some HTML tags and data and for that I need to use XML::LibXML module. I tried installing it from CPAN shell but it doesn't install. I followed the instructions from CPAN site about the installation, that we need to install libxml2, iconv and zlib wrappers before installing XML::LibXML and it didn't work out. Also, if there is any other simpler module that gets my task done, please let me know. The task at hand: I am searching for a specific <dd> tag on a html page which is really big ( around 5000 - 10000) <dd> and <dt> tags. So, I am writing a script which matches the content within <dd> tag and fetches the content within the corresponding (next) <dt> tag. I wish i could i have been a little more clearer. Any help is greatly appreciated.
