• Key Windows Phone Development Concepts

  As I am doing more development in and out of the enterprise arena for Windows Phone I decide I would study for the 70-599 test.  I generally take certification tests as a way to force me to dig deeper into a technology.  Between the development and studying I decided it would be good to put a post together of key development features in Windows Phone 7 environment.  Contrary to popular belief the launch of Windows Phone 8 will not obsolete Windows Phone 7 development.  With the launch of 7.8 coming shortly and people who will remain on 7.X for the foreseeable future there are still consumers needing these apps so don’t throw out the baby with the bath water. PhoneApplicationService This is a class that every Windows Phone developer needs to become familiar with.  When it comes to application state this is your go to repository.  It also contains events that help with management of your application’s lifecycle.  You can access it like the following code sample. 1: PhoneApplicationService.Current.State["ValidUser"] = userResult; DeviceNetworkInformation This class allows you to determine the connectivity of the device and be notified when something changes with that connectivity.  If you are making web service calls you will want to check here before firing off. This MSDN article is a good place to get the basics of push notification, but you can see the essential concept in the diagram below.  There are three types of push notification: toast, Tile and raw.  The first two work regardless of the state of the application where as raw messages are discarded if your application is not running.   Live Tiles Live tiles are one of the main differentiators of the Windows Phone platform.  They allow users to find information at a glance from their start screen without navigating into individual apps.  Knowing how to implement them can be a great boost to the attractiveness of your application. The simplest step-by-step explanation for creating live tiles is here. Local Database While your application really only has Isolated Storage as a data store there are some ways of giving you database functionality to develop against.  There are a number of open source ORM style solutions.  Probably the best and most native way I have found is to use LINQ to SQL.  It does take a significant amount of setup, but the ease of use once it is configured is worth the cost.  Rather than repeat the full concepts here I will point you to a post that I wrote previously. Tasks (Bing, Email) Leveraging built in features of the Windows Phone platform is an easy way to add functionality that would be expensive to develop on your own.  The classes that you need to make yourself familiar with are BingMapsDirectionsTask and EmailComposeTask.  This will allow your application to supply directions and give the user an email path to relay information to friends and associates. Event model Because of the ability for users to switch quickly to switch to other apps or the home screen is just one reason why knowing the Windows Phone event model is important.  You need to be able to save data so that if a user gets a phone call they can come back to exactly where they were in your application.  This means that you will need to handle such events as Launching, Activated, Deactivated and Closing at an application level.  You will probably also want to get familiar with the OnNavigatedTo and OnNavigatedFrom events at the page level.  These will give you an opportunity to save data as a user navigates through your app. Summary This is just a small portion of the concepts that you will use while building Windows Phone apps, but these are some of the most critical.  With the launch of Windows Phone 8 this list will probably expand.  Take the time to investigate these topics further and try them out in your apps. del.icio.us Tags: Windows Phone 7,Windows Phone,WP7,Software Development,70-599

• Upstart: sense of "stop on..." stanza when job is a task

  Hi, an upstart question (I think I have read all relevant man pages but could not find the answer there): What is the sense of using a "stop on ..." stanza in the definition of a job which is a task? The manuals tell us that such a job, after being started, just waits until its script (or exec stanza) is executed completely, and then stops automatically. Given that, what is the point in using "stop on ..." stanzas in such job definitions? For example, this is the job definition for Upstart's (very important) rc job in Natty 11.04 (leaving out comments and empty lines): start on runlevel [0123456] stop on runlevel [!$RUNLEVEL] export RUNLEVEL export PREVLEVEL console output env INIT_VERBOSE task exec /etc/init.d/rc $RUNLEVEL IMHO, the job, after being started by a runlevel event, will be stopped automatically as soon as /etc/init.d/rc $RUNLEVEL has finished.   Problem: Black screen after resume I found the below statement that I provided the link for but, no instructions with it for a person that's new to Ubuntu on what exactly to do to fix the problem. Can someone clarify this for me? Thank you. Ubunu 13.10 AMD A6-3420M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics × 4 64bit Toshiba L775 My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? Typical scenario is "use a laptop docked with lid closed, only the external screen is active, suspend, take the laptop, open it somewhere"... which leads to "no screen active". To debug this problem, check if gnome-settings-daemons is getting a signal that the display configuration has changed, by running xtrace against it, and look for a RRScreenChangeNotify event when resuming the machine. If that signal is being sent, then it indicates a possible bug in g-s-d. Otherwise, it suggests a bug in either X or (more likely) the kernel which is not causing the signal to be emitted to begin with.

