• I keep Getting KeyError: 'tried' Whenever I Tried to Run Django Dev Server from Remote Machine

• A new CAPTCHA using sentences?

  I was just thinking about how recaptcha is getting harder when I thought about another posible solution. Images won't last forever so we will need something else some day - like human logic or emotion. Google and others are trying grouping images by category (find the image that doesn't belong) but that requires a large amount of images and doesn't work for the blind. Anyway, what if a massive collection of text was gathered (public-domain books from each language) and a sentence was shown to the user with 1 (or 2) words that were a select box of choices? Only computers that knew correct English/Spanish/German grammar would be able to tell which of the words belonged in the sentence. Would there be any problems with this approach? I would assume that it would be easy enough for anyone that knew the language that the sentense was displayed in to figure out the answer easier than trying to read the reCAPTCHA text. Plus, storing an insane number of sentences would only take a couple gigabytes of space and wouldn't take anywhere near the CPU time creating images/audio takes. In other words, anyone could host their own captcha system with minimal impact on system performance. Is there a problem with this approach? • What is a generic term for name/identifier? (as opposed to label)

  I need to refer to a number of things that have both an identifier value (used in code and configuration), and a human-readable label. These things include: database columns dropdown items subapplications objects stored in a dictionary I want two unambiguous terms. One to refer to the identifier/value/key. One to refer to the label. As you can see, I'm pretty settled on the latter :) For the former, identifier seems best (not everything is strictly a key, and value and name could refer to the label; although, identifier usually refers only to a variable name), but I would prefer to follow an established practice if there is one. Is there an established term for this? (Please provide a source.) If not, are there any examples of a choice from a significant source (Java APIs, MSDN, a big FLOSS project)? (I wasn't sure if this should be posted here or to English Language & Usage. I thought this was the more appropriate expert audience. Happy to migrate if not.)

• DB API for shell scripting (any shell)

  I am faced with some legacy shell scripts that run batch data processing jobs in Oracle using SQL+. For the most part, the data tier does not have to communicate back to the script with retrieved data to be passed for shell-level processing but in a few cases it does. The problem is, SQL+ is really meant to be an end user app and not an API that can communicate with other clients programmaticaly. That is why people have invented APIs such as DBD::DBI for Perl, JDBC for Java, ODBC etc. The way it is done is they invoke SQL+ and then parse the output, which is clearly designed for human eye consumption, using tools like sed and awk. The whole thing is at best a hack and very prone to bugs. Since this client is rather conservative with their technology, they don't want to scale their scripts up to Perl or Python where there are data access APIs. So I am wondering whether there are similar APIs for shell, e.g. K or bash. What I would like is if an API would return data in a 2-dimensional array or strings (for the lack of type setting) so that I can just read DB data like that. The way they do it now is akin to parsing regular web page HTML to get a single stock quote rather than cleanly calling a web service and be done with it. Anybody know of a product I can use? Thanks

• Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web ICT: second draft published from WCAG2ICT Task Force - for public review

  Last Thursday the W3C published an updated Working Draft of Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies. As I noted last July when the first draft was published, the motivation for this guidance comes from the Section 508 refresh draft, and also the European Mandate 376 draft, both of which seek to apply the WCAG 2.0 level A and AA Success Criteria to non-web ICT documents and software. This second Working Draft represents a major step forward in harmonization with the December 5th, 2012 Mandate 376 draft documents, including specifically Draft EN 301549 "European accessibility requirements for public procurement of ICT products and services". This work greatly increases the likelihood of harmonization between the European and American technical standards for accessibility, for web sites and web applications, non-web documents, and non-web software. As I noted last October at the European Policy Centre event: "The Accessibility Act – Ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and again last month at the follow-up EPC event: "Accessibility - From European challenge to global opportunity", "There isn't a 'German Macular Degernation', a 'French Cerebral Palsy', an 'American Autism Spectrum Disorder'. Disabilities are part of the human condition. They’re not unique to any one country or geography – just like ICT. Even the built environment – phones, trains and cars – is the same worldwide. The definition of ‘accessible’ should be global – and the solutions should be too. Harmonization should be global, and not just EU-wide. It doesn’t make sense for the EU to have a different definition to the US or Japan." With these latest drafts from the W3C and Mandate 376 team, we've moved a major step forward toward that goal of a global "definition of 'accessible' ICT." I strongly encourage all interested parties to read the Call for Review, and to submit comments during the current review period, which runs through 15 February 2013. Comments should be sent to public-wcag2ict-comments-AT-w3.org. • How to remotely control a Windows Service with ServiceController?

  Hi, I'm trying to control Windows Services that are installed in a remote computer. I'm using the ServiceController class. I have this: ServiceController svc = new ServiceController("MyWindowsService", "COMPUTER_NAME"); With this, I can get the status of the Windows Service like this: string status = svc.Status.ToString(); But I can't control the Windows Service (by doing svc.Start(); or svc.Stop();). I get the following exception: Cannot open Servicexxx service on computer 'COMPUTER_NAME' That's normal, I suppose there is something to do with access permissions. But how? I've looked into Google but didn't find what I was looking for. However I often read something related to impersonation, but I don't know what that means. NB: The local and remote computers are both running Win XP Pro. Thanks.

• Is there any evidence that drugs can actually help programmers produce "better" code? [closed]

  I just read this quote from Steve Jobs: "Doing LSD was one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life." Also a quote from that article: He was hardly alone among computer scientists in his appreciation of hallucinogenics and their capacity to liberate human thought from the prison of the mind. Now I'm wondering if there's any evidence to support the theory that drugs can help make a "better" programmer. Has there ever been a study where programmers have been given drugs to see if they could produce "better" code? Is there a well-known programming concept or piece of code which originated from people who were on drugs? EDIT So I did a little more research and it turns out Dennis R. Wier actually documented how he took LSD to wrap his head around a coding project: "At one point in the project I could not get an overall viewpoint for the operation of the entire system. It really was too much for my brain to keep all the subtle aspects and processing nuances clear so I could get a processing and design overview. After struggling with this problem for a few weeks, I decided to use a little acid to see if it would enable a breakthrough, because otherwise, I would not be able to complete the project and be certain of a consistent overall design"[1] There is also an interesting article on wired about Kevin Herbet, who used LSD to solve tough technical problems and chemist Kary Mullis even said "...that LSD had helped him develop the polymerase chain reaction that helps amplify specific DNA sequences." • Run Windows XP on a usb drive virtually on Windows XP?

  I am sick of not being able to run and install certain applications on my work computer due to admin restrictions (eg: Adobe AIR) . I have heard of smaller versions of Windows running on a usb thumb drive and have looked into it but can't find anything on running windows virtually from a usb drive. I would like to be able to login to this particular computer, insert my usb drive and then open up another version of windows installed on the thumb drive while still being able to use the windows I logged in on (literally be able to alt+tab between the main desktop and the virtual desktop from the usb drive). Is this even possible? For further clarification: The version of windows has to be Windows XP and there is no other option available for what I want to do. Looking forward to a response.

• Trouble Extending Network with Apple Airport Extreme (PC won't connect with Ethernet)

  So I have an Apple Airport Extreme base station that I use to create a wifi network at my house. But on a separate story from this station i have a PC (running Windows 7) that does not have a wireless card. Luckily, I have another Airport Extreme Base Station, so I figured I'd have my second station "extend" the existing network. I asked Apple if this was possible, which it was, and walked through the setup wizard to extend the network. Then I ran an ethernet cable from the Station to my PC. However the PC refuses to connect to the Internet. It says it can access the network, "Unidentified Network (Limited Connectivity)", but that's it. It tells me that my computer does not have an IP address. I tried running the cable to another computer (my Apple MacBook Pro) and got a similar error. Any thoughts?

• Syntax logic suggestions

  This syntax will be used inside HTML attributes. Here are a few examples of what I have so far: <input name="a" conditions="!b, c" /> <input name="b" /> <input name="c" /> This will make input "a" do something if b is not checked and c is checked (b and c are assumed to be checkboxes if they don't have a :value defined) <input name="a" conditions="!b:foo|bar, c:foo" /> <input name="b" /> <input name="c" /> This will make input "a" do something if bdoesn't have foo or bar values, and if c has the foo value. <input name="a" conditions="!b:EMPTY" /> <input name="b" /> Makes input "a" do something if b has a value assigned. So, essentially , acts as logical AND, : as equals (=), ! as NOT, and | as OR. The | (OR) is only needed between values (at least I think so), and AND is not needed between values for obvious reasons :) EMPTY means empty value, like <input value="" /> Do you have any suggestions on improving this syntax, like making it more human friendly? For example I think the "EMPTY" keyword is not really appropriate and should be replaced with a character, but I don't know which one to choose.