• If my URL's are static, but then parsed by Javascript, does that make it crawlable?

  Lets say I have a link: <a href="/about/">About Us</a> But in Javascript [or jQuery] catches it and then adds the hash based off of the href attribute: $('a').click(function(e) { e.preventDefault(); // Extremely oversimplified.. window.location.hash = $(this).attr('href'); }); And then we use a hashchange event to do the general 'magic' of Ajax requests. This allows for the actual href to be seen by crawlers, but gives client-side users with JS enabled an ajax-based website. Does this 'help' the general SEO issues that come along with hashtags? I know hashbangs are 'ok', but afaik they aren't reliable?

• Take Camera Phone Macro Photos with a Cheap Laser Pointer Lens

  Inside those cheap laser pointers you see in the grocery store checkout line there’s a handy little plastic lens that, when slapped on your phone’s camera, makes it easy to take macro photographs. In this tutorial, they take the lens from a laser point and secure it using tape and a bobby pin. An alternative method to achieve the same end (and with a higher quality lens) is to dismantle a CD/DVD drive to source the lens and use painter’s tape to hold the lens in place–this is the technique I used several years ago, check out the tutorial video here. • 3rd Annual South Florida SQL Saturday - August 13th!

  The 3rd annual South Florida SQL Saturday event will be help August 13th, 2011 at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL. This is a change in venue from last year as DeVry is in the middle of a major remodling project. We has almost 450 last year, and we expect to have over 500 this year with great speakers such as Andy Warren, Herve Roggero, and more! As always, we our goal is to feed you well, so we are shooting for some hot lunch food this year. We are working on that now and will update you as soon as we firm it up. One of the things we will be trying this year is 90-100 minute sessions on a couple of tracks. We strongly feel that several topics are just getting warmed up in 45 minutes, so we are going to experiment with 90-100 minute sessions on some of the BI topics. We would love to see you there!

  I use Projectile for my weapon system and UDKProjectile has two main function to handle Hit of projectiles(=bullet of my weapon): simulated function ProcessTouch(Actor Other, Vector HitLocation, Vector HitNormal) // For Actors simulated event HitWall(vector HitNormal, actor Wall, PrimitiveComponent WallComp) // Everything except Actors ( I guess) the first method, the function just give me the actor which I hit and my question is How I can get that actor's physical material by first parameter ( Other ), in order to make a proper react about it ( for example a proper Sound of collide ) ... A tricky (but hateful ) way which I knew works is, make a Trace from a little back of that actor to that actor, and use HitInfo parameter which include physical Material ! But there should be a more standard way !

It's going to take all week for me to catch up on last week's neglected email, sort through the freshly-collected business cards, and generally make sense of the mad dash that is Oracle OpenWorld. So I've been playing this amazing video (produced by Lozano Productions) to remind me of the last business/IT conference marathon I survived: Collaborate 2012. It was an amazing event where we officially launched the new design of Profit and enjoyed a drink with some of our closest friends--Oracle partners, customers, and peers. Many thanks to those who came out to celebrate and who continue to help make Profit a success. It was a great time that resulted in a lot of great new work and new relationships. • WCF Firestarter Online Saturday 6/19/2010

  This weekend is the WCF Firestarter in New York City.  Registration to attend in person is SOLD OUT and were looking forward to a full house in the Big Apple on Saturday!  You can see the event agenda at Peter Laudatis blog, as well as at MSDN Events.  Firestarter events have been quite popular wherever Microsoft has hosted them around the country. • Prediction happening on (sending) client side

  This seems like a simple enough concept, but I haven't seen this implemented anywhere yet. Assuming that the server just forwards and verifies data... I'm using mouse-based movement, so it's not too difficult to predict the location of the player 150ms from when the event is sent. I'm thinking it is more accurate than using old data and older data on the receiving clients' side. The question I have, is why can I not find any examples of this? Is there something fundamentally wrong with this that I cannot find anyone implementing or talking about implementing this.