• PHP rand function (or not so rand)

  I was testing PHP rand function to write on a image. Of course the output shows that it's not so random. The code I used: <?php header('Content-Type: image/png'); $lenght = 512; $im = imagecreatetruecolor($lenght, $lenght); $blue = imagecolorallocate($im, 0, 255, 255); for ($y = 0; $y < $lenght; $y++) { for ($x = 0; $x < $lenght; $x++) { if (rand(0,1) == 0) { imagesetpixel($im, $x, $y, $blue); } } } imagepng($im); imagedestroy($im); ?> My question is, if I use image width/lenght (variable $lenght in this example) number like 512, 256 or 1024, it is very clear that it's not so random. When I change the variable to 513 for an example, it is so much harder for human eye to detect it. Why is that? • Language parsing to find important words

  I'm looking for some input and theory on how to approach a lexical topic. Let's say I have a collection of strings, which may just be one sentence or potentially multiple sentences. I'd like to parse these strings to and rip out the most important words, perhaps with a score that denotes how likely the word is to be important. Let's look at a few examples of what I mean. Example #1: "I really want a Keurig, but I can't afford one!" This is a very basic example, just one sentence. As a human, I can easily see that "Keurig" is the most important word here. Also, "afford" is relatively important, though it's clearly not the primary point of the sentence. The word "I" appears twice, but it is not important at all since it doesn't really tell us any information. I might expect to see a hash of word/scores something like this: "Keurig" => 0.9 "afford" => 0.4 "want" => 0.2 "really" => 0.1 etc... Example #2: "Just had one of the best swimming practices of my life. Hopefully I can maintain my times come the competition. If only I had remembered to take of my non-waterproof watch." This example has multiple sentences, so there will be more important words throughout. Without repeating the point exercise from example #1, I would probably expect to see two or three really important words come out of this: "swimming" (or "swimming practice"), "competition", & "watch" (or "waterproof watch" or "non-waterproof watch" depending on how the hyphen is handled). Given a couple examples like this, how would you go about doing something similar? Are there any existing (open source) libraries or algorithms in programming that already do this?

• .Net installation issue with SqlServerPipelineHost and SqlServer.DtsMsg

  I added a web service consumer to a vb 2005 Windows app and tried to install it on another computer, which had an earlier version already installed (ClickOnce deployment). An error came up saying I needed to install Microsoft.SqlServer.PipelineHist in the GAC. I added PipelineHost to the list of references and marked it Copy Local = true, rebuilt the solution, published it and tried to install it on that other computer. This time it said I needed to install Microsoft.SqlServer.DtsMsg, however, that component does not show up on my list of .Net components. Where do I go from here? Thank you.

• Calculating co-ordinate of a point on a path given a distance

  I'm working on a project that surveys the condition of a road or highway using a calibrated trip computer connected to a rugged-PC. An operator keys in defect codes as they travel along a pre-defined route. I need to show an indicator on the map screen that shows the vehicles current position, taking into account the distance data from the trip computer. I know the exact lat lon co-ordinates at the starting point of each section of road, and the road is made up of a series of points. The question is: how can I calculate the lat lon co-ordinates of the vehicle assuming that it has continued on the route and traveled a certain distance (e.g. 1.4km). The co-ordinates would be 'locked onto' the road line, as shown in blue on the diagram below. Thanks, Alex

  I got cheap Ebay wifi dongle from HongKong, Im trying to set it up on my ubuntu server. Occasionally need to move server, so it cannot always be connected to router via lan. Anyhow, usb wifi came with a driver cd. • Is the development of CLI apps considered "backward"?

  I am a DBA fledgling with a lot of experience in programming. I have developed several CLI, non interactive apps that solve some daily repetitive tasks or eliminate the human error from more complex albeit not so daily tasks. These tools are now part of our tool box. I find CLI apps are great because you can include them in an automated workflow. Also the Unix philosophy of doing a single thing but doing it well, and letting the output of a process be the input of another, is a great way of building a set of tools than would consolidate into an strategic advantage. My boss recently commented that developing CLI tools is "backward", or constitutes a "regression". I told him I disagreed, because most CLI tools that exist now are not legacy but are live projects with improved versions being released all the time. Is this kind of development considered "backwards" in the market? Does it look bad on a rèsumè? I also considered all solutions whether they are web or desktop, should have command line, non-interactive options. Some people consider this a waste of programming resources. Is this goal a worthy one in a software project?
